Ray, E.Z., Mark, and Oscar dive into the importance of doctrine in the Christian life, challenging the idea that doctrine is cold or unnecessary. They emphasize that doctrine isn't exclusive to Christianity—everyone has a belief system, even atheists. As soon as you begin to answer questions about who Jesus is, you're entering doctrinal territory. Christians are called to meditate on the Word of God because without sound doctrine, it's easy to believe a lie. The guys talk about how many believers avoid doctrine due to a misunderstanding of the gospel. When you understand the gospel as adoption into God's family, gratitude drives you to know your Savior more. There's no divide between deep love for God and sound theology. Doctrine is rooted in theology, which is the knowledge of God—and you can't love someone you don't know. Each truth learned about God is another reason to love Him. Mark reminds us that good doctrine leads to doxology—right worship. The way you live spiritually and physically will catch up with you, and without sound doctrine, decisions lack a foundation. Discernment is knowing the difference between right and almost right, which can be the difference between truth and deception. As Ray mentions, a sign of the end times is people turning from sound doctrine to what suits their desires, following prosperity preachers who don't teach the true gospel.Church history also reminds us of the weight of doctrine—people have died for it. While unity is important, the truth should never be sacrificed. Unsound doctrine often stems from a lack of seriousness about sin. The guys discuss how peace should be pursued where possible, but not at the expense of truth. Essential doctrines—like the authority of Scripture, the nature of God, the Trinity, the person and work of Jesus, salvation, the Holy Spirit, the church, and Christ's return—are non-negotiable. Secondary issues, though important, are not hills to die on.The group also warns against extremes—those who read only the Bible and reject all theological resources, and those who rely solely on commentaries without reading Scripture. Doctrine should be both understood and lived out. Truths like the doctrine of creation remind us we are made in God's image, and eschatology offers comfort in a chaotic world. When confronting false doctrine, we must do so with humility, remembering Philippians 2 and esteeming others higher than ourselves. Doctrine isn't just information—it's transformation, guiding how we live, worship, and walk with Christ daily.Send us a textThanks for listening! Mesmerising dance floor tapestries from a singular experimental musician. Can you reinvent the human voice? The oldest musical instrument in existence, our voices are the foundation of music as we know it, and few push its limits in electronic music today like Lyra Pramuk. On her masterful debut, Fountain the Berlin-based, US-born artist's voice was the only instrument. No drums, no synths—just her voice warped, synthesized and layered to achieve orchestral-like electronics. Five years on from her breakout, Pramuk's practice has steadily evolved, with a continued interest in ideas of folk and futurism, and how technology can enable us to build community beyond boundaries of time and space. There's a holistic nature to her artistry, one that extends seamlessly into her DJing (she's also a quantum physicist by training). As she explains in the Q&A accompanying this week's RA Podcast, she sees her work as "part of a continuum of sacred, folkloric, and communal music represented by many different subcultures and communities across the world." It's an approach that, like much of Pramuk's output, feels explicitly choral in nature. The first voice we hear on the mix comes from Lonnie Holley, his woozy Southern drawl calling out, "Earth will be there to catch us when we fall." (Although, you have to wonder, if we keep flogging the Earth, will it?) More voices follow across an eye-catching tracklist, from the poetry of friends (Nadia Marcus) to esoteric French chantresses from the '80s (Anne Gillis), while Pramuk wraps an extensive amount of her own forthcoming material around tracks from SD Laika, Leyland Kirby, rRoxymore and 33EMYBW, to name just a few. By the end, voice and noise become indistinguishable—stammering, glitchy vocals colliding with an orchestra of instruments. The effect is mesmerising. Unfolding as one continuous composition, RA.979 exists somewhere between an ambient set at Kwia and the main stage at Unsound, voices and textures blurred into a fluid tapestry of sound. It's a singular offering to the series from a singular artist. @lyra_songs Read the interview and find the tracklist at ra.co/podcast/980

The second part of a special double feature, returning us to Krakow's Unsound festival, where we began with Episode 1. The inaugural episode featured Resina and Lea Bertucci, from Poland and New York, respectively, and so for the sake of symmetry, this episode pairs Antonina Nowacka and Dreamcrusher, two artists who make affective, vocal-based music, but to very different affects. That is to say, this is an episode that leans into contrasts: the US and Europe, home and away, morning and night, quiet and noise. We discuss non-dance DJ sets, the relationship between music and fashion, the joys and difficulties of traveling as an artist, and the adventurous programming of Unsound. Negativland has always been about media literacy; their pranks are not only humorous but reveal something about how media function. But in recent years, as the world has changed around them, their relationship to this aspect of their practice has had to evolve. What was subversive in the 80s is mostly met with a shrug today. While sampling has become less essential to their work, the group continues to reappropriate and recontextualize human speech, and in an age of AI voice clones, the importance of using actual voices becomes even more significant. Last fall, I sat down with Negativland's Mark Hosler and Jon Leidecker (Wobbly) at Krakow, Poland's Unsound festival to discuss the history of their long running group, the importance of radio, and how the changing mediascape has transformed the meaning of their work as collage has gone mainstream. The long-awaited essay collection from one of the most influential voices in disability activism that detonates a bomb in our collective understanding of care and illness, showing us that sickness is a fact of life. In the wake of the 2014 Ferguson riots, and sick with a chronic condition that rendered them housebound, Johanna Hedva turned to the page to ask: How do you throw a brick through the window of a bank if you can't get out of bed? It was not long before this essay, "Sick Woman Theory", became a seminal work on disability, because in reframing illness as not just a biological experience but a social one, Hedva argues that under capitalism--a system that limits our worth to the productivity of our bodies--we must reach for the revolutionary act of caring for ourselves and others. How to Tell When We Will Die: On Pain, Disability, and Doom (Zando-Hillman Grad Books, 2024) expands upon Hedva's paradigm-shifting perspective in a series of slyly subversive and razor-sharp essays that range from the theoretical to the personal--from Deborah Levy and Susan Sontag to wrestling, kink, mysticism, death, and the color yellow. Drawing from their experiences with America's byzantine healthcare system, and considering archetypes they call The Psychotic Woman, The Freak, and The Hag in Charge, Hedva offers a bracing indictment of the politics that exploit sickness--relying on and fueling ableism--to the detriment of us all. With the insight of Anne Boyer's The Undying and Leslie Jamison's The Empathy Exams, and the wit of Samantha Irby, Hedva's debut collection upends our collective understanding of disability. In their radical reimagining of a world where care and pain are symbiotic, and our bodies are allowed to live free and well, Hedva implores us to remember that illness is neither an inconvenience or inevitability, but an enlivening and elemental part of being alive. Johanna Hedva (they/them) is a Korean American writer, artist, and musician from Los Angeles. Hedva is the author of the essay collection How To Tell When We Will Die: On Pain, Disability, and Doom, published September 2024, by Hillman Grad Books. Two great detective shows from The Adventures of Philip Marlowe starring Gerald Mohr
The UK has made progress in addressing societal inequalities, but continues to be shaped by interlinked structural disparities. That includes those related to gender, race, class, sexuality, age and disability. Five years ago, the Resolution Foundation and UCL collaborated on a commission exploring the interactions between these inequalities. Since then, the UK has gone through significant challenges, including a pandemic and a cost-of-living crisis, so how have UK inequalities evolved? How have disadvantaged groups been affected by recent economic shocks, and what structural barriers persist? How do the issues of health and disability – which have risen up the political and public policy agenda – interact with other inequalities? And how do structural inequalities fit into the new Government's agenda, and what key policy challenges must they address? The Resolution Foundation, in partnership with UCL, hosted a webinar to explore these important questions. After presenting the key findings from the Structurally Unsound report and new research on the changed landscape of structural inequalities in the UK, leading experts discuss how to tackle persistent societal inequalities. Speakers: Alesha De Freitas, Head of Policy, Advocacy and Research at the Fawcett society Imran Rasul, Professor of Economics at UCL Olivia Stevenson, Deputy Director of Public Policy at UCL Nye Cominetti, Research Director at the Resolution Foundation (Chair)

"Soundscapes reveal a lot about how people think and behave." The field recordist and musician talks about listening culture, repatriating African sounds and his new album with The Bug. Today's conversation moves away from the dance floor, focusing instead on the soft, ambient soundscapes of the Berlin-based musician Joseph Kamaru—AKA KMRU—whose work has been featured at festivals like CTM, Mutek, Atonal, Horst Music and Arts, Dekmantel, and Unsound; concert halls like The Barbican; and major galleries and site-specific installations around the world. Kamaru moved to Europe from Nairobi, where he first became interested in music production, and field recordings specifically. As a graduate student in the sonic arts, he learned that the majority of the discourse around sound art practices is specific to Western Eurocentric or occidental ways of thinking. He's since embarked on a mission to use field recording as a means of repatriating African identities that are often left out of institutional archives and grapple with the legacy of colonialism. In this RA Exchange, Kamaru reflects on the sociopolitical angle of his work, and his observation that listening, by its very nature, is never neutral. He also talks about how civilisation and technology has changed our collective listening habits; how sound sources beyond the human hearing range make their way into his work with the use of electromagnetic microphones; and his new album, Disconnect, made with the musician Kevin Richard Martin (AKA The Bug). Listen to the episode in full.

Gromadzi entuzjastów szeroko pojmowanej muzyki elektronicznej i eksperymentalnej.

Susie grew up within the church, dedicating herself fully—marrying, raising six children, and building a career as a nurse, all while living as a devoted Mormon. But in 2012, her life took a dramatic turn when she began to question the very foundations of her faith. This questioning led to her excommunication, an event that would unleash a torrent of chaos and turmoil. Safe Unsound | Documentary What is Safe Unsound about? Three Ukrainian families find a foothold in a remote corner of Ireland. How temporary is their life there? No one knows. ---------- LINKS: https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/d-j-b/safe-unsound-documentary ---------- THE TEAM: Daniel James Baldwin - Director and Producer Hannah Tookey - Producer Steve Lacey - Executive Producer Daria Korsak - Editor and Translator Jackie Teboul - Director of Photography ---------- In Spring 2022, the plight of Ukraine and its people was at the forefront of our minds and we opened our arms to them. Today, 6 million displaced Ukrainians face a souring of that mood, and Moscow is poised to take advantage the moment our emotional fatigue kicks in. Safe Unsound is a story about the human cost of war told from the perspective of three Ukrainian families containing three generations. In County Mayo, in Ireland, where they moved after the invasion of their country, they are far from the frontline, and very far from home. Victor and his wife Ludmilla imagined spending their retirement eating apples in their orchard, not learning English in an abandoned schoolhouse in Castlebar. Kate planned to learn to dance, not leave her law career and husband in Kyiv to work day and night to rebuild a life for her young children in the countryside. Maryna hoped to support her four kids and help them thrive, not keep the peace at home while her eldest daughter, Arina, works to make ends meet. This film explores these families' efforts to contribute to, and fit into, Irish society as well as their tireless quest for control, momentum, and independence. ---------- SUPPORT THE CHANNEL: https://www.buymeacoffee.com/siliconcurtain https://www.patreon.com/siliconcurtain ---------- TRUSTED CHARITIES ON THE GROUND: Save Ukraine https://www.saveukraineua.org/ Superhumans - Hospital for war traumas https://superhumans.com/en/ UNBROKEN - Treatment. Relaxer is the project of Daniel Martin-McCormick, fka Ital, member of Black Eyes & Gaze, ex-Mi Ami, Halal & Relaxer, Sleeper Cell, Interplanetary Prophets, and more. Rooted in the US punk/noise underground of the late '90s and early 2000s, Martin-McCormick's music embodies a sensual, visceral edge that reflects and extends that legacy. His hardware live sets, honed over a decade of tours, are exhilarating, white knuckle rides, while his DJ sets fluidly cross genres and eras with a cathartic sense of play. He's been a repeat performer at Berghain (where the Relaxer project made its live debut), De School, Unsound, Nowadays and many others. On albums "Concealer" (Planet Mu), "Coconut Grove" (Avenue 66) and "Hedonic Fatigue" (Climate of Fear), his productions stretch out, weaving strands of wormhole techno, minimal, noise, UK hardcore continuum and fractured ambient into a rippling, mesmeric tapestry. Recent club-focused EPs "Licking" and "Candy" (Lovers Rock Recordings) sharpen the blade, amping up his music's animialstic snarl and erotic undertones. Following his recent composition studies with Morton Subotnick, Relaxer's music has evolved a new modality: alongside his club works there have been concerts of long form durational works featuring spoken word and richly spatialized sound design. His debut performance in this new style was a standout at Sustain-Release Year Seven. These works were released in the Summer of 2022 as "Force Field: A Guide for the Perplexed" on Club Night Club. "In Softening Air," the follow up, is out on Lovers Rock Recordings April 1st. Behind the scenes, Martin-McCormick has been a consistent force shaping the US underground. He is the co-founder of Dripping camping festival and NY-based event series. He was a key member of Sustain-Release from its inception and co-director from 2017-2021, founded the labels Lovers Rock Recordings & Climate of Fear, was one of the first residents at Bossa Nova Civic Club. Mental health problems are on the rise. What does the Bible say about our mental health? And how do we tap into the hope that God has promised us in an unsound world?
Jennifer Walshe is one of the coolest people we know. Her artistic work and thought has broken our brains for years, leaving us shipwrecked in its torrential waves of reference and irony and joy and conceptual viscera. We talk about her recent piece for the Unsound Dispatch, 13 Ways of Looking at AI, Art & Music — a series of vignettes that in their totality assemble into one of the most coherent accountings of what it is we're all experiencing. Some references from the ep:Listen to Things Know Things on RTÉ Lyric FM. Hopefully you're aware of the music duo Matmos — Jennifer references this record in the context of discussing conceptual work. Jennifer also speaks often of her close collaborator Jon Leidecker (Wobbly), who has a few absolutely killer sets with Matmos, including this one.You can interact with Walshe's Text Score Dataset here.We continue to enjoy references to Holly Herndon and Mat Dryhurst's Have I Been Trained (https://haveibeentrained.com/), a way to search for your (or anyone's) work in large, public, AI training datasets. Two movies everyone should see: Catfish the Movie and HER. (We'd also recommend Catfish the TV show, of course).Jennifer mentions the computer scientist Kate Devlin's work, especially “Turned On: Science, Sex and Robots.”If you haven't googled a picture of Paro the Therapy Seal, do it.Jennifer's record “A Late Anthology of Early Music Vol. 1: Ancient to Renaissance” is a top lifetime record as far as we both are concerned. Check out track 16 for that Palestrina. It's CRAZY. To wrap it up, check out Ted Gioia's Substack and Bruce Sterling's writing (the concept Walshe references is "Dark Euphoria").

On our latest weekly roundup, we start with a cautionary tale about baking your own bread: It could lead to an ER visit. What we're watching: On season 2 of Reservation Dogs, episodes 7 ("Stay Gold Cheesy Boy") and 8 ("This Is Where the Plot Thickens") could not have been more different. One focused on Cheese and his big heart, and the other on Big and an unintentional acid trip that led to some real-life trippiness. We'd watch #7 again and again, and are delighted that it's in the Extra Hot Great Canon. But once was enough for #8.Catherine's library find this week is The Strange Case of Dr. Couney: How a Mysterious European Showman Saved Thousands of American Babies by Dawn Raffel. It caught her eye because the author was one of Catherine's bosses at her first job after college. Plus, it does sound like a fascinating tale. Mentioned: Empire of the Sum and Pockets: An Intimate History of How We Keep Things Close. In the archives, we revisit episodes in which we discussed a clickbait complaint (March 15, 2023); unsound sleep (March 14, 2019); and memorable birthdays (March 15, 2018). Next week, we'll watch the final two episodes of Reservation Dogs, season 2: E9 “Offerings" and E10 “I Still Believe.” Until then (and anytime you're in need), the archives are available.

It would be no exaggeration to say that 33EMYBW is one of the most original club music producers we've heard in recent years. In addition to being a talented visual artist and a bass player in the experimental band Duck Fight Goose, her solo productions are a highlight of Shanghai's bustling underground scene—home to forward-thinking artists like Tzusing, Osheyack, Swimful and Hyph11e—moving with their own rhythmic language. She has a lexicon of drum sounds borrowed from all over the world, including tablas, bongos and mallets. As 33EMYBW, she puts together strange, multi-limbed rhythms that bring to mind images of dancing spiders and insects, something she addressed directly on 2019's showstopping Arthropods LP, released on the influential SVBKVLT label. As she says in the interview below, you basically need more than two legs to dance to her music. Maybe even eight. Her music deals with creatures that vary from the mythical to the everyday (her first album was called Golem). On her latest record Holes Of Sinian, also out on SVBKVLT, she imagines the mostly-unknown organisms from the recently discovered Ediacaran period. It's more esoteric, atmospheric and arguably even funkier than her previous work, with Marina Herlop on one hair-raising track that you can hear in a demo version on her RA Podcast. This mix is actually a version of her live set—a favourite at influential festivals like Unsound and CTM—featuring plenty of productions from across her career in mutated and improvisational forms. It's creepy, crawly and undeniably danceable. If you can keep up with it. @33emybw Read more at https://ra.co/podcast/912
At Kraków's Unsound festival, the London-based ambassador of footwork and jungle opens up about recent musings about legacy and the art of letting go. Since her first Boiler Room set went viral (so viral, she claims, it broke her phone), SHERELLE's career has ascended with a rapidness that even she struggles to fully comprehend. Almost instantly, she went from working a day job at Mixmag to DJing major festivals around the world, where she spread the word of 160 BPM music. Today, the London artist has an NTS residency with long-time friend and partner Naina, has two EPs under her belt and is at the helm of two labels–Hoover Sound and Beautiful. This year, she planned to take her reputation as a producer to the next level with a debut album that was scheduled for release in 2023. But this summer, every musician's worst nightmare happened to SHERELLE . After a mugging in Europe, she lost every bit of her music—her DJ repertoire, her unreleased tracks and perhaps most devastatingly, her entire debut album. Discussing this at Kraków's Unsound festival, however, SHERELLE is chipper and refreshingly wise. In this intimate and hilarious conversation with RA's in-house critic, Kiana Mickles, she describes the incident as a launchpad for recent musings about the art of letting go, the importance of archiving and how she's approaching her debut album differently the second time around.

After splitting from Depeche Mode in 1995, Alan Wilder focused his full attention on Recoil, his side-project going back to the mid-1980s. In 1997, the same year DM released "Ultra," Wilder released the fourth Recoil studio album, "Unsound Methods." Free to explore the electronic soundscape, Wilder enlisted several vocalists to tackle the electronic/trip-hop material, including Douglas McCarthy from Nitzer Ebb and NYC spoken word artist Maggie Estep. The result is both of the time and ahead of its time, fitting in nicely with the mid-90s trip-hop sounds of Massive Attack, Sneaker Pimps, and Portishead, while also foreshadowing the more experimental and cinematic sounds of James Lavelle's Unkle. Given his experiences, and the dangers he, his wife and children face, is it time for them, and perhaps many of us, to leave the USA for a safer environment. Today on the show we have director, producer, screenwriter, actor and YouTube sensation Darious Britt I had the pleasure of meeting Darious at the Mammoth Film Festival. At the festival, we were snowed in and pretty much stuck in our hotel. We sat down and talked for hours about indie film, his journey, my journey, the state of indie film, fear, setting goals and so much more.I knew I had to have him on the show to talk shop. What you are about to listen to is a DEEP DIVE into the psychology of a standard indie filmmaker. We break down the brutal and raw truth of what it takes to make it in today's world. We also discuss how to build and engage with an audience. His amazing channel D4Darious is a MUST for any and all filmmakers. I've been a fan of his work for years. I love his approach and teaching style. Here's a bit about the man.He attended film school at the University of Arizona and graduated in May of 2012 with a bachelors in Media production. He toured his short film “Seafood Tester” to four international film festivals including the Oscar-qualifying Aspen Shorts fest in 2012.Darious created the youtube channel D4Darious, in August of 2013 and it has since grown to over 340,000 subscribers and over 10 million views in five years. He has toured his first feature film “Unsound” on the film festival circuit screening at over 20 international film festivals, winning 7 awards including best director at The Pan African Film Festival in 2015. He loves telling stories and helping other filmmakers learn the craft to reach their highest potential as storytellers. Now I warn you, this episode runs nearly two hours but I promise you it will be worth it. I lost count of how many knowledge bombs went off in this episode.Prepare to get your mind BLOWN and enjoy my conversation with Darious Britt.
With the money printing machines running 24/7/365 at the Federal Reserve, the Ponzi scheme which is America's monetary policy is reaching the end of its life cycle. There are too many units of currency in the system and the value of each unit is rapidly being depreciated at breakneck speed. By all accounts, the system is ready to collapse. Now that future economic uncertainty is on the minds of most people, those paying attention are looking for the exits and wondering what to do with their wealth before it gets hyperinflated away. Luckily, Tony Arterburn has been preparing for this very outcome for many years and is positioned to help people convert their Federal Reserve notes into silver and gold as a way of betting against the U.S. Dollar and possibly profiting when this whole system comes crashing down.
