This week is our last chat from BrauBeviale where we learn a lot about history and brewing traditions and a little bit about malt with Dr Axel Gohler from German maltster Bestmalz. So much has happened in the craft brewing industry in a short time in Australia with new breweries, beer styles and business models, that sometimes it can be easy to forget that these things have come and gone before, especially in a country with such strong brewing traditions as Germany. Dr Gohler talks about his family's 7 generation history in the brewing industry, firstly in brewing in Berlin and then in malting. We also hear of the development of Bestmalz from a period post Wold War 2 when roasted barley was used to make coffee but that the German commitment to beer culture saw malting recover and the recent growth of craft beer worldwide has seen it flourish. Radio Brews News is proudly presented by Cryer Malt. With over 25 years in the field, Cryer Malt has been bringing you the world's best local and imported malts. Your premium brewing partner and proud supporters of Brews News. This week we chat hops with the team at Yakima Chief Hops. We're joined by Ryan Hopkins - Chief Sales Officer, Patrick Smith - Vice President Loftus Ranches and Joe Catron - Operations Manager, Yakima Chief Ranches. A few weeks ago Matt was in Nuremberg to check out BrauBeviale. While there he was struck with the presence that US hop growers had. Hop forward US style beers hardly have a presence in the very traditional German market. Was this presence an investment in the future of hops, trying to create a market for US hops and US styles in Germany, or a response to an already growing market? Enjoy the conversation. Last week Matt was in Nuremberg to check out the mother of all brewing trade shows, BrauBeviale, and while there he ran into Bridge Road Brewers founder Ben Kraus who is currently a few months into a 12 month hiatus from the brewery which he and his family are spending in his partner's native Austria. We learn how Ben, who has very much been central to Bridge Road's brand, vision and personality, set the business up in a way that allowed him to step away from the business so completely. We discuss his reasons for taking a break from the business, and whether the break from the day-to-day hubbub of the beer word has given him a new perspective on the Australian industry. We also learn what beers he has been drinking in Austria. It's a fun chat with someone who has been an enduring guest on the podcast. Enjoy the conversation.
