Host: Logan Parker Producer: Glen Mittelhauser After being temporarily stranded across Moosehead Lake’s Northwest Cove, Logan sets out to Seboomook Island and the conclusion of his multi-trip effort to document Red-breasted Merganser breeding in Maine. This essay, written and read by Logan Parker, was originally published in The Observer, an online natural history journal published by Maine Natural History Observatory. More information about Maine Natural History can be found at mainenaturalhistory.org. About the hosts: Glen Mittelhauser founded Maine Natural History Observatory (MNHO) in 2003 to fill the need for an organization that specializes in collecting, interpreting, and maintaining datasets for understanding changes in Maine's plant and wildlife populations.  Glen received his Bachelor's in Human Ecology from College of the Atlantic in 1989 with a focus in the biological sciences and received his Master of Science degree in Zoology (with a focus on ornithology and statistics) from the University of Maine in 2000. Glen was the Managing Editor for Northeastern Naturalist and Southeastern Naturalist for 18 years and has served as external graduate faculty for 3 graduate student committees at the University of Maine.  Glen currently serves on the Baxter State Park Research Committee. Logan Parker is an Ecologist residing in Waldo County, Maine. Logan started the Maine Nightjar Monitoring Project in 2017 and brought the project (and his passion for bird conservation) to MNHO when he joined the team in 2018. Logan is heavily involved in the ongoing Maine Bird Atlas where he both coordinates and participates in the project's special species surveys. When “off the clock”, Logan enjoys birding, writing, gardening, and working alongside his wife, Hallee, on their off-grid home in the Maine woods. Logan is also a wildlife photographer and shares photos and field notes through his project, Here In The Wild. A male Buff-breasted Sandpiper courts a female on their breeding grounds far north of the Arctic Circle. He raises his wings, flashing their silvery-white undersides, as he sings his clicking serenade. These birds spend much of the year on grasslands in Argentina, migrating to the Arctic in late spring. In the lower 48, September is a good time to look for this long-distance traveler. During migration, they show a distinct preference for grassy expanses such as pastures and rice fields. Purchasing organic rice can help secure the future of a threatened species like the Buff-breasted Sandpiper.More info and transcript at BirdNote.org. Want more BirdNote? It's the final episode of Season Five already! We are talking about some of our favourite fantasy and sci-fi romances which feature the Time Travel trope! A full list of the books, both featured and mentioned, can be found below. There may be some plot point spoilers in our discussion of the books but as always with romance, we know there is going to be a HEA and our episodes aim to share the joy we take in following the characters on their journey towards it and prompt conversations exploring why SFF romance is so fantastic. These are adult romances, so warning for explicit language and please check content warnings for the book before listening if there are topics that you might find upsetting to hear about. Episode #97 - This week, Steven and Leo take aim at HARD TO DIE! They talk about fighting your attacker in a thong, using every prop you've got, very surprising cameos, how women shower in the wild, solving complex puzzles, how many bullets it takes to get to the center of a demons heart and answer the impossible question: Is this a sequel to Slumber Party Massacre of Sorority House Massacre? Leo's good microphone died, so he had to use his not as good backup mic. Sorry for the weird audio that caused, it'll be corrected on our next episode.
