Between the time the first Nobel Prize was awarded in 1901 and 1933, a total of 31 were awarded to German scientists and politicians. To name just a few, Wilhelm Röntgen (1901), Max Planck (1918), Albert Einstein (1921) and Werner Heisenberg (1932) for Physics, Emil Fischer (1902), Fritz Haber (1918), Walther Nernst (1920) and Hans Fischer (1930) for chemistry, Emil von Behring (1901), Robert Koch (1905) and Otto Warburg (1931) for medicine, Theodor Mommsen (1902), Gerhart Hauptmann (1912) and Thomas Mann (1929) for literature and Gustav Stresemann for peace. The UK and France received 17 and 15 respectively, whilst the US picked up just 6 during that same period. How could German universities rise to such dominance during the 19th and early 20th century from very humble beginnings? Der sitzt perfekt eingebettet in der Mall "Das Schloss" und lädt die Steglitzer:innen zum Besuch ein. Und ein Podcast lässt sich dort auch hervorragend aufnehmen. Wir haben uns also da mit Pflegedirektorin Barbara und der stellvertretenden pflegerischen Leitung der Kardiologie Frederike getroffen, um mit ihnen über ihr Kiezkrankenhaus zu sprechen. "Wir haben immer innovative Ideen gehabt, im Recruiting der Pflege. Jetzt wollten wir nochmal eins draufsetzen und zu den Bewerbern und in die Bevölkerung kommen", sagt Barbara. Und das Konzept geht auf, die Bewerbungen kommen. Aber ist der Umgang im Emil-von-Behring wirklich so "locker-flockig" wie der Store suggeriert, will Ollschgich wissen... "Das Alte, das Militärische, das Hochhierarchische, nee, das gibt's bei uns definitiv nicht!", betont Frederike. Als Kiezkrankenhaus habe man auch zu seinen Patient:innen eine enge, jahrelange Bindung. Ob den älteren Mitarbeitenden das nicht zu modern ist, wie das Haus mit Personalmangel generell umgeht und wie und ob Pflegende in Stresszeiten unterstützt werden, hört ihr - live aus der Mall - in der neuen zwischenschicht. Over in the US so far on Tuesday, Wall Street closed mixed as Fed Chair Jerome Powell signalled concerns over the direction of the US economy amid US tariffs and the possibility of a global trade war. The Dow Jones climbed 0.1% while the S&P500 and Nasdaq dropped 0.2% and 0.6% respectively.In Europe overnight, markets closed higher as investors digested the latest Trump tariff announcements and The European Union plans to retaliate against the US for new steel and aluminium tariffs. The STOXX 600 rose 0.23%, Germany's DAX added 0.56%, the French CAC gained 0.28% and, in the UK, the FTSE100 ended the day up 0.11%.Across the APAC region on Tuesday, markets closed mixed as investors continued digesting the impacts and flow on effects of Trump's latest tariffs. Hong Kong's Hang Seng fell 1.06%, and China's CSI index fell 0.46%, while South Korea's Kospi Index rose 0.71% and Japan's markets were closed for a holiday.The local market started the new trading week lower on Monday before a choppy session that led to a flat close on Tuesday as a sharp sell-off in healthcare stocks weighed on the local index.Trump tariffs continue to dampen investor sentiment and fuel investor and central bank demand for gold stocks, bullion and exposure in portfolios given the safe-haven nature of the precious commodity at a time where economic and market certainty is unclear.CSL's results for the first half out yesterday weighed on the local market and healthcare sector as the healthcare giant fell nearly 5% yesterday despite beating expectations for 2 of the company's 3 divisions. Investors likely sold out of the company amid warnings of FX headwinds to come in H2 and after the Seqirus division posted a 9% decline in revenue on the PCP.Gold miners rocketed again yesterday as the price of the precious commodity jumped over US$2900/ounce for the first time amid increased demand out of central banks and from investors due to the haven nature of the commodity in a time of great uncertainty.What to watch today:Ahead of the midweek trading session here in Australia the SPI futures are anticipating the ASX will open the day up 0.02%.The Aussie dollar has further strengthened against the greenback to buy US$0.62, 95.87 Japanese Yen, 50.70 British Pence and 1 NZ$1.11 cents.On the commodities front this morning, oil is trading 1.21% higher at US$73.19/barrel, gold is down 0.38% at US$2906/ounce and iron ore is up 0.56% at US$106.97/tonne.Trading Ideas:Bell Potter has maintained a buy rating on CSL (ASX:CSL) but have lowered the 12-month price target from $345 to $335 following the release of the company's first half results showing revenue rose 5% but fell 1% short of BPe and NPATA rose 3% but was 4% below BPe. The analyst maintains a buy rating as the Behring division continues its strong growth outlook and positive margin recovery despite the Seqirus division facing headwinds of declining vaccine demand in the US.And Trading Central has identified a bullish signal on QBE Insurance Group (ASX:QBE) following the formation of a pattern over a period of 7-days which is roughly the same amount of time the share price may rise from the close of $20.43 to the range of $21.90 to $22.20 according to standard principles of technical analysis.

Por Luiz Sérgio Castro   No dia 27 de julho de 1966, um evento de grande relevância marcou a história da Maçonaria no Brasil: a fundação da CMSB - Confederação da Maçonaria Simbólica do Brasil. Essa data ficou gravada como um marco importante na consolidação da Maçonaria brasileira e na busca por maior unidade e coordenação entre as Grandes Lojas do país. Para compreender a importância da CMSB, é necessário voltar um pouco no tempo e entender as origens das primeiras Grandes Lojas no Brasil. A criação dessas Grandes Lojas se deu por meio de Cartas Constitutivas expedidas pelo Supremo Conselho do Grau 33º, a partir do ano de 1927. Esse passo histórico foi uma resposta direta ao célebre manifesto de Mário Behring, um influente membro da Maçonaria brasileira na época. O manifesto de Mário Behring foi um chamado à autonomia da Maçonaria brasileira, buscando desvinculá-la de qualquer controle externo e garantindo que suas ações e objetivos estivessem voltados para os interesses nacionais. O discurso de Behring foi um chamado apaixonado pela independência e autodeterminação da Maçonaria no Brasil. Esse manifesto teve um impacto significativo na comunidade maçônica do país, inspirando muitos a buscar a formação de Grandes Lojas autônomas e independentes. Essas Grandes Lojas foram se estabelecendo ao longo do tempo, crescendo em número e importância, e com o passar das décadas, surgiu a necessidade de uma entidade que as unisse e as fortalecesse em um objetivo comum. Assim, em 27 de julho de 1966, a CMSB foi fundada, consolidando-se como a Confederação da Maçonaria Simbólica do Brasil. Essa iniciativa foi um passo importante para a unificação das Grandes Lojas brasileiras e para a coordenação de esforços em projetos filantrópicos, sociais e educacionais. A CMSB tornou-se uma plataforma para o intercâmbio de conhecimentos e práticas maçônicas entre as diferentes Grandes Lojas. Além disso, proporcionou um espaço para o fortalecimento dos laços fraternais entre os maçons de todo o país, promovendo um senso de unidade e propósito. A partir de sua fundação, a CMSB tem atuado de forma proativa e responsável na promoção dos princípios fundamentais da Maçonaria, como a fraternidade, a tolerância, a busca pela verdade e o aperfeiçoamento moral. Ela tem se engajado em projetos sociais e filantrópicos, buscando contribuir para o bem-estar da comunidade e da sociedade brasileira como um todo. A CMSB também desempenha um papel importante na preservação das tradições e valores maçônicos, ao mesmo tempo em que incentiva a evolução da Maçonaria para atender às necessidades e desafios contemporâneos. In the midst of USCIS chaos, quarterly stakeholder meetings provide a glimmer of hope for the future of communication between the agency and EB-5 projects. "The forum that the settlement agreement established is not the forum for issues to be raised on a case-by-case basis with regards to projects. That's the point. We're talking generalities."Aaron Grau discusses the EB-5 program and how it is unlike other immigration programs. He explains how the program can affect entire communities, not just individual investors. Mr. Grau also discusses the recent settlement in the Behring case and how it will allow existing regional centers to continue operating. Os primeiros instrutores de Álvaro Barreto foram ninguém menos que seu irmão e o famoso Helio Gracie. Ele treinou duro, guiado por essa dupla incrível por anos, alcançando o posto de instrutor aos 17 anos. Isso foi antes da implementação do atual sistema de faixas na década de 1960 e apenas duas faixas distinguiam a classificação entre aluno e instrutor certificado (branco a azul escuro) . Alvaro Barreto permaneceu na academia Gracie até os 18 anos, quando se mudou para Fortaleza, no Nordeste do Brasil, para estudar educação física. Voltou ao Rio alguns anos depois para aplicar seus conhecimentos de educação física em uma universidade local e se juntou ao irmão que tinha uma academia em cima de uma loja de tecidos na Avenida Nossa Senhora de Copacabana. Em 1968 Alvaro Barreto inaugura a “Academia Corpo Quatro” na Rua Francisco Sá – Copacabana, tornando-se uma das mais antigas escolas de jiu-jitsu do Rio de Janeiro. Desde então, a academia conta com uma verdadeira lista de instrutores “quem é quem”, incluindo Mestre Sylvio Behring, Marcelo “Cazuza” e Sergio “Bolão”. Estima-se que Álvaro Barreto tenha promovido diretamente cerca de 20 faixas-pretas, homens como Sylvio Behring, Guilherme Machado, Wagner Cardozo e Claudio Hego, mas já participou da premiação de mais de 300 faixas-pretas (como Fabricio Werdum, formado por Behring, mas Barreto esteve presente na cerimônia). Barreto foi promovido a faixa preta 8º grau em 1992, e recebeu seu 9º grau Faixa Vermelha pela Federação de Jiu-Jitsu do Estado do Rio de Janeiro em 2005. Enquanto o Brasil se tornou um País unido e ainda maior, apesar das divergências internas: algumas partidárias e outras de luta pelo poder. Seu povo quase sempre, com algumas pequenas exceções, não buscou dividi-lo e sim fazê-lo unido. Qual a dificuldade que a Maçonaria Brasileira teve para se manter unida? Vaidade, busca de espaço, ou falta de objetivo em bem maior? Tivemos grandes maçons que trabalharam pelo engrandecimento da Ordem, buscando a união – até Lojas do Uruguai prestavam obediência ao GOB e os bons maçons entenderam que tínhamos que renumerar as nossas e facilitar a unidade deles, outros que não souberam exercer a tolerância e ser menos para a causa maior nos levaram as nossas cisões. Já tivemos de ouvir de governantes nacionais: “em nome de que maçonaria você fala?”. So its December 1901 Christmas is a fortnight away for the combatants and Christiaan de Wet was tracking his arch enemy, brother Piet. It was revenge he was after and as we all know – it's a meal best eaten cold and unfortunately Christiaan was overheating. While he stewed on the information that his hated brother was instrumental in setting up the National Scouts, made up of Boer turncoats who now fought for the British, across the world the end of 1901 brought with it a number of fascinating events, incidents and issues. On December 1st : A crowd of 100,000 people turned out at London's Hyde Park to demonstrate in sympathy for recently fired British Army General Redvers Buller. He was now being blamed for the disasters at Colenso and Spioen Kop almost two years previously where the Boers had pulverised the British as they tried to relieve the siege of Ladysmith. But on matters more prosaic. On the 2nd December 1901 a man by the name of King C Gillette began selling his safety razors in the United States. He was inspired by something that could be used and then thrown away, thus ensuring future business. It's a bit like Monsanto's seed business these days, but that's another story. Gillette applied for his US. Patent number 775 134 on December 2 1901. His American Safety Razor Company would become the multi-billion dollar behemoth Gillette Company. Bizarrely Following the commercial success of disposable razors, Gillette refocussed his attention on promoting his views on utopian socialism. Strange but true. On December 3rd 1901 the Australian parliament passed its Immigration Restriction Act primarily to restrict non-Europeans from permanently entering the country. Interesting. Then on December 7 1901 The United Kingdom and Germany delivered an ultimatum to the government of Venezuela, after the South American country reneged on bond payments. Venezuelan President Cipriano Castro was given 48 hours to agree to the terms, or to face a blockade of his nation's ports by the Royal Navy and the German Navy. Well some things never change. On December 9 1901 the first-ever Nobel Prizes were announced, with x-ray discoverer Wilhelm Roentgen receiving the first Nobel Prize in Physics, Emil von Behring being awarded the prize in medicine for his discovery of the first diphtheria antitoxin, Jacobus van't Hoff pioneering work in physical chemistry earning him the chemistry prize, Henry Dunant and Frédéric Passy sharing the peace prize, and Sully Prudhomme winning the prize in literature. The bestowal of the prizes came on the fifth anniversary of the death of Alfred Nobel who I mentioned in Episode 1 of this podcast series. The next day December 10 Joseph W. Jones was granted U.S. Patent No. 688,739 for his invention, "Production of sound-records", which was purchased immediately by the Columbia Phonograph Company for production of its disc-shaped Graphophone records. Jones was paid $25,000 – worth around 700 000 dollars in today's moolah. Finally in this series of amazing things that happened in December 1901, Guglielmo Marconi received the first trans-Atlantic radio signal, sent 1,700 miles from Poldhu in Cornwall, England to Signal Hill, St. John's in Newfoundland in Canada on the 12th. December. It was the letter "S" ("..." in Morse code)., He is quoted as saying "there was no doubt that the principle of wireless communication had arrived on a transatlantic scale... This was a utility, and would prove itself beyond argument as a vital aid to shipping and military communication." And on the same momentous day, 12th December in South Africa's Cape Colony, Lieutenant General French finally caught up to General Pieter H. Kritzinger, who had led the Boer incursions into the Cape on three occasion. Unfortunately for him, it was three strikes and he was out.
