I heard Brent Ozar recently talked a bit about the SQL Server platform and its future. He also mentioned that Fabric has distracted the data platform team and it isn't a great product. I tend to agree, and I see too many bugs, holes, and problems. However at the end of this short snippet, he talks about SQL Server with an interesting comment. Is SQL Server feature complete? Well, not really the end. I doubt anyone running SQL Server 2019 is going to stop (or upgrade) just because mainstream support ended. Actually, I wonder how many of you know that SQL Server 2019 passed out of mainstream support on Feb 28, 2025. I do think the 6 or 7 of you running Big Data Clusters likely knew this was the end of any support. I saw a report in the Register on this, which includes a survey of which versions are still running. This is from an IT asset firm and matches Brent Ozar's Population report. 44% of you are running SQL Server 2019, which is the largest percentage. Since there's an additional 32% of you running versions older than 2019, I'm sure that upgrading isn't a priority. Read the rest of The End of SQL Server 2019

Most of us will have more than one job in our career. In fact many of us will likely find a new job in the next five years. I hope I'm not in that group, but I recognize that it's a possibility. We never know when our situation will change, or our employer's situation will change. That is one reason I recommend you keep your resume up to date and continue to work on improving your skills. I saw an office hours short recently from Brent Ozar, in which someone had asked him if they should apply for a job even though they didn't meet all of the requirements or know all of the desired technologies. Brent recommended the person apply, and his reasoning was that often a DBA (or other data pro) often gets asked to do a variety of tasks in an organization. The DBA job often crosses lots of boundaries and may end up working on a Active Directory issues, reporting, ETL, and more. When A DBA leaves a job, the organization looks for a replacement that can handle that same wide variety of things. Read the rest of Fifty Percent

In the Phoenix Project (worth a read), there is a character called Brent, who is to go-to person for everything in IT. I don't know if this character was modeled after Brent Ozar, but I always picture him when I re-read the book, and I suspect he was that person in previous positions. I've been that person as well, and it's both exciting, fulfilling, and very stressful. At Redgate, that person has been Robert C, who is my go-to person for many questions. In the DBA world, I think of Jeff Moden. He's been a prolific and incredible author over the years on many things SQL-related and is a huge proponent of others learning to write better code and better utilize the database platform more efficiently. I suspect in his company, he is the go-to person for most database-related questions and problems. I also suspect he solves most of them very well and has the influence (or power) to effect change. As a part of this effort, I saw Ken Fisher write about being a Script Magpie, which is an interesting analogy. A magpie is a bird that collects various shiny objects. Knowing your SQL Server is patched when an issue occurs is worth the effort of keeping it patched. In this episode of the SQL Data Partners Podcast, we discuss the need for patching and how you might go about it. Special shoutout to Episode 112 with the late Robert Davis on the same subject. There are plenty of people changing jobs in this economy. In fact, I keep hearing that companies are struggling to find people, though many of them are holding off making offers and looking for qualified people. Unlike the early 90s when anyone with an MCSE got hired without too many questions, companies are being picky today about who they hire. I saw recently that Brent Ozar wrote his monthly post asking about who is hiring in the database community. There are a number of comments already with job listings, and I'm hoping there are more that appear when this publishes. If you know of a job, post a comment. The wider you spread the news, the better chance you'll get a person that best fits the position. Read the rest of Finding a New Job

A saw a tweet from Brent Ozar about USB ports on slot machines to charge your devices. There are also wireless charging pads. Convenient, but also potential security problems, especially for IT workers that hold privileged access to code or data. Please, don't use public USB ports for charging a device. You never know if there is any data access taking place. Yes, I know that most phones ask you to approve things, but have you ever hit the wrong button on your UI? Know how to turn it off? How quickly would data move or malware install? Just don't plug in. Read the rest of A Real World Security Reminder

I caught this link in a Brent Ozar newsletter. It's a post from Alice Goldfuss noting she's on the market for hiring. Not that she's looking for a job, but rather, saying she's willing to talk to you if you want to hire her. Quite a bold announcement, but she's quite a talent that many organizations might want. I don't know that many of us could post something and have companies come find you, but I did like the list of items she lays out for a hiring conversation. These are the types of questions that you might keep handy, even as notes, for your next interview. I've often had a series of questions like this that I ask when I go into an interview for a job. I've learned that I need to be curious and careful if I want a successful position for both me and the company. Both of us are trying to put our best foot forward, sometimes stretching the positives and minimizing the downsides. That means that both sides can be surprised later by how the relationship actually proceeds. Read the rest of An Active Job Search

I have seen a few people call for raising the RAM limit in the Standard Edition of SQL Server. In 2016, Aaron Bertrand voiced this, and for 2019, Glenn Berry asked that the limit be raised to 256GB. In the last newsletter of the year, Brent Ozar asked Santa for a 256GB limit. I wonder how many of you would really take advantage of that. In the Azure SQL Database pricing table, to get beyond 128GB of RAM, you need to go to 32 cores. For Azure VMs, you need to purchase even more cores.  AWS EC2 VMs require 32 cores to get to 256GB. I'm hoping a few others get interested and compete for the slot in 2022. One of the things Brent mentioned was about looking for skills to focus on, primarily for "builder," or those that develop new applications. He used a quote from Wayne Gretzky: "I skate to where the puck is going to be, not where it has been." The reference is to pick things that will be relevant in the future (where the puck will be), not where things are today. Read the rest of Where is the Puck Going?

Every so often Brent Ozar releases a report of his Constant Care customers, showing the versions in use. While I don't know this client group is representative of the overall SQL Server customer base, I do think it's close enough to draw some rough conclusions. The top version adoption graph that the summer 2021 report shows has 33-34% of the installed based on 2016, about 34% newer (and under support) versions, leaving the last third running older versions. However, the graph I found interesting is the lower one, which shows the distribution over time. Read the rest of The Slow Upgrade of SQL Server Versions

In my career, I've had to manage many production database instances. In fact, there was a time when two of us were patching hundreds of instances (600?) when MS released patches. That wasn't too often back then, unlike the every other month(ish) schedule that we have with 2017/2019 and the Cumulative Updates. My process was often to test patches on QA/Test servers and then start to roll out the patches to production. We didn't quite follow what Brent Ozar recommends, in that we often patched development servers later. We didn't control those, and unless production was patched, we couldn't get developers to patch their systems. Read the rest of Patching Challenges

I haven't thought about this in some time, but Brent Ozar raises an interesting question: should index changes require change control? I've worked in an organization that didn't consider an index change to be an item that was presented as an official change. They were seen somewhat like adding new users or changing a firewall rule. These were ticket requests that could be triaged and made by an individual group without notifying the rest of IT. I've also worked in organisations where an index change was viewed as a deployment and subject to change control procedures. Not that the network or security people cared about the details of the index, though the help desk might. These just wanted to be aware as any deployment change could affect their departments. What is coming in SQL Server 2016? Richard chats with Brent Ozar about his thoughts on the upcoming version of SQL Server. The conversation digs into how the cloud is impacting SQL Server - features like Query Store were available first in the cloud are now showing up in this new on-premise edition! Speaking of Query Store, who wouldn't want a record of query plans so you can find out exactly why a query in production took a long time? Brent discusses other features including the stretch table to azure, always encrypted, row level security... the list goes on! The question is, when do we get this great version?

We each have our way of going about things–this is what makes us unique.  When it comes to getting data out of the database, many times we might think that SQL Server would go about getting data the same way we would.  If you think about scanning a Microsoft Excel document, how would you find the record you are looking for?  How does that differ from SQL Server? My guest for this episode is Brent Ozar and we chat about internals and how SQL Server processes your request and what you need to consider as SQL Server returns your result. And that's not all, Brent talks about the power of having three stage storage - room of three PCIe based SSD storage, 18 1.8" SATA SSD slots and 8 3.5" hard drive bays. Not only is that a lot of storage, it also provides the flexibility to let SQL Server structure your data into ultra-fast storage, super-fast storage and plain old fast storage. The conversation digs into the challenges of running SQL 2012 on Windows 2008R2 - and why you'd want to upgrade to SQL 2012 in the first place. For Brent's projects, it came down to utilizing Always On technology, which depends on advanced clustering features that 2008R2 struggles with - so SQL 2012 is best on Server 2012! From there, Brent talks about the impact of the cloud on on-premise servers, the need for better instrumentation and understanding of your data when talking to business. It's a fun time to be a DBA!
