What do you do when you don't know what to do? Angela Williams Gorrell joins Mark Labberton to discuss her latest book, Braving Difficult Decisions. With poignant storytelling and theological depth, Gorrell shares how this book was born out of personal crucibles and a yearning to make sense of liminal, paralyzing spaces we all encounter—individually and communally. Together they explore how discernment is not just about decision-making but also about cultivating a life of wisdom, attentiveness, and spiritual depth. Rooted in Christian tradition yet capacious across communities and contexts, Gorrell invites listeners to slow down, ask deeper questions, and consider the spiritual, emotional, and communal terrain that shapes every meaningful decision. Episode Highlights “To not make a decision is to make one as well.” “This journey is about an inward journey that says, how do I look at the state of my own soul?” “Sometimes good decisions don't feel good.” “What if the best idea isn't the good idea? And what if the data can't tell us that?” “Lady Wisdom invites us to dine—to sit at a table with God and others, and not rush the meal.” Helpful Links and Resources Braving Difficult Decisions, by Angela Williams Gorrell The Gravity of Joy, by Angela Williams Gorrell Life Worth Living course at Yale www.angelagorrell.com @angelagorrell on Instagram Show Notes The “liminal space” of facing a difficult decision, arriving at a crossroads Defining discernment as “a practice, not a single moment of choice” The book stems from her decision to leave a tenured-track faculty position, and a painful personal choice about marriage Perpetua and Felicity—early Christian martyrs Individual discernment and soul work Life Worth Living at Yale “Can I be suffering and my life still be good?” The deeply heartbreaking experience of grappling with the question of divorce “I really struggled to find a book that was like, you can be deeply Christian, deeply spiritual, and make this very difficult choice.” “You have to put them in your own heart and soul. You have to grapple with these ideas, and then you write them.” Should we avoid difficult decisions? Discerning, then acting “To not make a decision is to make one as well.” “I wanted to write a book that spoke to that liminal space where we feel paralyzed.” “Good decisions don't always feel good—they might still break your heart” Discusses difference between chronic pain and acute pain in decision-making Discernment helps identify not just what is “right,” but what leads toward peace Michaela O'Donnell and chronic pain Discernment is about “looking at the state of your own soul and becoming a steward of it” “This story that God is nurturing in the world—that story doesn't hinge on like this decision in your life.” Self-examination, and feeling alone in the decision Community-based decision-making “There are all these false binaries.” “What baggage do you have from the past? And how do you make sure that you're not seeing the present moment through the past?” Being as gracious as possible “ What is a way that we can create space to really hear from God?—to hear from each other, and to move forward in a way that we're doing change together and not to each other.” “They need to figure out something together that matters deeply.” The book offers a pathway for congregations and organizations discerning together “How do we do change with people?” Encourages communities to take time, name past wounds, and define who makes decisions Identifies the importance of setting clear expectations, timelines, and spiritual framing “Listening to everyone takes time, but it leads to deeper collective ownership.” Invites communities to ask: What values do we want to embody in this moment? “Sometimes the most valuable part of the process is the slowness.” Wisdom, complexity, and culture Decision-making in our polarized society must account for nuance, empathy, and complexity “What if the data tells us one thing, but the Spirit tells us something else?” Resist “data-driven” decisions as totalizing; discernment includes emotion, history, and spirituality. “Sometimes good decisions don't feel good, you know? Sometimes a life worth living is not about pursuing happiness.” “Lady Wisdom invites us to come and to dine at her house and to sit at a table together.” Names systemic fatigue: “Organizations optimize while their people starve.” Decision-making is affected by race, gender, trauma, context—“there is no one-size-fits-all path” Discernment as a practice, not a moment Braving Difficult Decisions includes exercises and frameworks, such as the “iceberg model” “Most big questions are like an iceberg. There's all this ice beneath the surface that you don't see. That's really the stuff that people are grappling with.” Encourages ongoing wisdom practices: surrender, self-reflection, value-alignment The book is not just a guide for one hard moment, but a long-term companion Ideal for pastors, therapists, educators, spiritual directors, and leaders About Angela Williams Gorrell Rev. What if flexibility at work wasn't a luxury—but the very thing that made your business successful? In this episode, host Natalie Benamou, Founder of HerCsuite®, talks with Kym Insana, a CEO who didn't just build a 7-figure company—she built it around her life. After stepping away from a corporate career to raise her family, Kym knew she still wanted to contribute in a meaningful way. What she created next was something powerful: a business that gives both her and her employees the flexibility to thrive.Kym opens up about what it took to start again, why she prioritized people over hustle, and how a culture of trust and flexibility helped her grow a business that truly works—for everyone involved.3 Takeaways from Kym's Story:Flexibility isn't a perk—it's a foundation. When people have the freedom to work in a way that fits their lives, they show up stronger and more committed.Starting over can be the beginning of something better. Kym left a job she loved, but she didn't lose her sense of purpose—she redirected it.Culture is built by example. When leaders lead with empathy and trust, teams follow suit.✨ Action Step: Ask yourself: If I had complete freedom in how I work, what would it look like? What's one small change I can make today to move closer to that vision—for myself or my team?Keep shining your light bright. The world needs you.Thank you to Kym for being on the show. On today's episode we harken back to a simpler time, an easier time, a time of peace, a time of tranquility, a time of getting too high and reading random stories we found on the internet. This morning, join Midnight Bride, Afternoon Groom, and I for a quaint English breakfast where the only English muffin you'll be getting are the words on this page spoken sensually to your ear-holes. Does Afternoon Groom speak sensually? You bet your butt he does. Does Midnight Bride speak sensually? You bet your front-butt she does. Do I speak sensually? TRICK QUESTION. RHETORICAL. OF COURSE I DO, HOW ELSE WOULD YOU HAVE GOTTEN ALL THE WAY TO EPISODE 292? I've lost the plot - Losta Pasta. Despite a huge boom in technological innovation around the world and an expanding tech industry, the number of graduates who have come from STEM subjects remains relatively low. Just over a quarter of university graduates in the UK have studied a STEM course, and in the US it's less than 1-in-5. Within that, there is still a huge disparity in gender after secondary school compulsory education. Jay and his mother were joined at the hip back then and still today even though Doris now lives on the west coast and he on the east. Doris and Jay had a great understanding and mutual respect for each other. They had plenty of "she and I" moment Jay fondly recalls, when they would go shopping together over the weekend.Doris was a single mom and worked as a Social Worker at the Bronx Court House. Soon enough she found a job there for young Jay so as to keep him out of trouble and off the streets. Jay had been a latch key kid, often on his own when he was younger and his mom didn't want him getting into trouble as he got older."Because there was no real 'dad' figure in the home, family and friends often helped out to fill in as a father figure including my Uncle Johnny," say Jones. There were often many people willing to help Doris and her family because Doris was always helping others. Doris was insistent that Jay from a young age, "treat others with respect, do the right thing, and be honest. My mom would always say "watch out for Karma."Jay would hate to ever break his mother's heart. "I want to continue to make her proud. I want to keep helping others like she helped so many struggling families." Jay goes on to say "it's all about love."
Hello, dear listeners, travelers of the celestial realm, and co-pilots. This new session evolves around the ethos of an album that I just put out entitled 'Bloom', and is one that ushers in a re-invention and reinvigorating of our mental and physical being. As we weather the storms of life's turbulent forces, we need enlightenment and encouragement so that we can pick ourselves up, knock of the dirt and negative vibes, and bring in a rebirth and passion for not only living but striving. That's it, dear listeners, striving!! And THRIVING!! It rhymes, and now all of a sudden I feel like Dr. Seuss. Working to be better tomorrow than we are today requires incremental steps. We hear the expression 'Rome wasn't built in a day' and, well, neither were we. Take the time in planning your re-entry into the world as a better version of yourself every single day. It requires mental energy to develop the creative means to plan our re-entry into our proposed new world, and it takes physical energy to implement those changes around us. But, the biggest and most effect change is within us, in our minds and hearts. Work to calibrate and synchronize these with your new mission. Expend the mental energy so that the task of pushing through your boundaries is well rewarded. This session is your comforting pillow of that much needed mental reset. We at Spaceman's Transmissions propose that you set aside a quiet hour-ish of time to let everything go, and let the tapestry here guide you to the prairie of peaceful vibes. A place where you can assemble your collage of innovative endeavors which will bring your incrementally closer to where you view yourself. Fill in the gaps that separate where you are and where you want to be, as if you are patching holes in the wall for a fresh, new coat of colorful and vibrant paint. Through effort and realization of your potential comes the reward of a newly emerging you! The stormy night that you endured will pass over you, and the stage will reset for you to explore and set up for new scenes to create and thrive in. Lather, rinse, repeat. Don't take your renewals for granted, dear listener. Celebrate each victory as a reward to yourself for reaching and surpassing milestone, not unlike traveling past a dark cosmic tide to reemerge into a realm of a breathtaking starlit field of beauty. I'm with you, dear travelers, and as your co-pilot I have full faith that your journey and effort will yield great success. Okay, yes, as mentioned, shameless plug time (sorry!). I put our a new album entitled Bloom (of course) which can be found by going to https://www.tonepoet-music.com. My music was, is, and always will be free so that you can all have access to it. It is my gift to you, dear listeners, as my thanks for your attendance during the voyages that we undertake. Peace.
