Apple has announced the MacBook Neo, a $600 laptop running on the same A18 Pro processor that was used in the iPhone 16 Pro. Oh, and it has 8GB of RAM and starts at 256GB of storage. Believe it or not, lots of people on the Internet take issue with those specs, so we look at it from the point of view of whether it could be a good machine for photographers who blew all their money on a $10,000 Leica f/1.2 lens. On this week's episode of The MacRumors Show, we discuss first impressions of the MacBook Neo, Studio DisplayXDR, and iPhone 17e.Following its announcement last week, the MacBook Neo arrived this week. Unlike every other Apple silicon Mac, the MacBook Neo is powered by the A18 Pro chip originally developed for the iPhone 16 Pro, making it the first Mac to use an iPhone-class processor instead of an M-series chip. To reach its substantially lower price point, the MacBook Neo makes some compromises. Unlike the MacBook Air, it does not feature keyboard backlighting, a haptic trackpad, P3 wide color, True Tone, ambient light sensing, a camera indicator LED, MagSafe charging, Thunderbolt connectivity, or a 12-megapixel camera with Center Stage, nor does it come with Touch ID as standard. It is also thicker with a slightly reduced battery life, and has larger borders around the slightly smaller display. That being said, it is $500 cheaper than a MacBook Air and is designed to compete with lower-cost Windows laptops and Chromebooks, while expanding the Mac lineup with a substantially more affordable option. We talk through the real-world impact of some of these compromises, including performance with the A18 Pro chip and 8GB of memory. The iPhone 17e retains the same design and price as the iPhone 16e but adds the A19 chip, MagSafe support, Apple's second-generation C1X modem, and 256GB of base storage. Apple also introduced a new Studio Display XDR model, replacing the Pro Display XDR. The new model offers a 27-inch 5K mini-LED panel with up to a 120Hz refresh rate, HDR brightness up to 2,000 nits, and Thunderbolt 5 connectivity. We compare both of these new products to their predecessors, as well as the iPhone 17e and the iPhone 16 as the two lowest-cost iPhones on sale today. All of the newly announced devices became available to pre-order on Wednesday, March 4, with the entire lineup scheduled to launch and begin arriving to customers on Wednesday, March 11. Dave Ginsburg is joined by Mike Potter, Chuck Joiner, Marty Jencius, Jill McKinley, and Eric Bolden to break down a big week of Apple news. The panel discusses visionOS 26.4 beta updates, iOS 26.4 beta, the new iPhone 17e, M4 iPad Air, and refreshed MacBook Air and MacBook Pro models with M5 chips. The biggest debate centers around Apple's brand-new MacBook Neo, a $599 MacBook designed to compete with Chromebooks in education. Is it a smart gateway device for new users or an underpowered compromise? The panel shares strong opinions while also discussing Apple's strategy for expanding the Mac ecosystem. The discussion begins with updates across Apple's platforms, including visionOS 26.4 beta 3, which appears to focus mainly on bug fixes and stability improvements as Apple prepares the platform for a future release. The panel shares their early impressions of the update process and discusses how developers are continuing to explore new possibilities around XR streaming and immersive experiences on Vision Pro. The group then moves into Apple's latest software updates, including iOS 26.3.1 and iOS 26.4 beta 3, along with updates for iPadOS, tvOS, and watchOS. While many of the updates are minor, Apple continues refining features such as Apple Music's Playlist Playground and preparing Apple Podcasts for native video podcast support. The panel also notes Apple's continued improvements to system security and stability while reminding listeners that beta software should still be used cautiously on primary devices. A major part of the episode focuses on Apple's latest hardware announcements. The panel begins with the iPhone 17e, Apple's new entry-level iPhone that includes the A19 chip, improved portrait photography, MagSafe support, and a 256GB base storage configuration while maintaining a competitive $599 starting price. The group discusses how this model could become the ideal recommendation for many users who want a reliable iPhone without paying for a higher-end Pro model. They also explore how the device could work well as a travel phone, a secondary phone, or a practical upgrade for family members who want simplicity and value. Next, the panel examines the newly refreshed iPad Air with the M4 chip, which now includes 12GB of RAM, Wi-Fi 7, and Apple's N1 wireless networking chip. The panel largely agrees that the iPad Air continues to be the "sweet spot" in Apple's tablet lineup, offering powerful performance without the premium cost of an iPad Pro. They discuss how the Air remains the most common recommendation for everyday users who want a capable iPad for productivity, media consumption, and general use. The conversation then shifts to the Mac side of Apple's announcements. Apple updated the Studio Display with Thunderbolt 5 support and upgraded internals, though the panel debates whether the premium pricing makes sense compared to other high-quality displays on the market. The discussion continues with Apple's updates to the MacBook Air with the M5 chip and the MacBook Pro with M5 Pro and M5 Max chips, which bring major performance gains, increased base storage, and improved graphics capabilities. Dave shares that he plans to upgrade his own MacBook Pro to an M5 Pro model, while the panel reflects on how dramatically Apple Silicon has improved Mac performance since the M1 era. The biggest debate of the episode centers around Apple's surprising announcement of the MacBook Neo, a brand-new entry-level MacBook starting at $599 and powered by an A18 Pro chip. Designed to compete directly with Chromebooks in education markets, the Neo introduces a new tier in Apple's laptop lineup. The panel dives into a lively discussion about whether the Neo represents a smart strategy to expand Apple's reach or a compromise that may struggle with longevity due to its limited memory and ports. Mike Potter delivers a passionate critique, arguing that the device feels like a disposable computer aimed primarily at schools, while other panelists see it as a secure, well-built, and affordable entry point for students, travelers, and users who need a simple Mac for basic tasks. The conversation also explores how the Neo might introduce a new generation of users to macOS while potentially competing with low-cost Windows laptops and Chromebooks. Some panelists see it as a gateway device that could lead users to upgrade to more powerful Macs later, while others question whether a refurbished MacBook Air might be a better long-term option. To close the show, Mike Potter shares updates on MacStock 10, including expanded programming, the addition of Ecamm's Creator Camp, and a new Saturday evening event that will be announced soon. The panel reflects on how MacStock continues to grow each year as an important gathering for Apple enthusiasts and creators. Topics and Links In Touch With Vision Pro this week. On this week's episode of The MacRumors Show, we discuss Apple's concentrated week of announcements that saw the introduction of 10 new products. The most significant announcement of the week was the MacBook Neo, an all-new entry-level Apple laptop that starts at $599. The MacBook Neo is designed to compete with lower-cost Windows laptops and Chromebooks, while expanding the Mac lineup with a substantially more affordable option.Unlike every other Apple silicon Mac, the MacBook Neo is powered by the A18 Pro chip originally developed for the iPhone 16 Pro, making it the first Mac to use an iPhone-class processor instead of an M-series chip. The machine features a rounded, colorful design available in Silver, Indigo, Blush, and Citrus finishes, with matching keyboards and wallpapers that give it a more playful appearance than Apple's existing notebooks. At 2.7 pounds, it weighs the same as a MacBook Air.It offers a 13-inch Liquid Retina display with uniform, iPad-style bezels rather than a notch, a Magic Keyboard, a mechanical trackpad, two USB-C ports, 8GB of memory, a headphone jack, a 1080p camera, dual mics, dual speakers with Spatial Audio, and a battery life rated for up to 16 hours.Apple also updated several existing devices with modest specification improvements. The iPhone 17e retains the same design and price as the iPhone 16e but adds the A19 chip, MagSafe support, Apple's second-generation C1X modem, and 256GB of base storage. The 11- and 13-inch iPad Air gained the M4 chip, 12GB of RAM, Wi-Fi 7 support via Apple's N1 wireless chip, and the same C1X modem in cellular models. Meanwhile, the 13- and 15-inch MacBook Air were upgraded with the M5 chip and a higher base storage capacity of 512GB, though the removal of the 256GB option increased the starting price to $1,099.At the high end of the Mac lineup, Apple refreshed the 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro models with the new M5 Pro and M5 Max chips, introducing a "Fusion Architecture" that bonds two 3nmdies together into a single processor. These models also gained faster SSD speeds, higher base storage, and Wi-Fi 7 and Bluetooth 6 via the N1 chip. Battery life increased slightly across the lineup, while GPU cores now include dedicated Neural Accelerators intended to improve AI workloads.Apple also expanded its display lineup with a new Studio Display XDR model, replacing the Pro Display XDR. The new model offers a 27-inch 5K mini-LED panel with up to a 120Hz refresh rate, HDR brightness up to 2,000 nits, and Thunderbolt 5 connectivity. The standard Studio Display was updated at the same time with two Thunderbolt 5 ports, improved speakers, and a camera that now supports Desk View, but retains its 60Hz panel and 600-nit brightness. All of the newly announced devices became available to pre-order on Wednesday, March 4, with the entire lineup scheduled to launch and begin arriving to customers on Wednesday, March 11.Get the right life insurance for you, for less, and save more than fifty percent at https://www.selectquote.com/macrumors00:00 - Intro01:17 - iPhone 17e06:42 - M4 iPad Air08:46 - M5 MacBook Air11:53 - Sponsor: SelectQuote13:40 - MacBook Pro: M5 Pro and M5 Max Overview21:30 - Studio Display25:58 - Studio Display XDR38:05 - Introducing the MacBook Neo

Apple has officially launched the MacBook Neo, a colourful and affordable 13-inch MacBook powered by the A18 Pro chip from the iPhone 16 lineup. Steven Scott and Shaun Preece break down its specs, performance expectations, and accessibility considerations for blind and low-vision users. In this episode of Double Tap, Steven and Shaun dive deep into Apple's surprise announcement of the MacBook Neo, starting at $599 ($499 for education). They explore its aluminium build, four colour options (Indigo, Blush, Citrus, and Silver), and the compromises Apple made to hit the lower price point—like 8GB of RAM, a 256GB base model, and the absence of Thunderbolt ports. They discuss how the A18 Pro chip from the iPhone 16 performs under macOS, the differences between the Neo and the MacBook Air, and why this release is a clear play for the education market against Chromebooks. They also share thoughts on accessibility, battery life, speaker quality, and whether the Neo could be a perfect entry-level Mac for blind users. The conversation then pivots to smart glasses on cruise ships, public privacy concerns, and listener emails covering Oco for road crossings, air fryer cooking hacks, and a highly recommended Bose Quiet Comfort Ultra headset. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Apple's iPhone 17E and new iPad Air are here, bringing more affordable high-performance options with Apple Intelligence support, enhanced durability, and smart new features for blind and low-vision users. Steven Scott and Shaun Preece dive into the big Apple announcements: the iPhone 17E with the A19 chip, 48MP camera, MagSafe support, and doubled base storage at 256GB. They discuss which features blind users will value most, including satellite safety, faster connectivity, and Apple Intelligence on-device. They also break down what you lose compared to the standard iPhone 17—like ProMotion and thread support. The episode then touches on the new iPad Air with M4 chip, iPad use cases for families, and missing features like multiple user profiles. The hosts also explore Google Home's new live camera search and discuss blind employment challenges, inspiring listener letters from around the world, and even unique careers for blind professionals. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Jon and I are back after a brief hiatus, and we had a lot to catch up on, starting with our ever-evolving audio gear! I tested out a new budget microphone, the Boya Measureless, which I'm using in a shotgun mode on a tripod. Jon is actually using the same mic in lavalier format. It's a pretty advanced 4-in-1 mic that even comes with its own charging case and windscreens. I'm glad it's working out for both of us! Shifting gears, I needed some help rationalizing a recent purchase: the Samsung Galaxy Tab S10 FE. It was a good bundle from Costco, including the S Pen (which uses Wacom EMR technology) and a nice magnetic keyboard case, all for around $500. I was looking for a replacement for my Pixel tablet, which Google is apparently not going to continue developing. I like that the S10 FE is IP68 water and dustproof, has a micro SD slot (I added a 256GB card for 384GB total storage!), and supports both Face ID and fingerprint login. I'm even learning how to use Samsung's additional windowing system on top of the standard Android UI. We discussed the rumor of a budget MacBook (codenamed J700) possibly coming out in 2026 with the iPhone's A18 Pro processor. I think it would be fantastic in the $499 range, especially for schools and people new to desktop operating systems. We also touched on the mind-blowing news that an AI-written song hit number one on the Billboard country music chart. I remember being wowed by the first all-CGI movie, The Last Starfighter, back in the '80s, and it feels like AI music is on a similar path to becoming normal. Jon then walked me through a cool, old trick for Google Sheets: using the Google Visualization API with a SQL query embedded in a URL to fetch specific data, which he uses for his weekly jokes. Finally, Jon demoed Open Broadcast Studio (OBS), which is a free, versatile tool for broadcasting and recording, offering commercial-level features for mixing audio and video sources.

On this episode of The MacRumors Show, we talk through Apple's all-new M5 chip and the three updated devices it announced containing it this week. Apple this week announced the M5 chip, featuring improved performance and efficiency with a 10-core CPU and 10-core GPU. Apple says the M5 chip offers up to 15% faster CPU performance and up to 45% faster graphics, compared to the M4 chip. It also contains a next-generation GPU architecture optimized for AI tasks, Neural Accelerators for each core, a third-generation ray-tracing engine, enhanced shader cores, and second-generation dynamic caching. There is also a faster 16-core Neural Engine. It has memory bandwidth of 153GB/s and supports up to 32GB of unified memory. The M5 chip comes to the entry-level MacBook Pro, delivering improved performance. It can also now be configured with up to 4TB of storage. The iPad Pro also gains the M5 chip, along with Apple's N1 chip, a new custom-designed wireless networking chip that provides Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 6, and Thread. Cellular versions of the new iPad Pro feature Apple's C1X modem, which allows up to 50% faster cellular data performance than its predecessor, with much greater efficiency. The new iPad Pro adds the ability to drive external displays at up to 120Hz and now supports Adaptive Sync. The 256GB and 512GB models now start with 12GB of unified memory. The M5 chip is also a key part of a notable update to the Vision Pro. The headset now renders 10% more pixels, can ramp up to a 120Hz refresh rate, and offers three hours of battery life. A new Dual Knit Band feature two straps knitted into a single piece, providing a more comfortable fit. The lower strap has tungsten inserts that provide a counterweight. Apple is also now selling the Logitech Muse spatial stylus for the Vision Pro, and it will begin selling the PlayStation VR2 Sense controller starting next month. Apple's new devices are now available to pre-order, with launch on Wednesday, October 22.
New Episode: Join us for the latest episode of TechAddicts! We're chatting about Linux issues, the Retroid Pocket Classic plus updates on Honor's MagicPad 3 Pro and Amazon's new hardware. Oh, and beware: Xbox Game Pass fans are cancelling their subs due to a price hike! With Gareth Myles and Ted Salmon Join us on Mewe Feedback, Fallout and Contributions Ian Barton (Quick mention as now done elsewhere) Ian was particularly enthused about all things Linux and Open Source so was one of our more active members here in TA. He taught me much about all sorts of tech stuff - a kind chap - very kind - and thoughtful. RIP Dennis Schreiner on Linux Mint and BeeLink Sluggishness I just wanted to say that I have a Beelink with Ryzen 5800 U and Linux Mint is not running well for me on it either. I think Mint is the Problem since it switched to Ubuntu. I have since had a lot of performance issues with it. Also in the Top Linux List it's going downhill. I wouldn't now recommend Mint anymore for beginners and low-spec'd PCs. Since I switched my BeeLink to Fedora Linux (KDE Plasma version) it's very smooth-running again. Also Fedora is pretty easy to operate. Bazzite and Nobara are also beginner-friendly with low spec requirements. I'm enjoying TA, thank you :) CachyOS Ujjwal Sehgal on Retroid Pocket Classic I bought this thinking I'd use it purely for retro gaming but it's starting to become a favourite overall retro gadget. Beautiful OLED touchscreen. Runs Android 14. Google Play store present. Snapdragon G1 Gen 2. 128GB of storage. microSD slot. Icing on the cake is the head phone jack. I find myself using it to listen to music when I'm away from my phone. The squareish screen is great for watching old 4:3 TV content.
See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

The iPhone 17 is finally here. On this episode of The MacRumors Show, we talk through all of Apple's "awe-dropping" announcements this week, including the iPhone 17 lineup, new Apple Watch models, AirPods Pro 3, and more. Apple's AirPods Pro 3 were introduced with significant hardware upgrades, including enhanced active noise cancellation, a built-in heart rate monitor, improved sound processing, and foam ear tips. In addition, Apple previewed a new Live Translation feature also coming to AirPods 4 and AirPods Pro 2. The Apple Watch lineup received a refresh, with the Series 11 touting stronger front glass, 5G connectivity, and better battery life. The Apple Watch SE 3 now includes an always-on display and fast charging, while the Ultra 3 gains a new display and satellite connectivity. Apple also introduced hypertension detection and a new sleep scoring feature, which are available on older models. The iPhone 17 gains a 6.3-inch display, now with ProMotion for the first time in a non-Pro model, and the A19 chip. It features the same new 18-megapixel front-facing camera with Center Stage and a square sensor introduced across the lineup. Apple introduced the iPhone Air as its thinnest iPhone yet with a radical new design. It includes a polished titanium frame, the A19 Pro chip with 12GB of memory, a faster and more efficient C1X 5G modem, a single rear camera, and a 6.5-inch display with ProMotion, but loses out on a physical SIM card slot and stereo speakers. The iPhone 17 Pro and Pro Max were unveiled with a new design that abandons titanium in favor of an aluminum unibody structure, with a new full-width camera plateau and vapor chamber cooling. There is now a 48-megapixel telephoto camera with 4x and 8x optical zoom options. Both devices include larger batteries that deliver over six hours more battery life than their predecessors, with storage starting at 256GB and reaching a new 2TB maximum on the Pro Max. There were also a range of new accessories, including TechWoven cases for the Pro models, a crossbody strap, and a bumper case and MagSafe battery for the iPhone Air.
You dive right into the Apple event fallout with Pilot Pete, Adam, and Dave weighing their wish lists against reality. The iPhone 17 shines with its blistering 3000-nit display, always-on ProMotion, liquid-cooling in the Pro models, and a storage bump to 256GB minimum. The real curveball? The iPhone Air. Sleek, […]

News Amazon is switching its Fire tablets to Android Malcolm Bryant - 'Open source Android', aka AOSP, is really bare-bones. All OEMs to this point have supplemented AOSP with extra functionality in order to have a viable consumer-facing product. In particular of course there is Google Play Services, which gives access to the Play Store and many other core Android features. Google Play Services is not part of AOSP but it seems extremely unlikely that Amazon would omit it if the intent is to make this tablet a mainstream Android device. The iPhone 17 Pro is expected to introduce a significant redesign. The device will move from titanium frame to an aluminum unibody. As part of this new design, the rear camera array will be made out of aluminum and the entire width of the back, with the flash and the LiDAR scanner moving to the right side. To enable wireless charging, there will be a glass cutout in the aluminum chassis below the large camera bump. The Apple logo will move down to be centered to this glass segment, which will lead to some MagSafe accessories such as clear cases being redesigned so that the logo can still be seen. A new cover glass with improved scratch resistance and a better anti-reflective coating are also expected. The new Pro models are rumored to come in black, white, gray, dark blue, gray, and orange finishes. There are also sketchy reports of an iridescent-style "Liquid Glass" colorway. The device is almost certain to be powered by the A19 Pro chip with 12GB of memory – a 50% increase. Thermal enhancements are also expected, along with battery life improvements. All four iPhone 17 models that are coming in 2025 will likely have Apple's first custom-designed Wi-Fi chip with Wi-Fi 7 support. Major improvements are anticipated for the rear camera system, with the telephoto making the jump to 48-megapixels to match the main and ultra-wide cameras. It could also have an 8x optical zoom instead of the current 5x. There are also reports of an all-new "pro" camera app and even an additional camera control. The iPhone 17 lineup is now rumored to be announced on Tuesday, September 9. The series of devices could see a $50 price hike, but a base storage bump from 128GB to 256GB is possible for the iPhone 17 Pro.
