It is a paradoxical and deeply overdetermined text. This troubled young woman was a patient of Breuer's, not Freud's. The prose is exclusively Breuer's, and the approach described reflects his unwavering commitment to hypnosis, the cathartic method, and an associationist model of the mind. But this famous case can also rightly be seen as the beginning of psychoanalysis; indeed, Anna O. herself coined the phrase “the talking cure.” Yet even as the case of Anna O. would come to serve as a kind of skeleton key for unlocking Freud's subsequent sensitivities to listening, transference, and the layered temporalities of psychic traumas, her story would also become an object of mischaracterization and myth-making for Freud and others. Abby, Patrick, and Dan thus begin by addressing the case history as a broader genre while establishing some working distinctions between “Anna O.” as a character in Breuer's text, the real-life Bertha Pappenheim (the person behind the pseudonym), and the subsequent legend of Anna O. as an arch-hysteric whose distress culminated in a (fictious) phantom pregnancy. They walk through Breuer's narrative on its own terms, tackling Anna O.'s many symptoms, especially those involving her intermingling of silence and speech in multiple languages, and the pivotal scene that, per Breuer, represented a breakthrough in the treatment. Their first text is Freud and Breuer's famous Studies on Hysteria (1895), specifically its opening sections. First, they unpack the layered and suggestive series of Prefaces to successive editions of the book, revealing how each iteration charts the differing personal, professional, and theoretical trajectories of the two authors over time, and how they reveal Freud's distinctive approach to memorializing his own intellectual development. Then they turn to the opening essay, originally published in 1893, “On the Psychical Mechanism of Hysterical Phenomena: Preliminary Communication.” Topics include the so-called “cathartic method,” the question of origins, the tensions and productivities of collaborative dialogues (not just between Freud and Breuer, but between these men and their female patients), and our first glimpses of Freud as a distinctively “coy” stylist. Auch gibt es keinen Akku. Aber die Tasten sind griffig und sinnvoll, besonders die Lautstärke lässt sich mit einem analogen Schieberegler sehr intuitiv einstellen. Punkten kann das Gerät auch durch einige durchdachte Funktionen in der Software, welche die beiden anderen Testkandidaten nicht bieten. So wird zum Beispiel erst dann ein Bild von der Vorlage aufgenommen, wenn das Schriftgut absolut ruhig liegt. So kann man mit den Händen die Seiten eines Buches noch in Ruhe glatt streichen, damit die Erfassung verbessert wird. “I belong to the race that in the Middle Ages was blamed for all the plagues and such experiences have a sobering effect, and they do not arouse the tendency to believe in illusions. Much of my life has been devoted to trying to shed illusions. But if there is an illusion worth believing in, at least partially, this is the illusion: that we learn how to divert the impulse of destruction from our own kind, how to stop hating each other because of trivial differences, and stop killing each other for profits. That we stop taking advantage of the achievements of progress to control the forces of nature in a way that will lead to our destruction. Without this illusion, what future awaits us?”  Sigmund Freud, Letter to Romain Rolland, 1923 “I found [this letter] in the collection that Eran Rolnik translated into Hebrew. I met it in the Hebrew version, and when I got back to the German, something else happened. In the Hebrew translation it was talking about the ‘hope'. But then the people in Vienna told me in German this is not ‘hope', this is ‘illusion'. I thought it is even more powerful that he speaks about the power of illusion, the needed illusion. It also brought me back to the beginning of my journey when a friend said the main purpose of the film is to have Freud telling us something like the ‘big father', how should we live today? A tip and insight from Freud. So this is an insight from Freud, a message from Freud over time to us now. I'm not sure it's prophetic. I think there's no prophecies, but it speaks to us now. It speaks to us now.”  Episode Description: We begin with an opening quote from Freud that characterized his sense of being an 'outsider'. Yair then shares with us his own personal journey of discovering Freud as distinct from his father. Having some analytic exposure awakened in him the capacity to, like Freud, ignite his creativity and discover Freud anew. Unique among the many Freud documentaries, Yair utilizes 3D animation techniques as well as dreamlike imagery, newly uncovered archival film and evocative music to invite the viewer to regressively experience the possibilities of the unconscious. We go through four periods of Freud's life which include his struggles with Viennese antisemitism, his discovery of the role of childhood sexuality, his illness and the deaths of his father, daughter, granddaughter and mother and his exile to London. We conclude with his 1923 letter to Romain Rolland where he pleads "that we stop taking advantage of the achievements of progress to control the forces of nature in a way that will lead to our destruction.”    Our Guest: Yair Qedar is an Israeli documentary filmmaker, social activist and former journalist. In his project "the Hebrews", he had been chronicling the lives of Jewish and Israeli figures of the modern Hebrew literary canon. Qedar's 19 feature length documentaries have all premiered at film festivals and have won the director over 30 prizes. "What Freud may have missed here is that the investment in the lost object is a much more reconstructive and integrative process. It's one where we remember all the stories that we have heard from the lost object - the repetitive stories about the childhood of the person or how they met significant others and all these stories are within us and revived, and we have questions. We think: ‘Too bad I never asked about this or that' and in activating these memories we also experience joy and we have a slow process of integration which is not necessarily about loss but about how continuous this person lives in our mind and that is a little bit the focus of this novel. It's in that sense a portrait of the mind and the process of mourning."    Episode Description: We begin with recognizing Cordelia's contributions to clinical and theoretical psychoanalysis in addition to her fiction writing. Her latest novel, Momento, has been described as "a journey through the labyrinth of the dream world" and invites the reader into the experiences of ambiguity, timelessness, and the absurd. On a theoretical level, Cordelia introduces the usefulness of the term lethe - the river in the underworld of Hades that causes people to forget their past when they drink from it. We discuss the distinction between libido and lethe and how they manifest themselves in the analytic setting. She emphasizes the importance of understanding aggression not as a stand-alone but as a container of further meaning. We close with her sharing her childhood story of wanting to please her father with her detailed knowledge - a sublimation that she continues to gain pleasure from to this day.   Our Guest: Cordelia Schmidt-Hellerau, Ph.D.,  is a Training and Supervising Analyst and on the Faculty of the Boston Psychoanalytic Society and Institute as well as of the Swiss Psychoanalytic Society. Her area of expertise is metapsychology, in particular drive theory and its clinical applications. An updated version of her monograph of Freud's metapsychology, Life Drive & Death Drive, Libido & Lethe, is just being published by International Psychoanalytic Books. Her psychoanalytic books and articles have been published in many languages. She has also published three novels and edited a Freud Reader, an Essay Book, and three collections of Short Stories. We're off this weekend, but here's a thematically appropriate episode from earlier this year. We'll be back next Saturday.---While Abby's voice is still gone, Dan and Patrick take in a film on opening day and subject it to some wild analysis. The movie is Civil War (2024), and, to hear director Alex Garland tell it, it's a dire warning of how things could turn out in the US sometime soon. But to Dan and Patrick it's also something else – at once a symptom, a product of underlying anxieties, and a fantasy, a story that's as revealing in what it sets out to portray explicitly as in what it obscures or avoids.  And so, after walking through the film's plot and visual grammar (spoiler alert: there are spoilers after 1:05:00), they turn to the recurrent invocations of looming “civil war” in American discourse. How do our fantasies – and not just Garland's – relate to the actual and “official” US Civil War of 1861-1865, and how do they distort the history of that conflict? For audiences sitting in a movie theater deep within the imperial core, what's is and isn't imaginable in terms of a “civil war,” and why must we, like Garland, turn to images of violence abroad in order to dramatize it?  What would another civil war actually look like in the contemporary US – and what do our anxious expectations of it in the future, as well as our fixations on fantasies about the past, betray about us and our moment in the here and now? We ask what “phantasy” is as opposed to our everyday senses of the word “fantasy,” and then embark on Freud's catalog of his and his patients' many fantasies, which involve everything from mushrooms to abortions to compulsive gift wrapping. As we see, Freud is clearly struggling, and not just with the question of how fantasies in general relate to memories, conscious or otherwise: he's confronting some difficult material from his own dreams and self-analysis. We do some ground-clearing about the history of medicine and the various disciplines in which the young Freud sought recognition and met with frustration; sketch out Freud's biography and the world into which he was born and came of age; and discuss the figure of Jean-Martin Charcot and Freud's time studying hysteria with him at the Salpêtrière in Paris. We pay close attention to an early case study of a male hysteric and how it prefigures some of Freud's later case studies. Along the way, we also talk about Freud's history with eels, anti-Semitism, cocaine, hypnosis, and his lifelong habit of making best friends and breaking up with them. We discuss two short reviews from 1887 (of Averbeck's Die akute Neurasthenie [Acute Neurasthenia] and Weir Mitchell's Die Behandlung gewisser Formen von Neurasthenie und Hysterie [the Treatment of Certain Forms of Neurasthenia and Hysteria] and the essays “Hysteria” and “Hystero-Epilepsy” (1888). Then we get into the first parts of the “Papers on Hypnotism and Suggestion,” including the “Preface to the Translation of Bernheim's Suggestion” (1888 or 1888-89) and the “Review of August Forel's Der Hypnotismus [Hypnotism]” (1889) and finish up with Freud's 1891 essay on “Hypnosis.” Along the way, we talk neurasthenia vs. hysteria, Weir Mitchell's “rest cure,” Mesmer and the origins of hypnotism, the anxieties that underwrite historical arguments over hypnosis and suggestion, the legacies of hypnosis within what comes to be psychoanalysis, Freud's imposter syndrome about his own failures as a hypnotist, and much more. We do some ground-clearing about the history of medicine and the various disciplines in which the young Freud sought recognition and met with frustration; sketch out Freud's biography and the world into which he was born and came of age; and discuss the figure of Jean-Martin Charcot and Freud's time studying hysteria with him at the Salpêtrière in Paris. We pay close attention to an early case study of a male hysteric and how it prefigures some of Freud's later case studies. Along the way, we also talk about Freud's history with eels, anti-Semitism, cocaine, hypnosis, and his lifelong habit of making best friends and breaking up with them.
