This past week, America marked 23 years since thousands of Americans were killed in a series of terrorist attacks in New York City, Shanksville, Pennsylvania, and Washington, D.C.. In our nation's capital, 184 people were murdered when hijackers crashed American Airlines Flight 77 into the Pentagon. Texas State Senator Brian Birdwell (R) was there on September 11th, 2001. He was an Army Lieutenant Colonel at the time and was nearly killed when the explosion knocked him to the ground and burned more than half of his body. Birdwell joined FOX News Rundown host Dave Anthony to share his story of survival. He detailed how he made it out of the Pentagon alive and how he wished for death on more than one occasion as he went through a long and painful recovery. He was almost killed at the Pentagon on 9/11, but he was far from done fighting for his country. Texas State Senator and Convention of States champion Brian Birdwell joins us to share his gripping story.
Today we're starting off with a look back at 9/11 and how it changed the country as we knew it. We talk about why we should focus on faithful advocacy in America and how there is potential for optimism despite how bleak America currently looks. Then, we discuss the Left's responses to 9/11, many of which equate 9/11 to events like the January 6 riot. We'll go over why this is such a dangerous philosophy. We'll look at the multiple stories of violent crime in Memphis from the past few weeks and look at exactly what policies might be to blame. We talk about the racialization of crime stories in politics and on social media and why social justice ultimately kills. Then, we're joined by Father Calvin Robinson to talk about the legacy of Queen Elizabeth and some of the tasteless comments on her death, as well as what's going on in a U.K. city known for child exploitation and how we should reframe the conversation on race. --- Timecodes: [01:00] Remembering 9/11 [12:21] The Left's reaction to 9/11 [23:21] Memphis crime stories [40:09] Interview with Fr. Today we're covering some of the worst hot takes that came from the Left on 9/11 this year, including one from former President George W. Bush. Comparing the attacks on 9/11 to the Capitol riot in January is ignorant at best, and for some reason these people can't seem to differentiate between a group of terrorists and a group of Trump supporters. --- Today's Sponsors: Annie's Kit Clubs provides a fresh way to dive into your favorite craft or try something new. On "EWTN News Nightly" tonight: It's a date that needs no explanation, September 11th, 2001. 2,977 people were killed after 19 men hijacked 4 US commercial flights. Just a couple blocks from the World Trade Center, St. Peter's Catholic Church was used as a relief station in the days following the attack. Pope John Paul II was in his summer residence when he received a call about the tragedy. Growing up in Poland under Nazi and then Soviet occupation, he was no stranger to tragedy, but it was said that this was an event that shook him deeply. The head of the Archdiocese of New York, Cardinal Timothy Dolan joins to tell us what 9/11 was like for him and where he was on that day. And, more than 180 people died when American Airlines Flight 77 slammed into the Pentagon. Lt. Col. Brian Birdwell, now a Texas state senator, never thought that a trip to the restroom would save his life. Edward Felt was among the 40 passengers and crew members who died when their plane, United Flight 93, crashed into a field near Shanksville, Pennsylvania. Felt's brother Gordon, shares how he was able to move forward after his brother's death. Finally this evening, Catholic first responder Will Jimeno says a vision of Christ kept him alive while he was trapped underneath the rubble of the fallen twin towers for 13 hours. He tells us what 9/11 was like for him and how his Catholic faith helped him through it all. Don't miss out on the latest news and analysis from a Catholic perspective. We're doing a bonus episode this week to cover the insanely authoritarian speech that Biden gave yesterday. Ostensibly, Biden is trying to implement policies to fight the pandemic. But the truth is, Biden's 25-minute speech did little more than scapegoat the unvaccinated and divide the country further. Not only does the science not support the vaccine and mask mandates that Biden wants (which we will prove), they are naked power-grabs by the government that any sane person should be more than concerned about. Senator Brian Birdwell joins Amber to discuss his experience at the Pentagon on 9/11, surviving 60% total body burns, and how his 9-11 experience and his Christian faith impact his role as Senator. Questions Senator Birdwell and Amber Discuss: (6:58) When did you begin walking with Jesus? (11:04) The morning of September 11, 2001, you were in an office with two colleagues watching live footage of the twin towers burning. Will you share your experience that morning? (22:17) How did you get to a place where you were no longer burning? (44:06) What were some thoughts that raced through your mind as you laid in the hospital? (55:14) More than 60% of your body was severely burned, you spent 26 days in intensive care, you underwent 39 surgeries over 4 years, what was your mobility like now? (59:35) In 2010, you were elected to the Texas senate. As we close out, how would you say your experience on 9/11, your healing journey and your faith impact your job as Senator? Quotes to Remember: “I told Sandy and Cheryl, I was going to step out to the men's restroom, and that I'd be back momentarily and those are the last words that I would speak to my two co workers.” “I'm 15 to 20 yards from an 80 ton jet making penetration into the [Pentagon] at 530 miles an hour with about 3000 gallons of jet fuel still remaining when it makes impact.” “I'm set ablaze…[M]y total body external injury was a 60% total body burn with about 40% being third degree burns. But my most immediate life threatening injury was my inhalation injury.” “I gave up. Screamed out, ‘Jesus, I'm coming to see You' in a very loud voice, collapsed to the floor and accepted that I was going to die that day. I went from the calamity of trying to survive to the peace and quiet of knowing where I would spend eternity.” “The most emotional thing from September 11 is when they put that face mask over me….I'm either stepping into eternity or I'm going to wake up here, but the Lord's in charge.” SHOW NOTES cont. A "Bonus" Episode, with apologies for the incorrect episode airing on January 16, 2016. Today's episode will be dedicated to an interview with Ben Stratmann, the Chief of Staff for Texas State Senator Brian Birdwell. Please note the day and time for this episode (Monday, January 18, 2016), 11:30 Central Time! I realize that with the increased interest generated from Governor Abbott's surprise endorsement last Friday, this would be a great time for news and phone calls - unfortunately, circumstances are such that I cannot accommodate a podcast for news and phone calls until the end of the month. At that time we will dedicate at least one episode exclusively to Governor Greg Abbott's inclusion of a call for a Convention of States in the "Texas Plan", the legislative priorities he has for the next session! In the meantime, please consider hearing from a Chief of Staff for a State Senator. Mr. Stratmann will share insights on how a State Legislator's office functions, and give some tips on how to best contact your legislator, and advocate for an issue. That Provident Article" is hosted by Convention of States Texas volunteer Paul Hodson, with the Convention of States since late 2013, a District Captain in Texas from February 2014 through November 2015, and now serving as Co-Director for the Convention of States Texas.
