25 years ago, the United States was rocked by the tragedy of 9/11. My guest today is Virginia “Ginny” Buckingham, author of the deeply personal memoir, On My Watch. Before September 11, 2001, Ginny was one of Massachusetts' most accomplished young public servants. She served as chief of staff to two governors and, at just 35 years old, became the first woman to lead the Massachusetts Port Authority, which oversees Boston's Logan International Airport. Then came 9/11. American Airlines Flight 11 and United Airlines Flight 175—the two planes that struck the World Trade Center—had departed from Logan. In the anguish and confusion that followed, America searched desperately for answers. Politics searched for someone to blame. And Ginny Buckingham became a target. She was publicly condemned, politically abandoned and eventually forced to resign. Two years later, she was personally named in a wrongful-death lawsuit. The 9/11 Commission would ultimately establish that Logan's security checkpoints had operated according to the federal regulations in place at the time. But public vindication could not erase the private wounds. Ginny endured years of guilt, self-doubt and post-traumatic stress. As she writes, she was not shattered instantly, like hand-blown glass, but gradually—like a bottle cast into the sea and slowly broken apart by the relentless movement of the waves. As he reached for some paper, Hingson felt and heard a muffled explosion and the tower bent drastically before snapping back into place.Of course, it was American Airlines Flight 11 crashing into the tower - the first of four planes hijacked by Al Qaeda terrorists as part of the worst terrorist attack in U.S. history.Hingson was born blind but knew every inch of his office and the North Tower. Aviation News Two Delta Air Lines Jets in Mid-Air Near Miss at Atlanta Hartsfield as Air Traffic Control Direct Departing Aircraft into Path of Other Plane This was a mid-air near-miss at ATL with two Delta Air Lines flights: Flight DL-1568 from Pittsburgh to Atlanta operated by a Boeing 737-900, and Flight DL-2472 from Atlanta to Rochester, New York, an Airbus A321. The airport was experiencing weather delays, and controllers were working at full capacity to clear the backlog. Departures and arrivals were taking place on parallel runways. DL-1568 had been scheduled to land three hours earlier and was diverted to Chattanooga to wait out a storm. The arriving flight 1568 elected to make a go-around after seeing a Frontier flight taking a long time to clear the runway. At the same time, departing flight 2472 was directed to turn and climb to the same altitude as the other Delta flight. A TCAS Resolution Advisory alarm sounded, and the aircraft came within 1,800 feet of each other. NTSB Chair, Victim's Families Call Upon Congress toTake Action on 50 Safety Recommendations After DC midair It's been a year and a half since American Airlines Flight 5342 and a U.S. Army Black Hawk helicopter collided near DCA, killing 67 people. Six months ago, the NTSB issued safety recommendations. NTSB Chair Jennifer Homendy and families of the victims want Congress to take action on the 50 open recommendations. So far, Congress has failed to pass either the Rotorcraft Operations Transparency and Oversight Reform (ROTOR) Act or the Airspace Location and Enhanced Risk Transparency (ALERT) Act. Statement from NTSB Chairwoman Jennifer Homendy on the open recommendations for the investigation of the January 2025 midair collision near Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport In part: “Six months ago, we concluded our investigation and adopted our final report, issuing 75 findings and 50 safety recommendations, all of which must be implemented to prevent reoccurrence, yet we are no closer today to addressing many of the serious safety gaps that contributed to this terrible tragedy. “Every day that passes without implementation of all 50 NTSB recommendations represents a continued and unacceptable risk to public safety. “The National Transportation Safety Board provided a clear roadmap to improve aviation safety and reduce the risk of another catastrophic midair collision. Now it’s time for action that was promised months ago; we owe it to the victims, to the families who continue to grieve their loss, and to the millions of people who rely on the safety of our aviation system every day.” A Civilian Plane Crashed in New Mexico. Was Military GPS Jamming To Blame? On May 14, 2026, a Trans Aero MedEvac Beechcraft King Air 90 crashed in the New Mexico Capitan Mountains, killing four people. The NTSB’s preliminary report [PDF] stated that routine military GPS jamming exercises from White Sands Missile Range were active at the flight’s altitude and location. ADS-B was also degraded. The crew's ForeFlight pre-flight package briefed the pilots on the jamming threat. Air Force eyes next-gen engine ‘integration' by 2030 Although no decision has been made, the Next Generation Adaptive Propulsion (NGAP) system could go into the F-47 Next Generation Air Dominance (NGAD) platform. Both Pratt & Whitney and GE Aerospace are developing NGAP prototypes which the Air Force intends to compete for future production. NGAP is designed to be platform agnostic and is a multi-billion-dollar program using adaptive-cycle jet engines for sixth-generation combat aircraft that change jet engine characteristics in flight, allowing more fuel-efficient cruising or increased thrust. GE Aerospace and Pratt & Whitney (RTX) are the two competitors, building prototypes designated GE’s XA102 and P&W’s XA103. As of late July 2026, the program completed a pre-prototyping readiness review, with both contractors having met the Air Force’s design requirements, clearing the way to begin building and testing hardware. ‘Final' Unleaded Avgas Transition Plan Released The so-called “Version 1.0” of the 72-page FAA transition plan was released, updating a draft plan released earlier this year. The FAA says it's keeping the 2030 target date for replacing 100LL with unleaded fuel. Unleaded fuel takes center stage at AirVenture The FAA took some of the comments received to heart, including communication and transparency. AOPA reports, “the FAA plans to release new versions of the transition plan after each phase. The agency also plans to publish two additional documents soon: an FAQ on unleaded fuel and a summary of the input received during the public comment period in early 2026.” Four transition phases make up the plan: Authorizing fuels and doing comparison testing. Focus on unleaded fuels gaining market experience for the benefit of fuel producers, aircraft owners, fuel retailers, and others. Wide-scale transition, first in the Lower 48 by 2030. Followed by Alaska two years later. Liberation Times' Christopher Sharp reported Saturday that 40-year Republican Senator Mitch McConnell and his chief of staff, Terry Carmack, were likely mostly responsible for derailing efforts to include UAP transparency legislation in the National Defense Authorization Act for 2026. Also, the strange story of David Booth, a Cincinnati resident who, in May 1979, began having bizarre dreams every night for 10 days straight of a commercial airliner crashing. After the seventh time having the dream, Booth contacted the Federal Aviation Administration to report what he was experiencing. An unidentified black male slashed a passenger with a sharp object while transiting on the E train. No other details were provided regarding the attack.Kentucky: This afternoon the NTSB released the highly-anticipated preliminary report regarding the fatal crash of UPS Flight 2976 that occurred one month ago. The photos provided in the accident report shed light on what happened; the port-side engine completely ripped away from the wing due to a failure of the pylons holding it to the aircraft. In short, the engine flew itself off the wing due to fatigue and degradation of the mechanisms attaching the engine to the wing.Analyst Comment: Now, we know why the FAA grounded all MD-11 and DC-10 aircraft in the United States immediately after the crash. //The Wire//2300Z January 30, 2025////PRIORITY////BLUF: COMMERCIAL AIRCRAFT COLLIDES WITH ARMY HELICOPTER IN WASHINGTON D.C.// -----BEGIN TEARLINE------HomeFront-Washington D.C. - At approximately 9:00pm last night, American Airlines Flight 5342 collided with a VH-60M Blackhawk helicopter while on short final approach to Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport (DCA). Both aircraft collided catastrophically, with the debris field largely landing in the Potomac River southeast of the airport. Following the incident, an extremely large scale Mass Casualty (MASCAL) Incident was declared, leading to a large inter-agency rescue operation. Throughout the night, 28x fatalities were reportedly recovered from the involved aircraft. This official casualty figure is expected to rise as the manifest of the American Airlines flight indicated 64x souls onboard at the time of the incident, and 3x crew onboard the Blackhawk. So far, no survivors have been reported from either aircraft. AC: Due to water temperatures being at freezing levels, even if anyone did survive the initial violent collision it is extremely unlikely for anyone to have survived being immersed in water at these temperatures for any length of time.Regarding the manifest of the Blackhawk, few details have been released due to both the privacy considerations for the families, as well as security concerns. The VH-60M helicopter in question was a US Army helicopter from Bravo Company, 12th Aviation Battalion operating out of Davison Army Airfield in Fort Belvoir, VA. This airframe was operating under the callsign of "PAT25", functioning as one of the Priority Air Transport aircraft for VIPs throughout the National Capitol Region (NCR). Per the latest information released by authorities, no VIPs were onboard at the time of the incident as this was a training flight.-----END TEARLINE-----Analyst Comments: At the moment, there are no indications of malign action regarding the collision of AA5342 and PAT25. So far all indications line up suggesting that not only was this a tragic accident, but that the potential for this exact scenario to happen has been many years in the making.Right now, one of the more overwhelming aspects of this accident is that of engagement farming, outrage-baiting, and the spread of generally false information. Or course, the question on everyone's mind is "How could this have happened?". Unfortunately, when it comes to Army aviation, especially within the National Capitol Region (NCR), this mishap is completely within the realm of possibility.Over the past few years, it also became popular for military aviation to fly without their transponders on, or perhaps more accurately, without using ADS-B transponder modes. In short, few military helicopters even have ADS-B, and those that do have been less inclined to use it. As much outrage abounds regarding this helicopter "flying dark" one must remember that most military aircraft do not have even have ADS-B transponders equipped, rather relying on different transponder modes to make their presence known to aircraft around them. As such, the absence of ADS-B data on public flight tracking websites does not automatically mean that the aircraft was "flying dark", they could have been using a different transponder mode that wouldn't show up on many public websites.Further concern has been expressed by various entities (to include the POTUS AND VPOTUS) regarding the cause of the collision. Rather unusually, both the President and Vice President have highlighted deficiencies among Air Traffic Control operators which may have lead to this incident. While many will take this as a crass and inappropriate response while families are still grieving, there may be more to the story than meets the eye, which requires the dropping of sugarcoating.
