China's economy grew last year at the second slowest rate in almost half a century - a sign of how the country's strict coronavirus regulations have affected businesses. Official figures show the gross domestic product of the world's second-largest economy rose by 3% in 2022. The policy had a major impact on the country's economic activity last year but the sudden relaxation of the rules has led to a jump in Covid cases that threatens to also drag on growth in the early part of this year. Jacqueline Rong, deputy China economist from the BNP Paribas bank says the data came in stronger than our expectation. Nevertheless, it reveals the hard hit to the Chinese economy from a zero-Covid policy and a property rout in 2022. Experts have voiced caution over China's economic numbers - with some warning that the trajectory of the data rather than the figures themselves are a useful guide to how the country's economy is performing This show is part of the Spreaker Prime Network, if you are interested in advertising on this podcast, contact us at https://www.spreaker.com/show/4090160/advertisement
Dom welcomes back David Zweig, a columnist who's been featured in The Atlantic, New York Magazine, Wired, and New York Times. Yesterday, Dom and producer Dan spoke lengthily about a series of Tweets sent by Zweig questioning the rhetoric centered on Coronavirus and the vaccine. Repeatedly, Zweig shows, the New York Times has referred to anybody who questions the vaccination and peripheral edicts as ‘anti-vax,' painting the person with an inaccurate broad brush. Zweig explains the importance of skepticism, particularly in the world of science, and explains why this rhetoric, particularly from one of the country's biggest newspapers, is damaging in the grand scheme of Coronavirus discussion. The Government has confirmed no new Coronavirus restrictions will be imposed in England before Christmas, because there's not yet enough evidence about the impact to justify them.
The government declined to introduce further coronavirus restrictions after a two hour cabinet meeting yesterday. But the prime minister did say he did reserve the possibility of taking further action. Scientists are warning that any action that is going to have to be taken must be taken fast if it is to have any impact on slowing down the spread of Omicron.
