Bailey was 53. Bavis was 31. A quarter century later, the team still wears an "AM" sticker on the back of every helmet, and the Kings mascot carries Bailey's name. 9:20 — Billion-Dollar Blame Game & Delta's Bad Week Lineage Logistics is suing solar operator Altus Power and contractor Pearce Services for more than $1 billion, claiming they sparked the June 17 Boyle Heights warehouse fire that burned for over a week and left the neighborhood with foul air, rodents, and insects for months. The suit alleges roughly 200 faulty electrical connections were known about by May and the contractors re-energized the array anyway. Both companies deny it. Then: two separate Delta flights lost cabin pressure. On Flight 2311 out of LAX, the oxygen masks dropped and the 737 fell 27,000 feet in about ten minutes before diverting to Las Vegas. 9:35 — Wrong House, Wrong Night A man in Hollywood Hills West told police he was robbed and beaten during an overnight home invasion — five suspects, a gun, a stolen safe, and a getaway car. There was just one problem with his story. Police say he doesn't live there and wasn't house-sitting either. Investigators now believe the victim was a squatter, which means somebody picked the wrong house on the wrong night, twice over. It happened a day after a reported hot prowl at Quentin Tarantino's place. 9:50 — The "No-Cost" Olympics Starts Costing The City Council voted 8-3 to authorize $13.04 million in debt financing for 107 non-patrol LAPD vehicles for the 2028 Games — trucks, vans, mobile substations, hazmat rigs. A separate $30 million request for 300 patrol cars got pushed back for more review. Councilmember Eunisses Hernandez voted no and pointed out the obvious: L.A. was promised a no-cost Olympics, and the vehicle tab alone is headed north of $40 million. If convicted, she faces up to 20 years on each count. 6:35 — 2 L.A. Lyz Glick Best was married to Jeremy Glick, one of the passengers who fought back against the hijackers aboard United Flight 93 on September 11, 2001. That morning, from her parents' farmhouse in the Catskills, Lyz spent about 30 minutes on the phone with Jeremy. They stayed calm. They assessed the situation together. And he told her what he wanted if he didn't make it off the plane. Now taking over the entire first floor of Sparks (the old M&S building), this year's festival on Saturday 19th September will feature over 80 LGBTQ+ comic artists, up from 60 last year. Guests include Hamish Steele (creator of Dead Endia on Netflix) and Oli Hicks (co-creator of the softball lesbian romance Grand Slam Romance). Entry is free, with donations welcome, and the team are especially proud that the festival was the first LGBTQ+ dedicated comic art festival of its kind in the UK. "Comics and zines have such a rich history in queer culture," Chris explains. In this episode, we are going to listen in on the ATC communications from the recent near collision between Delta and United flights in Phoenix. Delta Flight 1070 had been cleared to land at Sky Harbor's Runway 8 when a collision warning went off in the cockpit. The flight, carrying 245 passengers, was inbound from Detroit. At the same time, a similar alert was set off on United Flight 1724, arriving from San Francisco, carrying 123 passengers and six crew members.
