Can your child's emotional meltdowns actually be opportunities for powerful connection and growth? In this insightful episode, Dr. Kahlila Robinson and Sarah Gerstenzang join Rebecca to discuss their upcoming book, "The Self-Regulation Workbook for Children Ages 5 to 8." They share practical strategies for helping children manage their emotions while strengthening the parent-child connection. Drawing from both professional expertise and personal parenting experiences, they offer compassionate advice for parents feeling overwhelmed by their children's big emotions and provide actionable tools that families can use immediately. Key Takeaways: → Co-regulation is foundational to self-regulation: Children learn to manage their emotions through their parents' calm, supportive presence during moments of distress, starting from infancy. → Parents must regulate themselves first: To help children with emotional regulation, parents need strategies to stay calm during challenging moments. Setting this foundation consistently over time is more effective than quick fixes. → The 5-8 age group is uniquely challenging: These children appear more capable but still lack problem-solving skills and emotional perspective, creating a gap between expectations and abilities. → Playfulness is powerful: Even just 5 minutes of play builds connection, which motivates children to maintain or return to regulated states when emotions run high. → Repair is essential: When parents make mistakes (we all do!), acknowledging them and discussing them later creates valuable learning opportunities and models healthy emotional management. Quotes from the Guests: "Any parent is capable of this. If you're worried about doing this right, you're already in a good place because it means you're thinking about it. You care about supporting your child." - Dr. Kahlila Robinson "Children five to eight, they're pretty young still, and they really need their parents. It's very important that the parents have a certain comfort and mindset around helping their children regulate." - Sarah Gerstenzang The Self-Regulation Workbook for Children Ages 5 to 8 Available April 15, 2025 on Amazon and select bookstores Publisher: Ulysses Press Learn more about your ad choices. Today's episode couldn't be more timely. We're exploring the important topic of resilience and how to support our kids in navigating challenging times. Joining me is Dr. Tovah Klein, author of the insightful new book Raising Resilience: How to Help Our Children Thrive in Times of Uncertainty. Dr. Klein is a renowned developmental psychologist and the director of the Barnard College Center for Toddler Development. With over 30 years of experience, she's dedicated her career to understanding what children need to thrive, regardless of their circumstances. She's a sought-after advisor to children's media and organizations, including National Geographic Kids and Apple TV+. In her latest book, Tovah explains why resilience isn't a fixed trait but a skill that can be nurtured through supportive relationships and intentional parenting practices. And so in today's conversation, we unpack what it means to be an anchor and container for our children, explore the five pillars of resilience—security and trust, emotional regulation, agency, social connection, and self-acceptance—and discuss why understanding our own emotional baggage is key to helping our kids build resilience. I love the way Tovah frames resiliency as a skill that is built together between parents and children because so often we think of it as an individual characteristic. And as you'll hear in this conversation, it all starts with the connection between us. There's so much food for thought and hope. About Dr. Tovah Klein Tovah P. In this episode, Lisa and Tovah discuss:The nuisance stressors your teen has to handle every day. Building resilience in the face of uncertainty. What it means to be a buffer for your child. Parenting styles that have been beneficial or harmful to building resiliency in teams. Why you have to work on yourself to build resiliency in your children and teens.Key Takeaways: Stressors happen to your teen every single day. Helping them through these nuisance stressors will help them build the resilience to handle any stressor. As a child's arousal to the stressor increases, the parent tunes in to the child to connect with them in what they need. Over time, your child will learn to manage that stress on their own because they know they are not alone. Holding healthy boundaries helps your children build resilience. Boundaries can come from a gentle place of care and communication and aren't harmful. Children need their parents to make the hard decisions and hold those boundaries.Building resilience in your child begins with you. “It's so important that parents be forgiving of themselves because it is in this relationship that our teens learn how to succeed, however, you want to define success, and resilience is part of that success.” – Dr. Tovah KleinAbout Dr. Tovah Klein: Tovah P. What happens when creators consider what lifelong human development looks like in terms of the tools we make? And what philosophies from Sesame Street can inform how to steward the power of AI and social media to influence minds in thoughtful, humane directions? When the first episode of Sesame Street aired on PBS in 1969, it was unlike anything that had been on television before - a collaboration between educators, child psychologists, comedy writers and puppeteers - all working together to do something that had never been done before: create educational content for children on television. 494. We interview Congressional Candidate Lessie LeBlanc. Lessie is one of the eight candidates running in the 3rd congressional district race. She's hoping to defeat current congressman Clay Higgins. Leblanc currently works policy and organizing for the Promise of Justice Initiative. She also holds the District 42 seat on the Democratic State Central Committee and says if elected to Congress, her main focus will be reproductive rights and gun legislation. “The recent Roe versus Wade decision complied with the absolutely abysmal legislation that has been passed at the state level and the absolutely abysmal amendment that was added to our constitution last year stripped these rights. We have stripped these rights away from women, and women want them back. We're going to take them back,” Leblanc said. She says polls show most Americans want abortion access to be available to people who need it. “If state legislatures refuse to do the will of the people, then we will have to take care of it at the federal level,” she added. Leblanc says she also has big plans for gun control. She says banning assault weapons should be addressed. She also wants people to be aware of ghost guns, or 3D printed guns, that could become a growing problem. In addition, she says the national criminal background check system needs to be re-vamped. “I think firearms do have a place in our society. I don't think an outright ban is the answer. No ban has ever worked. Why would it start working now?” This week in Louisiana history. November 5, 1996. Mary Landrieu, first Louisiana woman to be elected to US Senate. This week in New Orleans history. Buried Alive November 5, 1970. Many still remember the guy who had himself "buried" in front of the Taco Bell at 4001 Veterans Highway back in 1970 but few remember the details. Below is a November 5, 1970 article which describes why 23 year-old Gretna resident John Diffley found himself in a home-made 3x3x8 foot coffin on public view via a peek-through shoot for the cost of a mere quarter. Diffley's aim was to break a 63-day "buried alive" record by enduring 65 days underground to earn college money. On day 22 at 11 P.M., two men dropped a five-foot Blue Runner snake down the shoot and Diffley wound up at Ochsner hospital -- treated for shock. The men, both Avondale Shipyard workers, were arrested for criminal mischief, although they claimed to be merely playing a practical joke. Several days later, Diffley returned to the tomb, determined to break the record, but had to start over again at day one. I can find no information as to whether John Diffley successfully met his goal. This week in Louisiana. Virus Outbreak Kid Booster intro and wrap
Kids ages 5 to 11 should get a booster dose of Pfizer's COVID-19 vaccine, advisers to the U.S. government said Thursday. If the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention agrees, as expected, it would open a third COVID-19 shot to healthy elementary-age kids — just like what is already recommended for everybody 12 and older. The hope is that an extra shot will shore up protection for kids ages 5 to 11 as infections once again are on the rise. Earlier this week, the Food and Drug Administration authorized Pfizer's kid-sized booster, to be offered at least five months after the youngsters' last shot. The CDC takes the next step of recommending who actually needs vaccinations. Its advisers debated if all otherwise healthy 5- to 11-year-olds need an extra dose, especially since so many children were infected during the huge winter surge of the omicron variant. But the U.S. now is averaging 100,000 new cases a day for the first time since February. And ultimately, the CDC's advisers pointed to growing evidence from older kids and adults that two primary vaccinations plus a booster are providing the best protection against the newest coronavirus variants. Kids ages 5-through-11 years old are now eligible for COVID-19 vaccine boosters as infection rates are increasing again nationwide. Then, the pandemic may change the way large buildings are designed to prevent airborne diseases from spreading. Next, after a series of appeals, one murder conviction set aside, an audit finding sloppy work by the San Diego crime lab, an intervention from an innocence project and preparations for a new trial, this week the San Diego County District Attorney's office announced it would not re-try Jane Dorotik. She is now free after spending 20 years in prison. Plus, Bike-to-Work Day returns to San Diego County Thursday for the first time since 2019. And finally, a play about two different generations of sisters, one set in the 1960s and another in the present day, both living in the same house. "Mud Row'' opens at Cygnet Theatre with previews starting Wednesday, and opening night on Saturday.
