Penn State wrestling is off and running with the February portion of its schedule. The Nittany Lions have their first double dual weekend of the season on the horizon. Michigan battles head coach Cael Sanderson's team at the Bryce Jordan Center on Friday (6 p.m. ET, Big Ten Network) before Maryland invades Rec Hall at 1 p.m. ET on B1G+.“It's unusual, as we talked about throughout the year, just the scheduling where we got Friday, Friday, Friday, and now we have a Friday, Sunday,” Sanderson said Monday. “But I think these weekends are really good training for the national tournament conference where you have a multiple-day tournament. So, we look at it all as training. And obviously, Michigan's one of the top programs in the country. So we're looking forward to that match, another match in the Jordan Center, and then being able to kind of turn around and wrestle Maryland, who's wrestling really well. I mean, they've done a really good job there, and they've been very competitive.”We cover those matches and much more on this week's Blue-White Illustrated Penn State wrestling show. Host Thomas Frank Carr and reporter Greg Pickel start the conversation with the latest news from the recruiting world. The nation's top Class of 2026 recruit, Bo Bassett, picked Iowa over the Nittany Lions and others on Tuesday night.

It marked their 65th consecutive dual meet victory. From there, the conversation turns to the fifth-ever top-two meeting between the Hawkeyes and Nittany Lions. Iowa won the first two as the No. 1 ranked team in the country. Penn State won the second two with the same ranking. Who will win on Friday night? We discuss the top bouts of the night, predictions, and key storylines to close out this week's episode. In the U.S., 16,000 children are diagnosed with cancer each year, and more children die from cancer than any other disease. Fighting, researching or finding a cure for childhood cancer is obviously as grave a topic as one could contemplate. But perhaps the annual dance marathon known simply as Thon, at the Bryce Jordan Center on the campus of Penn State University this weekend is one of the most joyful events staged anywhere or any time to raise money for such an illness that can bring so much sadness. Thon is a 46-hour, non-stop dance marathon that is the world's largest student-run philanthropy. Since its inception in 1973, Thon has raised more than $219 million to provide emotional and financial support to children and families that have been impacted by childhood cancer. The money generated by Thon goes to Four Diamonds at Penn State Children's Hospital in Hershey. On The Spark Monday, Suzanna Graney, Executive Director of Four Diamonds at Penn State Health Children's Hospital, said Four Diamonds has benefited from Thon since 1977,"e have been collaborative partners ever since, making it possible for Four Diamonds to cover the cost of care for all of our Four Diamonds families at, our Children's Hospital in Hershey. And to be a Four Diamonds family, your child would be diagnosed under the age of 22, living in Pennsylvania and getting your primary oncology care from Penn State Health Children's Hospital. We are covering all those costs that are not covered by insurance or other means, taking that financial pressure off of the family, because when cancer happens to a child, it happens to the entire family. So the other thing that we're able to do is provide a lot of support services for the patient and the family members to have everything that they need mentally, socially, emotionally, spiritually as they're walking this path together. So all of those specialty services like child life and music therapy and art therapy are covered for all of those kids in those families." Much of the money raised by Thon goes toward research. Graney added,"Finding new ways to use the current drugs that we have. Finding new applications of new drugs or new therapies using the body's immune system differently to activate your immune system to fight cancer is one of the biggest things that has happened in the last ten years. It's been exciting to be on the precipice of new discovery, and to be able to find what we talk about as local research that has a global impact. The research that's happening in Hershey, Pennsylvania, has the potential to change the world for kids everywhere. We're really excited because of Thon's steady support and the community support we've been funding, a number of researchers at the Penn State College of Medicine, two of those labs have been funded for more than a decade through Thon and Four Diamond support, and they are both on the cusp of opening clinical trials for kids, in the coming year, which means that what we've learned in that lab is now ready to go into patient care." Will Vincent, the Executive Director of Thon was asked what makes it special,"It is an entirely student run organization. But on the other side, we also have a tremendous amount of outpouring of support from Penn State alumni, corporate sponsors, and just the overall Penn State community and beyond. So there are students on this campus that work tirelessly all year long. Thon has become so much more than just a weekend in February. So our student volunteers work all year long. But the support that we get from every single person that has heard of Thon's mission and wanted to push it forward is absolutely tremendous. So it is a huge community that expanded. Its so far out just beyond Penn State's campus and just State College." Last year, Thon raised more $15 million.Support WITF: https://www.witf.org/support/give-now/See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Penn State vs. Michigan plus a scandal News broke on Friday afternoon that Michigan head coach Jim Harbaugh would be suspended from all games for the remainder of the season by the Big Ten and commissioner Tony Pettiti. While the legal case continues to evolve, we'll discuss what the role of a head coach is on the sidelines and how Harbaugh's absence can affect the team. We'll discuss what the role of a head coach is on game days and what Michigan will potentially be missing. Also, does this move give Michigan extra motivation? We'll turn to Hawkins to get a player-level understanding of how the team will likely feel about the situation. But the actual game still matters While headlines off the field are one thing, the game is another. We'll discuss how the Michigan offense matches up with the Penn State defense and vice versa. You'll also hear features, look at the Big Ten Schedule for this week, and more. But what type of game are we in store for? Penn State head coach James Franklin knows how these things go. "I think we're going to have to be patient. I mean, could this game turn out to be game where there is multiple touchdowns scored on both sides and it comes down to a one-possession game and more of a shootout?" "Yes," Franklin said rhetorically. "Is it more likely to come down to a low-scoring game and a battle and a one-possession game and four-minute, two-minute type situations at the end? Probably most likely." Franklin implored fans as much as his staff to embrace the game style and not get impatient for big plays or points when they're not there. "So, for us, we got to make sure that we don't lose patience. There will be times where punting may be the best option. We just got to manage this game, and when the opportunities present themselves, we got to take advantage of it. I think patience is going to be critical." #PennState #NittanyLions JOIN Blue White Illustrated: https://www.on3.com/teams/penn-state-nittany-lions/join/?plan=annual SUBSCRIBE to Blue White Illustrated on YouTube and enable alerts - new highlights and videos uploaded regularly: https://www.youtube.com/c/bluewhiteillustratedvideo?sub_confirmation Bookmark our homepage: https://www.on3.com/teams/penn-state-nittany-lions/ Subscribe to BWI Magazine and Newsletters: https://bluewhiteonline.com Download our podcasts: https://cms.megaphone.fm/channel/LRL3155877513?selected=DSVV2664982394 Like us on Facebook https://www.facebook.com/BlueWhiteIllustrated/ Follow us on Twitter https://twitter.com/PennStateOn3 Sound effects obtained from https://www.zapsplat.com Learn more about your ad choices. Then, after the game's conclusion, join the BWI Live Postgame Show as we break down the what and why of the game. Penn State vs Michigan, five things Today's show is based off of the offensive and defensive scouting articles from earlier this week at Blue White Illustrated. We'll pull critical information about how Michigan likes to operate and how Penn State can attack those processes on either side of the ball. Here's an excerpt from that premium content. The threat of the running game and Michigan's mystique as a run-first team have opened up some explosive options in the passing game. Most of the Michigan offense is vertical-based. MCcarthy's arm strength and velocity on the ball come in handy in this over-the-top passing scheme. His average depth of target is 10.6 yards downfield, which is third in the Big Ten. While McCarthy isn't chucking the ball deep as much as other quarterbacks, he's shockingly far ahead in completion percentage. If you want to check out the complete article, click here. Lions offensive line presents a new challenge for Michigan The Penn State offensive line will be one of Michigan's best this year. While the run-blocking grade doesn't consider the scheme, situation, or any other context, it's a broad gauge to show that this is the best offensive line that Michigan has faced this year. It's also true to point out that Michigan has seen 224 run snaps in 2023. That's the third-fewest among Big Ten teams. Join the BWI Live Show today at 10 a.m. on YouTube! Subscribe to BWI on YouTube so you never miss any live content! Penn State vs. Indiana Preview With the Nittany Lion's struggles on offense last week, we'll focus mainly on the offense and how things can improve on that side of the ball. The defense allowed only 20 points to one of the most dangerous teams in the country, so we'll discuss them, but the spotlight will be on Drew Allar and his teammates. Most importantly, can Penn State regain their identity? Head coach James Franklin thinks they got away from it last week. "Yeah, I think we talked about staying true to our identity, and I thought we got a little bit away from that at times." "Somebody asked me earlier about our goal line package that we've been using, the three running backs and things like that that have been very successful in short yardage. We kind of got away from that." While Franklin acknowledged that the team's identity is grounded in the run game, his main point was that they are an efficient team. "I thought our identity was staying on schedule converting on third downs and then either converting on third downs or going for it on fourth down situations. I feel like that had been our identity for the season," Franklin said "We have a lot of respect for their short-yardage defense and how they were defending it, but we did not do that. We did not either convert on third downs like we had been doing or put us in a situation where we were in fourth and short to go for it." Penn State has a chance to redeem itself in the final month of the season, playing Maryland and Michigan after this home date with Indiana. #PennState #NittanyLions JOIN Blue White Illustrated: https://www.on3.com/teams/penn-state-nittany-lions/join/?plan=annual SUBSCRIBE to Blue White Illustrated on YouTube and enable alerts - new highlights and videos uploaded regularly: https://www.youtube.com/c/bluewhiteillustratedvideo?sub_confirmation Bookmark our homepage: https://www.on3.com/teams/penn-state-nittany-lions/ Subscribe to BWI Magazine and Newsletters: https://bluewhiteonline.com Download our podcasts: https://cms.megaphone.fm/channel/LRL3155877513?selected=DSVV2664982394 Like us on Facebook https://www.facebook.com/BlueWhiteIllustrated/ Follow us on Twitter https://twitter.com/PennStateOn3 Sound effects obtained from https://www.zapsplat.com Learn more about your ad choices. We're previewing the game today on the Penn State Football Tailgate Show, starting at 12:30. The show airs live, outside of the Bryce Jordan Center across the street from Beaver Stadium. Former Penn State defensive tackle Aeneas Hawkins gives you his thoughts on the upcoming game and the state of the Nittany Lions as they head into the pivotal second half of the season. Join us on the stream or listen locally on 99.5 The Bus. Penn State impressed with UMass Penn State head coach James Franklin discussed the UMass football team to begin the week and praised the Independent club for their innovation and production on offense. “Their offensive coordinator, we've been impressed with, Steve Casula. Steve is doing a really nice job for them. We've been impressed with them on offense. They're an 11-person, no-huddle spread, heavy, heavy RPO team. Maybe the most explosive team we've played this year. If you look at them statistically, they're No. 2 in major college football for plays of 50 yards or more. They're ranked No. 2 in the country. Plays of 10 yards or more, they're ranked ninth in the country, so this is an explosive team,” Franklin said It's also the first game that Penn State should have number two wide receiver Harrison Trey Wallace back in the lineup in a meaningful way. Wallace appeared in the game against Iowa but wasn't targeted and then missed the game against Northwestern the following week before the bye. During the show, Hawkins highlights the receivers in his Key Matchups segment to break down how Wallace's return affects the offense. 1-0, but with an eye on the future One of the key elements of the final non-conference game is health. Wallace is back, but the team lost guard JB Nelson during the last contest with Northwestern. Franklin wouldn't comment on his stats, per his usual policy with injuries, but he did acknowledge that the team is, overall, in a good spot. “Nothing has changed with J.B. in terms of how we normally discuss injuries and things like that. Nothing has changed there. In terms of health, I think we're in a pretty good place from the things that we talked about in terms of the number of reps our guys have had in games the number of guys we're playing. I think we're in a pretty good place from that perspective. I mean, obviously, you'd always love to be totally healthy, and we're not that, but I think we're in a pretty good place,” Franklin said. With the team's showdown against Ohio State looming next week, getting out of this game healthy is a critical part of today's contest. We'll discuss the Penn State offense, defense, and give predictions for the game on today's show. Join us starting at 12:30! Even the weather is getting in the spirits for this Big Ten clash, with rain and chilly conditions forecast for the game. But what's going to play out on the field this evening? Join the Penn State Football Tailgate Show, presented in conjunction with Seven Mountains Media, starting at 4:30 outside the Bryce Jordan Center, across the road from Beaver Stadium. Former Penn State defensive tackle Aeneas Hawkins joins the show to discuss the game and give his insights into the matchup between Penn State and Iowa. Catch the show on the Blue White Illustrated YouTube Channel or locally on 99.5 The Bus in State College. On today's show, we'll discuss Penn State's offensive plan and how they should attack Iowa and how the defense can counter the Hawkeyes ground attack. Penn State vs Iowa has deep roots. As Penn State head coach James Franklin noted earlier, there's a history between his team and Iowa over the years. "First of all, it's almost like opening on the road in the Big Ten. We played Iowa more than anybody. Maybe you could make the argument part of maybe the best team in the west over our team here at Penn State. You could make that argument." But despite Kirk Ferentz's long-standing tenure at Iowa, Franklin is quickly climbing the rankings of veteran Big Ten coaches in his tenth season at Penn State. Consistency like this could breed a great game or complacency. Franklin says that evolving is necessary, but not at the cost of your identity. "I think that really starts with two things, and that's hiring and recruiting, making sure that you're hiring the right people in the building and recruiting the right people into the locker room, and that you're transparent with them on what they're signing up for," Franklin said earlier this week. "Then saying, Okay, they have to understand how to blend within the culture and align kind of with the identity, but then also allow a Manny Diaz to be Manny Diaz and play to his strengths and allow his strengths and experiences to add value to our overall organization, be able to have Drew [Allar] that we talked about, bring him into our organization. Like we talked about maybe a week or two ago, not put restrictions on Drew that it limits his development and his ability to be a unique player." Both Diaz and Allar will be central figures in today's show. Join us live and in person or on the Blue White Illustrated YouTube Channel in the live stream! Former Penn State defensive tackle Aeneas Hawkins joins us to break down the game and give his thoughts on the upcoming matchup. Five Things to Watch: Penn State vs. Iowa Once again, Penn State faces Iowa in a pivotal game early in the season. Head coach James Franklin has gotten used to it over the years. "First of all, it's almost like opening on the road in the Big Ten. We played Iowa more than anybody. Maybe you could make the argument part of maybe the best team in the west over our team here at Penn State. You could make that argument. Again, we love that. We're appreciative of the Big Ten for that. I know it's random - random." Like many other Iowa teams, this group will represent a challenge in the running game. The team is strong up the middle with stout defensive tackles and physical linebackers. Is this another opportunity for the Penn State offensive line to prove themselves? Or is it another chance for the offensive scheme to pivot? We'll examine this topic from both angles and try to determine how Penn State will play with its ground game. On the flip side, is this the same old Iowa team? The Hawkeyes have struggled to score points and run the ball up the middle. We'll examine the opponent's success running in the A and B gaps and give film-level clues as to why. Next, we'll spotlight Drew Allar and the Penn State passing attack. How will the Nittany Lion's first-year starter handle the disciplined and tenacious coverage unit for Iowa in the White Out? We'll discuss the keys to keeping him upright. Biggest threat for Iowa out for the season Tight end Luke Lachey's injury couldn't have come at a worse time for Iowa. We'll explain how important he was to the Iowa passing attack. Can the Hawkeyes pivot in one week? Finally, we'll get to the number-one wrinkle in the game that we find the most interesting. How will Allar fare against one specific coverage? We'll discuss those topics and your thoughts today on the BWI Live Show at 10 a.m.! Hour 2 - The 2024 USA Wrestling Olympic Trials coming to Bryce Jordan Center next year, and its our mock headlines of the week with the king.
Penn State basketball raced out to a 19-point lead against Rutgers on Sunday night in a pivotal game to keep its NCAA tournament hopes alive. Despite that, the team suffered an epic collapse, failing to register a field goal in the game's final nine minutes. That epic power outage led to a 59-56 loss at home in front of a White Out crowd at the Bryce Jordan Center. Now, with two games left on the schedule, the season is on the brink for the Nittany Lions, who face must-win games for the rest of the regular season and beyond. Today on the BWI Penn State Hoops show, basketball insider Nate Bauer and host Thomas Frank Carr discuss the game and how Penn State can quickly pick up the pieces after the loss. They'll be live at noon on YouTube to take your thoughts and feelings about the team's latest loss and the road ahead. While T-Frank will focus on the game's final nine minutes, Bauer wants to point to the seeds sewn in the first half that ultimately became the issue late. They'll discuss the undercurrent of Penn State's big lead, a strong performance by Cam Wynter, and the shooting struggles for the Nittany Lions...at home? For his part, Penn State head coach Micah Shrewsberry thinks that his team stopped doing the little things with such a large lead, and it became a ball game thanks to a lack of focus. "We came out and started the half great. But then we let our foot off the gas; we let go of the rope, and we didn't do the things that got us that lead. Little plays that don't seem that they were big, but we give them a bucket, and then they get a free throw rebound. We gave them more chances," he said after the game. "Maybe you foul, and they shoot a free throw and miss it, and that helps close the door. We left the door open too many times. Even when we weren't scoring the basketball, we couldn't come up with timely stops; they would get long offensive rebounds. They hit every timely basket that they needed to make, and we missed a lot of them. But it was because of the things that we did early in the game." Check out the show at noon to hear more from the head coach who blamed himself for the loss in the postgame press conference. You'll hear comments from Sunday night, and his availability on Monday to help narrate the show. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
Penn State basketball came into its game against Illinois at the Bryce Jordan Center with both an opportunity and a need. They needed to stop a four-game losing streak if they wanted any hope of making the NCAA Tournament. Illinois also represented the opportunity to gain a quad-one win over a quality team to boost its resume. They delivered in a big way, winning 93-81. Today on the Blue White Illustrated Penn State Hoops Show, host Thomas Frank Carr and reporter Nate Bauer discuss Jalen Pickett's historic night and how the team around him helped get a decisive win. As always, check out the show on YouTube and subscribe to Blue White Illustrated, so you don't miss the Hoops Show. If you're a fan of the BWI Daily, submit a five-star review, and you can get your question answered on the weekly mailbag show. Penn State loosens up and goes off Penn State head coach Micah Shrewsberry, discussed how he felt he'd led his team down the wrong path, making them too tight to perform well over the last several weeks. "When we came back Sunday after that game, you can see like an air of confidence. We had a good day of practice. And we came back yesterday and we had another good day of practice. And then when I walked down for shoot around today and then throughout our shoot around, our spirit was great. Spirit was great. They weren't broken. They were together. They were ready to fight. They were ready to fight together. And I think that's the biggest thing is they didn't let anything affect them. That's a sign of maturity. That's a sign of a group that's together. I'm proud of those guys. They're winning despite their coach," Shrewsberry said. Bauer and T-Frank discuss how that situation is a balancing act that will continue this season. But it helps when a player goes for 40 points in a game. Jalen Pickett had a historic night on Tuesday, becoming the first player to reach 40 points in over 60 years. "That's special. Sometimes when you're going through it, you just need somebody special to have a special performance. I think that's what he did. But not to downplay what some of the other guys did. Maybe they didn't score as much, maybe they didn't rebound as much, but I thought their effort and some of the contributions we got from everybody was special," Shrewsberry said after the gam. Finally, T-Frank and Bauer will discuss the team's defensive performance, which still wasn't steller in the win. Previously, Penn State has struggled to defend when they don't shoot well. Was there any improvement in that last night? "I feel like steps were made in spurts. When our offense is going, we really play good defense. We want to get more stops and get on offense. But when teams are scoring, we get maybe a little bit overwhelmed. We want to play a perfect possession every time. So I think our mental needs to be a little bit stronger for us to keep going. But we got time to fix that," Pickett said after the game. Check out the full show to hear more about the team's upcoming schedule and how Penn State still has a chance to make an NCAA Tournament run in the remaining regular season games. Penn State football is a darling dark horse for the upcoming 2023 season. With a five-star quarterback presumably stepping under center to start his career, to go with a loaded defense and running game, there's plenty of excitement about Penn State locally and nationally. But what about that center Drew Allar will line up behind? One of the key losses for the team this offseason was former starter Juice Scruggs, who moved on to the NFL. Can Cornell transfer Hunter Nourzad fill in for Scruggs? It's a critical position and one that Pickel spent time examining this week. He and T-Frank will discuss the situation and the internal view of Nourzad. Then the duo will discuss the external view of the second-year Nittany Lion to see how fans view the 6-3 lineman. Next, they'll preview the spring transfer portal window. Penn State has unfinished business after missing out on a defensive tackle in this past cycle. Can they make something happen in May? They'll discuss that, and review the team's work in the transfer portal this winter. Finally, they'll dive into Penn State's top-ranked showdown with Iowa on Friday night. The Nittany Lions steamrolled Michigan and Michigan State this past weekend, setting up a one-versus-two showdown at the BJC. Can the Nittany Lions get the win? What are the key weight classes that will decide the dual? They'll dive into that, head coach Cael Sanderson's handling of the 157-pound spot on his lineup, and much more. After an eventful week for Indiana Basketball that included two close defeats to Iowa and Northwestern and a loss of a key player, AJ Guyton and Austin Platt talk all about the Hoosiers' struggles so far in conference play. First, the guys look back at the emotionally charged loss to Iowa on the road: The fast start, troubles against the zone, the key injury to Race Thompson, the inability to (again) guard Kris Murray and co., and the drama near the end of the game which saw Fran McCaffery cross the half-court line. Then, the two recap the Northwestern loss at home, the lack of energy to start the game, the problems guarding the perimeter in the sluggish first half, the multitude of turnovers that led to easy Wildcat points, and the star-studded play of TJD and JHS to keep Indiana afloat. One of the reasons that Lily Pevoto wanted to attend Penn State University was that she was so impressed with their Dance Marathon known as THON. This event is the largest student run philanthropy in the world. Now approaching its 50th year, this fundraiser has 700 dancers who take to the floor at the Bryce Jordan Center in State College and dance for 46 straight hours. More than 16,000 student volunteers make certain that this event runs as smoothly as possible. Lily is the Executive Director for the upcoming THON to be held in February of 2023, and will talk about this fundraiser which has raised over 200 million dollars for the cause of Pediatric Cancer.
The month of March starts tomorrow, which means things open back up for Penn State football shortly. The BWI Live crew of Nate Bauer, Dave Eckert, and Thomas Frank Carr prepare you for spring practice with an in-depth look at the Nittany Lions' roster. However, they start with the highlights of the Class of 2022, Penn State's five-star players. Bauer went through the last ten years of recruiting information to determine how the top quarterbacks, running backs, and defensive ends have performed in their first year. So he shares his findings with the group and extrapolates that to quarterback Drew Allar, running back Nick Singleton, and defensive end Dani Dennis-Sutton. Two of those players, Allar and Singleton, are early enrollees at Penn State who are already a part of winter conditioning and will participate in spring practice. So next, the trio gets into their projections and expectations for the spring. To start, each panelist gives a player who wants to see at each position and why. Over the next two weeks, they'll take a look at the entire roster, but they'll start with the offense this week. Next, they'll ask for your questions and then have their weekly prediction competition. This week's topic will be standout players from spring practice. Which Nittany Lion will get the most publicity from his coaches and teammates? Each panelist will give their prediction, and fans will vote on their favorite argument and player. T-Frank will count up the votes and announce a winner at the show's end. Finally, they discuss Penn State basketball's lopsided loss to Nebraska last night at the Bryce Jordan Center. It was a rough senior night, losing 93-70 to the 8-21 Cornhuskers. What went wrong? Penn State has now dropped two of three after needing to win out for postseason hopes. The group will discuss the last game and the season to finish the show. JOIN Blue White Illustrated: https://www.on3.com/teams/penn-state-... Nebraska built a 13-point lead with 7:35 left but Penn State erupted on a 15-0 run in just 1:21 to take the lead and escape with an 83-76 victory over the Huskers at the Bryce Jordan Center on Thursday night.
After notching the third win over a top-five AP team in school history with a 17-point victory over No. 5 Indiana on Monday night in Lincoln, Nebraska hunts for its second straight road win when the Big Red takes on Penn State Thursday. Tip-off between the Huskers (19-6, 8-6 Big Ten) and the Lady Lions (9-15, 3-11 Big Ten) is set for 6 p.m. (CT) as part of a men's and women's basketball doubleheader at the Bryce Jordan Center in University Park as the men's team plays host to Minnesota with a 3 p.m. (CT) tip-off.
This offseason, there might not be a bigger topic for Penn State football fans than the offensive line. Yes, quarterback always dominates the discussion but with sixth-year player Sean Clifford coming back to start another season, his protection is paramount. After a run of offensive line commits over the past two weeks, has Penn State gotten to the point that they will be markedly better in 2022? Host Thomas Frank Carr and reporter Dave Eckert debate that topic on the BWI Daily Edition. Dave takes the side of optimism on the show and gives his reasoning for Penn State taking a step forward next season up front. He sees the situation improving for several key factors that he lists out in his allotted time. Next, T-Frank, debating on the side of things not getting better, gives his argument. He points to one recurring issue that Penn State had heading into 2021 that they will have again in 2022. What is it? He details that problem and then explains why despite a surge in new players, not all of the pieces fit this offseason perfectly. After they wrap up their arguments, Dave and T-Frank have a chance to respond to the other's presentation with closing thoughts. Then, finally, they wrap up with a general discussion about the offensive line and where some of the issues, positive and negative, might go this year. From there, they discuss Penn State basketball's low-scoring loss to Michigan at the Bryce Jordan Center on Tuesday night. Dave explains how once again, the Nittany Lions put together a great effort but failed to come away with enough offense to win the game. What are the factors that led to this week's loss? How did Greg Lee's absence affect John Harrah? Eckert gets into those details, while T-Frank asks if there's a common theme in losing quality leads in games they need to win. Finally, Dave gives his thoughts before they wrap up, looking ahead to the next game. This week, Penn State football made some off-field additions to their coaching staff, with a former Nittany Lion legend headlining the group. This week, the all-time leading tackler in Penn State history, Dan Connor, joined the program as an off-field analyst. Former Temple running backs coach Gabe Infante and Manny Diaz assistant at Miami, Rick Lyster round out head coach James Franklin's latest acquisition of support staff this year. That's where host Thomas Frank Carr and Senior Editor for Blue White Illustrated, Nate Bauer start. They examine each hire, starting with Connor. The emotional tie to the university is real, and Bauer thinks that Connor is an excellent fit after beginning his coaching career in high school in this current role. So what will he, Infante, and Lyster be doing? T-Frank lays out some of the essential functions that Penn State needs from their analysts and illuminates how they can add value in multiple ways outside of just x's and o's. From there, they discuss Penn State's other job openings. The university posted a job for an analytics director this week, so T-Frank and Nate discuss the merits of the position and how valuable an in-house data scientist can be. That conversation morphs into one about scheme, talent, and football tactics. T-Frank looks at the Penn State offense through the prism of analytics and explains football reasons why simply following the numbers doesn't work and why only relying on football information can leave you blind. Did Mike Yurcich want to run a specific type of scheme last season? Is that a helpful plan? Did he use it as much as he has in the past? T-Frank takes you through his evaluation of the Penn State offense this season and what you can find when looking at the data and applying football logic. Next, he asks Nate the question, "What did you learn about football this year?" They discuss what lessons they picked up from their football viewing in 2021, and their answers might surprise you. Finally, they wrap up discussing Penn State basketball, which takes on Michigan Tuesday night at the Bryce Jordan Center. In their return to the Bryce Jordan Center last night, Penn State basketball got a massive win with a 90-86 victory over Iowa. Reporter Dave Eckert joins the BWI Daily Edition to give his thoughts on the game. Host Thomas Frank Carr starts Eckert at the end of the game where Iowa, down for most of the game, forced overtime. How unusual was the play that extended the contest to two overtimes? Eckert details what happened in the final minutes of a game that Penn State controlled for most of the evening. After that, they discuss the overtime period and how the game-tying tip-in from Keegan Murray affected Penn State in the extra minutes. Finally, Eckert details the key players in overtime and how head coach Micah Shrewsberry navigated had his team respond. From there, they work back to regulation and discuss just how rare the performance from big men John Harrar and Greg Lee was. Both were outstanding on the night to a level that, according to Eckert, Penn State hasn't seen in quite some time. However, they had to do the bulk of the work to get Penn State in position to close the game out in the final minutes becuase one key element was missing from the Nittany Lions attack. Eckert details what that was and how it led to a slum in the middle minutes of the game. After wrapping up their discussion about last night, they move on to Penn State's upcoming game against Wisconsin this weekend. Eckert previews what waits ahead of the Nittany Lions in Madison and how the game might unfold. From there, they move on to discuss Penn State Hockey. The team has struggled this season, and Eckert gives his thoughts about what has been going on for head coach Guy Gadowski's squad. Why has the team played better as of late? Why hasn't it translated into wins? Finally, they break that down and forecast the team's postseason chances. Lastly, they discuss the Senior Bowl. In Mobile, practice started earlier this week for several former Penn State players who hope to improve their stock in the 2022 NFL Draft. T-Frank and Eckert discuss Jesse Luketa's change in weight, Arnold Ebiketie's insane measurements, and Jahan Dotson's absence from the event. #PennState #NittanyLions JOIN Blue White Illustrated: https://www.on3.com/teams/penn-state-nittany-lions/join/?plan=annual SUBSCRIBE to Blue White Illustrated on YouTube and enable alerts - new highlights and videos uploaded regularly: https://www.youtube.com/c/bluewhiteillustratedvideo?sub_confirmation Bookmark our homepage: https://www.on3.com/teams/penn-state-nittany-lions/ Subscribe to BWI Magazine and Newsletters: http://bluewhiteonline.com Download our podcasts: https://bluewhiteillustrated.podbean.com/ Like us on Facebook https://www.facebook.com/BlueWhiteIllustrated/ Follow us on Twitter https://twitter.com/PennStateOn3 Sound effects obtained from https://www.zapsplat.com Learn more about your ad choices. It's senior day on Saturday at Beaver Stadium for the Penn State football team. Typically this has been a time to celebrate outgoing classes and reflect on their accomplishments as they head on to the next chapter of their lives. But, is that the case anymore? On the BWI Daily Edition, host Thomas Frank Carr looks at the senior class and precisely two members in it as to whether or not they should return for their extra year of eligibility. First, senior tackle PJ Mustipher exited in early October with a season-ending injury. Should he come back for one more season to put tape on film for NFL scouts? T-Frank weighs the pros and cons of Mustipher's upcoming decision. T-Frank spends the bulk of the first segment considering the future of signal-caller Sean Clifford. The fifth-year senior could come back for a future season, but does that do him any good for his NFL future? On the flip side, does Penn State want him back? Finally, would it be good for the team and fans to have Clifford under center in 2022? T-Frank looks at some key factors that would determine Clifford's success based on his performance this season and some stark contrasts in critical metrics. He also plays some comments from James Franklin about players that will directly impact that situation in the future. Next, T-Frank checks in with basketball reporter Dave Eckert about the Penn State Hoops team and their upset loss on the road to UMass Monday night. He gets the scoop on what happened, why Penn State struggled, and what it means for the team going forward. They also discuss the program as a whole under first-year coach Micah Shrewsberry and what casual fans need to know as the season ramps up at the Bryce Jordan Center. Heading to State College, Pennsylvania, today's episode introduces Kate Bean, Bryce Jordan Center's Director of Marketing and Public Relations. Kate comes from a somewhat unique perspective, working at a venue that resides on a college campus, and debunks many of the stereotypes that come with that. She also describes the experience of having to pivot a monumental 25th anniversary in the middle of a pandemic, how they have developed unique partnerships to promote shows, being a part of EAMC's DEI Committee, and what it was like shifting careers to live events. From the once “singing horse girl” to horse-riding venue marketing expert, Kate has experienced it all and shares her unique adventure with us.Kate Bean: Facebook | Instagram | LinkedInBryce Jordan Center: Facebook | Twitter | Instagram
This coming week, we’ll finally have the U.S. Olympic Team Trials for what will be the 2021 Olympic Games in Tokyo. Originally scheduled for Penn State’s Bryce Jordan Center, Dickies Arena in Fort Worth, Texas is now the host city. Texas last hosted the Trials in 2000 to then-record crowds. The pandemic will limit attendance, but we’ll still have three styles of wrestling looking to crown champions who will earn the right to represent the United States. On this episode of the Short Time Wrestling Podcast, I’ll look back at the previous six Olympic Trials I’ve worked - four in the U.S. and two in Canada - and talk about some of the memorable moments from them. It starts in 2004 in Indianapolis, then on to Las Vegas in 2008, then Iowa City in 2012 and 2016 and then north of the border in suburban Edmonton in 2015 and Niagara Falls in 2019. Those dates don’t line up? I’ll explain some on-the-mat and off-the-mat schedules that make things unique in the U.S. and in Canada.
