In our last episode of season 20, we chat with Scott who shares his spine-chilling encounter with a Yowie in Moorpark Beach, near Bundaberg, Queensland, in September 2022. Initially moving to escape city life, Scott's routine fishing trip turned into a night of terror when he encountered what he initially mistook for a bear, an absurd thought in Australia, at dawn. This creature, walking on all fours before standing upright at over three meters tall, exhibited both bear and orangutan-like features but with a human-like gaze.This silent, menacing figure, after making direct eye contact with Scott and emitting a blood-curdling screech, darted away with incredible speed and grace. Scott details his subsequent obsession with understanding what he saw, touching on the regional folklore around Yowies or Bunyips, as well as his isolation and determination to find others with similar experiences. When I was growing up , I'd heard the legends of what dangers lurked in the bush , waiting to kill unsuspecting humans. Dropbears , Yowies , Bunyips and Hoopsnakes . Most people think they are made up , however I am here to tell you Hoopsnakes are very real. Just maybe not as deadly as legend would have it. (On a side note - I'm wondering who decided that Australian wildlife wasn't scary enough that they had to make up a few more deadly creatures to scare the general public ? Like hello, man eating crocodiles aren't enough ?) In the late 2000’s Box Hill Institute staff were converting their cassettes to CD when they stumbled across a strange cassette along with a Polaroid. All that was written in the inside cover was; ‘Saltman – Lessons in Suburban Life & Death’. Staff were intrigued to find out that ‘Saltman’ was never registered as a teacher and none of his students can be traced. The only reference on the recording is to an ex teacher, Chris Gafney who retired in 1999. Chris was contacted and only recalls sighting a tall blonde man loitering on the top floor of the Whitehorse road campus late at night talking to 3-4 Indonesian students, assuming he was either a cleaner or cheap security guard. All that’s left are these bizarre recordings, a man who is clearly living on the edge of the night and is heading towards insanity. His lessons are not only disturbing but enthralling and historical, giving us a glimpse into a lost world of the eastern suburbs.
