Some farmers are shearing back the costs with new sheep breeds. Meant for meat production, ‘Nudies' are a breed of sheep that don't grow wool, allowing farmers to cut costs as there's no need for shearing, dagging, or crutching. Pierre Syben from Wairere Rams in Masterton told Kerre Woodham in his view, the industry will likely split between the people who stick with wool and those who move towards the Nudies. He says that hopefully as more people go into non-sheering sheep, it will lift the price of wool as at the moment, it's a loss-making venture. The Government has announced the reversal of speed limit reductions on a large number of New Zealand roads, including many in the northern regions of the country. The move will result in speed limits being increased on 38 sections of key routes, including parts of State Highway 1 in Northland, SH16 near Auckland and SH3 in Hamilton. Also on the list are changes to SH2 between Featherston and Masterton, and SH3 Whanganui. Making the announcement in Wairarapa, where the speed limit increase will save drivers around three minutes on their journey, Transport Minister Chris Bishop said: “It all adds up - that is productivity and growth.” Viastrada Certified Safe System Assessor and Level Crossing Safety Impact Assessor Glenn Koorey says the move goes against evidence that lower speeds make for safer roads, but there are some areas where putting the limit up can be justified. On this day 60 years ago, 4 young lads from Liverpool arrived in Wellington on a plane to commence a week long tour of New Zealand. And they changed everything. It was the Beatles. It wasn't like we weren't warned. The week before was chaos as they toured Australia. 250,000 youngsters welcomed the band in sleepy old Adelaide. But the older generation were not prepared for the excitement, the hysteria and disorder that followed the band wherever they went. They were agog. It was the beginning of the generation gap. It was the beginning of the rise of youth culture. The Beatles opened New Zealand's eyes. The advent of international travel and of television meant they were the world's first international superstars and they were here. Andrew Dickens chats with listeners who remember the day and the week. The adventures are legendary. Most were extraordinarily young and yet the time is burnt into their memory. Take a trip. Kiwis are waking to freezing temperatures this morning and the threat of rolling power outages due to a nationwide grid emergency on the coldest day of the year. Christchurch, Twizel and Mt Cook Airport were the coldest spots in the country this morning, dropping to a bone-chilling -6.4C around 5.30am, according to MetService. Alexandra wasn't far behind at -5C, while Taumarunui was the coldest town in the North Island at -4.6C. Palmerston North was at -3C, Masterton at -2C, Levin, Taupo and Paraparaumu were all around -1.5C and Hamilton was at -1C. Auckland got down to 4.1C this morning, but chilly winds in the city meant it felt like 2C, according to MetService. But despite the icy temperatures, households have been told to conserve electricity and not use their heaters as much to prevent overloading the country's power grid as energy demand outstrips supply. The country's grid operator Transpower issued a warning notice in advance, saying it did not have enough generation offers to meet demand between 7am and 9am Friday. People have been asked not to use heaters or lights in rooms they were not using, not to charge electronic devices and vehicles and to delay using washing machines, clothes dryers and dishwashers. The Minister of Energy has also urged New Zealanders to conserve electricity this morning. Meanwhile, Government minister and Act Party leader David Seymour has called the potential cuts “Third World stuff”. Simeon Brown spoke with Mike Hosking on Newstalk ZB about the energy sector's request to save power this morning. “I knew it would be challenging and I knew it would be tight... but the reality is the outcome of six years of not sending the right messages to our electricity sector, to make sure we have the generation we need,” Brown said. “I think people are waking up this morning and they are aware that it is tight, and I'm very grateful that New Zealanders are heeding the message this morning.” He added: “It's what happens when you say by 2030 we're going to be 100 per cent renewable, which is completely impossible to meet. “It's what happens when you ban oil and gas exploration, which is what the last government did.” Brown blamed the energy warning on the previous Labour-led Government policies, which focused on moving to more renewable sources of electricity. “The industry said, this is having a chilling impact on investment.” Brown described the $16 billion Lake Onslow pumped hydro scheme as a “white elephant costing billions of dollars” and dumped it in December. Referring to the Paris Agreement, to keep global warming to no more than 1.5°C by reducing emissions by 45 per cent by 2030 and reaching net zero by 2050, Brown said: “Labour New Zealand is all about the bumper sticker and the slogan, which all sounds lovely and gives you warm fuzzies when you're in Paris, but it doesn't keep the lights on in New Zealand.” LISTEN ABOVE See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

A little bit of good news- The Government is restoring democracy to councils around the issue of Māori wards. The Government's made the announcement this afternoon that the rules are going back to the way they were. If a council wants to set up a Māori ward, ratepayers will again have the option to petition and force a referendum and potentially, if they want to, overturn that plan altogether. And also, all the councils who did set up Māori wards under the Labour Government in the last three years will either have to remove those Māori wards or hold a referendum next year. By my count, that's about 45 councils that are going to have to do that. This includes Hamilton Thames-Coromandel, Tauranga, South Taranaki, Stratford, Napier, Wellington City, Nelson, Masterton- the list goes on. Now, why I'm pleased about this is that it actually looked like this wasn't going to happen. It was in the coalition agreements last year, but then last week there was a leak that Cabinet had decided to put this on the backburner. Now either that leak was wrong, or the leak created drama- and the Government decided it was better to go ahead with it. The second reason I'm pleased about this is because ratepayers should call the shots on what happens on their councils- don't you think? The only reason those 45 councils were able to set up those Māori wards in the last 3 years is because Labour stopped ratepayers from having that ability to petition and force a referendum. Willie Jackson and Nanaia Mahuta (who was the minister at the time) weren't even ashamed of the fact that they were removing a democratic trigger. They knew that's what they were doing, they said that they disagreed essentially with the principle of majority rules. Now, this is not to say that the ratepayers of all 45 councils will necessarily veto the Māori wards. In some areas, the ratepayers might love it. More power to them. It's not an idea I think has any merit, but as I say, that's the call for the ratepayers of that region. Already though, the shrill stuff has started. Waatea News is reporting that the Government is bringing 'back the white veto on Māori wards'. So expect that that's the tone that's coming on this. But really, what this is actually about is ratepayers telling councils what to do, not the other way around. And that's exactly how it should be. Listen to my chat with Dr. Rebecca Masterton as we explore her journey of finding spiritual meaning in secular British society. Rebecca talks honestly about feeling out of place in a society where deep spirituality isn't often a priority. She shares her story of how finding Islam brought her peace and a sense of fitting in.In our conversation, Rebecca also gets real about balancing intuition with rationality and the dangers of blindly following spiritual teachers. From being a normal British teenager with a thirst for knowledge, to following a Hindu guru as a college student, later joining a Sufi order, and finally finding her path within Shi'ism, Rebecca's journey reveals her curiosity about the world and deep longing for connecting to the Divine.Influenced by her deep understanding of Shi'i theology, she highlights why it's key to balancing our inner feelings with smart thinking – this isn't just about believing; it's about understanding ourselves and the choices we make in our lives. Mark Fitzpatrick came to the Islanders as a highly-touted goalie prospect and quicky established himself as a fiery NHL-caliber netminder. But right before the 1990-91 season, the 21-year-old found himself in a Los Angeles hospital with swollen hands and arms, and feet the size of footballs. Even when doctors were able to name his ailment as a rare blood disease called eosinophilia-myalgia syndrome or EMS, Fitzpatrick's frightening and frustrating ordeal to reclaim his playing career was just beginning. After treatments and stops and starts on the ice, Fitzpatrick was able to play 30 games for an Islanders team with slim playoff hopes in 1992. He became the Islanders' second ever recipient of the Masterton Trophy for dedication to hockey, but more importantly, became a beacon of hope to others suffering from EMS all across the world. While Fitzpatrick was battling for his life and career, the Islanders of this time were an absolute trainwreck. Their scorers couldn't score, their defense wasn't consistent, their owner was an absentee cheapskate and their best player and only star wanted to be traded. Other than that, everything was great! It was all a far cry from where the team had been a decade earlier and a small taste of where things would go. And, yes, the use of Georges Bizet's “Habanera” aria as background music at times is an homage to Michael Richie's 1976 classic The Bad News Bears and a way to lighten the mood a little. Hearing it still makes me chuckle and picture a field of foul-mouthed kids who can't play baseball. That seems like an apt comparison to the early 1990's Islanders. NZTA has finished building physical safety improvements between Masterton and Carterton. There's a new wire median barrier and three roundabouts. Flynn says locals have been campaigning for the roundabouts to be built for decades. There's still some debate on what the speed limit should be. And Kiwirail is upgrading all 30 railway level crossings in Wairarapa, in advance of new faster trains coming to the region. Also the GP shortage in Wairarapa means that all three medical centres in Masterton are not taking any new patients. Flynn Nicholls is a reporter at the Wairarapa Times-Age
