“The idea of analytic neutrality, which was more or less a cliche truth when I was training back in the 1980s, is clearly getting at something very important, which is that we mustn't try to pre-conceive where the patient's development is going to take him or her. But that doesn't mean that the development is not in a direction. Aristotle famously said that the human being is a ‘zoon politikon', a creature who belongs in a somewhat structured society. Healthy development is in that sort of direction as we become more integrated, as our ‘ghosts become more like ancestors', to use that famous metaphor. We become more aware of the reality of other people and their real as opposed to their fantasy importance in the ecosystem of which we are all part. And this makes possible the sort of ethical realization that Levinas was talking about. We recognize the reality of the other. We discover that we are interconnected. We are part of something that is hugely greater than ourselves and that goes beyond our knowing. But of course, that doesn't mean that we are not also selfish and unique selves. It's that we are under pressure, so to speak, from both quarters.” Episode Description: We begin with David's description of Freud's view of religion as offering "compellingly attractive" illusions in the face of the helplessness we face by life's and death's unpredictability. Alternatively, David suggests that religions provide 'objects', ie Gods, that are importantly allegorical and offer an ‘ethical seriousness' over time. We discuss the ability of these allegories to offer possibilities of 'transcendence' in a world that he sees as often limited to the material. He presents Levinas' view of the responsibility we all have when encountering "the face of the other" - a responsibility that is not chosen but "slipped into my consciousness like a thief." We consider the ethical differences between one's superego and one's conscience. We close with David sharing with us the vicissitudes of his early life that, as for us all, form a context for our later interests. Our Guest: David Black studied philosophy and Eastern religions before training in London, first as a pastoral counsellor and later as a psychoanalyst. He is a Fellow of the British Psychoanalytical Society, now retired, who has written widely on psychoanalysis in relation to matters of ethics and religion. In 2006 he edited Psychoanalysis and Religion in the Twenty-first Century. He has published two collections of his own psychoanalytic papers, most recently Psychoanalysis and Ethics: the Necessity of Perspective. He is also a poet and translator, whose translation of Dante's Purgatorio was published in 2021 in the New York Review of Books Classics series. (It was later the winner of the annual American National Translation Award in Poetry.) Visit David Black's website at: https://www.dmblack.net. Recommended Readings: Black, D.M. Bubblegum-flavored doughnuts. HUGE car repair advice as Mom asks questions and Dad answers. Trippy won staff of the year, and Sammy almost got fired. David Black won the race car event. (sexual talk I shall not repeat) More good stuff kept me listening for the whole time!
Well, GXMoms out (super fight). The gear crashed, Mom hates our luggage, Vegas is coming, David Black likes to drive fast, and we can't stop air, smell, or sound. And a few other things tossed in. Last episode for season 3.
Information Morning Saint John from CBC Radio New Brunswick (Highlights)

Police1's "What Cops Want in 2024" survey focused on officer wellness and behavioral health. This year's findings reveal the profound impact of mental wellness struggles among law enforcement officers, with many reporting issues such as sleep disturbances, depression, anxiety and post-traumatic stress. The survey brings attention to the widespread effects of work-related stress, including alarming rates of suicidal thoughts and burnout. The results emphasize the pressing need for comprehensive wellness initiatives within police departments to help officers manage the emotional and psychological toll of their demanding roles. In this episode of Policing Matters, host Jim Dudley sits down with Dr. David Black, founder of Cordico and Lexipol's president of Wellness Solutions and a leading expert in law enforcement wellness and mental health, to discuss the findings from the "What Cops Want" survey. With nearly 3,000 officers responding, the survey sheds light on the pressing wellness issues impacting law enforcement personnel across the country. Dr. Black breaks down the pervasive challenges — such as sleep disturbances, trauma and suicidal thoughts — and provides actionable strategies for officers, agencies and communities to better support police wellness. This episode is primarily a bit of housekeeping, a bunch of stuff that should have been mentioned in the last episode, some end-of-year gaming and the announcement that I will be taking over the hosting of Movie Monday, a feature previously hosted by Jason Connerley over on Nerd's RPG Variety Cast. Movie Monday is a feature in which we choose a movie for listeners to watch each month and send in their thoughts. Those messages are then compiled and shared in an episode that goes out on the last Monday of each month. This month's movie is Terry Gilliam's Time Bandits (1981). Please see the various methods of contacting the show below. I respond to a message from Michael of Mirke the Meek before looking at another bunch of RPG books I picked up this year including Leo Hunt's Vaults of Vaarn Deluxe Edition, Kobayashi's Black Sword Hack - Ultimate Chaos Edition, Laurie O'Connel's Hieronymus: Garden of Earthly Delights Edition, and Brian Yaksha's Throne of Avarice for Best Left Buried.I round things off by talking about a couple of sessions of Castaway by Monolith Games and Stockholm Kartell's Mörk Borg. Honourable mentions: Goblin's Henchman, Cairn 2E by Yochai Gal, Between Two Cairns, Rich Fraser of Cockatrice Nuggets, The Weekly Scroll, A Boy and His Dog Dir. L.Q. Jones, David Black's The Black Hack, Free League's Dragonbane, Barney Dicker of Loco Ludus, and Scott Dorward.Music by Timothy J. Charles Ortleb is a journalist, novelist and filmmaker who gained notoriety as the publisher of the gay biweekly New York Native between 1980 and 1996. New York Native also published John Lauritsen's investigative reporting on the deadly effects of the AIDS drug AZT. Here are today's: There are big and important differences between interviewing to report a story, where you're using selected sound bites, and hosting an interview. Celeste was initially dismayed that her vast experience as a reporter hadn't prepared her to sit in that host chair. As a host of a conversation, you have to care about creating a story arc; about the order of your questions; and about the way in which you ask your questions. None of those apply universally to reporting. A lot of what we think is true about good communication doesn't prove to be true. Celeste says her research shows that tactics like making eye contact, saying uh-huh, nodding your head, and even repeating back what you heard – aren't effective. It's sharing perspectives that actually creates a connection, an empathic bond.Learning to communicate well with one another could not be more important – because to communicate well is to survive. One thing that Celeste told me that took my breath away is that it is not true that the human species survived because of some innate higher intelligence. Rather, she said, “The way that we survived is through our communities. If you're messing with one human being, you are almost always messing with more.” To talk with those with whom you disagree, learn their arguments. You need to understand them as well as you know your own. Otherwise, they will dismiss your objection as coming from someone who simply doesn't understand. ***Follow Elaine on LinkedInHelp us find and celebrate today's best hosts! The head of the water regulator, Ofwat, has insisted the watchdog is committed to holding water companies to account. David Black told this programme he would not hesitate to take enforcement action if providers failed to fix leaks. He added that some companies needed to 'up their game'. Water companies have faced mounting anger over failure to keep up with demand during the recent heatwave. David Black is a author of many works on LSD and its history in particular "Psychedelic Tricksters: A True Secret History of LSD", tells the story of various people, beginning with the discovery of LSD's hallucinogenic properties in 1943 by Albert Hoffman. In the late-1940s psychiatrists started using it as “psychosis-inducing drug” for schizophrenics. CIA officers investigated LSD's potential as a weapon of mind-control and became enthusiastic trippers themselves. But the CIA and the medical establishment wanted to keep LSD out of the hands of “undesirables.” The “undesirables” included those in the new youth counterculture who challenged the official line on LSD and explored its potential for creativity and spirituality. Black lives in London and is an independent journalist and author. His previous books include The Philosophical Roots of Anti-Capitalism: Essays on History, Culture, and Dialectical Thought and 1839: The Chartist Insurrection. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/out-of-the-blank-podcast/support
Jeremy Mayfield is still indefinitely suspended from NASCAR. Today he sits down with Dale Earnhardt Jr. and Mike Davis to share his story about the drug test that changed his NASCAR career, and life. The year was 2009, and Mayfield was a race-winner in NASCAR. May 1, 2009 he was called to perform a random drug test at Richmond Raceway. The test, and the result eight days later, would become one of the sport's biggest controversies of the era, and play out publicly and in the U.S. Court system. To this day, Mayfield denies any drug use. He contends that the positive test was a result of a combination of prescribed Adderall and over-the-counter Claritin-D. He was the first driver to trip a positive test under NASCAR's new substance abuse policy. Mayfield refused to play-ball and decided to fight America's largest motorsports sanctioning bodies. He not only contested the result, but questioned the head of NASCAR's drug lab, Aegis' Dr. David Black. The battle between NASCAR and Mayfield was all over the news and played out for years in the courts. Trouble seemed to follow Mayfield after the test and suspension. There was a July drug test in 2009 that resulted in a lengthy delay between the time of the call to test and Mayfield reporting. The Kentucky native opens up about what his lawyers were telling him to do and why the delay happened. That test, by NASCAR's lab, showed positive for high levels of methamphetamines. Mayfield says his independent tests, taken just hours later, showed no trace of the drug. In 2011, Mayfield's personal shop and house were the subject of a warrant and a raid by law enforcement. He details what happened from his vantage point when the SWAT teams arrived with machine guns and broke down the doors of his home. The raid resulted in a string of felony charges for stolen items and a charge for possession of meth. Mayfield denies the meth that was found and tells his take on the baggie they discovered in his safe. Mayfield still believes that all of the drug tests that tested positive were false or were a part of a greater conspiracy. He claims that a personal feud with NASCAR's Brian France was the root of much of his troubles. Now, this might not be "the' story, but it is "his" story. The Download gives the former racer a chance to share his account of the fascinating story.. He was the first driver to trip a positive test under NASCAR's new substance abuse policy.Mayfield refused to play-ball and decided to fight America's largest motorsports sanctioning bodies. He not only contested the result, but questioned the head of NASCAR's drug lab, Aegis' Dr. David Black. The battle between NASCAR and Mayfield was all over the news and played out for years in the courts.Trouble seemed to follow Mayfield after the test and suspension. Mayfield says his independent tests, taken just hours later, showed no trace of the drug.In 2011, Mayfield's personal shop and house were the subject of a warrant and a raid by law enforcement. He details what happened from his vantage point when the SWAT teams arrived with machine guns and broke down the doors of his home. The raid resulted in a string of felony charges for stolen items and a charge for possession of meth. Mayfield denies the meth that was found and tells his take on the baggie they discovered in his safe.Mayfield still believes that all of the drug tests that tested positive were false or were a part of a greater conspiracy. He claims that a personal feud with NASCAR's Brian France was the root of much of his troubles. Now, this might not be "the' story, but it is "his" story. The Download gives the former racer a chance to share his account of the fascinating story..DIRTY AIRBefore Jeremy came to the table, the DJD crew talks about: The World 600 and why it shouldn't be named anything else.
