All That's Jazz

This is a  is the story of how New York-based pianist, composer, arranger and educator, Caili O'Doherty, developed and recently released an album called ‘Bluer Than Blue' which honors the overlooked genius of Lillian “Lil” Hardin Armstrong. If that name is somewhat familiar to you, it's because this highly talented artist and composer in her own right was married to none other than Louis Satchmo Armstrong. Lil was Armstrong's second wife, and they collaborated on many recordings in the 1920s.   But it was actually Lil who wrote many famous, classic tunes of that early jazz era.  Caili discovered Lil's prolific background while taking a course  from Ricky Riccardi, the Director of Research Collections for the Louis Armstrong Museum titled, “The Music of Louis Armstrong.” Not only did it whet Caili's appetite to learn more about this unsung Jazz heroine, but also led  to assembling her core trio of Tamir Schmerling on bass, drummer Cory Cox ,and saxophonist Nicole Glover, along with special guest vocalists Tahria Clayton and Michael Mayo, to record Lil Hardin Armstrong's music. My conversation  begins with Caili diving into even more about Lil's  early career as she unravels for us details of this  little-known magical, musical history.

Cathy and Caili are planning a trip back to China in the near future, and her lifelong dream is to get to the Holy Land someday.    Guest Bio: Caili Sall is studying social work at Southern Utah University. Caili has an adventurous spirit. She took a gap year between high school and college and spent 3 months in South Africa and 3 months in the Holy Land. She will be venturing out to Mannheim, Germany to study during her spring semester in 2025. She also loves running, snowboarding, and hiking with her friends.    Show Summary: When we reflect on our stories, we are often left with memories that carry both joy and grief. Perhaps you got a job promotion while mourning the loss of a loved one, or you got bad news while celebrating a big event. We often have seasons of celebration that mix with times of mourning. Cathy and Caili Sall are a mother-daughter duo who have learned how to hold all of the feelings that come with adoption. Cathy was a single woman when she felt God call her to adopt Caili, an orphan in China. Together, they've learned how to navigate the ups and downs of their story while acknowledging the grief and pain that come with it. Join hosts Eryn Eddy Adkins and Vivian Mabuni as they hear the testimony of Cathy and Caili during this God Hears Her conversation.   Notes and Quotes:  “In whatever happens along this journey, I need to trust that [God] is still walking beside me, and leading me and guiding me.” —Cathy Sall  “If you're praying right now [about adoption] or God lays it on your heart, He will walk you through it. As a producer, Cailín's discography is steadily growing. Her debut 12″, ‘Phantom Love Affair', 4 tracks of raw, machine fuelled techno, caught the ear of Dave Clarke, who chose her as one of his favourite producers of 2021. Shortly after she contributed to Ben Sim‘s huge Symbolism VA as a handpicked artist alongside Lady Starlight, Insolate and Ritzi Lee. Since then, she has had a steady stream of releases on labels like [R]3volution Records & Diffuse Reality with more on the schedule for 2023. Cailín's debut EP on Diffuse Reality ‘Let It Go' showcases her upfront & two-fisted style of production as she hones in on gritty analogue sounds through six club ready tracks. We premiere ‘Temptress' a tweaking acid cut that lyes on churning drum rhythms and scowling acid lines, as she dives between harsh four to the flour rhythms & jolting broken beats. Perhaps we are just more alive. Yet as we discover more joy, we can face suffering in a way that ennobles rather than embitters." - Archbishop Desmond Tutu "Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light, not our darkness that most frightens us. We ask ourselves, who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented, fabulous? Actually, who are you not to be? You are a child of God. Your playing small does not serve the world. There's nothing enlightened about shrinking so that other people won't feel insecure around you. We are all meant to shine, as children do. We were born to make manifest the glory of God that is within us. It's not just in some of us; It's in everyone. And as we let our own light shine, we unconsciously give other people permission to do the same. As we're liberated from our own fear, our presence automatically liberates others." - Marianne Williamson (....Coach Carter) On today's talk, I get to reconnect with Caili Danieu, who is a Life Coach, Psychic Medium, and Intuitive Development Coach. Interview with Melbourne Comedian Caili Christian, who is back for round 2 after her first MAA appearance in March 2016. Caili has been keeping busy, performing 4 MICF shows in the past few years, co-establishing the Comedy Women’s Association in Melbourne (see their Facebook page for more info) and running comedy rooms. We discuss: Creating a comedy space for female-identifying and non-binary people, the #MeToo movement and the more balanced nature of line-ups in recent times, comedy becoming Caili’s world and community, comedians coming from different walks of life and sharing the stage in common, managing anxiety with pacing and relaxation, curbing social media usage for self-care, being mindful of comparisons, adopting the Mum Role and striving to make comedy a better space, encouraging people to avoid punching down and to craft better jokes, reputations vs sense of safety, remembering Eurydice Dixon and the shockwaves through the community, the polarity between men and women’s views on safety, the pain of facing the victim-blaming mentality, the charity Awkward Giraffe, the change in how the media report things, unhealthy gender stereotypes, Triple M’s No Talk Day, enjoying Steph Tisdell and Dave Woodhead on Triple J Breakfast for NAIDOC Week, the seemingly-impossible becoming reality in world politics, Plan It Change 10, lack of funding for mental health, an update on Caili’s super powers, and the brilliant Light the Way Home project to help female, trans, non-binary or other vulnerable performers get a lift home after comedy gigs (you can donate at: https://www.comedyfestival.com.au/lightthewayhome).
