Today on Too Opinionated we chat with singer/songwriter Catie Turner about her upcoming single Comedy & Tragedy: Act 1. The single drops on June 9th! Comedy & Tragedy is a two-part collection of songs and visuals to be released throughout 2023. The project showcases Turner's gift for genuine, personal songcraft while simultaneously flexing her sonic versatility with a newfound creative edge. At the heart of the project is Catie's belief in the dichotomy of drama – that truth cannot exist without both comedy and tragedy. Act 1 includes the deeply introspective (but still upbeat) "Hyperfixations,” which was featured in Rolling Stone's “Songs You Need To Know,” and “Easy,” which was released last week. The EP also features Catie's heart-wrenching breakthrough hit single, “God Must Hate Me,” and edgier new tracks “Control” and “Hometown” alongside the intensely personal title track, “Comedy & Tragedy.” In addition to the new songs, she also made Comedy & Tragedy The Musical The Series with a bunch of her friends.  In a way, it's Catie reclaiming the high school theater experience she wishes she had. She was too scared to ever really put herself out there—so she never did theater, because it required public speaking and being vulnerable in front of people. I'm still here.I'm less confused, but don't worry I'm just as chaotic as I was before!For a long time, it's like I was a square trying to fit into a circle. I couldn't find my place, and I did all kinds of weird things. At one point, I was even like, “Okay, now I'll look sad in my music videos.” It wasn't me…When my dad was diagnosed with cancer, I wrote a song called “Comedy & Tragedy,” and it inspired this whole project. “Comedy & Tragedy” is such a good way to describe who I am as a person and as an artist.I'm a mix of a burst of energy with some trauma and sadness sprinkled on top.I also use comedy to cope. When my dad was going through chemo, I kept cracking jokes to keep things lighthearted. I was really scared about what would happen though. I find lightness in the darkness, but I wish I didn't—so I'm exploring why I feel the need to do that.Music is my therapy. While everything was going on, I kept writing and working on new songs. That felt good. I got to explore these sides of myself that I was too scared to explore before. I felt so creatively free for the first time, and I followed that feeling. I'm not trying to please everyone anymore. I think this EP shows who I am for the first time. In addition to the songs, I made Comedy & Tragedy The Musical The Series with a bunch of my friends. In a way, it's me reclaiming the high school theater experience I wish I had. I was too scared to ever really put myself out there—so I never did theater, because it required public speaking and being vulnerable in front of people. This is my way of doing it (just a couple years later than when I was supposed to!).Now, I'm more confident in my chaos and in myself. All Ashley wanted was to be “normal”, but her adoptive parents were in a cult that didn't allow for such. She would do all of the things asked of her by her adoptive family and tried to connect to the performative spirituality around her while ultimately feeling empty in that environment. Sadly, as Jehovah's Witnesses do, the very people that made the choice to adopt her into their family would also make the choice to shun her later when she wasn't who they wanted her to be.
