Matt Crawford speaks with author Sylvia Lerch about her book, Grasp the Nettle. Set in a remote district of Western Australia in the 1920s, an era which outlawed suicide, an unidentified body has been found and police are treating the death as suspicious. The story presents a chance for strangers (the reader) to peruse the very private diaries of the protagonists. Intriguingly, this is like peeping through the coin slot of a piggy bank to count the wealth inside. Elsie has married Tom in an arrangement brokered by her brother. Tom's job is delivering the Royal Mail, and it takes him away from home for weeks at a time. Vivacious, imaginative young Elsie must entertain herself in their isolated, unsophisticated bush hut. Married women were not allowed to be financially independent. Grasp the Nettle is not a fairytale ‘lived happily ever after' romance, but a lode of accurate historical data balanced by details of underlined moral standards of life before the advent of reliable contraceptives, and acknowledgement of gender diversity. In those harsh times, things that are commonplace for us today were yet to be invented: like mobile phones, internet communications, and GPS. There were not even engineered roads through country districts in this vast nation, Australia. Grasp the Nettle poses the question: how did people cope with life's challenges?

In A Summer full of music festivals, one of the loveliest, happiest of them all is the Cathedral Park Jazz Festival. It happens Friday through Sunday, July 19-21. This is the 44th annual festival. It has gone through a lot of changes, some good and some not so good. These days it's run by the Jazz Society of Oregon and one of the directors is Yvonne Lerch who is in Artichoke Music with me. She's been on the Oregon music scene, in one form or another for a long time. The festial is free, so even though it's this upcoming weekend, there's no need to plan months in advance. Just come on out and sit under the magnificent St. John's Bridge and have yourself the perfect summer's day.

Renata shares her career journey, highlighting the evolution of marketing's role beyond departmental boundaries and the integration of operational strategies in creating a seamless brand experience. From her extensive global experience to her deep dive into different methodologies, Renata explores how these frameworks have shaped her approach to marketing.Key Things Discussed: The integration of operational strategies in marketing, aligning it with broader organizational goals. The power of blending frameworks to foster adaptation and team buy-in. Practical insights into applying methodologies in marketing for improved collaboration, prioritization, and iterative success. Show Notes [00:00:38] The Evolution of Marketing and Agile Methods. Renata discusses her career journey, integrating operations into marketing for a cohesive brand experience. She mentions Lean, Six Sigma, Scrum, and Agile methodologies' impact, emphasizing the need for framework-agnostic approaches with systems and design thinking. [00:04:21] Applying Scrum in a Marketing Environment: Team Composition and Roles. The discussion highlights roles in Scrum translated to marketing teams. The product owner's role as a liaison is crucial, and the scrum master role's absence in small marketing teams is discussed. [00:09:03] Applying Empiricism and Lean Thinking in Marketing: Mindset and Frameworks. Renata stresses mindset shifts, invoking consumer perspectives, fostering collaboration, and using frameworks for decision-making and campaign building. Transparency, data democratization, and benefit mapping are highlighted. [00:14:14] Scrum Ceremonies in Marketing: Sprint Planning and Retrospectives. The importance of sprint planning, flexible sprint duration, and the significance of retrospectives in recognizing wins and enhancing team dynamics is discussed. [00:18:50] Sprint Reviews and Retrospectives: Combining or Delineating? Renata talks about the choice between separate or combined sprint reviews and retrospectives, based on agile marketing leaders' preferences and organization size. [00:20:02] Aligning Backlog, Product Goals, and Sprint Goals in Marketing. Prioritization, deadlines, and the interconnectedness of marketing with other departments shape the marketing backlog. The synchronization of marketing goals with company deliverables is highlighted. [00:28:16] Balancing Iteration and Quality: Definition of Done in Marketing. Renata talks about the challenge of balancing iteration and quality in marketing's definition of done, emphasizing compliance with brand standards, quality, and voice and tone. [00:30:17] Blending Frameworks and Fostering Adaptation in Agile Marketing. Renata discusses blending Scrum and Kanban, adapting to the team's comfort level, and gaining buy-in through iterative, open-minded, and data-driven approaches. [00:33:49] Embracing Scrumban for Visualizing Work and Managing Overload. [00:36:09] Overcoming Misconceptions and Embracing Flexibility in Scrumban. The challenge of people confusing Scrum's prescription with Scrumban's flexibility is discussed, focusing on understanding best practices that work for the team. [00:44:43] Quick-Fire Questions for Renata: Dream with a deadline: Renata's dream is to have a team that is highly focused and synchronized, both within the marketing team and across the organization, understanding priorities and interdependencies, and being aware of the company's direction. Advice for embarking on an agile transformation journey in marketing: Start small and iterate. Begin with one team or implement tools like Jira or Trello to initiate the agile process, and then gradually expand and refine the approach. Biggest fail in working with agile methods: Renata shared an experience where the CEO of an organization disrupted agile processes, causing confusion and undermining progress. The key learning was that while bottom-up initiatives can work, without top-level support, it becomes challenging to sustain agile practices effectively. Books that shaped Renata's thinking: Renata highlighted the significance of the book "Systems Thinking" as a paradigm-shifting resource. She also mentioned that books on meditation offer valuable perspectives on agile methodologies. Specifically, she found Donella Meadows' book to be incredible.

Kiri is a 43-year-old registered nurse, professional dancer, mango farmer and mother of two girls 12 and 14. She resides in a small town called Kununurra, on Miriwoong country in the remote East Kimberly of Western Australia. Kiri was the chubby baby who turned into the even chubbier toddler, becoming the obese child who transitioned into the desperately dieting teenager and adult. At 13 years of age weighing 93kgms/205 pounds (172cms/ 5.7' tall), she embarked on her first diet- Weight-Watches and so began the lifelong battle of the diets and calorie restriction. Like many, she had tried it all, from low to high fat, low to high carb, vegetarian to keto and everything in between. Her highest weight was in 2008 at 110kgms/198 pounds and after the birth of her second child she made the commitment to take control of her weight once again. Years of restrictive diets and excessive exercise regimes, saw her maintain her weight around 75kgms/165 pounds, but as Kiri headed into mid age, years of restrictive diets and exercise along with a high cortisol lifestyle, meant weight management was becoming harder and less sustainable. Other ailments such as skin disorders, osteoarthritis and carpal tunnel were becoming more prominent and debilitating. In October 2020 she was discussing health issues to a good friend and a TFH FB group member. The friend directed her to read Fast Feast Repeat by Gin Stephens and The Fasting Hwy by Graeme Currie. Having always been invested in healthcare and deeply interested by science, she went on to devour these books and several more, having never looked back. Becoming Adipose adapted was a challenging process for Kiri. She started with 16:8 and white knuckled it for 3 months, watching her weight go up 3.5kgms/7.7 pounds in that time. Without the support of The Fasting Highway Facebook group, she is doubtful as to whether she would have made it through the first three months. Although she only lost 7kgms/15.5 pounds with IF, the inches and NSV are many. Freedom from demonizing food has helped heal her relationship with food and herself and gives her the extra time to work on being her best self. The Fasting Highway News Graeme is now available to have a private one on one coaching and mentoring session with you. He can help you with those burning questions. How to get started or overcome issues no matter what phase you are up to on your intermittent fasting journey. Get accountable and come and have a chat with Graeme who is vastly experienced in all areas of intermittent fasting and the mindset it takes. He also by experience can offer some real and practical advice around overcoming issues with sugar and highly processed food issues. Graeme has helped people from all over the world with his simple and practical approach to trouble shooting issues and has a great insight into the mindset into living a successful long term intermittent fasting lifestyle. In this week's episode, we are doing something a little different. Once a month we are going to bring you an episode of this podcast that's dedicated to all things sports in Rancho Cordova. We have invited Mike Marando to sit in as a guest host. Mike is one of the founders of the Rancho Cordova Sports Hall of Fame and is well-versed in the many athletes and sports figures that started their careers in Rancho Cordova, and there are many renowned ones. As Conrad Mayer, Chairman of the Rancho Cordova Sports Hall of Fame selection committee and an upcoming guest on this podcast recently said, "the history of Rancho Cordova is closely linked with some of the most talented athletes in the country. The time has arrived to look at this amazing sports legacy and allow it to inspire our entire community, especially our youth". So, we will hand over the studio to Mike once a month who will interview a sports personality that had their start here in our City. We are very excited about this first "sports episode" and for his first guest Mike interviews MLB legend Randy Lerch. If you are a sports fan, you are going to really enjoy this series of monthly interviews. We hope you enjoy this episode.
