South Africa's return to the FIFA World Cup after a 16-year absence ended in disappointment as Bafana Bafana went down 2-nil to co-hosts Mexico in the opening match at the Azteca Stadium in Mexico City on Thursday. Julian Quinones put Mexico ahead early before Raul Jimenez sealed the victory with a second-half header. Hugo Broos' side struggled to impose themselves, creating few clear-cut opportunities and offering little threat in attack. The challenge became even greater when Sphephelo Sithole and Themba Zwane were both sent off, reducing South Africa to nine men. Mexico's Cesar Montes also received a late red card. Meanwhile, the 2026 World Cup has already faced off-field challenges linked to visa delays, travel bans and entry restrictions. Somali referee Omar Artan, who was set to become the first official from Somalia to feature at a World Cup, was denied entry to the United States following vetting concerns. Bongiwe Zwane spoke to SABC Sports Anchor and Reporter Mawande Mateza

The 2026 Fifa World Cup opened with a result, record and refereeing performance nobody will forget quickly. Mexico beat South Africa 2-0 at the Estadio Azteca in Mexico City, with Julian Quinones opening the scoring after just nine minutes before Raul Jimenez headed home a second in the 67th minute. The match will be remembered as much for what happened off the ball as on it. Brazilian referee Wilton Sampaio showed three red cards across the 90 minutes, a record for a World Cup opening match and a number that puts 2026 in remarkable statistical company after just one game. Elsewhere in Group A, South Korea beat the Czech Republic 2-1 in Guadalajara, joining Mexico on three points. The two sides now meet in what is already shaping up as the group's defining fixture. For Arab fans, the tournament begins in earnest this weekend. Qatar face Switzerland on Saturday at 11pm UAE time, before Morocco take on Brazil at 2am on Sunday, a rematch loaded with expectation on both sides after Morocco's remarkable run to the semi-finals in Qatar four years ago. Tonight, Canada open their home campaign against Bosnia and Herzegovina at 11pm UAE time in Toronto, followed by the US against Paraguay at 5am UAE time on Saturday in Los Angeles. England finished off their World Cup warmups with a 3-0 win over Costa Rica in Orlando, but only after they'd been made to wait by adverse weather. Declan Rice, Anthony Gordon and Ollie Watkins scored as attention now turns to the game against Croatia next week, as Thomas Tuchel's men look to finally bring football home. Back on domestic soil, one of England's stars is the subject of a mega-money bid from Manchester City. Elliot Anderson is a wanted man, with City reportedly having bid over £100m for the Nottingham Forest midfielder. Despite being no longer a Premier League side, Wolves are making headlines too. They've sacked Rob Edwards just days after he was instrumental in the signings of Kieran Trippier and Raul Jimenez, and are replacing him with Portuguese boss Cesar Peixoto. Jack welcomes Phil back to the microphone in the wake of yet another painful Tottenham defeat, this time a 2-1 loss at Craven Cottage. The pair unpack the frustrating Fulham performance, dissecting the problems that were entirely of our own making, whilst desperately trying to cling to the few positives we can take forward. However, there is an elephant in the room that simply cannot be ignored. Jack and Phil don their tinfoil hats to dive into the growing feeling of a conspiracy against Tottenham, sparked by the referee's refusal to penalise Raul Jimenez for a blatant push on Radu Dragusin in the build-up to Fulham's opener. The sense of victimhood goes into overdrive as the boys discuss the utterly bizarre decision by the Premier League's official social media accounts to post a video openly mocking Guglielmo Vicario. They indulge their frustrations at the disrespect before trying their hardest to bring some level-headed rationality back to the situation. Attention then turns to Thursday night under the lights against Crystal Palace. What is quickly turning into one of the most important games of our Premier League lives is analysed in depth. The pair discuss whether Spurs can finally turn the tide, exactly what needs to change on the pitch, and ask the terrifying question: would another loss spell certain death for Tottenham's top-flight survival? Everton produced a spectacular comeback to defeat Fulham 3-1 at Craven Cottage in glorious sunshine by the Thames after being on the back foot for most of the first 45 minutes. A powerful header from Raul Jimenez on 17 minutes put the hosts in front and they continued to boss proceedings for the lion's share of the first half before the Blues got back into the contest with a slice of good fortune when Vitalii Mykolenko's deflected shot deceived Bernd Leno. Everton went ahead on 70 minutes when substitute Dwight McNeil's corner-kick was headed in at the back post by Michael Keane, who had come into the side as one of four changes, before Beto completed the turnaround three minutes later as his shot proved too hot to handle for Leno. Join Ian Croll, Joe Thomas and Dan Haygarth for the Monday edition of the Royal Blue podcast as they react to the 3-1 win against Fulham.  Goodbye to Goodison special souvenir edition:  https://tinyurl.com/GoodbyeGoodisonSouvenir Gavin Buckland's Book 'The End' | Order your copy here: https://tinyurl.com/GavinBucklandTheEnd Everton FC podcasts from the Liverpool ECHO's Royal Blue YouTube channel. Going into May, Fulham still have a lot to fight for towards the end of the 24/25 season. Eighth spot seems to be the position most fans are eyeing up but Sammy James suggests that perhaps seventh is within reach as well. A result against Aston Villa would put Fulham in a very tidy position with Brentford and Man City still to come. Sammy and Jack discuss the unusual formation Silva started with at Southampton and provide some updates on recent transfer rumours. Are the Walker-Peters and Ben Johnson rumours really that realistic? They make their predictions on how Fulham will set up against Aston Villa and whether the 12:30pm kick off and emotional exhaustion on Villa's part might shine kindly on the team. In part two, we answer some of your questions. Has Silva's man-management abilities fallen short with Raul Jimenez? Welcome in for another edition of the Morning Espresso from the SDH Network, brought to you by Oglethorpe University, Atlanta's premier undergraduate learning experience and soccer powerhouse.Disappointing night for the USMNT who lost 1-0 to Panama on a stoppage time goal from Cecilio Waterman. Panama's 5-4-1 gave the US fits, and there wasn't enough urgency to find answers or take risks. Mauricio Pochettino said afterwards that the US shirt wasn't enough in games like this, he said you could feel the difference in the hunger shown by the two sets of players, and he said the US needed to take more risks going forward. That's not easy to change overnight, and I'm really curious to see the response in the third place game against Canada on Sunday. Mexico will face Panama in the Nations League championship match on Sunday after a 2-0 win over Canada on two goals from Raul Jimenez. The top six teams in South American World Cup qualifying should be fine to qualify. Paraguay is unbeaten in 7 after their 1-0 over Chile. Brazil needed a stoppage time winning deflected goal from Vinicius Junior to beat Colombia. Then, Raphinha needed to prevent Vini from getting a time-wasting yellow card as he was subbed out which would have had him suspended from the Argentina match on Tuesday. Was he trying to get suspended? It looked bizarre.South Korea, Iran, and Australia should be the next teams from Asia to earn qualification to the World Cup after their results yesterday. New Zealand will face New Caledonia for the Oceania qualifying spot after both won their semifinals. Denis Bouanga scored twice for Gabon in their win in African World Cup qualifying. The door has cracked open for Nigeria who has struggled mightily so far after Benin could only manage a draw, Nigeria faces Rwanda and can pull to within two points of qualifying with a win. Mozambique moved into a qualification spot with a win, but Algeria could jump them with a win today. The New York Pancyprian Freedoms became the 6th team to pull off a cupset in the Lamar Hunt US Open Cup, winning a penalty shootout with FC Cincinnati 2. England starts their World Cup qualifying journey today, hosting Albania. England are unbeaten in their last 31 World Cup qualifiers and have never dropped points to Albania. The highlight of the qualifiers is tonight as Uruguay hosts Argentina in one of the world's oldest rivalries. More Espresso on Monday on the SDH Network, presented by Oglethorpe University.

On Clash of the Correspondents James is joined by Fulham fan Lewis James and Crystal Palace fan Ruaidhri McLoughlin-Dowd to discuss the latest at their clubs and some very important FPL assets ahead of Saturday's meeting at Craven Cottage. And by assets that doesn't just mean the players as Eagles boss Oliver Glasner is likely to be popular for Assistant Manager bonus point hunters and for those yet to deploy the Chip again he'll no doubt attract interest around GW32 when Palace double. But he's not been the best performing manager over the last couple of weeks as that honour goes to Saturday's opponent Marco Silva, as Fulham produced outstanding victories against Newcastle and Nottingham Forest that truly has them in contention for European qualification. Plus, those key FPL assets covered including Antonee Robinson, Kenny Tete's longer-term threat to Timothy Castagne; forwards Raul Jimenez and Jean-Phillipe Mateta, Dean Henderson, Ebe Eze, Ismaila Sarr and Daniel Munoz might not be the only Palace wing-back of interest in the weeks to come.
