In almost all of my episodes on Fine is a 4-Letter Word, I deal in varying degrees with the circles of life.In two of the themes I explore with my guests – the values and beliefs they were raised with, and the moment in their life when they realized or found out that everything wasn't “fine” – we see how these themes come together. And see where some of the conscious as well as the subconscious imprints either trigger the latter and/or blaze the trail for self-discovery, self-improvement, and self-actualization.For the first time, I have a returning guest, Christina Robinson Race, who joined me 105 episodes ago for a conversation called “Lighting a Candle & Letting It Go”.For a quick recap: Christina was raised in an abusive home and when she was sexually abused by a neighbor, got shut down by her covert narcissist mother who didn't want to deal with it. There was no trust and no communication. During our conversation, we delved into how Christina and her husband had applied lessons from their upbringings in efforts to be better parents to their children, and how her desire to be an available, accessible parent had influenced her career path.Today, we pick up with what's happened since that episode. It's been interesting to say the least, but it definitely hasn't been “fine.”The day we sat down for our update, Christina had just – and I mean within the couple days preceding – gotten out of surgery, packed up her house in Tennessee, and moved to Illinois to live with her now ex-husband, who in the intervening time had left her after having an affair with a younger colleague.Christina's children are coming along – her son is in the military, and one of her daughters is now starting as a teacher in a summer school. The biggest challenges Christina has been working to overcome is having limited social interaction as an extrovert, taking things day-by-day as a person who was so organized she would have color-coded charts planning things out months in advance, and finding out that even when your children are grown, not only do you continue being a parent, but it takes on new and interesting forms! Most people fear change, even positive change, because it involves the unknown. That's why we settle for less, conform to others' expectations, wonder how we became clones of our parents when we swore that would never happen, and stunt our own growth as human beings. In a moment, when you meet Christina, or reconnect with her as the case may be, I invite you to open your mind and your heart as you prepare to discover answers to questions you didn't even know to ask. Then be sure to stick around for the MANY takeaways, because there are some extremely powerful lessons here.Christina's hype song is "Brand New Me" by Alicia Keys.Resources:Christina Robinson Race's websites: https://christinarobinsonrace.com/ and https://www.epremium.com/ Facebook: https://www.linkedin.com/in/crrace/ Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/chrisraceAlso check out Christina's previous episode, Lighting a Candle & Letting It Go.Invitation from Lori:Now, let me mention that...
PUBLIC SPEAKING TIPS FOR NEWBIES: HOW TO DELIVER YOUR BEST RECFEST TALK Once upon a time, I too was also a reluctant public speaker. In fact, I did not even see the point of attending industry conferences - after all, what did I have to say, what did I have to learn? I am very glad that I accepted the invitation of one Mr Stephen Donaldson to give a talk at one of his events, Bill Boorman, who set up the first (ur) conference I really attended and Sarah Cooper, who by turning up at the door at the same time persuaded me to 'walk in' rather than walk by. No question: life and career changing - all for the better, as confidence, network, learning and profile have all up levelled. No exaggeration to say that Brainfood would not be here were it not for those early events. I'm keen for others to have the similar opportunity, so hence we're going to do a Brainfood Live on the topic of Public Speaking - in particular, how to get good at it. We're assembling an all star cast of industry professionals who are experienced on stage speakers and trainers. - What do they know about public speaking that others do not? - What are the expected feelings prior to the presentation? - How to build a presentation to enable best delivery? - What is the best method to control nerves? - How can a person who is introverted and hates performance, get better at public speaking? - How body language techniques do we need to know? - Can breathing techniques help? - What makes a memorable talk? - How to make sure you are psychologically level during the presentation? - How do I deliver the best Recfest Talk next week? We're with Akbar Karenga, Founder (Maarusi), Sam Berthoud, VP of Talent Solutions (hackajob), Angela Cripps, MD (Recruitment Gym), Christina Robinson, Founder (Green Umbrella), Bill Boorman, Founder (TRU) & friends Ep263 is sponsored by our buddies The Recruitment Events Co Recruitment Events Company run the No1 Festival for Recruiters - now in Knebworth AND in Nashville, Tennessee. In this episode, David is joined by Christina Robinson, who is CEO of Green Umbrella Marketing, who, on occasion, can be seen in public with an inflatable giraffe. She is an award-winning entrepreneur, who is on a mission to help others to build million pound businesses. She helps other people to be more than they think they can be. Christina shares how she does this and provides some insights into how to grow on both a personal and work level. KEY TAKEAWAYS Purpose is doing the things that make you feel most alive. You naturally do these things with greater intent. Not being authentic does not serve you or others. To stay enthusiastic and energetic, you need to be in touch with what your purpose is. Most of the time you can conquer anxiety, by stepping back, settling, and focusing on your breathing. Don't work with people you don't like and choose projects that align with your values. When your intention is to help people, that drives everything else. Look back to the points in your life when you thought, “I love my life”, as a way of helping you understand what matters to you. Some of the best things happen when you find yourself in a place of uncertainty. BEST MOMENTS‘What is it that you would love? – Make it happen.'‘Somebody can't be 100% every friggin 'day.'‘If you've got crappy energy, guess what crappy stuff happens.' ‘There's always going to be someone out there that will buy. It's your job to find the right person.' Imagine a world where more people can just get their purpose out of them, into a plan, and then actually make it happen. What a world that would be - People everywhere finding meaning and harnessing that to bring inspiration and energy to each and every day, changing lives for the better. But no one ever achieved anything on their own - we all have something unique to bring and that means we all have to play our part - if we want to go far we have to go together and lead or serve towards a vision of the world we want to see. Everyone has a story to tell, and this show is where these stories come to life. Dr Ikhenemoh is a GP, mental health specialist and author. He joins Christina in this episode to talk about how he found his passion for psychological health, what it means to have a mission in life and how you can help yourself, or others when they are struggling with their mental health. KEY TAKEAWAYS Starting medical school in Nigeria, Dr Ikhenemoh then spent some time in Russia, he left Russia for Holland where he continued his medical studies. ¼ people have an episode of depression in their life. Asking the right questions, in the right way for the individual, is essential when talking with an individual with mental health issues. Dr Ikhenemoh believes the word depression is often misused. All humans feel down sometimes, this is normal, but it doesn't mean you are depressed. In order to diagnose clinical depression, there are two questions you can ask a patient, if they have feelings of hopelessness combined with a lack of interest in life and they have been feeling this way for two weeks. There are conditions that can mimic depression, such as thyroid gland dysfunction, it's important to be able to distinguish when something physical is affecting a patient's mood. One of the upsides of the pandemic is that it lead to people talking more about mental health. It has become less stigmatised and more recognisable. Depression doesn't define the individual, Dr Ikhenemoh doesn't believe anyone was born to be depressed, he believes you have to find yourself outside of depression. You have to be able to recognise your own symptoms of low mood and/or depression. You can then start to deal with them, preventing spiralling. BEST MOMENTS 08:05 “We are all human beings; we can't be happy all of the time” 18:08 “Depression is not you, it's a state, it's a condition, it's not you” 22:30 “No human being should suffer depression” 33:50 “Every second of every day, I have the power, I have the control, I have the responsibility to choose my state” VALUABLE RESOURCES Christina Talks Podcast https://www.green-umbrella.biz/how-to-launch-anything-using-social-media/ ABOUT THE HOST Christina has been working with SME's since 2013 to launch, develop and perfect their online presence. A short but informative solo episode with Christina. Christina talks about how you can build your Instagram audience, the mistakes you might be making and some quick wins to help you in your audience-building journey! KEY TAKEAWAYS Think about what you want to get out of your Instagram before then focusing on your content. Look at the past 10 posts and stories you have been using, are you being authentically you? Can you see the people behind the brand? Engagement is key, it's not just about likes but people meaningfully engaging with your content. Can you ask questions or deliver content that invites people to comment and respond to your posts? Think about where your audience engages with you already, is it on your stories, your grid or are reels going to build your audience faster for you? BEST MOMENTS 00:45 - “Instagram requires a lot of effort and sometimes it feels like a lot of effort for not a lot of reward” 03:08 “We just have to be persistent…earn your audience, make it genuine” 05:55 “I know the things the people tend to engage with more” VALUABLE RESOURCES Christina Talks Podcast https://www.green-umbrella.biz/how-to-launch-anything-using-social-media/ ABOUT THE HOST Christina has been working with SME's since 2013 to launch, develop and perfect their online presence. Today, I am chatting with Christina Robinson Race about how her traumatic childhood in a tight-lipped Evangelical Christian household filled with secrets, abuse, and conditional love affected the way she raised her children. We talk about surrounding yourself with the kind of people you'd like to become, managing your professional reputation, and always finding the silver lining. Plus Christina shares a bit about how much her mom loves shopping at Target. Christina passionately believes in living a life of kindness and grace. She describes herself as a mom, wife, and salesperson and notes being a salesperson is both a description of her career and her personality. After living in five different states, she calls the mountains of NC her happy place. In addition to traveling and cooking, Christina's obsessed with plants and indoor gardening after managing to keep a plant alive for more than a year in 2021. She had strong motivation because it came from her biological father, whom she finally found two and a half years ago, thanks to a common home DNA test. Homeschooling is gaining popularity. Among many the reasons why parents choose to homeschool their kids are crowded classes and a decrease in the quality of education from public schools. But what if you’re not a teacher? That’s where homeschool platforms come in. Today on Educate For Life Kevin has as his guests Christina Robinson and Julie Friesen. They are both involved with Classical Conversations Homeschooling. They are a Christian centered homeschooling program. The purpose of Classical Conversations® is to lead the home-centered education movement by teaching parents and students the classical tools of learning so that they can discover God’s created order and beauty— and as a result— enable others to do the same. Classical Conversations fulfills its mission and purpose by establishing and supporting Classical Conversations communities across the United States and in several countries, and by empowering parents in the classical, Christian teaching of their children through Parent Practicums. They enable parents everywhere to equip their children with a Christ-centered worldview and the classical “tools of learning” in order to impact the world for God’s glory. Tune in to learn more about Classical Conversations and the benefits of homeschooling. This episode first aired on Feb, 2019 Educate For Life with Kevin Conover airs Saturdays, 2-3 PM PT.
