He's the author of Catastrophe!: How Psychology Explains Why Good People Make Bad Situations Worse. In this episode, we focus on “Catastrophe!”. We talk about the cognitive biases that people have during emergencies. We get into topics like trends in suicide rates and blaming social media for it, views on relationships between races in the US. We discuss if the idea of the “madness of crowds” is useful, and availability cascades and social contagion. We talk about how the COVID-19 pandemic became another culture war. We also get into terrorism statistics and how people overreact to it, and the causes of violence and its link to mental disorder. We discuss why it is so hard to tackle climate change. Finally, we talk about how we can manage crises better. -- A HUGE THANK YOU TO MY PATRONS/SUPPORTERS: PER HELGE LARSEN, JERRY MULLER, HANS FREDRIK SUNDE, BERNARDO SEIXAS, OLAF ALEX, JONATHAN VISSER, ADAM KESSEL, MATTHEW WHITINGBIRD, ARNAUD WOLFF, TIM HOLLOSY, HENRIK AHLENIUS, JOHN CONNORS, FILIP FORS CONNOLLY, DAN DEMETRIOU, ROBERT WINDHAGER, RUI INACIO, ZOOP, MARCO NEVES, COLIN HOLBROOK, SIMON COLUMBUS, PHIL KAVANAGH, JORGE ESPINHA, MIKKEL STORMYR, SAMUEL ANDREEFF, FRANCIS FORDE, TIAGO NUNES, ALEXANDER DANNBAUER, FERGAL CUSSEN, HAL HERZOG, NUNO MACHADO, JONATHAN LEIBRANT, JOÃO LINHARES, STANTON T, SAMUEL CORREA, ERIK HAINES, MARK SMITH, JOÃO EIRA, TOM HUMMEL, SARDUS FRANCE, DAVID SLOAN WILSON, YACILA DEZA-ARAUJO, ROMAIN ROCH, DIEGO LONDOÑO CORREA, YANICK PUNTER, ADANER USMANI, CHARLOTTE BLEASE, NICOLE BARBARO, ADAM HUNT, PAWEL OSTASZEWSKI, NELLEKE BAK, GUY MADISON, GARY G HELLMANN, SAIMA AFZAL, ADRIAN JAEGGI, NICK GOLDEN, PAULO TOLENTINO, JOÃO BARBOSA, JULIAN PRICE, EDWARD HALL, HEDIN BRØNNER, DOUGLAS FRY, FRANCA BORTOLOTTI, GABRIEL PONS CORTÈS, URSULA LITZCKE, SCOTT, ZACHARY FISH, TIM DUFFY, SUNNY SMITH, JON WISMAN, MORTEN EIKELAND, DR BYRD, DANIEL FRIEDMAN, WILLIAM BUCKNER, MAU MARIA, PAUL-GEORGE ARNAUD, LUKE GLOWACKI, GEORGIOS THEOPHANOUS, CHRIS WILLIAMSON, PETER WOLOSZYN, DAVID WILLIAMS, ROOFTOWEL, DIOGO COSTA, ANTON ERIKSSON, CHARLES MOREY, ALEX CHAU, AMAURI MARTÍNEZ, CORALIE CHEVALLIER, PEDRO BONILLA, ZIEGLER, JOÃO BARBOSA, BANGALORE ATHEISTS, LARRY D. Still need to get some holiday shopping done? One of the biggest stressors is trying to find a parking spot. So, this episode begins with some smart holiday parking strategies to help you score a spot quickly in a crowded parking lot. https://jalopnik.com/how-to-win-the-holiday-parking-game-5963162 Over the last several months there has been a lot of talk about a worldwide microchip shortage. These are the semi-conductor chips that control the workings of cars, electronics and just about everything else it seems. Why are they in such short supply? How hard are these chips to make? What is it they do exactly? These are some of the questions addressed by Chris Miller. He teaches International History at the Fletcher School at Tufts University and he is author of best selling book called Chip War: The Fight for the World's Most Critical Technology (https://amzn.to/3ULP20k). Ever notice when conditions are just right – very smart people can make very poor choices? This happens a lot when people are panicked but it also happens because of some other interesting and uniquely human factors. Why does this happen? Joining me to talk about this is Christopher J. Ferguson, professor of psychology at Stetson University in Florida and author of the book Catastrophe!: How Psychology Explains Why Good People Make Bad Situations Worse (https://amzn.to/3VKFHaF). Historian Kevin Impellizeri shares a story of a video game controversy to his friends: Elford Stephens, Phil Thomas, and Kate Lynch. In today's episode, we take a deep dive into the research that claims playing violent video games leads to aggression, antisocial behavior, and violent crime. The gang examine the evolution of "violent video games" as a political issue in the United States, why so much of the research is flawed, and the motivations of the people and organizations behind the studies. Topics discussed include: a video game based on C. Everett Koop, the relationship between video games and sass, and the chilling relationship between violent video game studies and police violence. If you want to know more about the debate over violent video game research, check out Patrick M. Markey and Christopher J. Orcs aren't' racist, Dungeon's and Dragons never radicalized anyone, and playing video games does not make you racist. These are general statements cited over the years as basic facts in the news media, yet they are almost universally wrong. We interview Stetson University Psychologist Dr. Christopher J. Ferguson, who published more against bad pop-science fads than almost anyone. Ferguson is the premier expert in the United States on video game violence and has written extensively at Psychology Today and other outlets. We go with Dr. Ferguson into these false narratives, especially when they orbit politics and nerd culture. Even the scientific establishment, like the American Psychological Association, will feature junk science in gussied up papers. Why politics is de-railing good science and how Ferguson would hope to solve the problem. Ferguson is into the science of video gaming. Ferguson has emphasized that media effects must be studied independently rather than taking a "one size fits all" approach. Last week on HBR Talk, Prim Reaper and Therapy Snek joined us to begin a read through of a resignation letter published by outgoing president of the American Psychological Association's Society for Media and Technology, Christopher J. Ferguson. This week, as we continue to read and consider the issues he has raised, listeners might be advised think about the purpose of psychological medicine and ask themselves whether it can be beneficial if the field is taken over and controlled by any form of political ideology.
Recently, outgoing president of the American Psychological Association's Society for Media and Technology, Christopher J. Ferguson, took a bold stand by resigning from the association in protest of its corruption by woke ideology. His rebellion took the form of his letter of resignation, a detailed description of the desecration he's witnessed in his field of medicine.
We are back on the podcast for 2022 with psychology Professor Christopher J Ferguson. On this episode we chat the perception of racism in fantasy settings as well as psychology and sociology in gaming.
Quillette podcast host Jonathan Kay talks to psychology professor Christopher J. Ferguson about his newly published academic paper, "Are Orcs Racist? Dungeons and Dragons, Ethnocentrism, Anxiety, and the Depiction of 'Evil' Monsters"

Bo and Charlie finally answer the questions that have plagued society our entire lives: Do video games cause violence? And, if so, is there a good ROI on that or should we just teach our kids to play "cops" instead? Along the way, we read... An op-ed in Newsweek in which Contrarian "Journalist" CHRISTOPHER J. FERGUSON takes up the cause of defending Instagram but also Video Games. Lord knows what drives this man. A Kotaku story about the engineer responsible for the PlayStation Store noncing his way out of a job and onto a bargain-basement To Catch A Predator which mostly seem like YouTube clout sharks playing on the moral panic du jour. (Charlie also found a tweet with Discord screenshots suggesting this awful YouTube guy does, in fact, do this 'cause he hates gay people. She admits it's a bogus-looking tweet, but asserts that her stance on this guy's methods is vindicated by it.) We also discuss: The british movie Gatwick Gangsters and how the Soviets still have the nukes! They still got 'em, folks! Christian dating sims and bipolar Christian video game companies. Last, here's our additional sources, because we're nothing if not Responsible Journalists. I would have put something here, but all the PlayStation exec Grindr convo tweets have been deleted and the screenshots removed from the YouTube video. So, take that with a grain of salt. I began doing improv and sketch comedy while an undergrad at New York University, where I was part of the comedy group the Wicked Wicked Hammerkatz. For years, I performed at the Upright Citizens Brigade Theater (both in NYC and L.A.) in sketch shows with the Hammerkatz and my comedy duo, Greg and Lou. I hosted the stand-up show Uncle Lou's Safe Place for two years in Los Angeles, performed at the Big Pine Comedy Festival, Bridgetown Comedy Festival, and co-created the political comedy podcast Unsafe Space. I taught creative writing at the City College of New York, "writing the web series" for Writing Pad, and comedy writing workshops for the Moving Picture Institute.

Mysteries surrounding Jeffrey Epstein's death now make it increasingly difficult for "grown ups" in the mainstream media to dismiss it all as just another crazy conspiracy theory. What's causing all these mass shootings? Some say guns. Dr. Christopher J. Ferguson, professor of psychology and criminal justice and author of "Moral Combat: Why the War on Violent Video Games Is Wrong" says Call of Duty, Halo, and Grand Theft Auto play no role in gun violence. Dr. Ferguson also says when you examine the numbers, gun violence in America may actually be declining. What can chimpanzees teach us about Donald Trump? We talk with Animal Behavior Biologist Dr. Jennifer Verdolin, author of "Wild Connection: What Animal Courtship and Mating Tell Us about Human Relationships" and "Raised by Animals: The Surprising New Science of Animal Family Dynamics." In family rooms across America, millions of children and teenagers are playing video games, such as Call of Duty, Halo, and Grand Theft Auto, roaming violent virtual worlds—with virtual guns in their hands. Does controlling or experiencing violence in video games cause violence, aggression, or other acts of malice outside of the game? This is the main question that I discuss with my guest this episode, Christopher J. Ferguson, Ph.D. He is a prolific researcher and commentator on the topic of video game violence, and he shares his thoughts about the state of the research and whether or not we should be worried about letting kids watch violent TV or games.Plus, we have a side conversation into the topic of misogyny and other stereotyping in video game culture and whether being exposed to those elements is equivalent to seeing or controlling video game violence.More about the podcast here:http://www.psychologyofgames.com/podcast/Subscribe in iTunes here:https://itunes.apple.com/us/podcast/psychology-video-games-podcast/id976468994More about Christopher J.
