In this episode, you'll learn: How to get clear on what you actually want in a partner (beyond surface-level preferences) and why this clarity is the key to attracting the right person The difference between people who date successfully versus those who just date often—and the mindset shifts that make all the difference Why most of us are unconsciously repelling the very people we want to attract, and the simple changes that can transform how others see you Have you ever found yourself dating the same type of person over and over again, wondering why you keep attracting the wrong people? Or maybe you're clear on what you don't want, but when someone asks what you're actually looking for, you draw a blank? I used to think that getting specific about what I wanted in a partner would somehow shrink my dating pool. Like I was being too picky or limiting my options. But what I didn't realize was how much time and emotional energy I was wasting on people who were never going to be a good fit. I was operating from this scarcity mindset, thinking I had to keep my options wide open, when really I was just keeping myself wide open to disappointment. Here's what's wild—recent studies show that people who have a clear vision of what they want in a relationship are 40% more likely to find lasting love within two years. Meanwhile, those who cast a wide net and hope for the best often find themselves stuck in the same frustrating patterns for years. Today our guest is Marni Kinrys, creator of the Wing Girl Method and a dating expert who's been helping people find love for over 21 years. She's worked with hundreds of thousands of clients and has a unique perspective on what actually works in modern dating versus what we think should work. #36: The Hidden Reason Smart People Make Terrible Life Decisions

Masculine Psychology

Perhaps the most important skill an intelligent person can learn is the Dao of Decision Making.  Making tough, high-stakes decisions doesn't come naturally to high achievers because they've been fooled into valuing their intelligence more than their emotions. But every decision has its roots in emotions… and relying solely on logic and data for these decisions is a quick way to make a decision that wrecks your marriage, your internal harmony, and even your future fulfillment.  In other words, there is a better way to access the deep kind of wisdom that makes the answer to high-stake decisions obvious.  Problem is, high achievers, by their very nature, have learned to cut off this deep sense of emotional wisdom for their entire lives.  That's why I recorded this episode. You'll discover the “Dao of Decision Making" method, figure out how to achieve internal harmony before making any high-stakes decisions, and you'll also learn techniques to give you clarity for every future decision you make.  Listen now.  Show Highlights Include: How to get better at making high-stake decisions (so you don't accidentally wreck your marriage, your health, or your enjoyment of life) (0:30)  Why making decisions based on the best arguments and logic can subtly lead you to misery (1:51)  The deadly “Illusion of Rational Clarity” that pits your emotions against your logic and results in making decisions that sets your internal world ablaze, leaving you miserable and unfulfilled (3:10)  Here's the brutal truth behind why smart people make dumb decisions (4:15)  The psychological reason behind why you get stuck making decisions (and the airy-fairy-sounding solution smart people rarely consider) (10:17)  Confucius's secret for achieving “Inner Harmony” so making high-stakes decisions becomes as easy and naturally as walking (12:39)  Why any decision made from panic or pressure will never be the wisest decision you can make (and how to learn to be still and calm when faced with high-stakes decisions) (16:57)  Use this quick protocol whenever you feel yourself spinning from a weight and high-stakes decision - it recenters you so that the wise decision become obvious (18:27)  For more about David Tian, go here: https://www.davidtianphd.com/about/  Want more success in leadership, deeper connections, or a greater sense of fulfillment? Nikki is a brand strategist and authentic messaging expert who helps her clients show up as the boldest, truest versions of themselves. Drawing from both her corporate background and her own entrepreneurial journey, she shares practical insights and a powerful framework for creating a brand that resonates. Here are some key takeaways from Rob Oliver and Nikki Bradley’s conversation:Your brand starts with your identity: you must see yourself clearly to be seen by others.Authenticity is magnetic—your audience connects when you show up as the real you.Saying “no” is a form of self-care and a boundary-setting skill worth mastering.Avoid the trap of imitating others online; your uniqueness is your superpower.Personal branding involves a balance of purpose, passion, blind spots, and your innate gifts.Feedback from close connections can reveal unseen strengths and clarify your personal brand.Branding is more than a logo or website—it’s about clarity on your values and messaging.Ideal clients share your values; think psychographics, not just demographics.Nikki’s “airplane test” helps identify clients you’d genuinely enjoy working with.Success is more likely when you stop trying to do it alone and seek the right support.Branding requires knowing the exact problem you solve and articulating it simply.Your name should be associated with a key problem your clients face.Tools for branding include social media, clarity on your “why,” and consistent visibility.Your operating system—how you run your business—can support or sabotage your branding.Building a business aligned with your purpose leads to more joy and less hustle.Faith, values, and personal alignment play a central role in Nikki’s brand philosophy. You can connect with Nikki Bradley and access her free resources here:Website: nikkibradley.netFree Masterclass: $100K in 90 Days MasterclassFacebook: NikkiFBradleyInstagram: @thenikkibradleyLinkedIn: Nikki F. Chris brings decades of sales wisdom with a refreshing blend of humor and authenticity. Whether you're a reluctant entrepreneur or a seasoned salesperson, you'll appreciate Chris's real-world insights on what it really takes to succeed in sales—without the sleaze. Here are some of the key takeaways from Chris Castanes' conversation with Rob Oliver:Sales success starts with learning how to find people to talk to.A full pipeline and consistent networking are essential to growth.Rejection is part of the process—develop “Teflon coating” and keep moving.Toastmasters and public speaking can help introverts build communication confidence.Sales isn't just about product—people buy from people they trust.Building rapport and demonstrating integrity beat pushy tactics every time.Relationship selling means showing up sincerely, not just closing a deal. You're always selling yourself—in business and in life.Humor and resilience can defuse rejection and create memorable moments.“Selling on the approval of others” taps into a powerful psychological motivator.Real-life examples (like Popeye and spinach!) make sales techniques relatable.Listening is more powerful than talking—find the client's real pain point.Be genuinely curious about your client's needs, not just your pitch.Follow up consistently; a client's circumstances can change unexpectedly.Keep multiple solutions “in your quiver” to serve evolving needs.Transitioning to virtual and social media-based sales requires creativity and adaptability. The barrier to entry on social media is low—standing out requires strategy.Your name is your brand—keep it consistent and focused.Avoid diluting your identity with conflicting side hustles.Chris's humor-infused book was a passion project turned powerful teaching tool. You can learn more about Chris Castanes and connect with him through the links below:Website: www.chriscastanes.com Twitter: @ccastanes Instagram: @chriscastanesThanks for listening to the Learning from Smart People Podcast!Subscribe, leave a comment and follow us on social media:Twitter: http://twitter.com/LFSPPodcast Instagram: http://instagram.com/LFSPPodcast Facebook: http://facebook.com/LFSPPodcast LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/company/lfsppodcast/ LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/imroboliver/ YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCbWV_LuUad7ZWuE9j5D9v-wYou can also use the "Contact" page on the "Learning from Smart People" website:https://www.learningfromsmartpeople.com/contact

Academic research is built on knowledge—but not on community. And that's a problem.Incentives in academia don't reward cooperation. They reward competition, individual credit, and winner-takes-all outcomes.Even when we want to collaborate, the system quietly tells us not to.Unlike companies, which reward people for building something together, academic research often rewards people for standing apart. Here's the truth:Most academic “collaboration” is instrumental—I'll work with you if I get something out of it.That's not real community. That's strategy. The only way this changes? We need to start rewarding cooperation explicitly—not just with nice words, but with actual recognition, incentives, and resources.Until then, if you want to do meaningful work and stay sane, you'll need to:– Disengage from local prestige games– Focus on the long-term global impact– And define success by the quality of your work, not how much applause you getThe academic game may be lonely. But we don't have to play it the way it's always been played.Let's reward people not just for being brilliant—but for being good to each other.

Episode Description Are your dreams taking longer to achieve than you expected? In this eye-opening episode, Scott Smith shares a powerful mindset shift that could save you time, money, and heartache on your journey to success. Drawing from his experience with a struggling business client, Scott introduces his "learn, churn, and burn" formula—three critical questions you should answer before embarking on any significant venture. Whether you're growing a business, starting a side hustle, or pursuing any worthwhile goal, understanding your timeline for skill development, commitment, and resource depletion can be the difference between success and disappointment. Scott cuts through the motivational fluff and delivers the "coming of Jesus, kick-in-the-butt" truth about what it really takes to turn dreams into reality. This episode offers practical wisdom to help you create a realistic success timeline and focus your energy on the minimal viable actions that truly move the needle. Featured Story Scott shares the story of visiting a client whose new business was growing slower than expected, causing significant stress as money was running out. Through a series of strategic questions about skill acquisition, commitment timeframes, and resource management, Scott helped the client create a focused plan with a definite timeline. Within a few months, the client reached their goal and has maintained a successful business ever since. Key Takeaways Most people underestimate how long it takes to develop the skills needed for success Setting arbitrary deadlines for achievement often leads to failure Understanding exactly how long your resources will last is crucial for realistic planning The support of family members (especially spouses) is a critical resource often overlooked Creating a clear inventory of your situation allows you to develop a viable action plan It takes far less than most people think to achieve their goals when they focus their energy Any worthwhile project has a better chance of success with realistic process expectations Dreams require specific skill sets and mindsets to be achieved Memorable Quotes "Success is always bigger than failure." "It takes far less than you think to get what you want." "Any worthwhile project stands a far better chance of success if you are realistic about the process before you ever get started." Scott's Three-Step Approach Calculate your skill timeline: Honestly assess how long it will take you to learn the specific skills necessary for your particular goal or venture. Determine your commitment threshold: Decide exactly how long you're willing to "churn and work" at your goal before reaching your breaking point. Inventory your burn rate: Calculate precisely how long your resources (money, credit, favors, family support) will last, then create a minimal viable action plan that fits within these constraints. In this episode, Monika explores why even the smartest people fall into common money traps. Our emotions and habits often override logic, leading to costly mistakes like fearing market crashes, selling assets at the wrong time, or waiting too long to invest. She breaks down two key behavioral patterns—mental accounting and anchoring—that drive these poor financial decisions. Mental accounting makes us treat money differently based on its source, leading to suboptimal choices like keeping low-yield savings while carrying high-interest debt. Anchoring causes us to fixate on past prices and unrealistic expectations, preventing sound investment decisions. Monika shares practical ways to sidestep these traps and take a more rational approach to money management.Next, she explains the concept of purchasing power and how inflation erodes what money can buy over time. While prices rise for most goods and services, she points out that some costs, like mobile phone tariffs, have actually decreased, challenging the assumption that purchasing power always declines across the board. In the listener Q&A, Kiran asks whether buying term insurance at 48 is worth it when he plans to retire in five years. Change the criteria you use to select managers. “There are only two things that are infinite, the universe and man's capacity for stupidity.”Larry Swedroe In this episode of Enrich Your Future, Andrew and Larry Swedroe discuss Larry's new book, Enrich Your Future: The Keys to Successful Investing. The book is a collection of stories that Larry has developed over 30 years as the head of financial and economic research at Buckingham Wealth Partners to help investors. Today, Andrew and Larry discuss Chapter 24: Why Do Smart People Do Dumb Things?Chapter 24: Why Do Smart People Do Dumb Things? In this chapter, Larry discusses why investors still make mistakes despite multiple SEC warnings. The past performance delusionLarry explains that it's normal for most investors to make mistakes when investing, often due to behavioral errors like overconfidence. Being overconfident can cause investors to take too much risk, trade too much, and confuse the familiar with the safe. Those are explainable errors. However, there's one mistake that Larry finds hard to explain. Most investors ignore the SEC's required warning that accompanies all mutual fund advertising: “Past performance does not guarantee future results.” Despite an overwhelming body of evidence, including the annual S&P's Active Versus Passive Scorecards, that demonstrates that active managers' past mutual fund returns are not prologue and the SEC's warning, investors still flock to funds that have performed well in the past.Today's underperforming manager may be tomorrow's outperformerAccording to Larry, various researchers have found that the common selection methodology is detrimental to performance. The greater benchmark-adjusted return to investing in ‘loser funds' over ‘winner funds' is statistically and economically large and robust to reasonable variations in the evaluation and holding periods and standard risk adjustments.Additionally, the standard practice of firing managers who have recently underperformed actually eliminates those managers who are more likely to outperform in the future. Why Are Warnings Worthless?Larry quotes the study “Worthless Warnings? Testing the Effectiveness of Disclaimers in Mutual Fund Advertisements,” which provided some interesting results. The authors found that people viewing the advertisement with the current SEC disclaimer were just as likely to invest in a fund and had the exact expectations regarding a fund's...
