With the passing of the "Pope of Pop Film" Roger Corman at 98 this year, a key era of American moviemaking left us. Producer/Director Roger Corman famously made hundreds of movies without "ever having lost a dime". He did this by shrewdly making very low budget genre pictures catered to what was hip at the time (monsters, drugs, motorcycles, sharks, aliens...) with super talented hungry young moviemakers. Jack Nicholson, Francis Ford Coppola, Peter Bogdonavich, Martin Scorsese, Joe Dante, Jonathan Demme, James Cameron just to name a few all come out of the unofficial "Roger Corman film school". And Corman himself directed or produced key indie genre movies including the Edgar Allen Poe series of the 1960's, Monte Hellman's COCKFIGHTER from the 1970's, etc. Secret Movie Club programmer Craig Hammill looks at some of the "rules" a moviemaker can still learn from the maverick master who made daring movies while also protecting the bottom line.
Heather Drain and Jedidiah Ayres join Mike to take a gritty plunge into Monte Hellman's Cockfighter (1974), a controversial and fascinating portrait of obsession and redemption. Warren Oates stars as Frank Mansfield, a man so consumed by his quest to win the cockfighting championship that he's taken a vow of silence until he claims victory. Set in the underbelly of the American South, this visceral tale pits man against his demons, much like the roosters he trains. Adapted from Charles Willeford's novel, Cockfighter pulls no punches in its depiction of the brutal, outlawed sport, which was illegal in 47 states at the time. Film scholar Kier-la Janisse discusses the complex themes of masculinity, pride, and obsession, as well as Hellman's signature directorial style in her new book, Cockfight: A Fable of Failure.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/the-projection-booth-podcast--5513239/support.

"Because there was once a god who walked the Earth named Warren Oates." - Richard Linklater Friendly, feisty, fresh, and so-very funny, Bright Wall/Dark Room staff writer & contributing editor Travis Woods is as passionate about film as he is endearingly supportive of all who love it. The host & creator of producer Blake Howard's podcast Increment Vice (which took a look at Paul Thomas Anderson's INHERENT VICE one scene at a time), Travis has also contributed physical media commentary tracks &/or video essays for a few of his favorite films of all time, including the recent Imprint Films release of BRING ME THE HEAD OF ALFREDO GARCIA starring his favorite actor (& raison d'être), Mr. Warren Oates. Joining me to preach the gospel of Oates in his thoughtful, sometimes philosophical, & always entertaining laid-back style, my Pandemic Movie Club buddy & I go deep on the films TWO-LANE BLACKTOP, THE HIRED HAND, DILLINGER, COCKFIGHTER, & BRING ME THE HEAD OF ALFREDO GARCIA. Likely just the first installment on Oates since we stuck with the first half of the '70s, fans of the actor will undoubtedly flip for this feature-length conversation on one of both serious cinephiles' & great filmmakers from Peckinpah to Malick's most beloved screen presences. Cinema Beef is back to give you a morsel of the chicken persuasion. Cameron and Gary discuss Monte Hellman's controversial tale of one man's passion for the fowl in Cockfighter from 1974. Warren Oates stars as Frank who is a mute who's only motivation is his next hustle and this brutal sport that pits rooster vs. rooster. We will discuss this great character study with an unfortunate penchant for animal cruelty. If you are sensitive about this subject, we apologize ahead of time. The beef is back! We continue Begleyuary with a film as controversial as it is entertaining primarily due to the titular bloodsport: Cockfighter. Directed by Monte Hellman and starring Warren Oates, it follows Frank, a fighter of cocks, who takes a vow of silence until he wins the Cockfighter of the Year award. Shades of "The Odyssey" and other road movies, along with a mesmerizing performance from Oates, make it a memorable experience. Ed Begley Jr. is here too, and actual chickens fighting, so, a caveat. Standup comedian and retired rooster fighter Rojo Perez sits down with Standup comedian and rooster fight enthusiast Ari Shaffir to talk about cockfighting. Futu Manu in Tetum. Pelea De Gallos in Spanish. Probably some other names in other languages. Rojo entered his pet into one when he was a small boy in Puerto Rico. Too young to be doing stuff like that. Ari went to his when he was 43 in Timor Leste. Rojo Perez is now a small man so he has distance and age to help him look back on his cockfighting experience. And Ari Shaffir is about the same age but far more bald. You guys should see it. They're siiiiiiick. So much fun. And beautiful. And it really brings the community together. One of the only New Word Pictures movies to not make money. It's easy to see why - it's about cockfighting. When you make a movie about cockfighting, you have to show a lot of cocks fighting which makes it a hard watch. On a positive note, we learned Eric used to love The Squirrel Nut Zippers and Ryan knows everything there is to know about St Elsewhere. So, all is not lost. Enjoy.
We bring out the Hellman's on this episode of the podcast as we look at two from Monte Hellman. We start off with the controversial 1974 movie "Cockfighter" and follow it up with the metaphorical masterpiece "Two Lane Blacktop" from 1971. Both films feature Warren Oates, Laurie Bird and Harry Dean Stanton, all turning in strong performances. Cockfighter follows a deliberately mute Oates as he competes in a series of cockfights across the south, in pursuit of respect and love. It's tough to watch at times and confounded us with some of its choices. Two Lane Blacktop, on the other hand, is a wonder. With a deliberate pace and subtext galore, it is making statements left and right. It also features very impressive performances from two musicians, James Taylor and Dennis Wilson. We then proceed to our lists of other things we've been watching. Please let us know what you thought of the show, and send us some suggestions for future episodes. You can email us at flickersfrom@yahoo.com or flickersfrom@gmail.com. You can also reach us on Facebook, Instagram andTwitter.
