Special Report Covid Coffee Chronicles Episode 78 MochaBox Coffee Washington DC The 10th Person https://www.mochabox.com/ This week we are talking to the owners of MochaBox Coffee, in Washington DC. Floyd Sartin & Harlin Thomas ll. From the east-side of Detroit to the nation's capital, how did these two decide to “see it and be it” The owner’s of MochaBox Coffee made their childhood dreams of success into reality. Not that there weren’t a few obstacles placed in their path along the way. With drugs and gangs in the neighborhood’s they grew up in, what are the statistical chances for success? Each separately decided to change their trajectory, and with that move the “coffee world” is better for it.This week we hear all about breaking into the coffee business with no previous background in java. Let’s start with their homage and a coffee brand name entering into their origin story. The Black Bottom area in Detroit, was originally named by early French colonial settlers for the dark, fertile topsoil found in the area. More importantly to our story it later became a thriving entrepreneurial black community, a cultural musical and business hub. Detroit you should be proud! Rwanda, Columbia, and Haiti, see how they decided to choose the green beans that bring people back for more. Direct vs Fair Trade what about the farmers? What do you want your coffee purchase to go towards? Dark and Lovely, Black Bottom, or Haiti Blue? How about all three. Building, pivoting, and adapting to Covid-19, and racial and social injustice issues with this fabulous AfricanAmerican small business. They are clearly bound for entrepreneurial success. With multiple college degrees between them, how easy was it to get started, and still what did they learn in a panel discussion that tells us all a lot about the coffee industry, subtle racism and the lack of inclusivity! From college experience, wing men, aspirations and how actually studying can help you graduate. Would you change religions for a date? Special Report Covid Coffee Chronicles Episode 76 Sip and Sonder 108 S Market St, Inglewood, CA 90301 For the Community For the Culture https://www.sipandsonder.com/ Sonder: “the realization that each random passerby is living a life as vivid and complex as your own—populated with their own ambitions, friends, routines, worries and inherited craziness—an epic story that continues invisibly around you like an anthill sprawling deep underground, with elaborate passageways to thousands of other lives that you’ll never know existed, in which you might appear only once, as an extra sipping coffee in the background, as a blur of traffic passing on the highway, as a lighted window at dusk”. Taken from the dictionary of obscure sorrows. This week we continue with our series on minority owned coffee business that may have been marginalized, or overlooked. We delve into some of the history of that marginalization and talk about why there aren’t more Black owned coffee shops. How far should you have to go outside your neighborhood to find them? This months cover models for Barista Magazine can fill you in. From high powered law firms and practicing attorneys, to coffee shop owners, how does that happen? The germination of Sip and Sonder is the story of two very determined Black women, with a vision. They were determined to bring the ‘coffee shop experience” to the neighborhood and communities they loved. We also answer definitively what’s the best part of law school and where you should go to study for the Bar exam. Do you think there are major disparities, and injustices with black businesses , and coffee shop owners in particular? And why aren’t there more great coffee stores in black and brown communities?
