“If you were gonna be a stripper…what would your stage name be?”   When you think about 1986, it's almost hard to fathom that we are 40 years away from it. Four decades away from perhaps THE biggest year in metal, and we're not just saying that because we were still young and impressionable, but because it was quite literally THAT epic of a year!    March, September, and October of 1986 gave us Master of Puppets, Peace Sells… (But Who's Buying?), and Reign In Blood (respectively), and that's only 3 albums of thrash greatness from that year!    There was also the (now classic) documentary “Heavy Metal Parking Lot”, showing a bunch of young metal heads pre-gaming for a Judas Priest show. And of course you had “Crossroads”, the favorite guitar movie of young fledgling woodshedding shredders who would become obsessed at mastering Eugene's bag of tricks in order to conquer the dark fretboard sorcery of one Jack Butler.    Basically, when it comes to 1986 and metal, “everything that was good came out that year”, and now, over 14,000 days later, 1986 is still being celebrated and lauded as one of the biggest landmark years in all of metal, especially on this podcast!   Get ready to find out which movie is “basically Karate Kid…but guitars”, prepare for a grammar lesson from Down Under regarding the proper usage of one of their most popular words, discover the transformative power of “The Gentle Art of Swedish Death Cleaning”, find out how “saddling” might be just the thing to spice up your bedroom game, and then JOIN US as we welcome “Juicebox” to the mainstage while we celebrate those who graduated MAGNUM CUM LOUDLY from THE CLASS OF 1986!!!

By 1986, Metallica's assault on the music establishment and eardrums was in full force. Their previous album, Ride The Lightning, had caught the attention of Elektra Records who signed them to an 8 record deal. Though they refused to make videos, weren't on MTV and didn't really release singles, the band gained fans anywhere they played live and through an underground tape trading community. They were establishing thrash metal alongside Slayer, Megadeth and Anthrax through constant touring and a relentless lifestyle. The boys really upped their game on Master of Puppets through stronger vocals from James Hetfield, more punishing riffs and melodic (and sometimes spacey) bass from Cliff Burton. The opener Battery sets the tone for this very influential album before giving way to the 8+ minute title track. True to form, Metallica offered up an instrumental in Orion which was heavily influenced by the classical training of Cliff Burton. Songs about war (Disposable Heroes), fake evangelism (Leper Messiah), insanity Welcome Home (Sanitarium) make for one amazing heavy metal album, the likes of which the world hadn't seen. We talk about the songs, what they mean in the Metallica catalog, their tour for the record with Ozzy and of course the tragedy in Sweden that took the life of Cliff Burton. When an Australian thrash band that never broke big in the U.S. gets compared to early Metallica, Slayer, and Maiden in the same breath, you know you've stumbled onto something special. This episode dives into Mortal Sin's 1986 debut Mayhemic Destruction—a ferocious, drum‑heavy, DIY thrash record from Sydney that plays like a missing puzzle piece in 80s metal history.Across the conversation, the hosts unpack how Mortal Sin emerged out of Australia's pub‑rock and Buffalo‑style heavy scene into a faster, more aggressive sound after drummer Wayne Campbell discovered Metallica through tape‑trading in 1984. They trace the band's rapid rise from self‑funded studio upstarts to landing a global deal, touring with Metallica, Megadeth, and Testament, and struggling with that classic “too big for pubs, too small for arenas” problem back home. Along the way, they dig into the band's revolving‑door lineup, eerie mystery around the original drummer's disappearance, and the evolution of Mortal Sin's sound across later records.Musically, the episode zeroes in on what makes Mayhemic Destruction such a compelling outlier in 80s thrash. The drums and low end dominate the mix in a way that completely inverts the American template, forcing listeners to dig for the guitars and exposing a strange, rewarding hybrid of thrash, New Wave of British Heavy Metal, power metal, Motörhead grit, and proto‑death‑metal experiments on the title track. There's plenty of love for the riffs, time‑changes, and dark modal choices in songs like “The Curse” and “Lebanon,” but also honest criticism of the limited, Hetfield‑ish vocal approach and the odd sequencing choices that bury some of the strongest material in the back half.If you're into 80s thrash metal, early Metallica, Slayer, Anthrax, Testament, NWOBHM, or obscure Australian metal bands that never quite got their due, this deep dive into Mortal Sin and Mayhemic Destruction is absolutely in your wheelhouse. It's a conversation about more than one album—it's about how geography, timing, and weird production decisions can turn a record into a cult artifact waiting to be rediscovered.Episode Highlights0:00 – Mayhem from Sydney – Setting up Mortal Sin, Mayhemic Destruction, and why this Australian thrash debut matters in the 80s metal landscape.5:05 – Battle jackets and logos – Gavin's origin story with Mortal Sin via patches, Kerrang! mags, and why some bands lived as imagery long before you ever heard a note.7:00 – Band history and lineup chaos – From Sydney origins and early rehearsals with Lino to global deals, tours with Metallica and Megadeth, and constant guitar player turnover.12:05 – DIY Mega Metal and Hetfield's stamp – Recording at 301 Studios, self‑releasing the album, mailing it out like a zine, and landing James Hetfield's 1986 endorsement.17:20 – “The Curse” – How the opening riffing, harmonics, and dissonant second‑guitar lines signal that Mortal Sin aren't just copying Bay Area thrash.22:30 – Drum mix from another planet – Why the massive, low‑end‑heavy drum sound flips the usual thrash hierarchy and changes how you hear the riffs and groove.24:50 – “Lebanon” – Dark, almost Slayer‑like scales, Dokken/Mr. Scary vibes, and how this track becomes a standout for mood and melody.25:30 – Thrash without a ballad – The near‑total absence of slow songs, the fake‑out intro of “Liar,” and what that says about the band's commitment to speed and aggression.30:15 – Honest strengths and weak spots – Praise for the riffs and rhythm section, plus a candid look at the limited vocals, buried mixes, and backward‑feeling sequencing.35:25 – Album art, demons, and Sydney in ruins – The Dungeons & Dragons‑style cover, nuked‑city imagery, and why this screamed “Tipper Gore nightmare” in the 80s.35:30 – “Mayhemic Destruction” (title track) – Proto‑death‑metal vocals and blast beats a year before Death's Scream Bloody Gore, and why burying it as the closer was a smart move.40:30 – Live vs. studio – What the 20th anniversary live tracks reveal about the band's true sound compared to the unique, drum‑heavy studio mix.[45:00 – Final verdict – Is Mayhemic Destruction a worthy album, a decent single, or a lost cult gem in the Australian thrash canon?Love uncovering 80s metal obscurities and lost thrash gems? “How about we let the producer ‘produce'?”   We've all heard that METALLICA's “last great album” was 1986's haunting thrash metal magnum opus, MASTER OF PUPPETS, one of the finest moments in the band's catalog and the final studio album of “The First Three” to feature Cliff Burton on bass.   “I don't care if there's no bass…I'm sorry…”   We've also all heard (especially since the release of The Black Album) that METALLICA's “last great album” was 1988's progressive thrash metal tour de force, …AND JUSTICE FOR ALL, the fourth METALLICA studio album overall and the first (of four) to feature Jason Newsted on bass (according to the liner notes, anyway).   “The bass is the LAST thing I listen to…”   Having said that, BOTH are outstanding and powerful albums for very different reasons, with PUPPETS marking the haunting, final chapter of Cliff Burton's legacy with what many fans consider to be the classic, legendary era of the band, and JUSTICE beginning a brand new chapter for the band with Jason Newsted, launching METALLICA into a new era that would ultimately result in their meteoric rise to success and glory as the biggest and most popular heavy metal band on planet earth.   “Y'all are gonna abuse me for using this word…”   JOIN US for a HEAD-TO-HEAD DEATH MATCH that promises to be absolutely “creamy” and chock full of 80's metal nostalgia and loads of heated commentary as we take on SIDE ONE with 1986's MASTER OF PUPPETS & 1988's …AND JUSTICE FOR ALL.   Visit www.metalnerdery.com/podcast for more on this episode Help Support Metal Nerdery https://www.patreon.com/metalnerderypodcast Leave us a Voicemail to be played on a future episode: 980-666-8182 Metal Nerdery Tees and Hoodies – metalnerdery.com/merch and kindly leave us a review and/or rating on your favorite Podcast app Follow us on the Socials: Facebook - Instagram - What the Riff?!?

A number of bands seem to turn a corner with their third album, and Master of Puppets is no exception.  Metallica's third album would achieve both critical and commercial success, crossing out of the new thrash metal sub-genre of hard rock to achieve multi-platinum recognition.  Lead singer and rhythm guitarist James Hetfield collaborated with drummer Lars Ulrich as the principal songwriters, creating riffs that were assembled and reassembled over time until they formed a song.  The band would then be called in to create a tile and topic for the song, at which point Hetfield would create the lyrics.Master of Puppets peaked at number 29 on the Billboard 200 albums chart.  Although glam metal was on the rise, the band avoided the over-produced, synth-laden sound popular in the era, and stuck to their signature thrash metal sound with political lyrics.  The resulting album would consolidate the thrash metal scene, and bring the sound into a more mainstream audience.Unfortunately, the album would also be the last one for which bassist Cliff Burton would be featured.  Burton died in September 1986 while the band was on tour in Sweden, and their bus was involved in an accident.Metallica would become a huge group from the late 80's onward, and this album shows the strength of the group in those years when they were just coming into the consciousness of the commercial world.Lynch brings us this highly influential thrash metal album.  Fans of the Show Julie Doran and son Zack join us in Wayne's absence for today's podcast. Welcome Home (Sanitarium)The song that concludes side 1 of the album was inspired by Ken Kesey's novel "One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest."  The lyrics portray the thoughts of a mental patient incorrectly institutionalized in an asylum.  The track starts slow and picks up steam as it goes.  BatteryThis title could be a reflection of the charge of assault and battery, or it could be inspired by the military hardware of an artillery battery.  There is also a connection to the original San Francisco thrash scene, centered on the Old Waldorf club on Battery Street.  Control of violent urges is a connection that runs through the piece regardless of the original inspiration.Master of PuppetsCocaine addiction is the master of puppets referenced in this title track.  Hetfield had friends experiencing drug addiction, and wrote this track from the perspective of the drug itself, taking over the lives of people.  This will be a familiar song to fans of "Stranger Things." ENTERTAINMENT TRACK:Loved By the Sun by Jon Anderson and Tangerine Dream (from the motion picture “Legend”)This fantasy film starring Tom Cruise and Mia Sara was in the theaters at this time. STAFF PICKS:Your Wildest Dreams by the Moody BluesRob starts off the staff picks with a song that singer and guitarist Justin Heyward wrote while thinking back on his first love.  It hit number 9 on the Billboard Hot 100, making this song the biggest commercial success for the Moody Blues since "Knights in White Satin."Mothers Talk by Tears for FearsBruce's staff pick was inspired by a mom telling her kids that when they make faces, they will freeze that way.  It is also inspired by an anti-nuclear cartoon called "When the Wind Blows" by Raymond Briggs.  The song was written by Roland Orzabal and Ian Stanley, and first performed in 1983.  It went to number 27 on the Billboard Hot 100. Kiss by Prince & the RevolutionJulie features a chart topping hit and lead single from Prince's eighth studio album, "Parade."  The song is more acoustic and stripped down than prior Prince hits, and Warner Bros. didn't want to release it as a single.  However, Prince insisted on both its inclusion on the album and its release as a single.Addicted to Love by Robert PalmerLynch closes out the staff picks with a song that may be more famous for its video featuring models pretending to play the instruments.  Palmer originally wanted to sing this song as a duet with Chaka Kahn, but was prevented from doing so by legal issues.   INSTRUMENTAL TRACK:Songbird by Kenny G.You just can't go wrong with a sax as we close out today's podcast.  Thanks for listening to “What the Riff?!?” NOTE: To adjust the loudness of the music or voices, you may adjust the balance on your device. Mike's ongoing quest to make Discord & Rhyme more metal inevitably meant we would have to tackle the band so synonymous with metal they put it in their name, and Metallica's incredible mid-80s prime inevitably meant we would need to tackle two of their albums in the same episode. Ride the Lightning of 1984 and Master of Puppets of 1986 are largely the same album in terms of overall flow, but the differences are every bit as important as the similarities, and the best material from these albums ranks among the best rock music (not just metal) ever created. In the summer of 1984, Metallica were not yet the Metal Gods and household names they are now. They were a band with one record under their belt (Kill Em All, hear UAWIL #138 for our review with The Hook Rocks Jay Scott), some experience playing bigger stages as an opening act and a small but loyal following. However, their US record company didn't have the money to pay for a new album so James, Kirk, Cliff and Lars traveled to Copenhagen and crashed in the studio as producer Fleming Rasmussen helped them pull together what would become their 2nd album, Ride The Lightning. As the album turns 40, we reminisce about how we came to know this metal classic, relive hearing them play (most) of the album live and debate if this is indeed ther best ever (Master Of Puppets is neck and neck according to us). We can really hear the progress on Ride The Lightning vs. the 1st album as the songs are tight with more complexity yet more melodic. And while the lyrics are very intelligent and clear, they deal with very heavy topics like nuclear war (Fight Fire With Fire), suicide (Fade To Black), ancient plagues (Creeping Death) and the horrors of war (For Whom The Bell Tolls). Cliff Burton's psychedelic wah-wah bass is not only unique but a driver of the melody that is inherent in these thrash classics. James Hetfield's powerful riffs are among the best he's ever recorded and provides that steady crunch against which Kirk Hammett can lay everything from frantic solos to trippy fills. This album remains #1 in the heart one of your hosts from the Metallica catalog - the other is on the fence. For those who haven't been following the bouncing ball(s), we've been discussing the '86 DEATH MATCH since we did our '88 Death Match a few episodes back (which was a complete bloodbath all on its own!) so we decided “What better way to commemorate our 5th anniversary as ‘The Number 2 Podcast Ever' (behind Rogan) than to pit the two finest albums in the totality of thrash metal history against each other…to the death!?”    If you thought our '88 Death Match between …And Justice For All and South Of Heaven was brutal, you'd better take a “get ready pill”, because you ain't seen nothing yet. As with each matchup in our HEAD-TO-HEAD DEATH MATCH series, the stakes are raised ever higher & the carnage escalates exponentially, and our '86 HEAD-TO-HEAD DEATH MATCH featuring Metallica's MASTER OF PUPPETS and Slayer's REIGN IN BLOOD is undoubtedly no exception. This was certainly not an easy task. In truth, it was quite “hard…rigid…difficult…” and given the sheer enormity of the task at hand, it was also downright “girthy”. From the most unbelievably legendary album openers (and closers) to the most haunting album art of any albums in thrash history, one thing remains clear with both of these ferocious audio offerings: “the bar is set”.   Get ready to “mark ALL the times” and remember, even though this episode might be a tough pill to take for some, whatever you do, “don't spit it out, just swallow it”. Prepare to “flatten the herd” and brace yourself for “moments of assholism” as we discuss “an eternal force that goes on forever” when you JOIN US for a day of celebration as we commemorate 5 years of Metal Nerdery madness with some “special guesteses” in The Bunkerpoon and go deep inside the octagon with our 1986 HEAD-TO-HEAD DEATH MATCH featuring “the most powerfully majestic” metal of MASTER OF PUPPETS and the “Picasso devil” infused, thrash evilocity of REIGN IN BLOOD.   Visit www.metalnerdery.com/podcast for more on this episode Help Support Metal Nerdery https://www.patreon.com/metalnerderypodcast Leave us a Voicemail to be played on a future episode: 980-666-8182   Metal Nerdery Tees and Hoodies – metalnerdery.com/merch and kindly leave us a review and/or rating on the iTunes/Apple Podcasts - Spotify or your favorite Podcast app Listen on iTunes, Spotify, Podbean, or wherever you get your Podcasts.
