Why are there chess Grandmasters, but not Grandmasters of noughts and crosses (otherwise known as tic-tac-toe)? It is because chess is “harder” – but what do we really mean by that? Answering that question leads us to develop the idea of mathematical complexity, which is a measure of how ‘big' a game is. We'll look at the complexity of popular games, and ask: what is the hardest game of all time?A lecture by Sarah Hart recorded on 10 October 2023 at Barnard's Inn Hall, LondonThe transcript and downloadable versions of the lecture are available from the Gresham College website: https://www.gresham.ac.uk/watch-now/maths-gamesGresham College has offered free public lectures for over 400 years, thanks to the generosity of our supporters. A conversation with Olivier Husson, engineer, system agronomist and agroecologist, working on a health approach based around the balance of Eh (electrons) and pH (protons) in soil, plants, microorganisms, animals, etc. Unbalanced Eh-pH conditions lead to poor nutrition and poor photosynthesis. As consequence, plants which lack energy and are being oxidised are attacked by pests and pathogens.Everything starts with plants and optimal photosynthesis, but most plants are too sick to optimally turn sunlight into energy. So, they are not able to create or regenerate soils. This is a fascinating deep dive into healthy plants and non-healthy plants. In short, it is all about energy and energy we either get from photosynthesis or photosynthesis from a few million years ago, aka fossil fuels.---------------------------------------------------Join our Gumroad community, discover the tiers and benefits on www.gumroad.com/investinginregenag. Oliver Roeder is a journalist in New York City. Recently, he has been a senior writer at FiveThirtyEight and a Nieman Fellow at Harvard University. Roeder holds a PhD in economics with a focus on game theory, and his work has appeared in The New York Times, The Economist, Slate, Nautilus, Aeon and elsewhere. Funny, fascinating, and profound, Seven Games is a story of obsession, psychology, history, and how play makes us human. This interview includes the development of AIs in games, and classic games such as Go, Checkers (aka Draughts), Bridge, Poker, Chess, Backgammon, and Scrabble.

For the third and final part of the ‘Getting Winter Ready' series, this week's Beef Edge podcast is focusing on animal housing for the coming months and Catherine Egan is joined by vet & UCD lecturer Catherine McAloon. Firstly, Catherine highlights the importance of space allowance over the winter period to maximise performance. Good ventilation is also critical and Catherine describes the two ventilation types, focusing on the size of the inlet and outlet for air to circulate in the shed. Draughts are just as bad, if not worse, than poor air movement and stuffy conditions and Catherine emphasises the importance of preventing drafts particularly on calves and young. It is important, she also says, to check water troughs regularly to ensure they are clean and working correctly. A railway arch in Haggerston, a library of 800 board games and the chance to cooperate or compete, Draughts London has become a popular East London hang out, for a wide demographic. Whether you’re chasing nostalgia, on a date, or just looking for something to do while you catch up with a friend, Draughts has that cosy atmosphere that makes you feel right at home. Founder, Nick Curci, joins Shout About to discuss how the concept came about, some of his favourite board games, their new site in Waterloo and running down Shoreditch High Street in his boxers, trying to stop a break in. 00:30 Recap of last week 02:10 What we did last week 06:20 Who’s on this week 06:59 Nick Curci from Draughts 07:40 New York 09:08 Nicks background 10:25 What is Draughts 11:55 Why boardgames 12:36 How did you come up with the name 14:46 The first venue 16:52 The venue being robbed 18:25 Challenges 21:10 Biggest success 22:00 The new venue in Waterloo 25:15 Opening times and dates 26:22 Costs and times 30:00 The Boardgame Game 33:20 Recommendations 38:24 Monopoly facts 39:35 Nicks favourite board games 40:24 Nick 41:11 Draughts Social Media 42:00 Recap of Draughts 42:55 The Weekly Shout 47:49 Weekly thanks 48:10 Social Media You can reach the guests here Twitter: @draughtslondon Instagram: @draughtslondon Facebook: @Draughtslondon Web: www.draughtslondon.com Mentions Talentbanq Big Red Rat Bar @ 26 Leake Street The Soho Grand New York Backyard Cinema Howling Hops East London Liquor Company Crate Hackney Brewery Open Day Boardgames Pandemic, Draughts, Dungeons and Dragons, Battleships, Chess, Hungry Hippos, Timeline, Azul, Scattergories, Balderdash, Atmosphere, Scrabble, Mah Jong, Risk, Operation, Give us a Shout on #ShoutAbout Instagram: ShoutAboutLondon Facebook: ShoutAboutLDN Twitter: ShoutAboutLDN Instagram: ShoutaboutStuart Please subscribe and rate us!
