A dynasty built on blood is preparing its next heir. In a move that stunned intelligence analysts, Kim Jong-un has publicly revealed his 13-year-old daughter, Kim Ju Ae, as a potential successor—positioning a child to one day command nuclear weapons in the world's most secretive regime. Is North Korea becoming the first true hereditary communist monarchy? What happens when absolute power becomes a family heirloom? In this gripping episode, we explore the geopolitical shockwaves of a fourth-generation Kim ruler—and the terrifying possibility that the fate of millions could rest in the hands of a teenager groomed for total control. GUEST: Jared Knott is a decorated U.S. combat infantry officer who served in Vietnam with the First Air Cavalry Division, a seasoned historian of global conflict, and the international bestselling author of the Tiny Blunders/Big Disasters series. His work exposes how seemingly minor miscalculations—missed signals, wounded egos, small human errors—have triggered some of history's greatest catastrophes. Blending battlefield experience with deep historical analysis, Knott brings rare insight into how fragile power structures can unravel. When dynasties, nuclear weapons, and succession collide, he understands better than most how quickly history can turn—and how devastating the consequences can be. From forgotten homesteads to treasured family heirlooms, Matthew and Katie Avant believe history lives in the objects we choose to keep.In this episode, we sit down with Nashville-based, award-winning director Matthew Avant and producer Katie Avant, creators of the documentary adventure series ROOTS & RELICS. Matthew and Katie take us behind the scenes of the show, where host JD Hart travels across America uncovering powerful, often surprising stories hidden inside rare artifacts and deeply personal relics. The filmmakers share how ROOTS & RELICS blends documentary filmmaking, archival research, cinematic reenactments, and hands-on discovery to reveal stories of ancestry, ranching culture, lost homesteads, and American identity. More than a conversation about filmmaking, this episode explores why personal history matters, how objects become storytellers, and what it takes to turn real-world artifacts into emotionally resonant cinema.Whether you're a documentary filmmaker, history buff, or storyteller searching for meaning beneath the surface, this episode is packed with insight and inspiration.

Josh Smith of MKC: Getting Sued, Scaling Culture, and Taking on Giants

EP 677 Josh Smith – MKC What’s up! This week on the Rich Outdoors Podcast, I’m sitting down with Josh Smith—founder of Montana Knife Company and honestly one of the most inspiring entrepreneurs in the outdoor space right now. This is a podcast I’ve been wanting to do for a long time, and we did not disappoint. Josh went from being a lineman for the power company, making knives on the side in a 200 square foot shop in his horse pasture, to building one of the most beloved brands in the hunting industry from the ground up. No investors, no conglomerates, no selling out. Just a guy who refused to quit and built something that hunters actually care about. We talk about the origin story of MKC, why he saw a massive hole in the hunting knife market, and how he quietly infiltrated the hunting community like a Green Beret special ops team before anyone even knew he was there. We get into the Benchmade lawsuit and why his entire team cheered when they found out they were getting sued. We dive deep into building company culture at scale, hiring the right people, why listening to your customer beats watching your competitor every single time, and why most people have no idea how many hunters have never even heard of a brand they think everyone knows about. But this one goes way beyond knives. We talk about Bridger Watch, building a product in a category dominated by giants, the parallels between what Josh built and what we’re trying to build, and the advice he gave me that I’m going to be thinking about for a long time. We also talk about legacy—knives that get passed down, stories behind the blades, and why sometimes the most important tool isn’t the most impressive one, it’s the one that means something. This is one of those conversations that reminds you why you started. Whether you’re a hunter, an entrepreneur, or both—this episode is for you. Let’s get into it. Interested in the Bridger Watch? If you heard us talk about the smartwatch we’re building for hunters and want to be the first to know what we’re up to—head over to bridgerwatch.com and get on the list. Three years in the making and we’re just getting started. Go check it out. Episode Sponsors Tricer Tripods – They make gear that’s fast, light, and simple, from amazing tripods to bino mounts, panhead truck mounts, and now even bipods. Trier just dropped their new updated AD and BC tripods, and I got to test the new Tritech technology this year. The center post is now a T-post, which makes it pack down smaller and cleaner—Drew is a mad scientist and he just keeps innovating. If you want to use code TRO, it’ll save you 10% at checkout. Go support a great company. Head over to tricer.com. Stone Glacier – If you’re in the market for a new pack, I ran the Sky Archer 6400 this year and packed out a lot of animals with it including a couple of elk. What I love about Stone Glacier packs is they work great whether you’re on a 10-day backpacking trip or day hunting from the side-by-side. Minimalist, tough, and they work. You don’t need to own multiple packs—this thing does it all. Check it out at stoneglacier.com and use code TRO for a discount. Your product roadmap should be driven entirely by what your customer is telling you they need—not by what the big brand is doing. By the time you react to a competitor, you’re already behind. The companies that win are the ones so locked into their customer’s needs that by the time the big guy realizes what happened, it’s too late. Most People Don’t Know You Exist—And That’s the Opportunity – MKC ran surveys recently and the percentage of hunters who had heard of them was shockingly low. Most companies would find that depressing. Josh and Brandon found it energizing. If you’ve built something great and most of your target market still doesn’t know you exist, you have an enormous runway in front of you. Stop assuming everyone knows your story. Tell it again. Tell it to the 3,000 people in that gymnasium down the road who’ve never heard it. Culture Is Built Intentionally or It Isn’t Built at All – From bringing employees to trade shows as a reward, to reading the Attaboy box out loud at company meetings, to bringing in bankers and health insurance reps to teach employees about life—Josh has built a company where people feel cared about. That doesn’t happen by accident. It requires intentional decisions every single day to treat your people the way you’d want your own kids to be treated. And when people feel that, they go the extra mile and they keep the culture alive even when you can’t be in every room.

The Book of Lecan Conference During this two-day event in October 2025, speakers explored the production of the Book of Lecan or Leabhar Mór Lecain, its scribes and patrons, and the texts contained within the manuscript. The manuscript known as the Book of Lecan (Leabhar Mór Lecain) was created in Co. Sligo in the early fifteenth century. It contains a large amount of genealogical material, especially relating to the families with which the scribes were associated, as well as historical, biblical and hagiographical material. Included are a Dindshenchas, Bansenchas, and versions of Lebor Gabála, Uraicept an nÉces, Cóir Anmann, and Book of Rights. The conference papers shared new insights into how the manuscript was produced, its history of ownership and the significance of the various texts found within the compilation. The event was a collaboration between the Royal Irish Academy, Maynooth University, and the Dublin Institute for Advanced Studies. Recordings have some of the lectures have been made available, subject to the presenters' consent. Margo is joined by photographer, slow stylist, and storyteller Katie Howie. Based in Saint Paul, Minnesota, Katie brings a thoughtful, refined eye to everything she touches—whether she's capturing a family in motion, styling a cozy and intentional home, or consulting with small businesses on creative strategy. Katie shares her journey from studying psychology and women's studies, to a decade in retail marketing, and ultimately to finding her creative footing as a visual storyteller. Margo and Katie explore the power of slow living and how Katie's “slow styling” philosophy helps people reconnect with what truly matters in their homes and their lives. Margo and Katie discuss: Katie's transition from psychology studies and retail marketing to creative entrepreneurship The origins and meaning of "slow styling" and bringing personalized, accessible touches to home design The power of storytelling in both portrait photography and interior styling Building authentic creative businesses through community engagement rather than paid advertising The importance of staying true to your unique style over following trends How family legacy, history, and personal objects inspire and shape creative work Katie's community photo projects, including her "By a Thread" series profiling downtown Saint Paul residents Working with families and real people to capture genuine moments rather than posed perfection The therapeutic value of using and repurposing family heirlooms in daily life Practical advice for creatives on finding their voice, sharing their work, and creating from authenticity Connect with Katie: http://katiehowie.com/ https://www.instagram.com/_katiehowie https://www.instagram.com/by_a.thread_saintpaul   Connect with Margo: www.windowsillchats.com www.instagram.com/windowsillchats www.patreon.com/inthewindowsill https://www.yourtantaustudio.com/thefoundry

Summary: In this episode of Be a Smarter Homeowner, Beth Dodson and John Bodrozic dive into a topic you might not think about often — what's hiding inside your storage unit or other outbuildings? Whether it's transitional moves, seasonal gear, heirlooms, or forgotten treasures, too many people lose track of what they own simply because it's out of sight. Beth and John break down why it's critical to inventory your storage units, sheds, barns, or other structures — and how doing so can save you money, protect your investments, and ease the burden on your family in the future. They share real-life stories (including some pretty wild finds!), practical tips for getting started with a simple photo inventory, and why HomeZada makes managing all these spaces easier than ever. You'll also hear how taking just a few hours upfront can prevent the costly mistakes of duplicate purchases, lost heirlooms, and even unwanted appearances on shows like Storage Wars! This is a must-listen if you have any kind of off-site or extra storage — and even if you think you don't! Chances are, you've got more stored away than you realize. Takeaways People often forget what they have in storage units. Storage units are used for transitional moves and seasonal items. Climate-controlled storage is important for items like wine and art. Documenting items helps avoid duplicate purchases. An inventory can assist in estate planning and passing on belongings. Taking photos of items can simplify inventory management. Hiring professionals can ease the burden of inventorying storage units. Organizing storage units can save time in the long run. Understanding what's in storage can prevent unnecessary expenses. Communication with heirs about storage contents is crucial. Sound Bites "I can't remember what was in them." "It's super easy to take an inventory." "Documenting is a huge reason to inventory." "You may be able to see large items." "It's a waste of money." "You can hire somebody to do it." In this episode, we embark on a captivating journey through the Mediterranean with an ordinary man, Hensel, whose life takes an unexpected turn. Set against the backdrop of a serene cruise, we delve into the complexities of identity and deception. In this story, Hensel finds himself at a crossroads—he feels constrained by his mundane life as an assistant county assessor, yet the allure of adventure stirs something deep within him. The darkness of the night seems to echo this internal struggle, as he encounters the enchanting Maria Novella, a woman whose appearance brings both beauty and danger into his life.Through the dialogue shared between Hensel and Maria, we explore themes of perception, as the two characters uncover how appearances can be misleading. Hensel grapples with the desire to escape his ordinary existence and to embody the persona that Maria believes him to be—an importer of rare gems. This desire sets the stage for a series of events that lead him on an exhilarating chase through the shadows of both the cruise and his own reality. As the plot thickens, the audience is drawn into a tense navigation of trust and betrayal, with Hensel stepping further into the role he never anticipated. As we follow Hensel on his quest, we witness how his initial act of kindness—to protect Maria's family heirloom—spirals into a web of intrigue and peril. The brooch, imbued with personal significance, becomes the focal point that draws out hidden motivations and unravels the true nature of the characters surrounding him, particularly the sinister Mr. Brilliant and the enigmatic Pietro. The storytelling takes a darker spin, forcing Hensel to confront not only the dangers posed by those around him but also the evolving definition of what it means to be an 'ordinary man' in extraordinary circumstances. The narrative builds to an intense climax, where Hensel must summon his courage and resourcefulness to navigate threats that emerge from unexpected places. As the police become involved, and Maria's true intentions are revealed, Hensel's world is thrown into chaos. The resolution beckons a reflection on the choices we make and the identities we construct, as our protagonist strives not only to reclaim a precious item for Maria but also to rescue himself from the clutches of deception.Through 'An Ordinary Man,' I invite you to explore the thin line between reality and appearance, and the lengths one might go to escape the constraints of their own life. This episode serves as a reminder that beneath the surface of ordinary beings lie complex stories full of ambition, danger, and ultimately, self-discovery. Join me as we delve into the richness of the human experience, embracing the notion that sometimes, the most unexpected journeys arise from our everyday lives.
