QUIMBAYA COLOMBIAN COFFEE Owner Alex Lozano                                                                                                                   Windsor, WI Episode 91 "Hips Don't Lie" https://quimbayacoffee.com/ Traveling the entire country looking for the best that the coffee world has to offer, as you know is our mission. Well this week we traveled our shortest distance ever, and found one of the best roasters in the  country. Alex Lozano was three long miles away at Quimbaya Colombian Coffee. How does a prosecuting attorney from Columbia end up in Wisconsin? That's just the tip of the iceberg uncovered during this weeks episode. Alex, who grew up in the tropical district of Barranquilla, in the northern part of Columbia, next logical move... cheesehead land of course.  Must have been the weather. What do Colombia and  Wisconsin have in common?  More than you think. An eyeopener for those who think of the Midwest as only flyover land! Learn the meaning behind Quimbaya, and why Alex wants people to know about this  pre-Columbian society, and the importance of buying directly from the roasting source. Heresy!! no intermediary? Another great reason to buy Quimbaya coffee! Who else in the coffee business may end up personally delivering coffee to your front door!  If you look out the window you may be lucky enough to see his little barista, entrepreneur sidekick!  Could you leave a successful career as a prosecutor in Colombia and travel to the United States to pursue a dream of owning your own business?  What was the "wake up moment" and what provoked it?  We are all vulnerable in life but sometimes it takes a near death experience to bring that into focus. "The best part of waking up" as the commercial jingle goes, always focused on the aroma of freshly made coffee. Learn the way his grandma made coffee and the imprint it made on his future in the coffee world. Just how can he (and we) help the farmers in Colombia? Find out the answer when he asked that question to the farmers directly. What did Alex soon realize when he began searching for the same coffee experience as the one he grew up with, and how did that lead him into the coffee business? Research, research, research, and the support of a good woman. A short meaningful conversation at a restaurant, the correct guess to a dialect question, and a business card led to a very special event. Alex's version is a bit longer, and it may include Shakira. Remember those hips don't lie!! We cover a wide spectrum on this week's show, from the law, drug cartels, and the violence perpetrated against coffee farmers. If all that is not enough content for you... meet your new favorite music style this week...Cumbia!  Listen on Spotify Alex's Quimbaya playlist and get ready to dance, dance, dance and feel like you're at the Carnaval de Barranquilla!  https://bit.ly/Quimbaya   BONUS for listeners? What do we do now? Cross Country Coffee Roadshow Sun Prairie, Wisconsin 53590 We survived  this season despite many obstacles.  Unfortunately Covid prevented roundtrip travel, but we figured a way to interview some fantastic guests (hope you agree) virtually. We ran low on funds but with the help of a wonderful sponsor we were able to put together some amazing episodes, that hopefully did not show the behind the scenes financial and technical high wire act we were carrying out. So far this season we have covered not only US coffee issues but delved into the plight of some growers and coffee sustainability.  We truly traveled around the world interviewing entrepreneurs,  coffee experts,  NFL Super bowl champions, former Coast guardsman, women and minority run coffee business.  A coffee business (Aspire) supporting those with disabilities and world renowned authors. From both coasts, and Middle America to Colombia South America, and that fantastic "land down under" Melbourne Australia. We brought you stories that spanned these United States, learning more about coffee, production, sustainability, roasting, tasting and flavor profiles. We tackled  a Colombian Revolution along with the differences of fair and direct trade, and why independent stores are so, so important to this ecosystem. We hope we educated you on how to look for not only the best tasting coffee, but what it takes to bring you this magic elixir!  How do we maintain independence and sustainability in the coffee industry?  Ok now its your turn! All that being said we now need your help, and want to hear from you if you are out there listening to our episodes and reading this. Did we keep you entertained, did you learn anything? Are we providing you with the kind of stories, guests and witty banter, that you need in order for us to keep going. As they say its the rubber meets the road time, and before we travel the next highway in our show and our lives we need to hear from you.  Let me repeat WE NEED TO HEAR WHAT YOU THINK! As you can imagine there is a tremendous amount of work that goes into each episode and if you want us to continue you will need to let us know. If this podcast has entertained or enlightened you with these episodes and stories from passionate, entertaining, and thought provoking guests, the time to let us know is now. Our first two seasons were all self funded, and we were fortunate to have a great company for the first half of this season. We are now actively trying to find a suitable replacement, and wrestling with the two minds approach. Do we stay or Do we go. Your answers will help us make that decision. We will respond to all who contact us,...so once again, send your comments to contact@crosscountrycoffeeroadshow.com and perhaps we will continue our journey with more stories, education, and our continued search for the best coffee not only in these United States but worldwide! Next week Quimbaya Colombian Coffee from Colombia and Wisconsin!!  https://quimbayacoffee.com/ Thank you for all the support you have given us so far and remember to buy your next bag of coffee using our show specific discount codes, and as always .....drink what you like and like what you drink. Amor Perfecto Coffee Colombia, South America Episode 90 https://amorperfecto.com/ We are back with Amor Perfecto in Colombia this week continuing with our “master class” series on the importance of roasting at origin. And now as they say…the rest of the story. Amor Perfecto is trying to upend the current coffee supply chain. Obstacles to changing 200 years of tradition? How did they manage to rock the coffee world and stay…and even grow and prosper in this hostile environment? The explosive flavor of this “freshest"' coffee may have something to do with it. Listen to the voices of this team talk about their farmers, and why scanning one of their QR codes will take you right into that farmers story! Luis, called for nothing less than the overthrow of the status quo coffee system, and “decolonization", of an "antiquated supply chain". Viva la revolución! Coffee ground in a big store machine? What's not to love about that! Unless you like your coffee to taste like cigarettes, and more thoughts on coffee by a team member. Why is there no such thing as Italian coffee? And will there be a war over this debate? From Nescafe con leche, to a French Press. Luis sold his freshly ground coffee in his dried flower shop, and from there a movement began. What exactly do grapes grown in France and great wine have to do with an Oxford study on green coffee beans? How about eating potato chips on a plane? It will all make perfect sense when you listen to this week's episode with the entire crew of Amor Perfecto. The freshest podcast ever straight from Colombia….without any middleman. Proof positive that tenacity, love of coffee and love of country do eventually pay off. Roast in country of origin? Heresy! What was his impetus for this rebellious act? Our guests this week are Ignacio Iribarren, Hunter Rodgers, Sara Andrade and founder  Luis Fernando Valez. His mission is to bring the freshest, best tasting Colombian coffee to the world.  Luis's  journey takes him (and us) from farm to cup all the while receiving  more than 20 international awards How long would a conversation between Columbians last before Luis (uncle Lucho) began his crusade and how about now. What Colombians now know about their own coffee, and why things have changed due to Amor Perfecto! What do grapes have to do with green coffee beans? You will never look at this product from France the same after this interview. Frida Kahlo, hand picked beans, transparency, traceability, and increasing the farmers living wage. You want coffee demystified, you want content, this is your episode. Retired Super Bowl Champion Justin Watson used to fall asleep during play review meetings, until he was introduced to this wonderful concoction with caffeine called ...coffee....who knew? For this former St. Louis Rams running back, this may have been the beginning of his journey into the world of java, but definitely not where he ended up Ritchie Tuazon who is now a major portfolio manager, steeped in the investment world with multiple degrees from UC Berkeley, MIT Sloan and Harvard, to name a few, had a different coffee path, but what changed during the pandemic? . Brothers from different mothers. How could these guys grow up so differently and yet have such similar traits? Drive and determination crosses a lot of boundaries and neighborhoods. Learn how to make course corrections and give 110% in a business, in a game or in life. This is wise advice from anyone, but especially cogent and meaningful coming from these two. How does being kicked out of a Starbucks on Juneteenth, lead to a discussion about a “coffee project” and eventually the formation of BLQK? You think you know what that acronym stands for? Reveille Trading Company 6595 Roswell Rd. Suite G-3066. Atlanta, Georgia 30328 https://reveille.io/ Episode 86 Reveille" , called in French "Le Réveil" is a bugle call, trumpet call, drum, fife-and-drum or pipes call most often associated with the military; it is chiefly used to wake military personnel at sunrise. The name comes from réveille (or réveil), the French word for "wake up How fitting a name is this for a retired military man to come up with for his coffee company ...wake up! This week we talk with Calvin Harris, the Founder & Managing Director of Reveille Trading Company, a black- and veteran-owned direct trade coffee company focusing on empowering small farmers through business. They focus not on transactions but relationships...what a concept in today's world. Although the company is in Atlanta Georgia, we caught up with Calvin in Florida to talk about his transition from the US Coast Guard to coffee. Serving in the US Coast Guard for five years, planning on Officers Training School and then sidelined with medical issues, what is a retired veteran to do? Ask his father of course. Oh you should be so lucky to get this kind of advice from your patriarch!! Looking for a new mission in retirement and in the prime of his life, Calvin traveled the world opening his eyes to what abject poverty really meant. This led to the second great piece of advice his wise father gave him...are you sensing a theme here? This one put all the puzzle pieces in place for this amazing young entrepreneur. What's a guy to do when you wake up in Cambodia, with someone forcing fluids into you without your knowledge? And the fluids? Saline? Gatorade? How about vodka! Say a Cambodian Police Officer overhears your friend talking negatively about the Cambodia government, walks over, and hands you his gun, could the rest of this story possibly go well? No re-education camp for this guy. From Bachelors, and Masters, to nearing the end of his PhD this man does not stop. It's a good thing java lovers he has now focused his energies on coffee. Calvin is on a mission now to not only educate the public, and bring to the forefront the plight of the farmers who grow and produce the coffee we all love, but also to ensure a fair and equitable wage. A short lesson in direct vs fair trade, the commodity index, and how Covid has affected this business. Sounds boring?? Trust me with Calvin it definitely is not! Chaos in Colombia Quimbaya Colombian Coffee. LLC Owner Alex Lozano Windsor, WI Episode 85 This week's guest is the owner of Quimbaya Colombian Coffee. He is however on the show for this episode not promoting his coffee or his business but discussing the issues in his homeland. The reason for this lack of self-promotion will become crystal-clear in this interview. We are taking a break from our usual routine and revisiting Covid coffee Chronicles where we tackle specific subjects, related to the coffee industry. If you’ve been following Colombia this may be a refresher course, if you have no idea what we’re talking about stay tuned for some eye-opening information. The impact on Alex’s business is magnified, and that he has all of the components of his coffee business taking place in Colombia from growing the seed to roasting the beans. Colombia is the third largest coffee producer of coffee in the world, with over two million Colombians dependent on this source of revenue from coffee production for their income. That is over 25% of the rural population. The combination of civil unrest, a worsening of the Covid pandemic and the culmination of building resentment to lack of representation and pay inequities have forced everything to head. The newest demonstrations there are putting a halt to commerce, on many fronts. This is resulting in a significant early impact on the coffee industry, and specifically on our small businesses focus this week. Tired of “tax reforms”, lack of government representation and being squeezed on both the wages and price market, people are “not going to take it anymore”. What about the farmers in the rural areas? What is stopping them from harvesting their crop? Can anything be done to protect them? Hey but this is all happening in Colombia why should it affect me here in the USofA? Learn how the anti government protesters are causing the extreme slow down of coffee exportation, and why what happens there today can affect you here tomorrow! Alex Lozano shares his personal stories from his homeland and the heartbreak over the unrest. He also talks about his beloved country and how the slow down of coffee production is not only affecting not only him, but potentially the lovers of coffee in his new country, the United States of America. Listen to a boots on the ground discussion of all things Colombia from someone who grew up there, smelling the aroma of his grandma's freshly brewed coffee. Alex ends with a poignant and extremely important request of coffee drinkers everywhere. It's a simple ask, but truly something everyone could and should be doing. So for right now as long as supplies last feel free to order some fantastic Colombian coffee from Quimbaya Colombian Coffee, LLC. https://quimbayacoffee.com      .

You tell us if you don’t think this should be part of every elementary curriculum. Now kids, go find a coffee bean or some coffee grounds.(ask your parents first) then bring it back to the screen! What were the challenges facing a minority and all women owned small businesses trying to secure a loan, and did Covid help or hurt in that avenue? What about partnerships? Coffee with care and detail you got it, but who didn't even own a coffee maker at one time and why. Relationships have risen and fallen on these factors! This roaster/barista has a story to tell but first, Charlotte wants her coffee in the morning! You say patahto, I say potato. But how do you say theatre? Just one of the subjects covered in this week's episode of regional accents and linguistics with the Coffee Roadshow and Kestrel Coffee Roasters. We branch out, from coffee and linguistics into a small lesson in ornithology, and the origin of the Kestrel name. Can't say we aren't going for an all inclusive audience! Have you been in an airport had your flight cancelled and no way to get to your destination but rent a car with a stranger? If this plot sounds familiar, you may be a fan of John Candy, and Steve Martin in the movie Trains, Planes and Automobiles. While listening to Johnny's trip with a stranger in a red Mustang it may bring back fond memories of this classic tale. How do you go from tea to coffee, and from culinary school, to Q grader and why! Wow.. The short answer is a great palate and lots of studying! Now for the culinary portion of this week's show...again remember we are all inclusive. What’s made of butter, sugar, salt and dough? Graziella Coffee Tony Ponte Brooklyn, New York Episode 81 Graziella Coffee Company This week we are in Brooklyn New York where we caught up with Tony Ponte, owner and founder of Graziella Coffee, a small batch roaster, with a strong family history in coffee and proud Italian lineage. His coffee story begins with his maternal grandparents who immigrated from Italy and his paternal grandparents who owned and operated a coffee shop. The Pesce's grew up in Southern Italy on the family farm before immigrating to Northwest Connecticut. His paternal grandparents opened up a franchise location of a family coffee shop, which had originated in Rhode Island called Bess Eaton Donuts, when they arrived. Wait... so its not Bessie and Donuts? Oh the trouble we can get into. They definitely passed on their work ethic to Tony. At least initially, that did not include their love for coffee, either as a utility or a social lubricant.  Working in the coffee shop, that had since been taken over by his uncles and father, he realized that he didn't really enjoy coffee or donuts. Luckily for us that was early on in his life. So, when did he develop his refined palate for coffee and does he like donuts now? By the way just who doesn’t like donuts? I can hear Homer Simpson crying out …Mmmm….doughnuts… drooling and ….doh. Like his grandparents before him he gradually started to drink coffee as a utility, to get him through the work day.  How did that change to a love of coffee? Enter his biggest influence, and the sage advice, from his good friend that changed his career path. Before jumping into a career, why not take a 30 day motorbike tour of Vietnam with your girlfriend! What could possibly go wrong? Never mind that he couldn't ride a motorbike. What about being held hostage, and riding four to seven hours a day dodging semis, one lane roads and in the pouring rain! And what was the one song refrain that got him through....oh, oh oh I'm...., listen for the rest of this tune and the proper way to sing it! Just how much should you pay for a cup of coffee? Be prepared for a math lesson, that makes complete sense, and one that you will be telling your friends about! Learn why it's so important to expose people to the plight of the coffee farmer and sustainability. How do we keep this dialog alive, and just where can we buy ethical coffee? We had to stop our interview due to wailing fire trucks passing by but this very introspective coffee roaster gave us a new perspective on all things emergent, and what it truly means to live in a big city. Classic take. All this and Literary Latte and a Spotify playlist... favorite music and book can tell you a great deal about a great guy. Join us this week as we introduce you to Graziella Coffee and Tony Ponte we are so glad your grandparents immigrated from Italy. Special Report Covid Coffee Chronicles Episode 78 MochaBox Coffee Washington DC The 10th Person https://www.mochabox.com/ This week we are talking to the owners of MochaBox Coffee, in Washington DC. Floyd Sartin & Harlin Thomas ll. From the east-side of Detroit to the nation's capital, how did these two decide to “see it and be it” The owner’s of MochaBox Coffee made their childhood dreams of success into reality. Not that there weren’t a few obstacles placed in their path along the way. With drugs and gangs in the neighborhood’s they grew up in, what are the statistical chances for success? Does it make a difference who you surround yourself with? Each separately decided to change their trajectory, and with that move the “coffee world” is better for it.This week we hear all about breaking into the coffee business with no previous background in java. Let’s start with their homage and a coffee brand name entering into their origin story. The Black Bottom area in Detroit, was originally named by early French colonial settlers for the dark, fertile topsoil found in the area. More importantly to our story it later became a thriving entrepreneurial black community, a cultural musical and business hub. That brings us to the MochaBox connection and their roast Black Bottom, that pays homage to their Detroit roots and that period of time. “Lively” medium dark, floral notes, and hints of honey, designed for everybody. Detroit you should be proud! Rwanda, Columbia, and Haiti, see how they decided to choose the green beans that bring people back for more. Direct vs Fair Trade what about the farmers? What do you want your coffee purchase to go towards? Dark and Lovely, Black Bottom, or Haiti Blue? How about all three. This week's episode will help you refine your palate while learning from these “ coerced “ roasters what you should be drinking. Subscription coffee service to roasting and “pop ups''. Building, pivoting, and adapting to Covid-19, and racial and social injustice issues with this fabulous AfricanAmerican small business. They are clearly bound for entrepreneurial success. With multiple college degrees between them, how easy was it to get started, and still what did they learn in a panel discussion that tells us all a lot about the coffee industry, subtle racism and the lack of inclusivity! From college experience, wing men, aspirations and how actually studying can help you graduate. Would you change religions for a date? If you surround yourself with 9 successful people who will be the 10th person? Taken from the dictionary of obscure sorrows. This week we continue with our series on minority owned coffee business that may have been marginalized, or overlooked. We delve into some of the history of that marginalization and talk about why there aren’t more Black owned coffee shops. How far should you have to go outside your neighborhood to find them? Special Report Covid Coffee Chronicles Episode 73 AOSA Coffee 16821 Algonquin St #104, Huntington Beach, CA 92649 A Perfect Blend We, like many Americans have had to change course, since the start of the Covid-19 pandemic. We are now practicing social distancing, and no longer traveling the country in person. We have developed a series of special remote episodes focusing on how the pandemic is affecting small businesses and stores that were not initially  on our radar. With this next series of episodes we'll be focusing on the recent impact of increased social injustice, and areas of conscious and implicit discrimination. We will gather different perspectives on these issues and what this new reality looks like. Many still don’t understand the meaning and implications of what is taking place with the social injustice movement and Black Lives Matter.  We will be launching some deep dive questions about race, privilege and implicit bias. The conversation needs all of us. We will focus on minority owned coffee shops/businesses and locations that are promoting social justice dialogue and discussion about prejudicial behavior. Along that vein we also discovered coffee businesses that feature a segment of the population often left out, and that is Americans with disabilities. Our first interview in this series is with AOSA Coffee in Huntington Beach, CA. Keyana Hill owner of AOSA is black and her parents are from Belize, and her husband is white. They are the perfect couple to kick off this dialogue and exchange of viewpoints. Did being an interracial couple help or hinder their business? What were the community changes Key found, once she moved from her home in Riverside to Huntington Beach? We took a deep dive into some of the courageous conversations they both have had with their customers. There is a particularly poignant discussion with the wife of a policeman. Mike gives a very personal and unique perspective of being a white man, married to a black woman. Does this give him a special insight? And what kind of conversations does he get, and how can they be helpful to all of us. Lady Yum (Macarons and Mischief) 116 S. Washington St, Seattle, WA 98104 Episode 72  Endings and Entremets https://www.ladyyum.com Our last stop in season two led us to Seattle, and the very unique, one of a kind shop, featuring macarons, wine, beer, champagne, and great coffee. The shop is based on an original French cafe done in pinks and peach, with peacocks, furry chairs and chandeliers as accents. The owner Megan Wagstaff says Lady Yum is a perfect spot for a glass of champagne on a Wednesday afternoon. And yes they do have coffee! Our first guest was Michelle. Not being a coffee drinker, but lover of the aroma, she still knows how to make the perfect cup of coffee for her spouse. What magic ingredient does she add to his daily java and is it worth trying? When they moved to England these devoted dog owners faced a major dilemma, regarding their “children”. Quarantining of Molly, Fred, Zach and Bucky was the first challenge, and how do they get to England? Most creative answer ever ! It involves the high seas! And a “loophole”. Twilight, Seattle, and fan fiction, sometimes you just take a leap of faith. From Microsoft to Macaroons, Russell Wagstaff, husband and partner of owner Megan Wagstaff, left the corporate world to join his wife in this very successful venture. But how did he meet this future partner? Two people, 10 benches, possible budding romance.....and …nothing! Well something, but not your average dating time table. Listen to his story. There are movies that are made out of this scenario. Jeffery and Mitch, our next guests were first timers at Lady Yum, and it was our lucky day getting to hear their very different stories. “ I can tell you I don’t love or drink coffee but I’d be lying”. We had way too many guffaws, with this couple. They compliment each other in a very special way. Jeff works with nuclear fission and designs small modular nuclear reactors,( if he told me what he really did he would have to terminate me). Mitch changed careers and works with people in crisis, and loves it. His goal is to help his clients live independently. How did two opposites like this meet, and marry? Do you want the “official” or real story? That depends on who’s asking! When is the best time to come out to your mother? Why not while ice skating…no seriously, why not. We can tell you this, there was definitely a surprise that made him (and us) laugh. Imagine the scenario, you are on your way to North Dakota to meet the love of your life’s family, and most of them have been given very little notice of your relationship.Da..Da..Daaah. What is their biggest point of contention when it comes to having kids? Milwaukee, Pabst mansion, Aston Martin, and Lamborghini. What do these things all have in common? One WILD night. The stories they will (or will not) tell their children. Felicia, our final guest this week is one of our primary reasons for visiting this fantastic store near Pioneer Square in Seattle. How did she get from home schooling in the 100 plus acre woods of rural Pennsylvania, to urban Seattle? Was there culture shock? Not what you think! Just how did this beautiful (in every sense of the word) woman learn to not only traverse the United States, but end up navigating the world, and conquering a prestigious pastry school in France. Felicia creates, and adorns Seattle's most beautiful and delicious entremets. What you may ask is an entremet? You poor peasant let us enlighten and “entertain” you. Check out her Instagram page (@feliciayoder) to see these beautiful creations, and it will make you smile all day. Whimsical does not do them justice. And that’s without even tasting them. I always heard people say “that looks too good to eat” but never have I ever said this with any real conviction. You’ll find a visual vacation for your eyes on each page. (Ps good luck trying not to succumb to this delicacy) How did this “pastry terminator” end up needing to visit the doctor while in France?

When Covid-19 was just getting started, Geoff and  Annie were ahead of the game.  Although painful, they began to prepare for what they knew was coming their way. Let’s refresh your memory. This shop was formerly a 1900s era lumber yard. How do you open and keep social distancing on such a large property?  How do you maintain all your services, when you can't have a sit down experience? The cost of utilities hasn’t gone down just because people are quarantined... So how do you make the business sustainable? And what does a customer base who has also become a “fan” base have to do with your success? Enter, the most unique drive thru we’ve ever encountered! Visit our webpage to see what we mean. During this pandemic spread and recovery, business owners today are being asked not only to balance the books and deal with employees, but also to look out for the overall health of the community. Come with us this week as Annie and Geoff walk you through how they have successfully navigated this process. How do you keep the business going and not put customers at risk?  Who is reaching out to help them? If you want to help a small business, helping their community, this is your chance. Who, in their experience, is the one group suffering the most right now based on our current cashless commerce? With three children, homeschooling and running their business what does their spare time look like? So you want to help, and everybody needs coffee right? Special Report Covid Coffee Chronicles Real Estate and Covid-19 Episode 66 This week we interview Scott Wright, and Patti O’Rourke who you first met in season one episode 8, Keep On Juggling, at Little Ireland Coffee in Pacific MO. We thought who better to fill us in on the effects of Covid-19, and the realty market, than two professional self described nomad house flippers. This couple travels the country buying properties, remodeling, and then turning them around for a profit. What could possibly have changed during the time of a pandemic in the US. We caught up with them near White Sands in Alamogordo, New Mexico, to hear updates, insights, and life philosophy. You will not be disappointed. Eat your heart out Chip and Joanna Gaines, Has shelter in place changed their lives? Long before it was popular Scott and Patty's real estate business was conducted virtually, so how has the quarantine changed that? Do you have to feel guilty or justified if you actually like social distancing? Get the lowdown from this couple on how we may come out better when all is said and done. Could you buy a property if you never set foot in it? Today’s episode answers the question “how many old ladies' curtains and 30year old outdated carpets can you look at before you can pull the trigger. Wait ….but honey it's a dump!! It takes a lot of optimism to do what these two delightful people do. With a very specific skill set, tons of disinfectant, and no aversion to hard work, listen to what can be done while the rest of us are putting together puzzles. The Roadshow is all about coffee right? How does that fit into this week's program? If I told you McDonald s, pour over and “excellent” all in the same breath would you believe me? Well necessity is the mother of invention and Scott swears you cannot knock it “ until you’ve tried it” . Look for a blind taste test in an upcoming episode. Catch these two now while you still can, on this week's episode. Because once the quarantine has passed these adventurers will be back out on the road finding the next lamp, trailer, or fixer upper that will allow them to turn them a profit. For an in-depth look at her background listen to Episode 51 , Paws Jaws Enforcing Laws at River Roasters Coffee,in Florence OR . Our conversation at that time was pre Covid 19 pandemic, but her knowledge and practice in Herbalism was very prescient. Before we get to the issue of herbs, Covid-19, preventing illness and maintaining health you may have noticed that the music was not our normal surf guitar roadshow opening. We feel that music can be a great stress reducer, and thought we would lead off with Linda serenading you with the lovely sounds of her Indian flute amidst the backyard aviary. Whether you are in a backyard like ours surrounded by birds or your feet are dangling over the edge of the Grand Canyon at sunset you can find your Zen place through music. In addition to the world of herbology we feel music is also a great healer, both for the body, and the soul. Our guest this week Herbalist extraordinaire Candace Hunter tells us how Herbs can be part of your whole plan to keep yourself healthy, and try to prevent illness during this crazy time. How do you make your body less inviting to those invaders? ...and how do you limit the chance of contracting the virus in the first place, and use herbs to help get you through if infection occurs? This is where our herbalist expert comes in to give you her 5 points on how to get through, not just this time of Covid virus, but other illnesses as well. Get enough sleep, get regular physical activity, Get outside (we are outside for part of this episode) contact friends and loved ones, remember social distancing is not social isolation. Try to make a sustained effort to limit the time you stare at a screen….any screen. Put that music on, get out your favorite pair of headphones or speakers and really listen. Put on your favorite podcast (hint, hint) or listen to a book whatever gets you in the zone. How about Yoga, Tai Chi, meditation,... never done it ? Now’s the time to learn! Even if it is just for a few minutes, give yourself a chance to relax and recharge. Candace gives us instruction on how to" calm the inner toddler" . If you find yourself with more questions after listening to this episode, or want to learn more about the practice of herbs and  how it relates to health, we urge you to check out an upcoming informative event occurring this month. Special Report Covid Coffee Chronicles Episode 64 Healthcare Coverage in the Time of Corona White Dove Coffee,Flagstaff Arizona We first met Chris Rivera at White Dove Coffee in Flagstaff Arizona on season one, Episode 21 Peace Microsoft and the Weirdo Net. For the correlation to coffee listen to this episode to hear his whole background story. Chris is an agent for Aflac, an American insurance company and largest provider of supplemental insurance in the United States. During this pandemic he is maintaining his status as a health insurance advisor for small and local businesses in this region. You can imagine the calls that he is getting now in this time of Covid-19. One question however seems to be paramount on most peoples minds....Am I covered. Previously Chris met with clients, often in person, to discuss their healthcare needs and give guidance for specific coverage after a job loss. Listen along as we discuss these issues, and short term disability, with the specter of pandemic overhead. With this pandemic it seems like everyone knows, or is the someone now in the unemployment line. How has this affected his business, and what is the correlation to disability? He is still meeting with clients, but now, like most of the work force it is virtual, and from his home office. Did we get a warning about this “plague” as Chris calls it... how long did we have to get ready, and what did we do to prepare for the fight with our “invisible enemy”. In this new kind of warfare what is the ammunition and how can we be the “Rosie the riveter of our time. It used to be that the military were the only ones fighting, not with this pandemic. Just ask the doctors, nurses, respiratory therapists PA's,grocery store clerks and garbage men. There are still strategists ( the medical and scientific community) and then there are an awful lot of foot soldiers like you and me, carrying out the day to day fight through hand washing, social distancing, and simply staying at home. Can you really escape by retreating to your cabin or vacation home in an underpopulated area? How was the rural health system doing in this country before this all started and what do you think is happening now? If ever a Dylan lyric fits, it’s now, “ the times they are a changin” my friend.

They are the owners of Ember Goods Coffee store in Olympia WA. We last interviewed Nick and Bonita on season 2 episode 56 If You Give a Mouse a Hairdryer. This week we have all four of the owners present on a conference call to update us on how they are surviving the pandemic. With Nick's talent as an accomplished woodworker, and professional photographers Login and Bonita, they transformed a dark and dingy tattoo parlor into a Pacific Northwest inspired  original one of a kind store. This location draws artisans of all types. Think of a scaled down community centered REI with leather couches, local art, books, and beauty products including beard wax! I purchased Bawston & Tucker Solid Cologne  while we were there but I am sadly running out! OK guys are you listening?  I am running out! As far as their clothing line goes, soft, comfortable and stylish with a North Woods flair, what else could you ask for!  Can you tell I love this store? Now how about the coffee! Small batch roasted in Morton WA. Whatever the specialty drink you may want, they will make it for you. Don’t leave without trying my favorite beverage, with turmeric, ginger, honey, cinnamon, clove, hemp milk and espresso. We tried to weedle the recipe out of them, but trade secrets and all no such luck. Currently you can’t come in to order your favorite drink but you can still support Ember Goods. In order to keep their business afloat Ember Goods enlisted the help of  Kickstarter to raise money. Within a range of pledges the public could receive everything from coffee beans, merchandise, art, photo and wedding shoots, night stays at an adorable B & B,and even  a day spent in Nick’s wood shop learning how to make his signature piece. Fortunately with 207 donors they have now reached their goal.  So now you need to go to https://www.Embergoods.com and  check out their available products/merchandise and coffee for online orders. When this pandemic is over stop in and say hi to Logan,Bonita, Nick and Jessica, from the Cross Country Coffee Roadshow. And did I mention I am running out of my Bawston & Tucker Solid Cologne?

Special Report- Covid Coffee Chronicles Campaigning in the Time of Corona Episode 62 http://johnkiehne.com/contact/ How do you run for political office in a time when shelter in place and stay at home orders are in effect? At the end of March  we spoke to John Kiehne who is running for state representative in Missouri.  Did this musician, turned politician (#musipolitician) have to reinvent the wheel when the Covid-19 outbreak occurred?  Does campaigning in “Dollar Store” regions differ from more populated urban areas? What's a politician do when he/she can’t attend the tried and true fried chicken dinners, and other public functions that go along with campaigning? Shaking hands and kissing babies are currently a thing of the past. Will they ever return? Thinking outside the box is something John does well! Old School? New cutting edge tech? whats the best choice?. How about all of the above. What venues are available for a "live" town hall and how creative do politicians need to be?  From phones to internet and how does a simple great photo enter in?  Fundraising  and broadband availability can pose another problem.  Does making eye contact with another person make you susceptible to the virus, and other observations, from this "musipolitician”. The new realities have forced everyone to change their routines including nursing home visitations, and in John’s situation, planning a funeral for his father in law, and what essential part did technology and Zoom play. Rural health care in the time of the pandemic, differs from urban centers. Good discussion on the issues associated with people who leave the cities and retreat to their rural "cabin" in search of refuge and "relief" from the sheltering in place and quarantining rules.  Our condolences to John and his wife Michelle, on the loss of her father. Discover what gritty actually means, and feast your eyes on the oldest & hippest town in Oregon. Our first guest, Betsy Wentworth, owner of Coffee Girl has the best two word answer for “how do you keep employees”. She found out just how loyal her employees were when catastrophe struck. What would you do with your business if you woke up in a hospital bed and saw relatives from around the US standing at your bedside. Coffee Girl has mouth watering pastries, and scones that attract locals every day.  And why would a friend travel a long distance just to make her scones. People may disagree about what makes a good scone, but Betsy’s answer is definitive. There were three lessons she learned while attending coffee school in Portland and says number three was the most important. What was it, and why does it make Coffee Girl so successful. As a twenty something her car broke down in Prescott Arizona, and how did that incident eventually lead her to Astoria. Monica left a position in the medical arena to become a barista, and her explanation probably won't surprise anyone. What happens to your son when you take him to a Warp concert (in utero) ? A barista at Coffee Girl, Monica explains the consequences of that action, that occurred 15 years later. If you are an avid reader Jim Keryan offers some sage advice to authors ( and for that matter anyone) who want to write or to start reading a 10 volume series, on anything! A storm with 140 mph winds blows down a power line, and you witness someone trying to pick it up.What did he do, and what happened to the good Samaritan? Ask Jim how so many eclectic characters ended up where the west runs out of room. Alyssa Ponferroda journeyed with her father, back to his home in the Philippines. How did the locals know she was “ American”, and are the driving laws there just a suggestion? How about the art of bartering, did pursed lips and chin gestures work for her?  Were her preconceived notions about the Filipino people, and her "roots" country, enforced or challenged once she got there? Although an American citizen, her culinary heritage remains strong. When a non-Filipino loves a food, (dinuguan), not knowing what it is, should she be told the main ingredients?  Or maybe keep that to yourself! Ella Bellissimo says, for her, the less like coffee something tastes the more she likes it! That doesn’t distract from her talents as a great..... barista? When her parents purchased a house whose owners had died, they discovered it was haunted. How did they know, and were they afraid? Even though her dad was OK with ghosts, Ella likes her ghosts to have a little more gusto. Did they even discuss bringing in an Exorcist? Don’t worry, the previous owners weren’t murdered...or were they? LUCKY LAGER AND THE SPICY WENCH Episode 53 Pirate Coffee Company. 10 Vista St, Depoe Bay, OR 97341 While traveling north on the 101 we encountered the charming town of DePoe Bay, Oregon. The base of Pirate Coffee Company, the whale watching capital of the Oregon coast, and home to the world’s smallest navigable harbor. Here we met owners Shae Palmer and her sister Bree Boaz. There is more to this family than we would have liked to cover, but we ran out of time! These sisters give the phrase “family ties” new meaning. If you want to be a member of this clan you better have a business plan….everyone works, even Shae’s children. Mom and dad live upstairs and are “retired” but still make the bakery component of this store out of this world. Made from scratch and NO RECIPES. If you go, ask for the blueberry cinnamon coffee cake. They don’t have it? don't be surprised, Mom makes whatever the spirit moves her to make. So do not ask what the special will be tomorrow, just show up and be amazed! They roast their own beans and you can get their great coffee online. Our first guest Shae, at the tender age of 12 trained for the Olympics in water polo. At 13 she won the US Nationals. At 17 she was the first female to receive a full scholarship for water polo and became the NCAA all American. What then happened in her senior year that changed her life’s trajectory. Once you hear how Shae’s journey led her to Depoe Bay you won’t be surprised. From engineer and software developer in Silicon Valley, to coffee shop owner in Texas. See how family has influenced her decision making process. How many horses does one have to go through to get the “right one”? What one very devoted mother went through to get her daughter a horse perfect for barrel racing. Was the horse a gift? Shae should get parent of the year for teachable moments. Her children may call her a busy body, but do you know what that means? All is not what it seems. Sisters Bree,( a former Bank manager), and Amber (former chiropractor) also came back to Depoe Bay from Texas. What are their roles in the coffee business? Bree shared the secret of why Pirate Coffee Co is the most popular coffee shop in DePoe Bay, and the answer may have something to do with Switzerland! A man walked into Pirate Coffee Co, ordered his coffee, and left without paying. Today that man and Bree are married! How does that work? Did he ever pay for his coffee? Bree’s discussion about children both the 2 and 4 legged kind will leave you with a new found insight into wanting to be a parent, when sometimes things don’t work out as you planned. The answer is heartwarming, and amazing. Coming to grips with the fact that you may never have children is hard and Bree shared their very personal story. A story that may lift hearts, and give hope to people facing the same obstacle. Our next interview with 11 year old Justice will explain it all. Moving from a state with multiple options for schooling to DePoe Bay where school was one hour away (with no bus service) what were the options? And how has that worked out. Save time for helping out in the store and contributing to the coffee menu! Not only does he have a keen sense of humor, his very articulate responses to some of our questions may make you rethink traditional education. Justice explained the nuances of online homeschooling. Can he wear his pajamas to class? His 20 year projection may, or may not include taking over the coffee business, becoming a coder, or an archer on horseback. The possibilities are endless. You will thoroughly enjoy our conversation with this youngest barista, who just wants to focus on his goals. Some people may drive a “couple” of miles for a great roast. Our next guests,Judy and Eugene hold our podcast distance record. What makes Pirate Coffee so special you fill your gas take to get here? What do you do with a high school boy who “just keeps showing up at your house”? Call the police or get married!

From LA to Florence Oregon, Melanie Heard talks about her journey from tap dancing at the age of two with the original choreographer of Kids of the Kingdom at Disneyland to a full scholarship with the DC Kirov Ballet, and then on to the Joffrey Ballet Training Program. Why would she give up a fifty thousand dollar a year job to take on all the risk in opening up a theater of performing arts for kids? Her answer won’t surprise you after hearing her background story, and the generous nature of this wonderful small town. Is there anything wrong with not having everything at your fingertips? For people living in small towns the answer may be as simple as a gorgeous drive along Oregon's coast to a larger town isn’t all that bad. Janet Shelton our next guest, says stepping onto Bay Street Waterfront is like being on vacation! Step out on to the back deck at River Roasters and experience the flowing river, gorgeous bridge, seal watching, all while sipping your favorite beverage. This guest knows the full story. Following a unique injury, we have never had on the podcast, her doctor told he that her “ professional athletic “ career would be over! Remember the days when a bus driver may have taken you home, on a daily basis in his car! What? For Rich Litchfield, if coffee is the second best reason for coming to River Roasters, what is the first? That was evident as soon as we drove into this town of 8,000 on the banks of the Siuslaw River. What an authentic gem, and a secret we’d like to keep to ourselves.  Unfortunately we feel, for our listeners sake, compelled to share our find with anyone who may be looking for the perfect getaway, a place to raise a family, or retire. This former mechanics shop has been turned into one of the most inviting, rustic, friendly coffee shops on the PCH. Looking down the street at the Historic Old Town district seems like a movie set, complete with ornamental street lights, and benches to sit on and people, or seal watch. You can stroll even further down the peer and watch the river boats plying the waters. Facing the river across the street you will encounter dozens of shops, galleries, and farm to table restaurants. Our first guest, Kathy Stone, owner of the once Siuslaw Coffee, now River Roasters was dreading becoming an empty nester, (even before she became one). She worried about how to fill her time, and took a leap of faith when Siuslaw Coffee became available. She purchased this historic building, and with her own personal touch, the rest, as they say is history. When in her twenties, she went to Europe with her sister, and they split up. Her advice, when directed to “a friend's house” to spend the night in Belgium... wear a bodysuit. But what did she do when invited a second time to sleep in someone else's room? How about the third time, and did she learn any lessons? Ken Larson, a retired police officer gives sound advice when you are first being introduced to your newborn son. The list goes on and on. After listening to Justin it’s easy to understand his passion, for cooking and the community. His life has not been without its trials however, and this soul barring interview will give a glimpse into a complex and amazing man. I think we only scratched the surface. How do you say goodbye to a beloved friend, or anyone who may be suffering from a terminal illness, or dementia. Justin’s answer is heartfelt, and simple, “It takes nothing out of your day to say a kind word” . A poem from Walt Whitman for our literary latte segment completes this in-depth interview. Valerie L VanCleve-Neros  who said yes to a job offer, without knowing what is was! She met Justin and said it has to fun with him in charge! Would you move to a seaside town and then complain about the noise boats make in the harbor? Her thoughts will make you think twice before you choose the perfect community for your next move. Give her a jeep, or computer to build, and she is happy as a clam, but for the love of God, don’t ask her to do crafts! Her advice, regarding doing things outside your comfort zone should make us all think twice before quitting or not even trying something that makes us sweat.  Valerie’s tenacity will leave you with a smile, and you will understand why her husband calls her a Goddess. Where does an 11 year old girl go when her parents can’t parent? how does it affect your life, and who was the one to step up and take care of her? Johnny Mathisen Marketplace Liaison has developed an interesting way to plan for the Great American SmokeHouse menu. First and foremost, find out what the catch of the day is. Trying to snag him for an interview was not easy,  since cooking was just one of his myriad of jobs. The question we had of Johnny after learning about a bet he had lost with an experienced hunter, is why oh why... and did we hear right...eyeball?. Be prepared hilarious and somewhat gross, but the kind of story you will share. Put together flames, smoke, handle-less cast iron skillet, and a few week old inedible material to begin with, and what do you have? Does the abbreviation PU ring a bell. We had trouble completing this interview... but got through it with everybody's favorite tune...My Rifle My Pony and Me! Confused ?

The advice Ray gives to his children is spot on, and heartwarming. You may be surprised by the unintended consequences of legalized marijuana, and how it destabilized the area. This is worth a serious discussion in some parts of the country. Lindsey Nash, a five year veteran barista has some interesting insights into the world of coffee. A bartender before becoming a barista, her thoughts on serving customers will make you smile. Caffeinated, or intoxicated. That is the question. Knowing the value of your product (in this case coffee) is much different than knowing how to market it. Great story about a love and knowledge of coffee, with no head for business. She learned this painful lesson first hand while employed at her previous job. Product knowledge and promotion along with business skills, it is hard to succeed without both! She is taking that advice and applying it to her new burgeoning business. From a pair of earrings to jewelry maker, she lets nothing stand in her way. Visit her store here https://www.etsy.com/shop/AlchemyGemsDesigns In addition to her expert skills behind the espresso machine, and advanced jewelry creations, you will thoroughly enjoy her heartwarming family story. You will be glad you listened to his honest life tale, that truly makes our podcast unique(if we do say so ourselves) and the second epiphany will make you laugh. Mike Anderson, barista, musician, and open mic host has words of wisdom that will have you nodding your head in agreement, and applauding what you may wish would happen to some karaoke divas. For one, struggling with shared custody the store had unintended consequences. For her partner was it a parallel universe, or a continuation of life from a WWll mother? What she discovered in old letters to her mother surprised and perhaps inspired her into the coffee business.
