The Culture Journalist is a podcast about culture in the age of platforms. Episodes drop every other week, but if you want the full experience — including bonus episodes and our eternal parasocial friendship — we recommend signing up for a paid subscription.Paid subscribers also get access to CUJOPLEX, a private Discord server and online hangout zone where independent culture fans who like talking about things like creative economies, media theory, current events, and the future of entertainment and journalism can congregate, share links, and talk about the news of the day.Today we explore how many of the habits and customs we associate with American bourgeois life — religiously reading the Sunday Times, buying organic produce, building your entire identify around excelling at a career you love, etc. — stem from one generation in particular. Friends, we're talking about the yuppies, that notoriously status-obsessed, hyper-educated cohort of young urban professionals who came to cultural prominence in the '80s and '90s, setting off a series of transformations in our cities, media, and consumer culture that we're still witnessing to this day. It's easy to see the Boomer worldview as a reflection of the fact that they had it much easier than us Millennials, economically speaking. But a new book called Triumph of the Yuppies: America, the Eighties, and the Creation of an Unequal Nation, by Philadelphia journalist and author Tom McGrath, subtly challenges that idea, reframing the yuppie obsession with money, achievement, and unimpeachable good taste as a response to the rough economic headwinds of the 1970s and '80s. Along the way, it explores how yuppiedom was equally a reaction to suburban post-war monoculture — and perhaps most perplexingly, a kind of impossible attempt to reconcile a newfound love of capitalism with the egalitarian values of the hippie era.Tom joins us to discuss the yuppie origin story and the historical factors that rerouted a generation from protesting the Vietnam War to working on Wall Street. We get into who — and what — the yuppies were rebelling against, and how their emphasis on not just consumption, but consuming the right things, laid the blueprint for everything from urban gentrification, to contemporary food culture, to the news and television we consume. We also talk about whether or not the yuppie still exists — perhaps in the form of Millennials? — and, of course, where Trump, then and now, fits into all of this.Purchase Triumph of the Yuppies. Tom McGrath is a composer-lyricist from Tipperary, Ireland. His background is in classical and Irish folk music. He has a master's degree in contemporary composition from Trinity College, Dublin. His musicals have been performed in the Camden Fringe, London and Smock Alley Theatre, Dublin. Tom works part-time as an NHS doctor. He is a member of the Book, Music & Lyrics workshop and Mercury Musical Developments. Amy Clair Tasker is a theatre maker and musical theatre writer. She works with her own company Pinecone Performance Lab, and with The Cockpit, where she produces the Voila! Europe Theatre Festival and the Theatre Maker artist development programme. Amy has a BA in Drama from the University of California, Irvine. She is a member of the Book, Music & Lyrics workshop, Mercury Musical Developments, and Musical Theatre Network. The Queen is Mad is a musical tragedy inspired by the true story of “Joanna la Loca.” The elder sister of Catherine of Aragon, Joanna came to inherit the throne of Castile in 1504 – but her father and husband conspired to usurp her power by claiming she was mad and locking her away. Against the brutality and fanaticism of 16th century Spain, the show charts Joanna's quest for freedom and control of her own life. With shades of Passion and Wicked, this chamber musical fuses a contemporary classical score with a tale of power, betrayal and rage.

För fyrtio år sedan utropade tidningen Newsweek 1984 som ”The Year of the Yuppie”.

This is: 200 COP in MI: Interpreting Reinforcement Learning, published by Neel Nanda on January 10, 2023 on The AI Alignment Forum. This is the ninth post in a sequence called 200 Concrete Open Problems in Mechanistic Interpretability. Start here, then read in any order. If you want to learn the basics before you think about open problems, check out my post on getting started. Look up jargon in my Mechanistic Interpretability Explainer I'll make another post every 1-2 days, giving a new category of open problems. If you want to read ahead, check out the draft sequence here! Motivating papers: Acquisition of Chess Knowledge in AlphaZero, Understanding RL Vision Disclaimer: My area of expertise is language model interpretability, not reinforcement learning. These are fairly uninformed takes and I'm sure I'm missing a lot of context and relevant prior work, but this is hopefully more useful than nothing! Motivation Reinforcement learning is the study of how to create agents - models that can act in an environment and form strategies to get high reward. I think there are a lot of deep confusions we have about how RL systems work and how they learn, and that trying to reverse engineer these systems could teach us a lot! Some high-level questions about RL that I'd love to get clarity on: How much do RL agents learn to actually model their environment vs just being a big bundle of learned heuristics? In particular, how strong a difference is there between model-free and model-based systems here? Do models explicitly reason about their future actions? What would a circuit for this even look like? What are the training dynamics of an RL system like? What does its path to an eventual solution look like? A core hard part about training RL systems is that the best strategies tend to require multi-step plans, but taking the first step only makes sense if you know that you'll do the next few steps correctly. What does it look like on a circuit level when a model successfully explores and finds a new and better solution? How much do the lessons from mechanistic interpretability transfer? Can we even reverse engineer RL systems at all? How well do our conceptual frameworks for thinking about networks transfer to RL? Are there any things that clearly break, or new confusions that need to be grappled with? I expect training dynamics to be a particularly thorny issue - rather than learning a fixed data distribution, whether an action is a good idea depends on which actions the model will take in future. Further, I think that it's fairly likely that, whatever AGI looks like, it involves a significant component of RL. And that training human-level and beyond systems to find creative solutions to optimise some reward is particularly likely to result in dangerous behaviour. Eg, where models learn the instrumental goals to seek power or to deceive us, or just more generally learn to represent and pursue sophisticated long term goals and to successfully plan towards these. But as is, much alignment work here is fairly speculative and high level, or focused on analysing model behaviour and forming inferences. I would love to see this grounded in a richer understanding of what is actually going on inside the system. Some more specific questions around alignment that I'm keen to get clarity on: Do models actually learn internal representations of goals? Can we identify these? I'm particularly interested in settings with robust capabilities but misgeneralised goals - what's going on here? Can we find any evidence for or against inner optimisation concerns? How much are models actually forming plans internally? Can we identify this? Do models ever simulate other agents? (Especially in a multi-agent setting) A work I find particularly inspiring here is Tom McGrath et al's work, Acquisition of Chess Knowled...

Paul meets Tom McGrath, author of Unspoken. Tom McGrath never noticed the odd gaps in the stories of his parents' lives before he was born; it was only many years after they died that he uncovered the unspoken truths, which did so much to explain the people they had been. Here he tells the incredible true story of his father's conscription into the British Army, his escape from a prisoner-of-war camp in Poland, his daring journey across Europe and subsequent recapture - and the devastating news that awaited him in England. Tom's research also led him to discover that his mother also carried a heartbreaking secret. In writing this book Tom not only recreated his father's nail-biting escape but also embarked on a journey of his own to reconnect with previously unknown family members. Unspoken pieces together an extraordinarily rare tale that encompasses memoir, family history, and two parallel stories that were almost lost for ever.

Summary Mechanistic interpretability aims to explain what a neural network has learned at a nuts-and-bolts level. What are the fundamental primitives of neural network representations? What basic objects should we use to describe the operation of neural networks mechanistically? Previous mechanistic descriptions have used individual neurons or their linear combinations to understand the representations a network has learned. But there are clues that neurons and their linear combinations are not the correct fundamental units of description - directions cannot describe how neural networks use nonlinearities to structure their representations. Moreover, many instances of individual neurons and their combinations are polysemantic (i.e. they have multiple unrelated meanings). Polysemanticity makes interpreting the network in terms of neurons or directions challenging since we can no longer assign a specific feature to a neural unit. In order to find a basic unit of description that doesn't suffer from these problems, we zoom in beyond just directions to study the way that piecewise linear activation functions (such as ReLU) partition the activation space into numerous discrete polytopes. We call this perspective the ‘polytope lens'. Although this view introduces new challenges, we think they are surmountable and that more careful consideration of the impact of nonlinearities is necessary in order to build better high-level abstractions for a mechanistic understanding of neural networks. The polytope lens makes concrete predictions about the behavior of neural networks, which we evaluate through experiments on both convolutional image classifiers and language models. Specifically, we show that polytopes can be used to identify monosemantic regions of activation space (while directions are not in general monosemantic) and that the density of polytope boundaries reflect semantic boundaries. We also outline a vision for what mechanistic interpretability might look like through the polytope lens. Introduction How should we carve a neural network at the joints? Traditionally, mechanistic descriptions of neural circuits have been posed in terms of neurons, or linear combinations of neurons also known as ‘directions'. Describing networks in terms of these neurons and directions has let us understand a surprising amount about what they've learned (Cammarata et al., 2020). But these descriptions often possess undesirable properties - such as polysemanticity and inability to account for nonlinearity - which suggest to us that they don't always carve a network at its joints. If not neurons or directions, then what should be the fundamental unit of a mechanistic description of what a neural network has learned? Ideally, we would want a description in terms of some object that throws away unnecessary details about the internal structure of a neural network while simultaneously retaining what's important. In other words, we'd like a less ‘...
