"But if science tells you that something's impossible, and it happens anyway, it means one of two things. Either the science is wrong, or it's a scam.” Welcome back to another episode of Made You Think! Today, we're exploring the 3 Body Problem TV series on Netflix, inspired by Cixin Liu's acclaimed novel. Listen in as we discuss Season 1's adaptation from book to screen, analyzing character shifts, narrative changes, and the portrayal of scientific concepts. If you enjoyed The Three-Body Problem book series or consider yourself a sci-fi fanatic, this one is for you! We cover a wide range of topics including: What narrative changes and expansions were made for the TV adaptation The show's production costs compared to Game of Thrones How the creators translated the scientific aspects from the book series Our main praises and critiques of the show Book or series - is there a clear winner? And much more. Please enjoy, and make sure to follow Nat, Neil, and Adil on Twitter and share your thoughts on the episode. Today, we're covering the TV series based on one of our previous reads, The Three-Body Problem by Cixin Liu. Go check out the episode on the book if you haven't already! We dive into our overall thoughts on Season 1 and how it measured up to the book. (4:09) *Spoiler alert!* If you haven't watched the show or read the book series, we suggest you do that first before continuing this episode. We talk a bit about the depth, or lack of depth, of the characters in the book and TV series. (6:55) Neil talks about the pivotal scene in Episode 5 that changed his mind about the show, and how the shows portrayal of something can be completely different than what you had pictured in your head. (9:38) From character shifts to the order of events, how did the show differ from the book series?  (13:48) How the creators of the show had a unique challenge of keeping the intriguing scientific elements from the book series in the show while maintaining a pace that keeps the viewers interested. (15:43) The cost per episode in 3BP was higher than the final season of Game of Thrones. Which aspects of the show and scenes may have taken up the largest pieces of the budget? (21:24) We talk about the relationships between the heroes of the books and how they're all close friends. It sets you up to think there might be a happy ending... but is there? (25:36) Nat, Neil, and Adil share their thoughts on a character addition that wasn't in the books.  (28:45) From Blood Meridian to The First World War, many books have some grotesque elements to it. It's interesting to see how authors capture the emotions and events from something that actually happened and put them into a book.  (32:55) Our thoughts on the scene where the universe blinks, and how it was shown in the movie vs. in the book.  (34:50) We list off one major criticism of the show, as well as many things that we felt the producers did a great job on. (39:03) How effective was the show in portraying scientific aspects from the book? We share our final thoughts 3BP Season 1. (42:10) That concludes this episode! Make sure to check out our episode on The Three-Body Problem and check out the Netflix series if you haven't already. We highly recommend it! Next up is Einstein's Dreams by Alan Lightman. Finally, we've come to the smoking hot ridiculously-convoluted-best-friend-betrayal-so-you-can-look-baller-at-a-party of time travel, "Primer." Often exalted as one of the best time travel movies out there, "Primer" is a 2004 indie film written and directed by, and starring, Shane Carruth. In a big way, it's one of the most technically exacting time travel movies, and it's often thought of as being pretty difficult to follow as a result. But that's why we're here! As always, you're going to want to make sure you've watched the movie before listening, because we're going to spoil the hell out of it. We'd also recommend you watch it more than once. Like, at least twice. And the second time, probably you should turn on subtitles, because it'll help you catch some snatches of dialogue that are essential to the plot but easily missed. Another quick note: by now you'll have seen the "Part 1" up there in the headline. Ridiculously convoluted as "Primer" is known to be -- believe us when we say it's one of the movie's charms -- we wound up recording an insane, double-wide near 2.5 hours of episode for this one. As such, we've split Episode 14 into two parts, hopefully making it more digestible for you, our beloved listeners. Both episodes are live simultaneously, so if you're looking for Episode 14, Part 2, this is your link. Without further adieu, listen to Episode 14, Part 1! We enjoyed this handy plot rundown from qntm.org. We consider this one pretty damn close to a definitive read on the movie (although we have a couple spots where we take issue, as mentioned in the episode). This rundown is also great for seeing key time travel moves and drawing clear lines from lines of dialogue and character motivations to how they play out in the film. In this episode: It's "Primer" Time The Plot The Narrator The Machine and How It Works Day One Day Two and How All This Time Travel Nonsense Works The One-Time Use Only Fallacy (That Isn't One) The Boss Discussion Attic Birds Day 3 What Aaron Bleeding Is All About Oh Yeah That Party That's Actually Integral to the Plot Rachel and Thomas Granger Day 4 The Cell Phone and Its Significance Abe's Plan Tom Granger Appears and What the Hell That's All About Day 1(a) Aaron's Lengthy, Not Super-Clear Explanation Aaron Prime (the Timeline Original), Aaron-2 (the First Time Traveler) and Aaron-3 (the second time traveler) In the next episode of Paradox, we'll be hitting up some magical time travel with "Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban" (movie not book), in order to lead into the newly released script, "Harry Potter and the Cursed Child."

Two movies. Three people. One rambling conversation. Each film is our first time watching them. We often go off-topic. Under the Skin is a 2013 science fiction film directed by Jonathan Glazer and written by Glazer and Walter Campbell, loosely based on the 2000 novel by Michel Faber. It stars Scarlett Johansson as an otherworldly woman who preys on men in Scotland. Upstream Color is a 2013 American experimental science fiction film written, directed, produced by, and starring Shane Carruth. The film is the second feature directed by Carruth, following his 2004 debut Primer. It stars Amy Seimetz, Carruth, Andrew Sensenig, and Thiago Martins. In the film, the behaviors of two people are unwittingly affected by a complex parasite that has a three-stage life cycle.

Our time traveling series continues with a low-budget cult flick:  Primer.  Writer-director Shane Carruth delivers a dense, difficult, and intriguing little film.  It's been hailed by some as the most accurate depiction of time travel in cinema history.  Sean, Travis, and I break it all down in greater detail. “Then there were days, good days, when by anyone's judgment they would have to be considered clever.” The Distinguished Professors get serious with their time travel with 2004's Primer, an intense independent cinematic experience involving 20-something engineers in suburban Texas entering and leaving a storage facility at various times. Topics discussed include the $7000 budget, dilation, the lack of Steven Johnson's “red flashing arrows,” what makes an art house or indie movie “good,” the 40-year-old expiration date for engineers(?!), Power Rangers' repackaging of old episodes as a time travel season, bottle episodes, the advantages and drawbacks of naturalistic sound in a movie, the deliberate mysteriousness of Granger, the problem of the murkiness of the initial project, Abe is the smart and careful time-traveler, Shane Carruth's control over the movie as writer/ director/ composer, the failsafe machine, the shocking arrivals of violence at various points, our admissions that we cheated in watching review videos, realistic limits on meeting your past self, contrast with the time travel in Avengers: Endgame, the indeterminate punched-ness of Joseph Platts and speculation about when Aaron goes bad, more speculation about when they discover that changes can occur, Abe once more wins Clink's seal of time traveler approval, more defecation on Whedon and the role of ego in directors, kit-bashed time machines, saying hello to Ma Clink, and plans for the future. One-man-band Shane Carruth covers all the bases (yet again) with a mind-bending and disturbing take on mind-control, loss of identity, and substance use. Ideas filched from Philip K. Dick made semi-digestible sit well with anyone who's awoken to a life lost to the ether of the sleeping mind.

Two Nerds Sitting on a Couch

Two Nerds was contacted by a friend of ours recently who put in some requests for podcat subjects. On the list were some titles we'd already tackled, like Another Earth and Shane Carruth's Primer, and some we hadn't yet, like Kubrick's 2001: A Space Odyssey. This got us thinking about movies which are mindbenders: often high concept, maybe a little arthouse, and definitely out to blow your mind. Science fiction can be especially fruitful for mindbending, as it allows the artist latitude to mess with reality itself, to present extreme circumstances and and mine them for their philosophical possibilities. Rather than retread old ground, we took as our subject two mindbenders we hadn't discussed yet: 2001: A Space Odyssey, and Shane Carruth's second film, Upstream Color. (We also watched 2010, but I wouldn't call that one a mindbender.) We definitely make mention of Aronofsky's The Fountain a bunch, as that's a mindbender both of us keep coming back to (even though objectively it's a pretty infuriating movie?) Either way, prepare to have your mind blown.

Dave Sifry coined the phrase, "the Magic Middle." Shane Carruth shoots sometimes on inexpensive gear. I and Jamie mentioned the Red camera and Black Magic Camera. Julian Velard used PledgeMusic to fundraise for a recent album. Jack Conte of Pomplamoose explained how poorly YouTube pays even with massive traffic in his talk at XOXO 2013. Louis CK solid a concert for $5 and changed the economics of that forever. I spoke to Adam Cornelius and Chris Higgins about their movies The Tetris Masters (2011) and Coined (upcoming) in last week's episode. Lisanne Pajot is the co-creator of Indie Game: The Movie. Aziz Ansari handled his comedy concert with VHX. Kickstarter has started to produce reported features on creators, starting with this terrific one about Max Tempkin, friend of the show and one of the creators of Cards Against Humanity. Jamie and I compared notes about the movie Stripped, which used iTunes, VHX, and Google Play during its launch. The creators of that film were guests on this podcast a few weeks ago. The redemption process for the Veronica Mars movie was kind of a mess, but it all got worked out. They relied on Ultraviolet. VHX posted a case study called "Stripped and the Power of Bonus Content."
