On this episode of Sound Speed Action, we review Mayday, the new 80s style action comedy on Apple TV starring Ryan Reynolds and Kenneth Branagh, made in the vein of Midnight Run, 48 Hrs, and Red Heat. It's a lot of fun, it knows exactly what it is, and Branagh's Nikolai, a former KGB hermit who worships one bootleg VHS of Top Gun, turns out to be a genuine badass. I am not kidding. I did not see that coming.But I keep telling myself the two guys who made it are cursed. Jonathan Goldstein and John Francis Daley made Dungeons and Dragons: Honor Among Thieves, which everybody who saw it loved and Hollywood still called a disappointment. Then they made Mayday, finished it in the spring of 2024, and it sat on a shelf for two years before going straight to your phone. Cursed is not the right word, though. I found a better one, and I'll give it to you at the end of the episode, right after I tell you what they're making next.What We Cover:Nikolai Owns One Movie: A character set in 1987 who worships a film from 1986. Peter stumbles into this whole operation, almost drowns, gets yelled at by Tony Stark, and still decides, “I'm gonna fix this myself.” Bold strategy. Things escalate quickly when peter goes on a field trip to D.C. which Peter agreed to go to to follow the weapons. He ends up getting trapped in a storage area overnight. He finds out a piece of tech that Ned has is a bomb. So when he finally get out, he rushes to the Washington monument to save his friends. Back in New York, he finds out the weapons dealer is going to be on the Staten Island Ferry. It's a disaster and Tony finally takes away the suit like a disappointed dad. Peter's superhero grounded. He tries to go back to being a normal kid, even asks his crush Liz to homecoming — which is adorable until he shows up at her house and realizes her dad is THE Vulture. And he realizes that Peter is Spider-Man. He give Peter a very calm and terrifying threat, and heads off for one last big heist. Peter decides to ditch the dance to try to stop the heist, but with only his homemade suit available, He gets buried under rubble, has a full “I am Spider-Man” moment, gets back up, and stops the plane from being stolen… barely. We get a final showdown on a beach, Vulture suit goes boom, but Peter saves him anyway, cuz that's just the type of guy he is. Toomes goes to jail, Liz moves away, and Tony offers Peter a full-time Avengers gig… which he turns down, choosing to stay your friendly neighborhood Spider-Man. The movie ends with Peter getting his suit back… just in time for May Parker to walk in and discover EVERYTHING. With the last feature film being Star Trek Beyond in 2016, there's been little movement on both the Chris Pine-led series and new takes on the universe, but this new film will move forward unconnected to anything done previously.Glen Powell in The Running Man was a favored first place winner at the box office this weekend, but was ousted by the sleight of hand of Now You See Me: Now You Don't, the third movie in that franchise. Now You See Me racked up a global $75 million opening, while The Running Man limped across the finish line at $28 million. This marks Powell's first big box office miss, when compared to openings for Twisters, Top Gun: Maverick, and Anybody But You, but the action film did have to compete against Predator: Badlands, which is holding strong at the box office still.Nintendo and Illumination have released the first trailer for Super Mario Galaxy, the follow up to 2023's hit The Super Mario Brothers Movie. The film is currently set for release in May of 2027.Peacock has renewed Twisted Metal for a third season, with David Reed taking over as showrunner and executive producer following Michael Jonathan Smith's exit. Reed has previously been a producer on series like Supernatural and The Boys.

Episode 186!? This week we're switching things up and giving your thoughts on The Flash! The Flash is a 2023 American superhero film based on the DC character of the same name. Produced by Warner Bros. Pictures, DC Studios, Double Dream, and the Disco Factory, and distributed by Warner Bros. Pictures, it is the 13th installment in the DC Extended Universe (DCEU). The film is directed by Andy Muschietti from a screenplay by Christina Hodson and stars Ezra Miller as Barry Allen / The Flash alongside Sasha Calle, Michael Shannon, Ron Livingston, Maribel Verdú, Kiersey Clemons, Antje Traue, and Michael Keaton. In the film, Barry travels back in time to prevent his mother's death, which brings unintended consequences. The development of a film based on The Flash began in the late 1980s, with multiple writers and directors attached to the project through 2014. The film was then redeveloped as a part of the DCEU, with Miller cast as the title character. Multiple directors were attached to the film over the following years, with Seth Grahame-Smith, Rick Famuyiwa, and the duo of John Francis Daley and Jonathan Goldstein all departing the project over creative differences. Muschietti and Hodson joined the film in July 2019, and pre-production began in January 2020. The film is influenced by the comic book storyline Flashpoint, featuring multiple DC characters, including Ben Affleck and Keaton reprising their respective versions of Batman. Principal photography took place from April to October 2021 at Warner Bros. Studios, Leavesden and on location around the United Kingdom. The Flash premiered at Grauman's Chinese Theatre in Los Angeles on June 12, 2023, and was released in the United States on June 16, following multiple delays caused by director changes, the COVID-19 pandemic, post-production setbacks and controversies surrounding Miller. The film received mixed reviews from critics, with praise for its plot, action sequences, humor, and performances (particularly of Miller and Keaton), but criticism for the quality of its visual effects and screenplay.
