Today, we're revisiting a conversation with a guest who has profoundly impacted me and, I believe, represents the true potential of hospitality. Craig Poole, a three-time Hilton Connie Award winner and the American Hotel and Lodging Association's General Manager of the Year, has set an incredible example at the DoubleTree in Reading, Pennsylvania. His hotel excels financially and has redefined what it means to be a community cornerstone.Craig's story offers a powerful reminder of how hospitality can drive transformation—not only for guests but for employees and entire neighborhoods and cities. His work shows us that when we genuinely care for people, we inspire loyalty, change lives, and create long-lasting impacts on communities. Craig hires locally, often bringing in people who others might overlook, including those with past challenges. His approach to “second chance hiring” and deep community engagement has turned his hotel into a place of opportunity and pride for the city.Listen in to hear how Craig has created a culture of selflessness, where “loving people where they're at” goes hand-in-hand with business success. His vision is about more than just a hotel; it's about creating a place where people feel a part of, valued and supported. His words remind us that hospitality is about more than beds and meals—it's about hearts and lives. Craig's journey shows us that when we lead with purpose and stand behind our people, we create waves of positive change that ripple far beyond the walls of our businesses. Also see: Follow Me and I Will Be Behind You (Craig's documentary)Send Josiah a text A few more resources: If you're new to Hospitality Daily, start here. Last year, in 2021, I cherished a few conversations of my podcast conversations so much, that I have to revisit them. I feel this conversation is a timeless gift, whether you are an experienced hospitality leader, a brand new general manager or if you aspire to be a great general manager someday. If you are looking for a truly extraordinary leader to follow, listen to Craig Poole, President of Reading Hospitality and a recent recipient of Global Hospitality's Julian Star Award, presented by the International Hospitality Institute. My fellow podcaster friends, Kyle Allison and Greg Fregoso of Hospitality MD made a documentary about how Craig Poole transformed a community in the second poorest city in the country by launching the DoubleTree by Hilton in Reading Pennsylvania. Craig's hospitality leadership philosophy is called, Follow me and I will be Behind You. The film of the same name was a contest winner at the Reading Film Festival, and I encourage everyone to watch it and be inspired. I dare you not to shed a tear or two! Not only did the hotel change the trajectory of the lives of the people who worked there, but the hotel is also very profitable and one of the top-rated hotels on Tripadvisor in all of Pennsylvania. I hope you will listen and have a new view of the beauty and power of what Craig calls, "authentic hospitality". Right now in our communities, our most vulnerable people are being given 30 day notices to vacate their apartments. The wave of homelessness is expanding beyond our comprehension. In this episode, Craig Poole, driven by his high level of empathy and concern for those who are being marginalized, uses his voice to become their voice for hope. Craig speaks about what we (collectively) can do to help those, who by no fault of their own, are being put out of their homes and onto the streets. How can we all come together and help those who are suffering, as Craig calls it, from an evictiondemic.
Craig Poole and Dan Hoch join Toni Reece in a conversation about the power of an employee feeling valued, their work valued and their role in your company valued. Understanding their value directly impacts the quality of their work. Listen to this important conversation about self-worth, feeling valued and how it all ties together into Humanize P.R.O.F.I.T.
Craig Poole joins Toni Reece and Dan Hoch to share his thoughts on the "Wonderment Principle". This strategy not only applies during the holiday season but is incredibly effective all year round. At the end of this episode you will be asking yourself "Where are we applying wonderment?" Enjoy!
Kyle Allison shares with Toni Reece and Dan Hoch his journey to making a documentary about the DoubleTree by Hilton Reading. Kyle wanted to learn the secret to this hotel's success and their consistent honor of being the #1 DoubleTree worldwide. He came to visit the hotel, meet Craig Poole, the General Manager, interviewed employees and made a movie! Follow Me and I Will Be Behind You is the name of the documentary and in the interviews you will hear loud and clear the strategy of Humanzing Profit at work.
In this episode Toni Reece speaks to Craig Poole, President of Reading Hospitality Management, LLC, and Steve Bonner, V.P. of Food and Beverage at the DoubleTree by Hilton Reading about merging their collective businesses during the pandemic. It was about acquiring, aligning and creating a partnership that has become a win/win for the hotel and the community.
Craig Poole, President of Reading Hospitality Management LLC, and General Manager of DoubleTree by Hilton Reading, joins Toni Reece in this episode to share his wisdom regarding getting your pros ready to be better than ever. Your leaders and managers are coming out of a global pandemic, coaching and leading is the way forward. They are already the best but we need a strategy to get them to be better than their best!
I have a great story for you today! If you want a fantastic example of how leadership and the highest standards for guest experience excellence can produce more revenue, more return visits, and more five-star reviews, you won't find a better example than in the story of Craig Poole, AHLA General Manager of the year and President of Reading Hospitality Management - Doubletree by Hilton. Hear how Craig took a distressed hotel in one of the poorest, most crime-filled cities in Pennsylvania, hired nearly 200 people, many with no experience and no exposure to what service and hospitality looks like. He looked for people who felt hope for the city and the joy of hospitality in their hearts and gave them a chance to build something amazing together that would change people's lives in the city of Reading. Even ex-felons were given a second chance to turn their lives around for themselves, their families, and their community. Now The Doubletree by Hilton in Reading, Pennsylvania is not only the top-rated Doubletree in the world with a perfect 5-Bubble review score on Tripadvisor, but it also is one of the highest-rated hotels on Tripadvisor in the entire state, and comfortably selling at rates $50 a night its competition. Mr. Poole says that he and his team accomplished this extraordinary level of guest satisfaction, completely aligned with the culture and values of Hilton and Doubletree. Indeed, if everyone at the brand actually embraced the well documented values of Hilton, the entire company would see it's guest satisfaction scores rise significantly along with revenues and shareholder returns. If you want to hear what might be stopping other GM's from embracing this more joyful and effective leadership style, you'll just have to listen. You know Craig Poole runs the Doubletree by Hilton in downtown Reading, but did you know he also owned one of top 100 jazz clubs in the world? James Street Jazz Club in Pittsburgh was Craig’s home for 16 years. Craig recalls those memories and likens the scene to Penn Street. The impact of jazz and jazz clubs in an urban neighborhood is the ability to bring everybody in, it’s very eclectic, multi denominational, multi-generational and it’s safe. He says Jazz is something that just ‘happens’. You have to be there to truly enjoy it and see it happen. It brings people together. Craig calls Jazz “the great equalizer… You could be president of company , a professor in college, or somebody that doesn’t have a dime. Jazz brings people together and they are all equal for a period of time… enjoying the same thing, in the same spirit and in the same time”. Hear some of Craig’s stories from the jazz scene and what he is looking forward to at this year’s Boscov’s Berks Jazz Fest.

Okay, here's the next episode of your Amps and Axes Podcast. It starts with a couple of topics prompted by listener questions. First, Jeff addresses a question about his favorite Super Reverb amps. Then, there's a little talk about preamp tubes, complete with mention of a couple of links (provided here) that give a very comprehensive description of all the currently produced 12AX7 and 6L6 style tubes. Then the guys bring in their guest of the day, Craig Poole. Craig had been a professional tech for many years and has just recently come off the road and moved on to his next endeavor, so let's find out the who and the what of his past and the where and why of his future. Enjoy and Thanks for Listening. Onward!
