#744: Death to Smoochy vs The Cable Guy by C.W.A
This week, we get all dressed up in our furry suits and eat hot dogs and “rocket ship” shaped cookies before discussing Death to Smoochy. This behind-the-scenes look into a crazy world of depraved children's show entertainers is made even more entertaining with the great Robin Williams as Rainbow F-ing Randolph. It may not be the best-constructed story, but the comedy more than makes up for it. RIP Spinner. We love you, champ.
This week Jordan and Emily decided to watch a movie that some have argued is the greatest film of all time. No, not Death To Smoochy, we watched The Godfather Part 2. Harvey Fierstein!! A name (and a voice) that will conjure up great feelings of affection to those familiar with him. He is a monumental figure in theatre - with a plethora of awards to back it up - and he helped pave the way for queer representation in Hollywood, but where are the film roles?? He will be known to most for his memorable turns as Frank, the make-up artist who turns his brother into the infamous Scottish nanny in Mrs. Doubtfire (Chris Columbus, 1993) or perhaps as Marty, the frantic cable company manager in Independence Day (Roland Emmerich, 1996). But it is Harvey's work in Torch Song Trilogy (Paul Boggart, 1988) that provides his crowning film achievement and gives him a rare leading role. For so many years I would see this DVD in the discount bins at video stores, I would see it come on after watching something on Comedy Central and turn the channel, now thanks to Brandy G, I can no longer escape Smoochy! I can't lie, I wasn't looking forward to this one so I hoped it would be a pleasant surprise. The "Dirty Sons of Pitches" are examining the 2000s decade year-by-year, and they've worked their way to 2002, and now they're discussing Robin Williams' dark comedy directed by Danny DeVito, the kids TV satire, "Death to Smoochy," and the inexplicable college sex comedy involving two rephrensible men cloning a lady and then training her to be their "perfect woman/sexual partner," the little known, and for a reason, "Repli-Kate" starring James Roday, Ali Landy, the "Doritos girl," and the requirement for every sex comedy in the 2000s, Eugene Levy. Oh, it's bad on many levels, especially as a condemnation of men. Available on Apple and Spotify Episode 374 includes: -Oscar recap! Hooray for "Everything Everywhere" and hat it means going forward. -"The Little Mermaid" trailer debuts... during the literal Oscar telecast. -Ben is bored by "65" and deliberates all the ways it could have been better. -By the Decade -- 2002 -- "Death to Smoochy" / "Repli-Kate" -Ben still feels "Death to Smoochy" hits a special place for him, while Nate finds it to be too clunky and obvious and redundant, but both guys dig into the many many ways that the National Lampoon "Repli-Kate" comedy defies consent and feminism and good thinking.

Sometimes satire ages like fine wine, and sometimes it just sours and everyone hates it. And dark / violent satire is even dicier. Does Danny DeVito (director of Throw Momma From the Train, The War of the Roses, and Matilda) pull it off this time around? Spoiler: box-office-wise, no. This movie failed miserably. But how does it hold up as an actual movie? Let's sit down with the excellent filmmaker Lucky McKee (@luckymckee) and talk about it. Thanks for listening to Overhated! Danny DeVito's pitch black children's TV satire Death to Smoochy was one of the biggest financial flops of 2002. The film only grossed $8.3 million on a $50 million budget for Warner Bros, despite the presence of Robin Williams and Edward Norton in the leads, as disgraced host Rainbow Randolph and Smoochy the Rhino, respectively. Critics savaged the film, and co-star Jon Stewart has not stopped apologizing for it in the years since its release. The thing is, though, Death to Smoochy isn't a bad movie. In fact, it's kind of great, and we dig into this much-maligned satire on this week's episode of WTF Happened to this Movie!

Death to Smoochy is a black comedy about the ills of child television programming and its clear exploitation of kids for monetary gain. The concept is ripe for the picking. Sadly, Death to Smoochy's execution of it is lacking. Neither funny, nor particularly compelling, its a movie devoid of all the essential ingredients of a good comedy. The characters—played at least with enthusiasm by Robin Williams as Rainbow Randolph and Edward Norton, the titular Smoochy—are generally unlikeable. Randolph, who goes through a sort of awakening after losing his prime TV spot, just sort of sucks; and considering none of his self-reflection ever involves acknowledging he was fired for good reason, I'm not sure the point of it. Throw in a needless and bizarre romance angle, multiple mob sub-plots, Jon Stewart's weird haircut, and a character whose brain damage is played for laughs, and you get one of the more mediocre enterprises of the early 2000s. Hence why it flopped, earning $8.3 million on a budget of $50 million (Why was it that high?); and why it earned poor reviews, 42% on Rotten Tomatoes with 119 of them. Anyway, there are a couple of good jokes. So, sit back, plot revenge while sipping a Brotherly Love Hazy IPA from Victory Brewing, and remember: Your stepdad isn't mean ... He's just adjusting! I, the Thunderous Wizard (@WriterTLK), Capt. Cash, and Chumpzilla are all auditioning to be backup skaters in Smoochy on Ice! After corrupt children's show host Rainbow Randolph gets arrested for misconduct the KidsNet network scrambles to find a new host in the morally grounded mascot Smoochy, created by Sheldon Mopes. Add Danny DeVito as director and co-star, as well as a 50 million dollar budget — what could possibly go wrong? Join Sebastian and Jennifer as they sing joyous songs for the children and try to understand why Death to Smoochy was such a critical and financial failure.
