We zijn al 2,5 maand bezig aan het nieuw podcast seizoen en dus hoogste tijd voor een reeks stellingen met Bjorn, Rob en gast Jelle Kleinen (L1). Roda kan de eerste periode titel praktisch niet meer ontlopen. Met zoveel scorend vermogen, deze stabiele verdediging en positieve vibe hoeft Roda zich dit seizoen absoluut geen zorgen over een lage klassering en zou zelfs mee kunnen doen voor directe promotie. Roda JC moet het contract van Sibum nu al openbreken en verlengen. Roda JC heeft met oa. Katy Didden is the author of Ore Choir: The Lava on Iceland (Tupelo Press, 2022), and The Glacier's Wake (Pleiades Press, 2013). Her poems, essays, and reviews appear in journals such as Public Books, Poetry Northwest, Ecotone, Diagram, The Kenyon Review, Image, 32 Poems, The Spoon River Poetry Review, The Sewanee Review, and Poetry, and her work has been featured on Verse Daily and Poetry Daily.  She has received fellowships and residencies from The Bread Loaf Writers' Conference, Sewanee Writers' Conference, the Vermont Studio Center, the Virginia Center for Creative Arts, the Ragdale Foundation, the Hambidge Center, the MacDowell Colony, and the Listhús Residency in Ólafsfjörður, Iceland. She was also a 2013-2014 Hodder Fellow at Princeton University. Welcome to Off The Bricks, Poets, and Poetry lovers! This week we are featuring the geological poetry of Katy Didden! Didden focuses her newest work on the perspective of Icelandic lava flows, and their destructive and creative powers. Didden allows the source materials of various Icelandic texts and refrences to be revealed through that which the lava covers in her gorgeous new book, Ore Choir: The Lava on Iceland. Featured first, her poem in the cold open references an interview of Bjork conducted by Mathias Augustynaik and Michael Amzalg to be featured in Interview Magazine from 2009.

In de negentiende aflevering van de Dagvantoen-podcast staat het bronzen beeld van Erasmus in Rotterdam centraal. Het beeld, voor de Laurenskerk, werd in april 1622 geplaatst. “Dat was in de tijd van de VOC”, zegt Esther Didden van het Centrum Beeldende Kunst (CBK) Rotterdam. “Mensen als Piet Heyn en Napoleon Bonaparte hebben het beeld nog zien staan. Het maakt gewoon deel uit van de geschiedenis van de stad.” Didden wijst er verder op dat dit al de vijfde versie is van het beeld. Met de vorige edities is het steeds niet goed afgelopen. Maar de huidige versie houdt het dus al vier eeuwen vol. De onthulling van het beeld wordt ook gezien als het begin van de stadscollectie van Rotterdam. Het standbeeld van Erasmus in Rotterdam (1622, Hendrik de Keyser) Ter gelegenheid van de 400ste verjaardag van het beeld wordt er op 29 april in de Laurenskerk een symposium gehouden door Sculpture International Rotterda, Beeldende Kunst & Openbare Ruimte (BKOR) en het CBK over het beeld. The poems in Katy Didden‘s debut The Glacier’s Wake (Pleiades Press, 2013) are civilized and dignified and so are their surfaces: sophisticated soundscapes, pitch-perfect diction, a humane voice. And in The Glacier’s Wake, we do, in fact, encounter poems that exhibit a high-level of competency as it relates to craft. And it’s certainly true that someone who devotes time and energy and improves their skills is indeed involved in a virtuous endeavor. Dedication to poetic craft, however, is not only a bulwark against vice, but almost always a sign that a poet is using craft to veil a great suffering, and I sense Katy Didden’s poems are doing exactly that. Didden’s technical abilities have less to do with a deference to tradition, but have to do with a more urgent obligation – protecting both the reader and the poet from her grave interior life, which is one of the most generous gestures a poet can make. We flourish in her poems because the poet protects us from her. But so adamant and gigantic are the poet’s ideas and feelings, it doesn’t seem like an accident that Didden uses as her primary metaphor, as a counter-force to her crushing sensitivity, our planet’s geological history and Earth’s around-the-clock mysterious behavior, juxtaposed with her own miniscule performance in the world. The poems in Katy Didden‘s debut The Glacier’s Wake (Pleiades Press, 2013) are civilized and dignified and so are their surfaces: sophisticated soundscapes, pitch-perfect diction, a humane voice. And in The Glacier’s Wake, we do, in fact, encounter poems that exhibit a high-level of competency as it relates to craft. And it’s certainly true that someone who devotes time and energy and improves their skills is indeed involved in a virtuous endeavor. Dedication to poetic craft, however, is not only a bulwark against vice, but almost always a sign that a poet is using craft to veil a great suffering, and I sense Katy Didden’s poems are doing exactly that. Didden’s technical abilities have less to do with a deference to tradition, but have to do with a more urgent obligation – protecting both the reader and the poet from her grave interior life, which is one of the most generous gestures a poet can make. We flourish in her poems because the poet protects us from her. But so adamant and gigantic are the poet’s ideas and feelings, it doesn’t seem like an accident that Didden uses as her primary metaphor, as a counter-force to her crushing sensitivity, our planet’s geological history and Earth’s around-the-clock mysterious behavior, juxtaposed with her own miniscule performance in the world.
