In this episode of 'The Biggest Table,' host Andrew Camp explores various aspects of Christian faith and community with Dr. Scot McKnight. The discussion emphasizes maintaining curiosity, humility, and ensuring Jesus remains the focal point in church activities and teachings. Key themes include addressing deconstruction in modern Christianity, the importance of communal gatherings around a table akin to early Christian traditions, and the transformative nature of interactive church settings. The symbolism of Jesus as the 'bread of life' is examined both in spiritual and social contexts, advocating for equitable practices and support within the church. The conversations underscore fostering community, imagination, and fellowship, reflecting on personal experiences and the symbolic power of shared meals in embodying God's love.Scot McKnight (born 1953) is an American New Testament scholar, historian of early Christianity, theologian, and author who has written widely on the historical Jesus, early Christianity and Christian living. He is the author of more than 90 books, including Jesus Creed, The Blue Parakeet, Kingdom Conspiracy, A Fellowship of Differents, A Church Called Tov, and Pivot (the last two of which he coauthored with his daughter Laura). His newest book is Invisible Jesus (coauthored with Tommy Preson Phillips), which explores the prophetic voice of deconstructors.McKnight is an ordained Anglican deacon and canon theologian for the Diocese of Churches for the Sake of Others with anabaptist leanings, and has also written frequently on issues in modern anabaptism. This episode of the Biggest Table is brought to you in part by Wild Goose Coffee. The witness of the church, straight from the lips of the Lord (and Paul), is that there is always a space for you in this place of grace because our differences make us the church. We have eyes and ears and fingers and toes. We have friends and family and strangers and foes. In other words, the church is an antidote to the loneliness of the world, and the loneliness that far too many of us experience. It's here, among this body, that we learn of our shared story, that we are not alone, and that we are valued not because of what we can do, but because of who we are. The church opens us up to a future we cannot conceive on our own. It trains us in the habits of gratitude for one another. And it sets us free to delight in diversity.

The church, from the very beginning, was designed to be a community of "Unlikes," a community of "Differents." There is a palpable tension in the New Testament around the inclusion of the Gentiles in the early church. Christianity was born out of the Jewish faith, and there came points along the way where there was pressure to let Gentiles be part of it. But God's plan—from the very beginning—was for Jewish and Gentile Christians to worship together, and do life together, and sort out the tensions and disagreements together, in the shadow of the cross and in the shadow of an abundant communion table. Now, the dislike and hatred between these two groups cannot be overstated. Let me put it this way: If the Jew-Gentile tension was a great Dane, the Democrat-Republican tension is a toy poodle. It doesn't compare. God's plan was to pull them together as one people united under King Jesus to witness to a chaotic world how powerful and good He is. The church is supposed to be a society of different people who are seeking first the Kingdom of God, and navigating everything—including political chaos—in a way that is in sharp contrast to how it's done everywhere else. So we're talking about politics because we, Oak Hills Church, have a marvelous opportunity to demonstrate who Jesus really is, and sort out the political tensions and disagreements in the shadow of the cross and in the shadow of an abundant communion table.

In week six of “Build His Church”, Pastor Matt Nelson from City Church Tulsa challenges us with a convicting message from Romans 15: In a radically divided time, we need a radically united church. We need the Gospel of Jesus Christ at the center to unify a diverse people. He urges us to allow our identity in Christ to surpass all other identities and to use love as the key to overcoming personal opinions, preferences, and freedoms for the sake of others. In this episode, Scot McKnight talks about one of his new books – Pivot. This book is a follow up to A Church Called Tov which really hit a nerve when it debuted. In that book they wrote about toxic church culture and contrast it to tov culture, or goodness culture. Pivot is the book of implementation. What are the steps to get to a tov church? What are the things that we need to implement? We talk about Holy Spirit, Christlikeness, models, long patience, giving ownership over to the church body, and more. It's a great conversation. So, join us as we discover the pivotal priorities, practices, and powers that we can live into, so we can transform into a tov culture. Scot McKnight is professor of New Testament at Northern Seminary and a recognized authority on the New Testament, early Christianity, and the historical Jesus. He is the author of more than ninety books, including the award-winning The Jesus Creed as well as A Church Called Tov, The King Jesus Gospel, A Fellowship of Differents, The Blue Parakeet, and Kingdom Conspiracy. Today's show includes the wisdom of four people who will find on independent news because the truth they share is not ready for primetime mainstream media. While the subjects they talk about may seem different you can easily figure out their connection. Caitlin Johnstone talks about Biden's hypocrisy in celebrating press freedom day while persecuting Julian Assange, Krystal, and Saagar about the drone over the Kremlin and that dangerous escalation, Juan Gonzalez on burying the Monroe Doctrine, and Yanis Varoufakis about Europe becoming a vassal of the US, or worse.
In this episode Dr. Scot McKnight gives a vision for the book of Revelation. He talks about how we, as followers of Jesus, can live faithfully as witnesses to the Lamb in the shadow of Babylon (or the Empire). He talks about being dissident disciples, how black spirituals are an example of the songs in Revelation, how the Gospel sees and utilizes power, and more.Scot McKnight is Professor of New Testament at Northern Seminary in Lisle, Illinois. Fellowship of Differents - Romans 15:1-13 - Cody Busby

With Paul's help, we too, have begun to discover what it looks like to preserve unity while celebrating the differents among us—to preserve God's world-changing social experiment—the Church. Learning how to bring unlikes and differents to the same table to share life as a new kind of family. While also recognizing that when we do this, we show the world what love, justice, peace, reconciliation, and life together are designed by God to be. Today we take a look at one last question—what makes thriving (in this pursuit) possible. We don't merely want to survive, we all want to thrive. God's answer to this question is that we thrive, as a celebration of differents, when we walk according to the Spirit submitting to His work in our lives.
In this series we've been discovering what it looks like to preserve unity all the while celebrating the differents among us—learning how to preserve God's world-changing social experiment—the Church. Learning how to bring unlikes and differents to the same table to share life as a new kind of family. All the while recognizing that when we do this, we show the world what love, justice, peace, reconciliation, and life together are designed by God to be. Up to this point, we've talked about the need for grace and love in accomplishing this goal. For a more in depth look at those two ideas you can go back and listen to the messages online. I also address the issue of love in this week's “Critically Biblical” podcast. I take a practical approach to 1 Corinthians 13 and the components of love within Paul's immediate context. I encourage you to check that out as it has everything to do with what we're talking about in our series. Today (although grace and love will always be mainstays) we're going to shift our focus to the new life we've been given in King Jesus.
The Apostle Paul explained love to the Corinthians when he wrote the words, “Love is patient, love is kind and is not jealous; love does not brag and is not arrogant, does not act unbecomingly; it does not seek its own, is not provoked, does not take into account a wrong suffered, does not rejoice in unrighteousness, but rejoices with the truth; bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things. Love never fails.” - 1 Corinthians 13:4-8a In this amazing section of scripture, Paul was (as always) writing within a particular context. In this case, it was a context fitting for our series. God's people needed to accept and celebrate the manifold gifts that He'd bestowed on them. However, and as is often the case, the Corinthians accepted and celebrated only those gifts they understood. Toward the end of Paul's teaching, he says that he wants to show the Corinthians a more excellent way—the way of love. What was “more excellent” than the giftings each individual possessed was the love that would bind all those gifted differents together.
What are the necessary components for preserving unity—for living at peace in this family that God has adopted us into? Over the remaining weeks, we'll be talking about several of these components: grace, love, and new life, all designed to help us flourish within God's family. Today we look at grace.
In this series we are going to understand what it means to be at peace and unified as a collection of differents while learning to celebrate those differences. Then, we will be equipped to show the world God's grand plan. Our series is titled "A Celebration of Differents" and today's message is “What is the Church supposed to be?”
We are not all the same. We are all quite different. Yet in Christ's Church we are to be unified and not remain divided into our own little sub-groups.The World System forces UNIFORMITY, requiring everyone to think the same and be the same. You can't have a view that's different from THE NARRATIVE. The World System also focuses too much on all our differences and desires to put us into its own groups that remain divided. In today's podcast, Rachel, Jason, and Ryan talk about how JESUS' CHURCH is totally different than the World by being UNIFIED through faith in Jesus Christ and allowing every person to STILL MAINTAIN their GOD-GIVEN uniqueness. How can we work to build this UNITY that Jesus died and rose again to secure for us? How about through NATURAL RELATIONSHIPS with one another in HIS CHURCH so that we can be the FELLOWSHIP of DIFFERENTS that God created us to be?ONE BODY. MANY MEMBERS. UNITED in CHRIST. NOT DIVIDED. His Beautiful Church!
Racial tension is at a high point. The embodiment of the Kingdom found in the New Testament and lived out through the Church was to be a vision of unity and diversity. The Church in America, unfortunately, has remained one of the most segregated organizations instead of being a vision for unity and diversity. Pastor Derwin Gray and Transformation Church is a shining light of how the Church can be the type of diverse community it was intended to be. Hear about Pastor Derwin's journey of planting Transformation Church, the challenges they faced from being a multiethnic church, and the steps any church can take to become a richer expression of the diverse Kingdom of God. Trahisons, humiliations, violences...

Our Summer 2021 Sermon Series explores, What is the Church? Pastor AJ Swanson 6/27/21
Ephesians 3:10 The post Family of Differents appeared first on Grace Harbor Church.
Church, I am so excited. I have been thinking about this sermon for over a year, and today we kick off a new series called Groundwork. We’re looking at the Biblical teachings that are the foundational cores of our values. To put it in another way, it’s adding a perspective — or a foundation […]
Thanks for joining us! Want to know more about Calvary? Visit calvary-church.com to get connected. We are coming off a year like no other – the cancelled year. Work from home, church from home, no fellowship, no community – except by Zoom. Church services were cancelled but church was not cancelled! The mission of Jesus – to connect & impact - was not revoked, even though the strategies and the means changed. We revisited and revised our plans to ensure that the spiritual, relational, and physical needs of people were met. But things are now opening up and more people are beginning to return to Sunday morning services. As we move to the new normal, it's a good time to remind ourselves about the purpose and importance of church. It's also critical to ask what the church will look like on the other side of Covid 19. Some things won't change and can't change – following Jesus, the priority of the gospel, loving our neighbors; other things have changed and will change – the use of technology, increased flexibility, and creativity. What will the next season look like for Calvary Church? Join us as we explore the never-changing and ever-changing church of Jesus Christ.
