Life is full of moments when someone or something doesn’t go as planned. Disappointment sets in, and we battle anger, depression, denial, or even doubt. We often give up on the idea of peace in moments like this. However, Jesus offers us peace even amidst a life overflowing with disappointment. In this message, Pastor Scott Savage concludes our “Missing Peace” series by discussing how we overcome disappointment and experience God’s peace in the middle of the place we never planned to be.

But it displeased Jonah exceedingly,[a] and he was angry. 2 And he prayed to the Lord and said, “O Lord, is not this what I said when I was yet in my country? That is why I made haste to flee to Tarshish; for I knew that you are a gracious God and merciful, slow to anger and abounding in steadfast love, and relenting from disaster. 3 Therefore now, O Lord, please take my life from me, for it is better for me to die than to live.” 4 And the Lord said, “Do you do well to be angry?”—Jonah 4: 1-4

A young woman was new on the job. Her thread became tangled and she thought, "I'll just straighten this out myself." She tried, but the situation only worsened. Finally she called the foreman. "I did the best I could," she said. "No you didn't. To do the best, you should have called me." Sermonillustrations.com, Source Unknown. In an essay on prayer, C.S. Lewis suggested that God treats new Christians with a special kind of tenderness, much as a parent dotes on a newborn. He quotes an experienced Christian: "I have seen many striking answers to prayer and more than one that I thought miraculous. But they usually come at the beginning before conversion, or soon after it. As the Christian life proceeds, they tend to be rarer. The refusals, too, are not only more frequent; they become more unmistakable, more emphatic.". At first glance, such a suggestion seems to have it all backward. Shouldn't faith become easier, not harder, as a Christian progresses? But, as Lewis points out, the New Testament gives two strong examples of unanswered prayers: Jesus pled three times for God to "Take this cup from me" and Paul begged God to cure the "thorn in my flesh." Lewis asks, "Does God then forsake just those who serve Him best? Well, He who served Him best of all said, near His tortured death, 'Why hast thou forsaken me?' When God becomes man, that Man, of all others, is least comforted by God, at His greatest need. There is a mystery here which, even if I had the power, I might not have the courage to explore. Meanwhile, little people like you and me, if our prayers are sometimes granted, beyond all hope and probability, had better not draw hasty conclusions to our own advantage. If we were stronger, we might be less tenderly treated. If we were braver, we might be sent, with far less help, to defend far more desperate posts in the great battle." Quoted in Disappointment With God, Philip Yancey, Zondervan, p. 208.

The next character in our study of “The Baddest People in the Bible” is Satan himself. We'll begin by wrestling with whether thoughtful 21st century people of faith believe in Satan and, if so, why? Then we'll explore what powerful lessons we can learn from Satan's profoundly negative example.
In these early days of His ministry, Jesus has been disclosing more and more of His authority and power. He's cast out demons, forgiven sins, and most recently he's raised the dead. Everyone is asking the question: Who is this Jesus? Some consider Him a healer; others think He's a great prophet. Still, others wonder if He's the Messiah who would restore the Kingdom and make all things new. And just when it seems like there can be no doubt of who this Jesus is, doubt arises from the most unlikely source, John the Baptist. John the Baptist began to wonder out loud if Jesus really was the Messiah. What gives rise to this doubt is stemming from John the Baptist's Disappointment with God. John had all these expectations and Jesus wasn't delivering on them. Disappointment with God is something many of us can relate to. In this passage we find three scenarios in which disappointment with God so often arises. When Hope is Deferred When Prayers go Unanswered When Desires are Frustrated When Hope is Deferred Why doesn't God fix everything right now? Would you dare to believe I have purpose in this pause? Why God doesn't just fix everything right now: because He doesn't want any to perish and He longs for all to reach repentance. When Prayers go Unanswered Why isn't God intervening in my situation? Would you dare to trust my goodness in this grief? When God says “no” to His children, He always does so from love. When Desires are Frustrated The topic shifts from John's disappointment with God to the Pharisee's disappointment with God. Why can't God just play by our rules? We want a customized God, made in our own image. Would you dare to hold onto My character in this confusion? Takeaway: Would you dare to let God be God?

Sins of Discontentment and Their Consequences
If we are honest, everyone at some time in our lives (including Christians) has experienced such disappointment. Isn't that blasphemy? Won't that insult God when we suggest such an outrageous thing? This series was designed to answer those and other questions that help us grow in our relationships with the one true God, our Father and Creator.

Have you ever been disappointed with God? Are you disappointed with God right now? Chances are our disappointment with God comes from our plans being changed because of his plans. We look at the life of Mary and Joseph and how God changed their plans to bring the Savior into the world to save us from our sin. And through all the changes in their plans, they chose to worship through and trust. Their disappointment was actually a divine appointment with God and your's can be, too!Group Questions:1. Have you ever been disappointed with God? Have you ever been made to feel guilty for feeling such a way toward God?2. Read Proverbs 16:9 & Proverbs 19:21. When was a time God changed your plans? How did it work out?3. Mary and Joseph were both troubled by the role they would play in God's story for humanity. (Mary - Luke 1:29) (Joseph - Matthew 1:19). Was ultimately their response and talk candidly about their process to arrive there.4. LEADER - select a worship song to play before you wrap-up your discussion time. Use that time of listening and worshiping to trust God's plan for whatever is on your heart.5. John Powell wrote: "I have a sign in the mirror of my room I see everyone morning in my groggy condition, when I first wake up: WHAT HAVE YOU GOT GOING TODAY, GOD? I'D LIKE TO BE PART OF IT. THANKS FOR CHOOSING ME!" Let this be your prayer in the days ahead.

As soon as we start believing and expecting the Holy Spirit to do miraculous stuff, we run into all sorts of places where our expectations aren't met. God healed this person. Why not that person? Rev. Dr. Peter Choi invites us into Psalm 73 and explores how Psalms of “disorientation” give us permission to shake our fists with the best of God's people and be reminded that sometimes the most faithful response is the most honest response. Have you ever been disappointed with God? You prayed for healing, deliverance or protection and things got worse? You prayed for finances and lost your job or business? You prayed for your marriage and ended up in divorce court? You prayed for loved ones who seem more lost and spinning out of control? Disappointment, discouragement, and disillusionment are part of the human experience. The sense that God let you down is very common. Sometimes it seems we need to forgive a sinless God, because it FEELS like He/She sinned. If God seems like He/She can’t or won’t help you, you have nowhere to go. We make our own lousy Gods.
