#190// What do you see with your eyes closed? What do you see when you allow your spirit to set vision as it's connected to the Spirit of God?Listen, Sister . . . if we're actually going to BEHOLD the things of God in the natural, we've got to get good at seeing it with our spirit first. This past weekend, I had the opportunity to speak to and exhort over 300 women at our REVIVE Woman Conference 2025 about what it looks like to BEHOLD with God... to perceive the new thing He is doing in this coming season (see Isaiah 43:19). The truth is: We BECOME what we BEHOLD!If we are continually beholding our Savior -- the way He walked and talked and related to others -- we will become more and more like Him. If we allow ourselves to behold the negative, the swirl, the chaos or overwhelm, we will continually see that all around us. And here's the part no one wants to say out loud: We can't BECOME on our own because it's hard for us to BEHOLD on our own. We NEED other faith-filled, godly women of purpose around us -- cheering us on, calling us up higher, discipling and challenging us -- for our GOOD and for the GLORY of God!And you better believe the enemy is going to do everything in his power to keep you from beholding. Because he doesn't want you to BECOME! That makes you a BIG threat to his kingdom of darkness. But I've got his schemes in my sight and I'm going to share with you The Four Strategies the Enemy Uses to Keep Us from Beholding:

I'm rebooting my podcast to focus on communicating for change. This week we're going to talk about how to uplift people of Hispanic descent. I share statistics about the prevalence of people of Hispanic descent in the U.S. workforce and why it's important to uplift them.In the U.S., National Hispanic Heritage Month is observed from September 15 to October 15. It's a time to celebrate the histories, cultures, and contributions of Americans whose ancestors came from Spain, Mexico, the Caribbean, and Central and South America. In this podcast I share four strategies to celebrate and support people of Hispanic descent during this month and all year long.1.   Know your termsLet's begin with Hispanic, which means someone descended from Spanish-speaking countries. A Latino or Latina is a man or woman of Latin American descent. Latinx and Latine have emerged as gender-neutral alternatives to Latino or Latina, which encompass Hispanic people from all racial backgrounds and those who identify as LBGTQIA+. The terms “Latinx” or “Latine” are not widely accepted though, especially among older generations.Others prefer to identify themselves by their country of origin, similar to some Native Americans preferring to be called by their Tribe or some Black people disliking the term “BIPOC.” It's more respectful when you name someone's origin instead of lumping them together.Ask people of Latin-American or Hispanic descent what terms they prefer.2.   Avoid cultural appropriationIn a Great British Bakeoff Mexican-themed episode a few years ago, the hosts wore ponchos and sombreros and made insensitive jokes. As we approach Halloween, this is a good time for my annual reminder to not appropriate other cultures.Unless you are Latine, avoid:·      Wearing Mexican or Indigenous traditional costumes or Chola style outfits ·      Getting culturally themed tattoos·      Celebrating Dia de Los Muertos without understanding its deep cultural meaning·      Using Cinco de Mayo as an excuse to party without participating in the cultural elements3.   Celebrate with culturally appropriate activities Celebrating cultural holidays, traditions, and events can be a powerful way to show support. Ask your Latine colleagues or community members for ideas, but avoid singling them out or requiring them to lead or participate. Here are some ideas to consider:·      Feature culturally inspired music, food, films, and art·      Sponsor a book group with selections by Latine authors·      Discuss Latine diversity, equity, and inclusion·      Host an educational session led by Latine professionals ·      Celebrate the contributions of your Latine employees or community members·      Spotlight Latine businesses·      Host celebrations and workshops, encouraging employees to share their own experiences and customsMake sure your activities are respectful and inclusive. Do your research and check in with Latine folks to make it fun and educational. 4.     Offer support to Latine employees in the workplace all year longAny attempt to celebrate National Hispanic Heritage Month will be inauthentic unless you work toward everyday inclusion. With their rich cultural heritage and diverse perspectives, Latine employees contribute significantly to the workforce. However, they face everyday prejudice and need specific support. This support could include:·      Fostering cultural sensitivity and awareness. Educate employees about diverse cultures, traditions, and languages. Break down stereotypes and create a more inclusive atmosphere.·      Addre

Student loan forgiveness is much in the news these days. It's on. It's off. It's on again, maybe. What's the lesson here? The lesson is this: Avoiding student loan debt is much easier than getting out of it. It just takes discipline. We'll talk about that with Dr. Art Rainer today. Dr. Art Rainer is the founder of the Institute for Christian Financial Health and Christian Money Solutions. He is a regular contributor here at Faith & Finance and the author of “The Money Challenge for Teens: Prepare for College, Run from Debt, and Live Generously.” A Biblical Foundation for College FinancesWhen it comes to preparing for college, it's important to keep Proverbs 22:7 in mind: “The rich rules over the poor, and the borrower is the slave of the lender.” This verse serves as a crucial reminder that borrowing money, especially for education, can lead to long-term financial burdens. It's easy to accumulate tens of thousands of dollars in student debt that could take decades to repay.Four Strategies to Minimize College DebtIn The Money Challenge for Teens, Dr. Art Rainer outlines four key strategies to help students minimize, or even avoid, college debt:Start Saving Now: The sooner you begin saving for college, the less you'll need to borrow.Take College-Level or AP Courses Now: These can reduce the number of credits you need to take in college, lowering your overall tuition costs.Explore Scholarships and Grants: There's a wealth of financial aid available, but you need to seek it out and apply diligently.Be Willing to Work While in School: Many students work part-time jobs to help cover tuition and reduce the need for loans. While these strategies require effort and discipline, they're far easier than paying back $30,000 or $40,000 in student loans after graduation.Avoiding Costly Misconceptions About CollegeDr. Art Rainer also shares a list of common misconceptions that can lead to unnecessary student debt. Understanding and avoiding these pitfalls can make the college journey much smoother:Misconception #1: Attending a Costly School Guarantees a Better Job: Higher tuition doesn't always translate to higher salaries. Employers care about your degree, not how much you paid for it.Misconception #2: You Need the Whole “College Experience”: Some students work during college to offset tuition costs, which can prevent long-term debt.Misconception #3: It's Okay to Stretch Out College: While there's some flexibility, extending your degree program can increase costs and the risk of not completing your degree.Misconception #4: You Don't Need to Know What You're Signing: Educate yourself on student loans before signing anything. Understand the commitment and explore alternatives.Misconception #5: Everything Will Take Care of Itself: Student loans are difficult to escape, even surviving bankruptcy. It's crucial to manage your debt and avoid complacency.Misconception #6: There's No Other Option: While college costs are high, there are always options like scholarships, grants, and community college. Explore every avenue before taking on debt.Putting in the Hard Work NowIt's far better to put in the hard work now—saving, applying for scholarships, and working while in school—than to be burdened with student debt later. By being proactive and informed, students can avoid the financial pitfalls that so many others face. For more insights and resources from Dr. Art Rainer, visit his website at ChristianMoneySolutions.com. This episode is a recording of a sermon I preached on Sunday, May 19th at my church. In this sermon, I outline four reading strategies that will help guide Christians to a better understanding of the Bible. I discuss how the Bible is a library, not a book, that the Bible was written for us but not to us, that the Bible must be understood in its historical context, and that the Bible should challenge our beliefs instead of affirm them. Do you have to do more to be successful? Is burnout a myth? It's time to stop the hustle culture and eliminate burnout. Does America think burnout is cool? And why? The motto of working hard and doing it alone can no longer support you. It's time to stop the hustle mentality and eliminate burnout for better mental health and more joy. There should not be a comparison between what a stay-at-home or work-from-home mom does and the work accomplished by a woman or man in corporate America. Women's work as caregivers should be recognized as equivalent to that of men or other women in the workforce. A mis-thought is that what caregivers do is not monetized; therefore, it is not measurable. Kristen stated that we need to unlearn many patterns we've been acculturated into as a society, including devaluing caregivers' work. This is one action to start to eliminate burnout. The origin of burnout and why we focus on hard work the way we do. To eliminate burnout, we must understand where the hustle culture originated. Erin explained that the Puritans were the first white settlers to stay in the United States. They held three beliefs: First, you were a good person if you were a hard worker. Second, you were only a good person if you worked hard and did it alone. You could only ask for help with quilting and raising a barn. Third, rest was for when you were dead. Hard work has become a moral judgment. Jesus did not call us to a culture of burnout or to work hard; he called us to love and abundance. Kristen emphasized that Jesus called us to a life of love and abundance in the New Testament. How can we live in love and abundance if all we do is work hard? God did not design us to work to exhaustion; the early church fathers did not believe this. God rested on the seventh day. Likewise, Jesus took naps, rested, and went to parties. Rest on the Sabbath refers to a cessation in creation to remember who you are. Giving our minds and bodies rest. Rest is mandatory to your existence. Through rest, you will experience more love and abundance. With all of that said, it's safe to stay; Jesus wants us to eliminate burnout by changing our mindsets around the need to work hard. Instead, we can focus on working smarter, accepting help, and adopting healthier practices in our business and personal lives. Stop trying to do it all alone; it will result in burnout. And above all these put on love, which binds everything together in perfect harmony. And let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, to which indeed you were called in one body. And be thankful.”      3.      Choose to Forgive. Matthew 6:14-15 (ESV)“For if you forgive others their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you, but if you do not forgive others their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses.” Ephesians 4:29-32 (ESV)“Let no corrupting talk come out of your mouths, but only such as is good for building up, as fits the occasion, that it may give grace to those who hear. And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, by whom you were sealed for the day of redemption. Let all bitterness and wrath and anger and clamor and slander be put away from you, along with all malice. Be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, as God in Christ forgave you.”  4.     Ask a Question. Proverbs 18:17 (ESV)“The one who states his case first seems right, until the other comes and examines him.” Matthew 7:3-4 (ESV)“Why do you see the speck that is in your brother's eye, but do not notice the log that is in your own eye? Hello, and welcome back to another episode of the Inflamed in the Brain podcast! I'm your host, Krissy, and I hope you're having a fantastic day. Today's discussion revolves around a topic that may seem counterintuitive coming from a dietitian – the limitations of meal plans. Join me as we explore why breaking free from the shackles of meal plans can lead to better kitchen confidence and overall well-being.1. The Problem with Meal Plans: Disconnect and Disruption of Internal CuesMeal plans often force us into rigid structures, dictating when and how much we should eat. This disrupts our innate ability to interpret internal cues, leading to extreme hunger and overeating. Learn how this cycle can harm your relationship with food and negatively impact your overall health.2. Perfectionism and Lack of Flexibility: A Meal Plan PitfallDiscover how meal plans can inadvertently cultivate perfectionism, triggering guilt and failure when deviation occurs. I delve into the emotional toll of feeling bound to a strict plan and the negative impact it can have on metabolic health.3. Quantity over Quality: The Caloric ObsessionExplore the detrimental effects of meal plans emphasizing portion control over the nutritional quality of food. Learn why prioritizing the type of calories over the quantity is crucial for long-term health and how it contributes to a more enjoyable and sustainable dietary approach.4. Boredom: The Culprit of Repetitive Meal PlansUncover the less-discussed downside of meal plans – their tendency to become monotonous and uninspiring. I share why variety in your diet is essential for enjoyment and how it contributes to a healthier relationship with food.5. Four Strategies for Kitchen Confidence:a. Themed Nights for Light Structure: Understand the benefits of incorporating themed nights into your meal planning, providing a balance between structure and flexibility.b. Balanced Meals for Optimal Nutrition: Shift your focus from strict portion control to creating visually and practically balanced meals that satisfy your taste buds and health goals.c. Quick Cook Options and Convenience Foods: Embrace the convenience of quick-cook options and pre-made, quality convenience foods to simplify your cooking process without sacrificing health.d.  Trust Yourself: The Key to Long-Term SuccessLearn why trusting your body's internal cues is crucial for a sustainable and fulfilling relationship with food. I provide practical tips on how to connect with your body, eat with intention, and foster a healthy mindset around meals. As we wrap up today's episode, remember that the journey to kitchen confidence doesn't require a rigid meal plan. By embracing flexibility, trusting your body, and incorporating diverse strategies, you can cultivate a positive relationship with food that lasts a lifetime. Here's a question: who walked into work recently and said, "I hope I suck at my job today?" I'm hoping the answer is NONE of our Stacker community. And yet, many of us underperform every day. Why? There are so many ways that we can make ourselves smarter, faster, better at our jobs. We shouldn't leave whether we're excellent at our jobs to our boss, and yet, there ARE some things that we and our boss can both do to transform our workplace and make our company better. Today we're joined by the guy who the world's wisest bosses turn to when they're wondering how to get their workforce to work better -- Andrew McAfee. Andrew has picked the lock on why some companies stink when it comes to empowering their team to rock at their goals and others wallow in mediocrity. He tells us the meaningful stories of how some leaders have transformed their workplace on today's show. But of course, that's not all. In our headline segment, there's good news for people saving for college. The rules have gotten easier? Unfortunately, we don't mean "easier to understand," but just "you can now save more money that helps you also not screw yourself over for financial aid." We'll discuss the secrets you need to know on today's show. You think transforming the workplace is all you need? Now you can also save money on your college costs? Double-whammy! And yet, we still bring you more. We also throw out the Haven Life Line to a guy wanting to "learn something" from the show (he must not know that Andrew McAfee is bringing it this episode!)...and asks us about putting money into a "donor advised fund." What is that exactly, how does it work, and will it transform your workplace? The answers are: "It's complicated, so you should listen," "It helps you avoid LOTS of taxes," and "No." There's still SO MUCH MORE! Come join the fun. Four Strategies to Stop the OPT Unemployment Allowance Clock

International Student Career Search Tips by ICAway

Play Episode Listen Later Jun 16, 2023 11:23

To learn more about job search strategy for F-1 international students, visit https://www.icaway.com/ I've been getting a bunch of requests from new international grads who are on the hunt for jobs in this tough economy. And guess what else? Their OPT is about to start! So, I wanna share four cool strategies with you that can actually stop the OPT unemployment allowance clock. If you just graduated and your OPT is about to start! You have only 90 days after your OPT starts to find a job that's related to your field of study. What I'm going to share today is based on real stories from a few international students who have used these strategies to stop the clock. Before deciding to pursue any of these options, please remember to contact your International Student Services office to ensure eligibility. Consider volunteering to avoid accruing unemployment days.  How can you find non-profit organizations in your area to volunteer with? One effective way is to utilize online platforms and directories that connect volunteers with non-profit organizations. Websites such as  https://www.volunteermatch.org/  https://www.idealist.org/en  https://engage.pointsoflight.org/  can be great resources to find volunteer opportunities.  2. Consider seeking contract jobs. Contract work can be a viable option for your first-year OPT. Many companies and organizations hire contractors for short-term projects or assignments.  These contract positions can provide valuable work experience and help you meet the employment requirement of your OPT period. And sometimes, when you're a good fit for the team, you may have a chance to convert your contract role into a full-time opportunity. 3. consider reaching out to your professors for an offer letter that can potentially be considered an OPT job opportunity. Your professors may have research projects or other academic initiatives where they could hire you as a research assistant or provide you with a job offer letter. This can be a valuable experience and help you fulfill the employment requirement during your OPT period. 4. explore the possibility of building your own business and working on OPT. Remember, these are options for you to pause the OPT clock in your first year after graduation while looking for a full-time job at your dream company. For STEM international students who are on OPT and when you're approaching your STEM extension, your employers must be e-verified in order to utilize your STEM OPT for work in the US.   To check whether the employer is verified or not, check out the link I provided in the caption below. Use the E-Verify search tool below to find employers who are currently enrolled in E-Verify. https://www.e-verify.gov/about-e-verify/e-verify-data/how-to-find-participating-employers  Let's listen to this episode to receive more information on how to stop your OPT unemployment allowance clock. Today I dive into a key component of encouraging more positive behavior through the use of consequences.  You probably already know consequences can be confusing and hard to get right when your child is misusing substances and struggles with mental health issues. They're sometimes hard to be consistent with, and often backfire.Chapter 11 in the book Beyond Addiction is the base for the information shared in this episode and outlines four ways you can go about using consequences with your son or daughter - however, only three are recommended. It's a snack-sized lesson on a really confusing topic, so lace up for a quick walk or hop in the car and listen in to get some practical strategies you can start using today. Learn about our private online community for moms, The Stream, and our new community for dads, The WoodsFind us on Instagram: @the.stream.communityDownload my free e-book, HINDSIGHT: Three Things I Wish I Knew When My Son Was Misusing DrugsJoin my email list

489: Four Strategies For Building Confidence In Being A New Leader

THE Leadership Japan Series by Dale Carnegie Training Tokyo, Japan

We work long, diligently and hard.  We are recognised for our devotion and the quality of our output and get promoted.  Instead of being solely responsible for our own results, we are now in charge of our colleagues and we are accountable for their results too.  If we stride around like the boss and are bossy, we are likely to hit some turbulence from the led.  If we are a cream puff, walking around on egg shells, we may be ignored and not taken seriously.  Who knew this leadership gig was so tricky? Imposter syndrome, self-doubt, fraudster misgivings are all crowding our mind as we try to navigate this new role.  We have to be confident without appearing too confident.  Given we are not confident at all, this is a hard needle to thread.  Here are four strategies for helping to build our confidence as a new leader. Self-Acceptance Perfectionism is a curse for the new leader, yet it is a natural goal, as we want to prove that the trust which has been placed in us, has not been misguided.  We get into comparison-itis where we see ourselves not measuring up to the abilities of experienced, senior leaders.  We feel a thousand beady eyes boring holes into us, as everyone observes how we go about this new role and we worry we are not matching their expectations.  We go straight to our weaknesses and skill gaps and we focus on those. What we have forgotten is that we got promoted because we have ability and that ability didn't suddenly rise from the sea on Day One of our working career.  We have been building up our experience and skills over many years and we should expect that becoming a seasoned and capable leader will also take time.  We know how to produce results for ourselves and so we probably have a reasonable idea on how to help our team members reach their targets.  If we honestly believe that in the success of our team members lies our own success, we will have the right mindset.  When the team feel we are working to help them succeed their attitude will become positive and we don't have to try and pretend we are someone we are not.  We can be ourselves, relax and accept that given some time we can be effective as the leader of the team and we can confident that we can get there. Self-Respect We all tend to live our lives like that Japanese art called bonseki where miniature landscapes are created out of sand and then the whole thing is thrown away.  We don't take the time to appreciate our achievements, because we have cast those aside and are now on to the next big thing, always seeking the grasp the brass ring.  However, when we reflect on our successes in our lives to date, our perspective about who we are and what we are capable of changes. We start to see patterns about our work ethic, our people skills, our communication capabilities and a myriad other elements, which will become the critical building blocks to make sure we are a successful leader.  We realise we have these elements already within us and now we are just pointing them in a new direction.  We have a strong enough grounding in our work careers to establish a base on which we can build further.  That realisation is a long way from the self-doubt and paralysis we may have felt on being told we are going to have this new responsibility.  It is important we shift our mindset to the positive and the history of achievements we have accumulated so far. Take Risks One of the dangers of getting promoted is you can also get fired more easily.  Before you were in total charge of your results and you could devote your time and effort to hitting your targets.  Now you find you have actually very little control over the production of results by your team.  In Year One you can keep doing your work and be the biggest contributor to the team results.  You can probably keep this up just in Year Two.  By Year Three the targets will have moved up to a point where you alone cannot do enough reach them. When you start missing team targets, the big bosses conclude you were not up to snuff in this new role and they replace you with someone else and the cycle starts again. You realise too late you should have been spending your time helping the team to get better, to hit their targets, to produce the results themselves.  You have been doing the fishing for them, instead of teaching them how to catch fish. It is a risk to step up, but we have to reduce that risk by approaching the leadership role in such a way that we are working through the team to reach results. Self-Talk Self-doubt generates a certain self-talk which is negative and not helping.  We need to get control of our inner dialogue pretty smartly and really monitor the quality of the thoughts rattling around inside our brains.  A very good way to achieve this is to start watching,  listening to and reading content which helps us to feel more confident about ourselves.  Search out the self-help gurus, the motivators, the boosters and start absorbing their messages.  Toxicity loves a vacuum and if we don't fill our minds with the right content, then the rust of self-doubt will start to creep in.  We cannot allow that to happen, so from the very day we are told we are now a leader, we need to start assembling our protective walls for keep our self-talk and mindset positive. These four strategies will definitely make a difference in establishing the inner-confidence that you can become a successful leader and in time, a great leader.

Creating a strategy for your ministry or business may sound like a complicated, overwhelming thing. And who needs one more overwhelming thing on their plate right now? But when you break it down into four key areas, and keep things simple, you'll get all the benefits of a strategy, without the overwhelm. Let's see what that looks like.On the last episode of Just One Simple Thing, we talked about strategy. We broke it down into a simple formula to wrap our heads around .... Purpose + a Plan + a System = A Strategy. If you missed it, go back to Episode 75 and listen to a Biblical example and a modern-day example of how that breaks down. A strategy is more than something you just write down in your planner and check back on a few times a year. It's an important tool that can simplify things for you if you use it right. When you have taken the time to create a good strategy, that strategy will act as a filter. It also helps you stay focused and saves time. And when you are using it as a filter and to stay focused, you'll have more confidence in your decisions and stop second guessing everything.Four strategies that you need for your business or ministry.1. Marketing Strategy2. Content Strategy3. Financial Strategy4. Administrative StrategyI know that sounds like a LOT ... but really, it's not so bad. In this episode, listen as I talk about how important it is to create traction and how to be consistent in doing it, to be truly indistractable.   Highlights:  ✅ We have to live intentionally to have traction.    ✅ You have to do and commit to what you say you would do. ✅ Never stop pursuing your future self.  Four Strategies on How to Become Indistractable:  ✅ Master your internal triggers.  ✅ Make time for tractions.  ✅ Hack back external triggers. ✅ Prevent distraction by using pre-commitment.  Check out Nir Eyal's books, Indistractable: How to Control Your Attention and Choose Your Life and Hooked: How to Build Habit-Forming Products!

In this episode, listen as Nir Eyal and I discuss how to become indistractable and how this can help you realise who you want to become–your future self. Highlights:  ✅ There is so much comfort in blaming the thing that is distracting you, if you don't know the root cause of the distraction.   ✅ The brain doesn't do what feels good, the brain does what felt good. It creates a memory or association of what felt good in the past so that we desire it again in the future.  ✅ Successful people lean on discomfort and use it to move forward, to be better.
