With her passion for life, history, and story, Liz Tolsma is the author of several novels ranging from World War II to Amish fiction. While she thought she'd write one book and be done, her debut novel was a finalist for two awards. Now she's a full-time author and editor, and she has never looked back. She joins us today to share about topics close to her heart, and to introduce her latest release, When the Sky Burned. A Word of Inspiration Liz Tolzma's writing journey began much like other authors—at a young age with a vivid imagination and an innate knack for storytelling. Dubbed "Sarah Bernhardt" by her parents due to her flair for drama, Liz was encouraged by a supportive fifth-grade teacher who instilled the dream of becoming a published author. Adoption: A Theme Close to the Heart A big passion for Liz centers around the theme of international adoption. She and her husband have welcomed three children into their family from different corners of the world, embedding rich experiences and diverse cultures into their lives. Liz speaks passionately about how adoption mirrors God's unconditional love and adoption of us, reflecting how it has shaped her as both a mother and a writer. Overlooked History Brought to Life "When the Sky Burned," Liz's latest novel, captures the essence of historical fiction by intertwining real events with an inspiring story. Set against the backdrop of the lesser-known Peshtigo Fire of 1871, Liz carefully balances historical accuracy with the fictional journeys of her characters. Mariah Randolph embodies resilience as she transitions from an artist to a survivor of blindness. Inspired by real stories of blind painters, Liz weaves a narrative that highlights resilience, transformation, and justice. What's Next for Liz Tolsma? Continuing with her theme of stories based on real-life events, Liz is excited to be writing a fictionalized version of a reader's family history from World War II. Readers can connect with her through her website, newsletter, GoodReads, Instagram, Facebook, Pinterest, X, and her own podcast. Enjoy a series of 6 exciting novels featuring historic disasters that transformed landscapes and multiple lives. Whether by nature or by man, these disasters changed history and were a day to be remembered. Promising painter Mariah Randolph longs to have her canvases displayed in the world's best museums, and Hollis Stanford, the heir of a railroad tycoon, is her ticket to success. The railroad's bookkeeper, Jay Franklin, discovers discrepancies and is convinced that Hollis is stealing from the company. But any proof of his dirty dealings go up in smoke when fire utterly destroys the town of Peshtigo, Wisconsin, October 8, 1871. The fire leaves Mariah blind, but Jay befriends her and even helps her to start painting again. But a trip to Chicago to return Hollis's daughter to him could put both Mariah and Jay in more danger than even the fire that devastated the town and their lives. In her second Outlaw Hearts novel, Woodley skillfully corrals the tension of a showdown at high noon, complex characters, fastidious historical research, and a mystery with all the twists of a gnarled tumbleweed into a tale sure to whisk readers away on a wild ride into a hope-filled sunset. This Sunday we will celebrate Palm Sunday and also wrap up our sermon series on the life of Joseph. What does Joseph have to do with Palm Sunday? Actually, quite a lot. The final episode in the life of Joseph is an amazing foreshadowing of what Jesus himself eventually did at the end of his life -- and contains a profound spiritual lesson for each of us.
In this week's Ministry Minute, we explore the powerful theme of "Beauty From Ashes." No matter the challenges you face, remember that God has the ability to transform your circumstances for the better. Join us as we delve into this uplifting message and discover the hope that lies within.
Pain is something we all encounter, but it's never wasted in the hands of God. Many of us have walked through seasons of heartbreak, loss, or suffering, wondering if anything good could ever come from it. But Scripture is clear—God specializes in bringing beauty from the ashes of our lives. He takes what seems broken beyond repair and turns it into a testimony of His grace. Our springboard for today's discussion is: Isaiah 61:3 – "To grant to those who mourn in Zion—to give them a beautiful headdress instead of ashes, the oil of gladness instead of mourning, the garment of praise instead of a faint spirit."Consider Joseph, who was betrayed, imprisoned, and forgotten. Yet, in the end, he declared to his brothers, "You meant evil against me, but God meant it for good" (Genesis 50:20). His suffering became the very thing God used to save countless lives. Or think of Job, who lost everything, yet in the end, God restored him and revealed Himself in a deeper way.Our trials, when surrendered to God, become powerful tools to minister to others. The wounds we once thought would destroy us become the very marks that prove God's healing power. When we share our testimonies of God's faithfulness through suffering, we give others hope that their pain has purpose too.Call To Action:If you're in the middle of a storm, don't let despair define your story. Trust that God is working behind the scenes. Spend time in prayer, seek His presence, and ask Him to reveal His purpose in your pain.Encouragement and Question of the Day:God doesn't just heal—He redeems. How has God used a painful experience in your life to bring about something beautiful?Let's Pray:Father, we bring You our brokenness and our struggles, trusting that You will turn them into something beautiful. We never want to take away from what God is able to do. We never want to discourage believers from seeking God's intervention in our lives. But when we visit passages for other callings, we have to be careful. We must discern those things which speak of God's abilities and God's attributes. But that is quit a different matter than claiming things for ourselves that are neither directly given to us nor are they for our calling and age.We have previously looked at passages in the the Psalms and in the Prophets, today we turn to Isaiah 61. #theology #christan #biblestudyLiving in the ParenthesisThe Age of the Silence of GodWalking According to Our Calling in the Current Age
We would love to hear from you! Text us any feedback. Alex Woldhuis never expected to be sitting in a hospital room while doctors told her that her three-year-old son Nick had leukemia. What began as puzzling symptoms—persistent low-grade fevers, unusual fatigue, and mysterious spots under his skin—rapidly escalated into a diagnosis that would transform their family's life. With remarkable candor, Alex shares the raw emotional journey from those first alarming signs through the chaotic first days of treatment, when within hours they faced blood transfusions and learned their little boy would need surgery and chemotherapy the very next day.Behind every medical crisis lies a deeply human story, and Alex's narrative reveals both the crushing weight of childhood cancer and the surprising strength parents discover within themselves. What makes her perspective truly unique is her deliberate choice to reject fear-based living despite the diagnosis. Against conventional advice, she allowed Nick to continue swimming, attending events, and experiencing childhood joys whenever he felt well enough—decisions that helped preserve his emotional wellbeing alongside his medical treatment. The practical wisdom she offers about advocating for your child within medical systems provides invaluable guidance for any parent navigating a health challenge.Perhaps most powerful is Alex's spiritual journey through this ongoing trial. Having previously endured significant personal losses, including the death of her sister at a young age, Alex approached Nick's diagnosis with an unexpected peace and profound faith perspective. "I know you're not wasting my pain," she prayed, believing purpose would emerge even from suffering. This faith has transformed her parenting approach with all three children, incorporating daily gratitude practices and intentional conversations about God's presence even in hospital rooms. For anyone walking through darkness—whether a medical crisis or any profound challenge—Alex's story offers a compelling testament to how community support, parental advocacy, and unwavering faith can create moments of beauty even in life's most difficult seasons.Book:https://amzn.to/3DYHR2DSuggested Follows for Information:https://www.instagram.com/dagmarabeine?igsh=eGFjeHFlcHY3MGNjhttps://www.instagram.com/draonline?igsh=MXRmcGt3d2JqMnAxbQ==https://www.instagram.com/seasonjohnson?igsh=MXZ0dWNnNWx4aDc1ag==JOIN ME ON SOCIAL MEDIA:Follow Along @ - https://www.instagram.com/nikkicronksmith/
Jessica Ronne has endured more heartache than most can even fathom. She found out when she was pregnant with her second son that he'd had a stroke in utero and would be profoundly disabled if she carried him to term. She and her husband made the decision to carry him to full term and let God handle the details. Lucas does have those disabilities, but Jess and her husband never wished they'd made a different choice. Then, several years and two more children later, Jess's husband was diagnosed with a brain tumor and passed away at the age of 33, leaving her to take care of their four small children. But God didn't leave her in her grief. She met a wonderful man, a widower with three children and they married, blended their families and even added one more to the mix. Even though Jess has a hard story, she's used her experience to create The Lucas Foundation, a non-profit dedicated to serving parent caregivers with respite, recognition and resources. She is also the associate producer of the documentary Unseen and the author of four books, including her most recent, Caregiving with Grit and Grace. Jessica's pain led her to create resources to help others, because she understands what it means to be in an unfamiliar world of grief and caregiving, not knowing how to navigate it all. Her relationship with Jesus is even stronger today than when she was a young mom because she learned to lean on Him, and even question Him, through it all. Even though her story is hard, she fought her way through it and made it to the other side to let you know whatever you're going through, God's got you. The Bible says in 2 Corinthians 1:4 that “He comforts us in all our troubles, so that we can comfort those in any trouble with the comfort we ourselves receive from God.” Here's Jess' story... You may remember the testimony we shared from Brad and Anne. Their situation looked impossible. Brad was in prison both spiritually and physically. He surrendered his life to God and saw his life and marriage restored. Since their restoration, Anne wrote a book sharing the work God did in their lives. We sat down with Brad and Anne and got an update on life since we last spoke. Stay tuned after our talk, and you will hear their original testimony. Beauty from Ashes Book
