LET'S PRETEND- Let's Pretend started radio life as The Adventures of Helen and Mary in 1934 when it was transformed by Nila Mack into the show that would last for two decades until 1954. Mack believed that, if the stories were for children, then children should tell the story. On July 12, 1947, they told the tale of "The Brave Little Tailor" for sponsor, Cream of Wheat. A meek little man has "killed seven with one blow" and has everyone terrified. ROMANCE - Actor Henry Fonda stars in "Casanova Brown" on ROMANCE from November 13, 1945.Romance_1945-11-13_Casanova_Brown_wHenryFonda 24:45 People are Funny - was a long-running American radio and television game show, created by John Guedel that remained popular throughout the 1940s. The program ran from 1942 to 1960. The program's stunts and audience participation were calculated to reveal the humorous side of human nature. After contestants were sent from the studio to perform a task in public, the audience was told how the contestant was being double-crossed. Hosted by Art Linkletter, here is a show from January 17, 1956 Whisperer. July 08, 1951. NBC net. Sustaining. The first show of the series. "The Whisperer" is a brilliant young attorney with a secret identity. He tackles the plans of Scurelli to sell marijuana to the unsuspecting youth of the city. Enjoy two free comedy episodes of Fibber McGee & Molly w/ Jim and Marian Jordan A) 2/17/48 Book Nook B) 6/1/48 Fibber's Tune Fibber McGee & Molly had a long and successful run on radio (1935-1959). The program showcased terrific comic and musical talent. Headlined by its co-creators and stars, Jim and Marian Jordan, they were a real-life husband and wife team that had been working in radio since the 1920s. Living in the fictional Midwestern town of Wistful Vista, Fibber was an American teller of tall tales and lovable braggart, usually to the exasperation of his long-suffering wife, Molly. Life in Wistful Vista followed a well-developed formula, but was always fresh. Fibber's weekly schemes would be interrupted, inspired by, and often played upon the people of Wistful Vista. Regular characters included Mayor LaTrivia, Doc Gamble, Mrs. Uppington, Wallace Wimple, Alice Darling, Beulah, Myrt, the Old Timer and Fibber's next-door neighbor, Throckmorton P. Gildersleeve (the Gildersleeve character would be spun-off into its own successful radio series, The Great Gildersleeve). Fibber McGee & Molly began as a comic reflection of Depression Era America, but as time went on and the shadows of war came over the nation, the show again caught the mood of the country. WWII was fought on the home front at Wistful Vista as surely as anywhere else in America, but here they had the benefit of Fibber's somewhat addled perspective. In the peak of the show's success in the 1940s, it was adapted for the silver screen in a series of feature films. An attempt to bring the series to TV in 1959 with a different cast and new writers was both a critical and commercial failure proving that success in one medium is no guarantee of success in another.

Fibber gets a letter from the Postmaster General. It seems that the government wants a questionaire returned to tell how the mail service is performing in Wistful Vista. Fibber's first responce is to complain, but Molly talks sense to him, and to tell that things are fine.   The Old Timer visits, and he agrees with Molly that the US Postal Service is doing a fine job. He tells about his father, and his picture that hung in the Post Office.   A public service announcement proclaims the merits of stamping out bigotry, and promoting diversity.   Fibber keeps trying to find fault with the quality of the postal service. As Molly leaves the room to take care of a household chore, Teeny visits. Hey, how come Teeny always visits when Molly leaves anyway?   Fibber talks with Teeny about the mail service, still trying to find points to complain about. .   Doc Gamble visits, and Fibber picks his brain about trying to find any problems with their mail delivery. Doc gets a kick out of Fibber having to break down and write something nice. Finally though, Fibber does get his complaint when Doc Gamble points out the date the letter was sent.   Bonus Tracks: Lulu Belle and Scoty. Down By The Railroad Track. Cab Calloway. 1947. Just 2 Blocksdown, Turn Left. Bob Hope and Judy Garland. 1943. A comedy bit about Judy's ideal of a boyfriend.   PS: The show is a bit short, probably due to being from an AFRS recording. The AFRS didn't, and still doesn't allow commercials and they had to be cut. In their place, Public Service announcements are inserted. In today's show, the open and closing credits have also been snipped short. All contributing for a short show, so the Retrobots have had a chance to play a little bit.     For more great Old Time Radio visit the home page at: http://retro-otr.com
