Len Ferman's new book, The 1973 Mets - You've Got to Believe, is a day to day saga about a Mets team that that rallied from last place with a 61-71 record on August 31 to win the National League East with an 82-79 record. The Eastern Division race that year saw five teams still in the hunt for the title in the season's final week. In the end, the Mets won the title outright on the season's final day with just 5 games separating the champs from the fifth place Chicago Cubs. The Mets shocked the 99-win Cincinnati Reds in the five-game NL Championship series then stretched the Oakland A's, the defending World Series champs, to seven games before coming up short. The team featured the great Willie Mays in his final season and future Hall of Famer Tom Seaver, the 1973 NL Cy Young Award winner. Dear John Angelos, How ya doing? Seriously, how are you feeling these days? It doesn't stink to be you, lately, not by a longshot. And yet, you seem to be doing your best Eyesore impersonation by casting a pall on the situation, publicly and apparently privately. In theory, it must be great to be the CEO of the Baltimore Orioles. Your team is the toast of the baseball world, riding high atop the toughest division in the game and you are a pen stroke away from $600 million in state funds. But while every Orioles fan is breathlessly awaiting a playoff run in October, he or she is also anxiously waiting for you to sign a new long term lease that binds the Birds to Camden Yards well into the future. You let the first deadline to sign a five-year extension pass in February, theoretically, to continue negotiating with the Maryland Stadium Authority. The current lease expires December 31 and you can take the team anywhere you want after that. Surely you know, John, that sports fans in this town have a particular paranoia, entirely justified, when it comes to their teams coming and going. They've watched the Bullets and Colts bolt Baltimore for other locales, leaving the city high and dry. It's the hook of civic pride your father, Peter, used 30 years ago when he convened a group to buy the Orioles out of bankruptcy court from Eli Jacobs. The idea was that a group of Baltimore-based investors would do everything it could to keep their Birds here. Perhaps it's to keep leverage that is keeping you from signing a lease that would do just that. Of course, saying that doesn't give you the benefit of the doubt, but then, you haven't done or said much recently to earn that. To wit, you reportedly held up negotiations to get a more favorable partner, namely the new governor, Wes Moore, your buddy, to whose campaign you made a sizable contribution. In January and again during spring training, you promised to open the team's books so the public could assess the Orioles' financial situation, the one where the team's payroll is $70 million, 28th out of 30 Major League clubs. That hasn't happened, yet, you told the New York Times last week that a team should quote live within your means and within your market unquote. You added that without favorable financial terms, the Orioles would have to raise prices dramatically to keep young stars like Adley Rutschman or Gunnar Henderson. What you've left out is that the Orioles took in $264 million in revenues last year, according to Statista. Yes, it's dramatically less than the Yankees and Red Sox, their Eastern Division rivals, but not exactly chopped liver. Those numbers are bound to rise this year, what with higher attendance, which leads to more ticket revenue. And a new lease would bring an infusion of those state funds to renovate Camden Yards. Let me close this letter with a few words of friendly advice: Do us all a favor. Sign the lease. And if that's not enough to get you feeling better, take the next step: Sell the club. It will relieve stress on everyone, most of all you. And that's how I see it for this week. You can reach us via email with your questions and comments at Sports at Large at gmail.com. And follow me on Threads and Twitter at Sports at Large. Until next week, for all of us here, I'm Milton Kent. The civil rights lawsuit is against The City of Akron, its mayor, chief of police, and individual officers involved (directly and indirectly) in the shooting which took Jayland Walker's life. The prayer for “judgement for relief” in the lawsuit against the defendants jointly and severally is for not less than $45 million. $1 million for each bullet that struck Jayland.Along those lines, as education is always a crucial aspect of Light ‘Em Up — as a case study we'll showcase and share with you the fact pattern in Tennessee v Garner — as we feel that case is highly relevant to the case of Jayland Walker.Tennessee v Garner is a landmark U.S. Supreme Court case from 1984 which required the high court to determine the constitutionality of the use of deadly force to prevent the escape of an apparently unarmed suspected felon. In this exclusive episode we'll:♦ Highlight the details of the lawsuit filed.♦ Explore and investigate the issue of excessive force and drill deep to see if the civil rights of Jayland Walker were violated under the color of authority by members of the Akron Police Department.♦ Disclose more details from the BCI Report.♦ Discuss aspects of The Civil Rights Act of 1871— which is a federal statute, 42 U.S.C. §1983—that allows people to sue the government for civil rights violations.♦ And, we are very excited to be able to share exclusive audio from the U.S. Supreme Court in the case of Tennessee v Garner, 471 U.S. 1 (1985) with Chief Justice Earl Warren presiding.Much of our listenership comes from people just like yourself who know the value of fact-based, well-researched reporting that demands transparency from the most powerful people and institutions in our country. You can enjoy our podcast at work, home or at play. What was Abscam? In this episode we try an answer that question for those of you who may not remember, or be as familiar with, what many will recall was the second biggest political scandal of the 1970's and early 1980's.  It involved six United States Congressman and one United States Senator.  They were :US Senator Harrison A. Williams (D-NJ)US Representative Frank Thompson (D-NJ)US Representative John Jenrette (D-SC)US Representative Raymond Lederer (D-PA)US Representative Michael "Ozzie" Myers (D-PA)US Representative John M. Murphy (D-NY)US Representative Richard Kelly (R-FL)It was basically a criminal sting operation conducted by the FBI using a known conman, Mel Weinberg, to set up various elected officials at several levels of the Government. It is the same scandal used for the basis of the movie " American Hustle". It was not just Congressman but also 23 other elected and governmental officials who were eventually netted into the criminal takedown. It also included one member of the New Jersey State Senate, members of the Philadelphia City Council, the Mayor of Camden, New Jersey, and an inspector for the United States Immigration and Naturalization Service who  were all also convicted. The operation was directed from the FBI's office in Hauppauge, New York, and was under the supervision of Assistant Director Neil J. Welch, who headed the bureau's New York Division, and Thomas P. Puccio, head of the Justice Department's Organized Crime Task Force for the Eastern Division of New York.In all of these cases it stemmed from an investigation into theft, forgery, and stolen art. The FBI enlisted the help of a convicted conman to help them run a sting on criminals but as they made their way up the food chain they found they could nab some high ranking elected officials. All of the elected officials were somehow connected to this investigation. All but one. That one case that was the exception was the case of Representative John Jenrette of the 6th District of South Carolina, OUR CONGRESSMAN. In this episode you will hear from the conman himself, you will listen in as the FBI moves in on the congressmen in question, and you will listen in just as the nation did as all of this unfolded. Ironically, the only story they rarely  talked about in this early stage of the game, will be the story of John Jenrette, and as we will show you there are reasons for that.  Questions or comments at , Randalrgw1@aol.com , https://twitter.com/randal_wallace , and http://www.randalwallace.com/Please Leave us a review at wherever you get your podcastsThanks for listening!!

Next we talked about Boomer's sports minute where he graded players and gave Zach Wilson an F. Why did Boomer give him an F? Jerry returns for an update but first we talked about the NYC Marathon which is this Sunday. The Astros threw a combined no hitter to beat the Phillies. Jerry has audio from a few Astros players and Dusty Baker. The Knicks lost to Atlanta. Kyrie Irving issued a sort of apology with the Nets. Kanye put out a pic of Kyrie in support on his social media. Joe Schoen was on Tiki & Tierney and talked about Saquon and Daniel Jones' future with the Giants. Bill Belichick vs reporters again. In the final segment of the hour, Al made a mistake with the coffee machine. A caller is not happy with Kyrie's attempt at an apology. Hour 3: Listening to Joe Schoen on with Tiki & Tierney it was nice to hear a confident GM being honest with the media. Schoen seems to want to keep Saquon on the Giants. Boomer says it will all depend on what Saquon sees as his worth. Boomer says he's the type of guy you would invest in, the question is how much for a RB. It doesn't make sense to give Saquon or Daniel Jones an extension eight games into a season. Boomer said he was always an Eli supporter and always respected him. Gio calls B.S. on that one. Jerry returns for an update but first Gio tells us about a co-worker who's windshield was destroyed by a homeless man who threw a garbage can into it. And then actor Paul Rudd walked up to the scene to check out Pete's car. The Astros threw a combined no hitter against the Phillies in the World Series last night. The Knicks lost to Atlanta and they had bad body language in the loss. The Giants definitely seem interested in OBJ. Joe Flacco was surprised and disappointed to be moved down on the depth chart. In the final segment of the hour, it looks like that slimeball Daniel Snyder will be selling the Washington Commanders. Would the Johnsons ever sell the Jets?  Hour 4: We recapped the Kyrie, Nets and Anti-Defamation League statement and ‘apology' that was released yesterday. Gio says Kyrie is not being punished at all for this. Gio calls the Nets the most unlikeable team he's ever seen. Gio says you won't hear from Kyrie Irving on this for a month. Jerry returns for an update but first we talk about Elon Musk's Twitter verification. We also wondered why Eddie still has a box of Junk Balm under his desk. The Phillies got no hit last night in the World Series by 4 Astros pitchers. In the final segment of the hour, we go over the Bad News Draft.

Pat Toomey (R-PA): Here's what you need to keep in mind, Jake. First of all, this is the oldest trick in Washington. People take a sympathetic group of Americans — it could be children with an illness, it could be victims of crime, it could be veterans who have been exposed to toxic chemicals — craft a bill to address their problems, and then sneak in something completely unrelated that they know could never pass on its own and dare Republicans to do anything about it because they know they'll unleash their allies in the media and maybe a pseudo-celebrity to make up false accusations to try to get us to just swallow what shouldn't be there. That's what's happening here, Jake. 10:40 Jake Tapper: So one of the questions that I think people have about what you're claiming is a budgetary gimmick is, the VA budgets will always remain subject to congressional oversight, they can't just spend this money any way they want. And from how I read this legislation, it says that this money has to be spent on health care for veterans who suffered exposure from toxic burned pits. Sen. Pat Toomey (R-PA): This is why they do this sort of thing, Jake, because it gets very deep in the weeds and very confusing for people very quickly. It's not really about veteran spending. It's about what category of government bookkeeping, they put the veterans spending in. My change, the honest people acknowledge it will have no effect on the amount of money or the circumstances under which the money for veterans is being spent. But what I want to do is treat it, for government accounting purposes, the way we've always treated it for government accounting purposes. Because if we change it to the way that the Democrats want, it creates room in future budgets for $400 billion of totally unrelated, extraneous spending on other matters. Senator Toomey on Face the Nation with John Dickerson July 31, 2022 CBS News Clips 4:10 John Dickerson: 123 Republicans in the House voted for this, 34 Senate Republicans voted for it. Same bill. This week, the bill didn't change but the Republican votes did. Why? Sen. Pat Toomey (R-PA): Now, the Republican votes didn't change on the substance of the bill. Republicans have said we want an amendment to change a provision that has nothing to do with veterans health care. The Republicans support this. The Democrats added a provision that has nothing to do with veterans health care, and it's designed to change government accounting rules so that they can have a $400 billion spending spree. 6:25 Sen. Pat Toomey (R-PA): Honest Democrats evaluating this will tell you: if my amendment passes, not a dime change in spending on veterans programs. What changes is how the government accounts for it. John Dickerson: I understand, but the accounting change, as you know, is a result — the reason they put it in that other bucket is that it doesn't subject it to the normal triage of budgeting. And the argument is that the values at stake here are more important than leaving it to the normal cut and thrust of budgeting. Jon's Response To Ted Cruz's PACT Act Excuses July 29, 2022 The Problem with Jon Stewart on Youtube Clips 00:20 Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX): What the dispute is about is the Democrats played a budgetary trick, which is they took $400 billion in discretionary spending and they shifted it to a mandatory one. Jon Stewart: What Ted Cruz is describing is inaccurate, not true, bulls ** t. This is no trick. Everything in the government is either mandatory or discretionary spending depending on which bucket they feel like putting it in. The whole place is basically a f * ing shell game. And he's pretending that this is some new thing that the Democrats pulled out, stuck into the bill, and snuck it past one Ted Cruz. Now I'm not a big-city Harvard educated lawyer, but I can read. It's always been mandatory spending so that the government can't just cut off their funding at any point. No trick, no gimmick, [it's] been there the whole f**king time. 1:50 Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX): What's the Republicans made clear is, if we leave that spending as discretionary — don't play the budgetary trick — the bill will pass with 80 or 90 votes. Jon Stewart: I don't know how many other ways to say this, but there was no budgetary trick and it was always mandatory. And when they voted in the Senate on June 16, they actually got 84 votes. And you know who voted for that? Ted f*cking Cruz and every other one of those Republicans that switched their votes. There was no reason for them to switch the votes. The bill that passed the Senate 84 to 14 on June 16 has not had one word added to it by Democrats, or spending fairies, or anybody else. It's the same f*cking bill. ‘I Call Bullshit!' Jon on the PACT Act Being Blocked in the Senate July 28, 2022 The Problem with John Stewart on YouTube Clips 3:20 Jon Stewart: June 16, they passed the PACT Act 84 to 14. You don't even see those scores in the Senate anymore. They passed it. Every one of these individuals that has been fighting for years, standing on the shoulders of Vietnam veterans who have been fighting for years, standing on the shoulders of Persian Gulf War veterans fighting for years, Desert Storm veterans, to just get the health care and benefits that they earn from their service. And I don't care if they were fighting for our freedom. I don't care if they were fighting for the flag. I don't care if they were fighting because they wanted to get out of a drug treatment center, or it was jail or the army. I don't give a shit. They lived up to their oath. And yesterday, they spit on it in abject cruelty. These people thought they could finally breathe. You think their struggles end because the PACT Act passes? All it means is they don't have to decide between their cancer drugs and their house. Their struggle continues. From the crowd: This bill does a lot more than just give us health care. Jon Stewart: It gives them health care, gives them benefits, lets them live. From the crowd: Keeps veterans from going homeless keeps veterans from become an addict, keeps veterans from committing suicide. Jon Stewart: Senator Toomey is not going to hear that because he won't sit down with this man. Because he is a fucking coward. You hear me? A coward. 5:15 Jon Stewart: Pat Toomey stood up there — Patriot Pat Toomey, excuse me, I'm sorry. I want to give him his propers, I want to make sure that I give him his propers. Patriot Pat Toomey stood on the floor and said “this is a slush fund, they're gonna use $400 billion to spend on whatever they want.” That's nonsense. I call bullshit. This isn't a slush fund. You know, what's a slush fund? The OSO, the Overseas Contingency Operations Fund. $60 billion, $70 billion every year on top of $500 billion, $600 billion, $700 billion of a defense budget. That's a slush fund, unaccountable. No guardrails? Did Pat Toomey stand up and say, this is irresponsible. The guard rails? No, not one of them. Did they vote for it year after year after year? You don't support the troops. You support the war machine. 7:10 Jon Stewart: And now they say, “Well, this will get done. Maybe after we get back from our summer recess, maybe during the lame duck…” because they're on Senate time. Do you understand? You live around here. Senate time is ridiculous. These motherfuckers live to 200 — they're tortoises. They live forever and they never lose their jobs and they never lose their benefits and they never lose all those things. Well, [sick veterans are] not on Senate time. They're on human time. Cancer time. 8:20 Jon Stewart: I honestly don't even know what to say anymore. But we need your help, because we're not leaving. These people cannot go away. I don't know if you know this, you know, obviously, I'm not a military expert. I didn't serve in the military, but from what I understand, you're not allowed to just leave your post when the mission isn't completed. Apparently you take an oath, you swear an oath, and you can't leave, that these folks can leave because they're on Senate time. Go ahead, go home, spend time with your families, because these people can't do it anymore. So they can't leave until this gets done. Senator Toomey PACT Act Amendment Floor Speech July 26, 2022 Senate Session Representative Mark Takano PACT Act Floor Speech July 13, 2022 House Session 3:38:20 **Rep. Mark Takano (D-CA): The way this country has dealt with toxic exposure has been piecemeal and inadequate. President Biden recognizes this, too. Shortly after he was sworn in, I met with the President about our shared priorities for veterans. Upon learning of my goal to pass comprehensive legislation to help toxic-exposed veterans, the President leaned over to me and talked about his son, Beau, who served near burn pits in Iraq and Kosovo. It might be hard for most Americans to imagine what a burn pit looks like because they are illegal in the United States. Picture walking next to and breathing fumes from a burning pit the size of a football field. This pit contained everything from household trash, plastics, and human waste to jet fuel and discarded equipment burning day and night. Beau Biden lived near these burn pits and breathed the fumes that emanated from them. President Biden believes that con- stant exposure to these burn pits, and the toxic fumes they emitted, led to Beau's cancer and early death. It was during that meeting when I knew I had a partner in President Biden. The Million Dollar Game was the XFL's championship game at the end of its only season in 2001. At first it had no special name, then was going to be called "The Big Game at the End," but eventually received the name it ended up with because a pot of one million dollars was to be split among the players of the winning team. The game was played on Saturday April 21, 2001 at the LA Memorial Coliseum. The game was between the Western Division champion Los Angeles Xtreme and the western runner-up San Francisco Demons. The Xtreme defeated the Eastern Division runner-up Chicago Enforcers 33-16 in the first round while the Demons beat east champs Orlando Rage 26-25. Orlando had finished the 10-game regular season with the XFL's best record, 8-2. Los Angeles was 7-3 while both Chicago and San Francisco each finished 5-5 (Making Orlando and L.A. the only two of the eight teams to finish with winning records in the regular season; the Memphis Maniax were also 5-5 but San Francisco won the playoff berth on a tie-breaker). The Xtreme, led by regular-season Most Valuable Player Tommy Maddox, won the Million Dollar Game 38-6. The game's MVP was Xtreme kicker Jose Cortez, which was ironic considering the reduced role a kicker had in the XFL, which did not have a point after touchdown (extra point) kick in its rules and also paid kickers the least per game on its salary scale. After each had been released by National Football League teams earlier in their professional careers, both Maddox and Cortez eventually found themselves back in the NFL. Maddox signed with the Pittsburgh Steelers in 2001. He replaced Kordell Stewart in the 2002 season and led the Steelers into the playoffs. That performance earned NFL Comeback Player of the Year honors. Maddox lost his starting job to Ben Roethlisberger in 2005, and was released in 2006, however still became the first former XFL player to be a part of a Super Bowl champion after the Steelers won Super Bowl XL over the Seattle Seahawks. Cortez, however, has not enjoyed the degree of success Maddox has. Although he scored over 100 points in the 2001 and 2002 NFL seasons, he has mostly been a journeyman, called in to fill in for a team's injured kicker (For this reason, he played for four teams in 2005). The XFL paid standardized player salaries. Quarterbacks earned US$5,000 per week, kickers earned $3,500, and all other uniformed players earned $4,500 per week, though a few players got around these restrictions (Los Angeles Xtreme players Noel Prefontaine, the league's lone punting specialist, and Matt Malloy, a wide receiver) by having themselves listed as backup quarterbacks. Players on a winning team received a bonus of $2,500 for the week, $7,500 for winning a playoff game. The team that won the championship game split $1,000,000 (roughly $25,000 per player). Furthermore, players did not receive any fringe benefits, meaning players had to pay for their own health insurance.

Football and basketball fans, have no fear. Spring sports are here! With a full slate of competition across a number of sports over the past week, there is a lot to get to on episode 41 of the Bandwagon. It's been a busy week in the MAC universe! To open up this weeks pod, Zach and Sam break down the various headlines of the week from around the conference. The end of the women's soccer season has been marred by a bit of controversy, as Buffalo will not be afforded the opportunity for the MAC championship after losing the Eastern Division crown to Bowling Green. The Falcons edged out the Bulls based on win percentage, even though Buffalo bested BG in their only meeting of the season. As it stands, Bowling Green will take on Ball State on Saturday night with the MAC championship on the line. Best of luck to both squads. Elsewhere in the news this week, Stan Heath was named head men's basketball coach at Eastern Michigan. It was a move that has inspired hope in the Eagles fan base, as many hope EMU can return to their glory years of the 1990's. Also in hoops, MAC player of the year Marreon Jackson announced his commitment to Toledo, while CeCe Hooks and Gabby Burris both announced they would be returning to the Ohio women's program next year. This is huge news for the Bobcats, as they will certainly boast one of the most experienced line up's in the conference next year. Speaking of transfers, the conference also announced a change to their intra-conference transfer policy, allowing all athletes to transfer between MAC schools without sitting out a year. To lead of this weeks' spring sports wrap up, the boys highlight Bowling Greens hard fought loss in the first round of the NCAA Women's Volleyball tournament. The Falcons took on Weber State in Omaha, and ultimately ended up falling to the Wildcats 3 sets to 1. It was a disappointing end to a magical season for BG, as they won the MAC and made their first NCAA tournament appearance since 2012. On the baseball diamond, Ball State seems to be rounding into form, as the Cardinals are currently riding an 8 game win streak. Included in that streak is the Cardinals four game sweep of Akron this past weekend. Ball State currently sits atop the standings at 10-2 in MAC play, with Central Michigan, Miami, and Western Michigan hot on their heels. In softball, Ball State and Miami seem to be separating from the pack, as both currently own undefeated records in the conference. The highlight of this past weekends' action was Miami pitcher Courtney Vierstra. The senior turned in a no-hitter on Friday, only to follow that up with a perfect game on Sunday, leading the RedHawks to a weekend sweep of Akron. In men's soccer, it's a tight race coming into the final weekend of the season. Bowling Green, Western Michigan, West Virginia, and Akron all have a chance to capture the regular season title heading into the final games of the season. This weekends' Akron/Western Michigan game will be huge! The aforementioned MAC Swimming and Diving Championships will take place this weekend in Ypsilanti, as Akron looks to continue their dominance over the conference and capture their eighth straight crown. Ball State and Buffalo come in with hopes of knocking the Zips off their pedestal atop the conference. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices
