Back when I co-owned the restaurant chain Slice by Saddleback, I was looking for ways to increase the net income of the business. One of the things I became fascinated by was how sports stadiums would sell the naming rights to their stadiums as an advertisement to large businesses. Consider how many stadiums are named after companies, like the Staples Center or the DTE Energy Music Theatre. I thought, What if we could do that for a pizza?Opening restaurants requires a lot of cash. So when we were buying Detroit Frankies to open Slice by Saddleback, I thought this would be a perfect opportunity to sell the naming rights to fund the acquisition. How did Slice By Saddleback get MSUFCU to buy the naming rights to a pizza? We had a very good working relationship with Michigan State University Federal Credit Union (MSUFCU). However, I had never worked with anyone in their marketing department, so I went on LinkedIn and found their marketing director, Deidre. I was able to get her email address, and I sent her a simple email that said, I have a great advertising opportunity for you. I want to sell you the naming rights to one of my pizzas. In the email, I included some general statistics about how many people would see the advertisement, and I included the price of $10,000. She responded almost immediately, and we went back and forth a couple of times. We were able to make a deal, and I received a check for $10,000. If you go to Slice by Saddleback even today, you will notice that the dill pickle pizza is now called the Green and White Pizza Powered by MSUFCU. Not only was this incredibly profitable for the pizza places, but it was also, by my calculations, one of the most effective marketing and advertising placements that MSUFCU had done when you look at the reach it gave them and how many people saw it.The offer I made included renaming the pizza, displaying their logo in the menu, and listing the new name on all receipts and online ordering platforms. In addition, I guaranteed that we would use our social media platforms, which I believe had about 40,000 followers at the time, to post content that specifically mentioned The Green and White Pizza Powered by MSUFCU.This was a great source of profit for the pizza places especially because I had the foresight to do this as an annual advertising agreement. So, the next year, the price went up to $20,000. In total, so far, the pizza places have made more than $30,000 in pure net income with no cost at all.And not only did the restaurants get direct cash from the advertising sale which was all net income (profit), because of the partnership, MSUFCU promoted the pizza to their employees and to their 300,000 members! So they actually ended up doing advertising for us for free! They even paid to include us on a TV commercial that ran on the local broadcast of the Superbowl! In part because of this relationship. It was massively successful on all accounts. How much profit can a restaurant make by selling the naming rights to a menu item? Let's break down why this is so profitable. Everyone knows that restaurants are notoriously difficult businesses and don't have a very high profit margin in general. How a restaurant works is that 30% of the price of the food that you sell goes directly to the food cost or ingredient cost. Another 30% or more goes into the labor for the employees to make and serve the product. And then, on average, about 30% goes into overhead. A very profitable restaurant runs at about a 10% net profit margin. And of course, that doesn't always happen. Most restaurants I have looked at run at a net profit margin below 10%. As we all know, many restaurants don't make any money at all, and that's why you see so many restaurants fail. So, if you consider that it's only a 10% profit margin, that means that $10,000 from MSUFCU—or the $30,000 now—went directly to the bottom line, meaning it was pure profit, because there was no cost that went into it. So for the restaurant to make that $30,000 in profit, they would have had to sell a minimum of $300,000 in sales. To give you an idea of how much money that is, as I recall, one of the Slice locations' total sales for the entire year was about $500,000. That means that the $30,000 in advertising money from MSUFCU equated to more than half of the entire year's sales in net profit.Try to wrap your head around that. It means that all of the activities we did for more than half of the year—all of the staffing, all of the ordering food, all of the dealing with customer complaints, all of that time and effort—made less profit than the advertisement from MSUFCU did.The Lesson: Why Every Restaurant Owner Should Consider Selling the Naming Rights to a Menu ItemLet's face it—restaurants operate on razor-thin margins, making it crucial to find creative ways to generate profit. One innovative solution is selling the naming rights to a menu item. Just like stadiums and venues do, selling naming rights can create a unique advertising opportunity for local businesses, generate extra revenue, and build stronger community relationships. This approach not only brings in direct cash but also establishes long-term partnership and it enhanced brand visibility for both the restaurant and the business purchasing the naming rights.A big lesson here is that all business owners shouldn't chase sales just for the sake of sales. If Slice By Saddleback opened up a new restaurant location that generated a similar amount of sales, it would take between $50,000 and $100,000 minimum just to open. But that new location would only generate about $50,000 of net income per year. Whereas a simple sale of the naming rights to a menu item generated $10,000 in annual net income, for literally no work or headaches at all. I would take that everyday! I see it all the time—owners taking on new clients, starting new projects, or lowering prices just to boost sales & revenue. I've made the same mistake myself. But it's not about growing sales—it's about growing profit. Look for easy ways to grow profit. Sometimes it's better to say no to unprofitable clients or avoid adding new lines of business that are more hassle than they're worth. Focus on what's actually making you money, stick to your core business, and prioritize profit over everything else!If you enjoyed this, could you do me a huge favor and send it to two of your friends? That's all I ask. Just share it with someone that you think would get value out of it. Thank you! I want to hear from you! What do you think? Take the poll, comment below, or reply to this email. Pop culture and nostalgia play big roles in our lives -- the Pine Knob Music Theatre plays into both of those things. But, between 2001-2021, Pine Knob was known as DTE Energy Music Theatre. In this episode of 'Hello, Pine Knob', host Gary Graff sits down with 313 Presents President Howard Handler to talk about the decision to bring back the Pine Knob name.
In this Episode of Crue Cast, a podcast is all about the most infamous band in rock history Motley Crue! I, Jason the resident CrueHead share a snippet from an interview I did with Morgan Rose of Sevendust on the time he filled in for Tommy Lee during Cruefest 2. SEVENDUST drummer Morgan Rose filled in for Tommy Lee at MÖTLEY CRÜE's last three shows of Cruefest 2 in 2009. On August 14 at the Riverbend Music Center in Cincinnati, Ohio; August 15 at Clarkston, Michigan's DTE Energy Music Theatre; and August 16 at Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania's Post-Gazette Pavilion. Lee was off his kit for several Crüe Fest 2 shows after burning his left hand while playing with a set of sparklers. "Rose came charging in like a knight in shining armor" according to a note on bassist Nikki Sixx's MySpace page. Lee, who had his left thumb and forefinger wrapped in bandages, still took part in the shows, coming on first to explain his absence — "First of all, I suck. I was having fun and I burned myself," he told crowds at the various concerts— then handed a bottle of Jagermeister to the crowd and, during the encores, he played piano on "Home Sweet Home" and thumped on a drum with his right hand for "Girls, Girls, Girls", according to Billboard.com. The last time Lee was forced to sit out a MÖTLEY CRÜE gig was June 12, 2007 when he was he recovering from another arm ailment. EVANESCENCE/DARK NEW DAY drummer Will Hunt filled in for Lee at that show, although Tommy did manage to take to the kit for one number — the immortal "Kickstart My Heart". Between April 5 and 10, 1971, the band played eight shows at the celebrated venue (including two matinees) and recorded every one of them. In October of that year, performance highlights were featured on the band's first-ever live album, Chicago at Carnegie Hall. That quadruple-LP reached #3 on the Billboard 200, was certified platinum, and is still the band's best-selling live album. Their hard work paid off with eight fantastic-sounding shows. CHICAGO AT CARNEGIE HALL COMPLETE is presented in a white folio that's embossed with the group's trademark logo. The set beautifully commemorates the event through memorabilia that includes replicas of the three posters that accompanied the original vinyl release and images of the original concert program, tickets, and other memorabilia from the historic run. How being attentive to everything the customer says directly through survey responses, and indirectly through their behaviors and activities, is essential to understanding what they really want. Chris talks about being able to differentiate between the B2B and B2C customer, and the importance of understanding how each customer relates to the business through a different lens. The importance of having the pulse of the customer - understanding what they're thinking and where you may be coming up short or where you're doing well. The customer relationship is dynamic and today's environment A different customer relationship has that the that the relationship with the fans has become much more complicated than it was in the past - including a maturity curve ranging from 0 100%. Why choosing Salesforce was a win, after some challenges and time spent working to develop their own CRM. In a small team environment, staffing with people that understand a lot of the discipline, like with data warehousing the structure, the design and the integration and how to move the information, is more effective than hiring highly-specialized individuals. Business trusting data. Support from the top down can help gain acceptance and partner with different business verticals. Business is more accepting of data when it supports someone's bias, when you're providing information to somebody that fits what they know. Eddie Money - Take Me Home Tonight A Booty Edit By Mr Turner Eddie Money was born Edward Joseph Mahoney on March 21, 1949, in Brooklyn, New York. Although he dreamed of being a musician, after high school, Eddie decided to follow in his father’s footsteps and become a police officer. In 1968, after serving as a New York City Police Officer for two years, Money put his law enforcement career on hold to pursue music. He moved to Berkeley, California and began performing at local clubs. Then, in 1976, after changing his surname from Mahoney to Money, Eddie’s fate changed when he was introduced to legendary promoter Bill Graham while performing at one of Graham’s events. The two quickly became close, with Graham serving as both a mentor and manager to Money. Said Graham of Money, “Eddie Money has it all…not only can he sing, write and play, but he is a natural performer.” After signing a recording contract with Columbia Records, Money burst onto the scene with his eponymous debut album in 1977. Fans immediately fell in love with Money’s sound, and the album, which went double platinum, featured hits like “Baby Hold On” and “Two Tickets to Paradise.” Money followed the success of his debut album with a stream of Top 40 hits, as well as some of the era’s most creative videos for songs like “Think I’m in Love” and “Shakin.” In 1986, Money released Can’t Hold Back, which featured the classic, Grammy-Nominated duet with Ronnie Spector, “Take Me Home Tonight.” The song reached number 4 on the Billboard Hot 100. The album went platinum and also featured the hit “I Wanna Go Back.” These days, Money continues to delight new and old fans alike at venues throughout the country. Having opened the summer concert season at the famous DTE Energy Music Theatre in Detroit for nearly 20 years, Money draws fans from all over who are eager to see the legendary musician. Ask any concert attendee and they’ll tell you he retains his signature style and performs with the same passion today as he did more than 30 years ago. In addition to maintaining a busy touring schedule, Money has featured on hit television shows like “The King of Queens,” where he performed for his good friend Kevin James, and “The Drew Carey Show,” where he played Mimi’s ex-husband. In recent years, Eddie has been joined on tour by his daughter, Jesse Money. Jesse, who was on MTV’s “Rock The Cradle,” is a talented and charismatic vocalist who has chosen to follow in her father’s footsteps. While on tour with Eddie, Jesse sings back-up vocals and adds an exciting twist to the duet “Take Me Home Tonight.” Eddie and his wife Laurie also have four sons – Zachary, Joseph, Desmond, and Julian. As the years have passed, Money’s blue-collar brand of Rock n Roll has managed to transcend generations and continues to move audiences today. Along with having sold more than 28 million records, Money’s songs have appeared in dozens of movies and television shows, and have recently been included in hit video games like “Grand Theft Auto” and “Guitar Hero.”
