In which The Curmudgeons celebrate the music and indelible legacy of one of the 21st Century's smartest, most vital rock bands. When The Black Keys first hit in 2002, comparisons with The White Stripes were inevitable. After all, they were a duo that blasted forth with just a guitar and drums. But that's where the fair comparisons ended. The Black Keys offered up lean, mean, reverent blues rock with dashes of soul and psychedelia. After self-recording their first four albums--and mostly doing so in basements--the band graduated to the majors with the help of storied hip-hop producer Danger Mouse, instantly growing as an incredibly sensual musical force. We explore the band's entire catalog, including their brand-new record, Ohio Players. About Paula Swope Before Paula became an author, she raised $60M for impoverished populations by securing grant funds. When Paula was fenced in and punching a time clock, she said, “If I can make a living helping people, I'll have it made.” That's precisely what she did as a grant writer and what she's doing today as an author. Her life purpose is to help people transform their lives as she has, which inspired her to write Thought S.N.O.B.: The Modern Spiritual Playbook for a Better Life. Paula's relatable style has earned her a massive 260,000 social media followers across all platforms, with more than 6,500,000 video views. At 25, broke and miserable, she enrolled in college as a non-traditional student. Six years later, she obtained a bachelor's degree in political science and a master's degree in public administration. In May 2021, after working in fundraising for over a decade, Paula resigned to focus on her lifelong dream of being an author. Paula has studied spirituality for almost 20 years. Her studies include workshops with self-help giants like Wayne Dyer, Louise Hay, Deepak Chopra, and Abraham Hicks. Studying under the best, Paula figures she has accumulated 150,000 hours of experience in this field, making her an expert. She is trained in Transcendental Meditation, Primordial Sound Meditation, and Tapping. To expand her toolbox of offerings, she studies under Deepak Chopra himself. She has earned certifications in Meditation and Ayurveda Health and is working on the most prestigious credentialing offered by the Chopra Center, the Total Well-Being Coaching certification. Even though manifestation is something we do naturally, Paula believes some people must be taught. Her dedication to teaching vulnerable populations how to manifest the lives they deserve is her gift to the world. Coined by her followers as the “most relatable self-help influencer out there,” Paula's social media analytics show that she helps approximately 30,000 people daily through her social media posts and online workshops. Her posts and live events are attended by tens of thousands of viewers, drawn to her relatable style and easy-to-follow strategies. In Thought S.N.O.B., she picks up where her social media has left off, giving readers the tools to move from havoc to happiness. When she's not providing advice or running workshops on social media, Paula enjoys listening to music, and her taste is as diverse as her lifestyle. Don't be surprised to see her in the PIT for Machine Gun Kelly one weekend and then at Elvis Presley's Graceland the next. Paula thinks she's been to Graceland twelve times but admits she stopped counting long ago. She is a world traveler with an eye and an appetite for luxury, but Paula craves silence and solitude more than anything else. Even though she seizes every opportunity to experience new things and adventures, her favorite place is home with her husband and two dogs. One of the four types of deceptions in a romantic comedy is the Magic Potion Deception. Magic potion deceptions in romantic comedies like "Splash," "Mannequin," and "Penelope" offer love and acceptance through the lens of magical realism. Be it a mermaid, a mannequin or a cursed woman, each film cleverly uses the magic potion deception to challenge characters to look beyond the surface, leading to comedic escapades and touching revelations that celebrate the transformative power of love and the importance of embracing one's true essence.

Many parents hesitate to jump to a medication treatment for their child's ADHD and ask about alternatives to medication. On this podcast, we have talked about different medication options but also behavioral therapies, mindfulness, and classroom accommodations, but today we're talking about an empirically supported non-medication treatment for ADHD and the results look very promising. Today's guest is Dr. Sandra Loo who researches Trigeminal Nerve Stimulation and its impact on ADHD symptoms in children ages 7-12 at UCLA. In today's episode, she describes what Trigeminal Nerve Stimulation (TNS) is and how it works to generate brain activity. She also shares the benefits of the treatment and provides updates on how the study is going. It is a very exciting advance in non-medication treatment alternatives for children and you can reach out to Dr. Loo through the links below to participate in the study as well. Show Notes: [2:44] - The work Dr. Loo is doing with this new treatment is exciting and hopeful. [4:06] - Trigeminal Nerve Stimulation is the first FDA cleared treatment of ADHD of kids ages 7-12 years old. It's a mild stimulation that generates brain activity. Dr. Loo describes the process. [5:15] - After about 4 weeks of nightly stimulation, Dr. Loo has seen improvement in ADHD symptoms. [7:18] - Children on the older side of the 7-12 age range tend to feel comfortable putting the device on themselves. Dr. Loo explains what it might feel like for a child to wear. [9:16] - This isn't medication and results are slower than medication treatment. [10:22] - Improvements show the greatest results in inattention. [11:35] - Dr. Loo is also working on predictors that will help determine what treatment would be best for individual children. [13:08] - One observation from parents is that ADHD symptoms are better and that their child is less emotionally dysregulated. [15:45] - After 4 weeks in the study, they found that stopping the treatment did see an increase in the symptoms again. [17:37] - There are other goals for this treatment that are still being researched. [18:15] - There have not been any adverse side effects of this treatment and everyone responds differently. [20:47] - What are the comparisons to more common medication treatment results? [23:33] - All presentations of ADHD are welcome to participate in this study. [25:23] - Dr. Loo shares how to get more information and who to contact to participate, all of which are linked below. [30:26] - This is a multi-site study, also available in Washington. About Our Guest: Sandra Loo, Ph.D. is Professor of Psychiatry and Director of Pediatric Neuropsychology within the Department of Psychiatry, UCLA David Geffen School of Medicine. Dr. Loo is a licensed clinical psychologist and translational researcher whose work over the past 25 years has encompassed genetic, electrophysiology (EEG) and neurocognitive biomarkers within ADHD and other neurodevelopmental disorders. Currently, her research is focused on the development of empirically supported, non-medication treatments for ADHD. She has published over 150 peer reviewed journal articles and book chapters on these and related subjects. Dr. Loo's teaching and clinical activities are focused on comprehensive neuropsychological assessment of youth with pediatric (traumatic brain injury, epilepsy, brain tumors) and psychiatric (ADHD, Specific Learning Disorders, mood and anxiety) disorders. She oversees research and clinical training activities for trainees interested in specializing in ADHD and related neurodevelopmental disorders. Produced by Joseph Cottrell, Ken Fuller, Wayne Hall and Jeffrey Crecelius In a change to the advertised episode, Mark and I thought it was essential to give our thoughts on the new Yes single Cut From The Stars so most of this episode is devoted to the best new Yes music for many years. How does this new Yes music compare to The Quest? Does it sound progressive? Does it increase the anticipation for the new album? https://youtu.be/5WSqjH6mFhk YES announce new studio album ‘Mirror To The Sky' for release 19th May 2023; launch first single ‘Cut From The Stars' YES, who are Steve Howe, Geoff Downes, Jon Davison, Billy Sherwood & Jay Schellen, are pleased to announce their new studio album Mirror To The Sky on InsideOutMusic/Sony Music on the 19th May 2023. “This is a very important album for the band,” says Steve Howe, Yes' longest serving member, master guitarist, and producer of Mirror To The Sky. “We kept the continuity in the approach we established on The Quest, but we haven't repeated ourselves. That was the main thing. As Yes did in the seventies from one album to another, we're growing and moving forward. In later years, Yes often got going but then didn't do the next thing. This album is demonstrative of us growing, and building again.” For Yes, that “next thing” is a collection of high energy, intricate, lush and layered new studio songs for an album which adds to the band's much heralded legacy, while charting a path to exciting future times ahead. Today also sees the launch of the first track taken from the album. Magic Potion 04:08 As they were wrapping up The Quest, Yes found themselves with song sketches, structures, and ideas that were demanding attention. Yes received unconditional support from InsideOut boss Thomas Waber, who encouraged them to keep going in the studio, months before The Quest would even go on sale. It was like throwing gasoline on their creative fire. “When we delivered everything, and they were just getting the vinyl and everything into production for manufacturing, we were still very much in that creative zone,” explains Steve Howe. “That belief that Thomas had in us really meant a lot,” he says. “We truly get along as people,” says Jon Davison. “I feel like everyone's focused inward to the greater circle, concentric to the core of highest standards that define Yes. It's a wonderful thing to witness and of which to play a part. I believe this reflects vibrantly in the music and the creative input that each one is willing to apply, not for the benefit of the individual, but for the greater whole that is Yes.” “There was a lot of material floating around because the band hadn't done anything in the studio for so long. Ideas were just copious,” says bassist Billy Sherwood. “The pace of it was fast. As soon as we were finished with The Quest, and the mix had come out, we took a couple of little breaks there to catch our breath. But there was still music flowing around in the loop. It was just constantly being looked at and worked on. As we were all home and in that mode,
If your child has been diagnosed with ADHD, you might be considering your treatment options. The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends that for children between the ages of 4 and 6, the first line of treatment should include parent training in behavior management and behavioral classroom interventions. Medication should be used if those interventions do not result in significant improvement or if the child continues to have serious problems. For children and adolescents between the ages of 6 and 18, recommended treatment is FDA approved medications along with parent training in behavior management and classroom interventions. Medication works alongside behavior management. We get questions frequently about medication and they need to be answered by a pediatric expert. That's why I have asked Dr. Syed Naqvi to join the podcast for this conversation on medication as a treatment for ADHD. In this episode, you'll learn how medication can benefit a child with ADHD, but also the steps to take before it is ever considered. Show Notes: [2:46] - Over the years, Dr. Wilson has received numerous questions about medication. [3:33] - Medication consultations are necessary to determine if it's appropriate. [4:26] - Not every case of ADHD needs medication as treatment. [5:50] - For medication to be used, ADHD must interfere with daily life. [7:01] - Be mindful that ADHD might not be the sole factor in disruptive behavior. [8:55] - Dr. Naqvi is adamant about using standard scales. [10:10] - Sometimes, Dr. Naqvi can be doing an ADHD assessment and notice other learning disabilities. [11:33] - Interventions will vary depending on the age of the child and there are a lot of factors that impact them. [13:14] - Interventions need to be revisited every 6-12 months. [15:29] - The root cause is the most important piece to find and that's challenging in a child as they are growing and changing. [17:23] - All medications have side effects and they need to be considered. If the risks outweigh the benefits, that is not the route to take. [18:49] - The benefits of medication will be different per child. [20:50] - Setting boundaries and rules to help manage behavior is necessary in addition to medication. [23:07] - Dr. Naqvi and Dr. Wilson discuss work by Russell Barkley. [24:01] - Interventions need to take place before medication is introduced. [25:19] - Some parents are disappointed when medication isn't immediately prescribed, but Dr. Naqvi shares that it is not a magic potion. [27:05] - Dr. Naqvi shares the differences between some common medications prescribed for ADHD. [30:16] - FDA guidelines must be considered. [31:36] - Dr. Naqvi educates parents on other types of supplements that could benefit children with ADHD before resorting to medication. [33:12] - Let children have their joy but be aware of things like treats and how they impact their behavior. [35:26] - Be aware of myths that surround ADHD and ADHD medication. [36:43] - Genetics also plays a role in side effects. [37:53] - ADHD is a genetic disorder, which may impact the parent in remembering to give the child medication appropriately. [40:39] - If you have questions for Dr. Naqvi, email is the best way to reach him. About Our Guest: Syed Naqvi MD is Board certified and recertified, in both adult and child & Adolescent psychiatry. If all you do is eat together, you'll feed your bodies but probably not much more benefit than that. But if you interact with each other you will fuel your relationships and strengthen your family which brings us to our marriage tip, are you feeding or fueling your marriage.

Facebook Ads aren't a Magic Potion for Your Business, They Are Simply a Marketing Channel About Jennifer Spivak Jennifer Spivak is on a mission to help amplify women's voices in the world through the powerful medium of Facebook Ads. She is known as the conversion queen by Forbes and has generated over $16 million for hundreds of notable clients worldwide. Jennifer is also on a mission to work less and make more. She a rebel of the hustle culture. The Second Phase So many people feel stuck and believe they have to stay because they need the money or the benefits and so they live in a happy job. When you want to move into something new, ask yourself the question, do you want to stay stuck, or follow your values, visions, and passions. Starting a side gig is an option to make money on the side while building your business. When deciding whether or not to leave her first company, Jennifer was asked by a friend, “how many days in the last month have you thought about leaving this job?” Her answer was 30 and that was her sign to make the change. Facebook Ads vs. Instagram Ads Setting up the ads is exactly the same, but you choose where the ad will be presented, Facebook or Instagram. It is best not to look at them differently, and let the algorithm automatically adjust to the best place based on the demographics, etc. that you are looking to target. Select Facebook and Instagram when setting up the ad and then the algorithm, which knows more than we do, adjust based on where the best results are. When Should I Run Facebook Ads Jennifer shared that it is best to wait until your offer, your messaging and your customer decision journey have been validated. People think Facebook ads will solve all of the problems in their business and help them make more money. But that isn't true. Facebook Ads are simply a marketing channel. They are a way to get people into the “thing”, program, funnel, etc. Facebook ads will get more eyes on the “thing”. Most people are not ready for ads until they are making at least low six figures. If you are making less than $100K, your offer isn't statistically significantly validated so that you can say what your conversion rate will be from the ads. This is definitely a case-by-case basis. It's less about the ROI and more about the length of time it is going to take to see the benefit of the ads. When you are coming in with a validated message, offer, and funnel, the variable, the piece that is being tested is just the ads. This is when the ads manager should be able to get you results in a few months. If you don't have a validated variable, it will take more time to test different variables and get the ads correct to reach your audience. Jennifer believes it's best to be scrappy to get to the first $100K and wait to do ads until there is validation. What is the Investment for Facebook Ads? If you want to run a few ads a day, you can spend as little or as much as you want. The question is, do you have the skills and knowledge to make the ads work for you. When talking about hiring someone, you can find a freelancer for about $1500 a month to deliver the service, manage and set up the ads for you. Agencies who manage and set up ads maybe $5000 to $10000 per month. There is a wide range depending on if you are working with a freelancer or agency. You can spend $500 per month just on the ad piece, without even considering the management and setup. Know Your Goals for Running Ads Think about your goals for doing ads and work backward to get a ballpark on what you might have to spend on ads for them to work for you. Get Baseline Data Through Beta Testing Testing will give you data to tell you every time you spend X you get a sale, every time you spend X you book a call, and so on. Then you have real data specific to their business and this data will help you determine how much you have to spend for your specific business. There is definitely value in hiring someone to do the Facebook Ads for you. Bringing in a Cold Audience vs. a Warm Organic Audience Ads will bring in a cold audience where engagement and relationship building gives you a warmer audience. In general, a warmer audience will convert higher and need fewer touchpoints because they already know you. Messaging has to be tweaked for a cold audience vs. a warm audience. Boost This Post Is it effective to boost a post? You will reach a larger audience. It isn't a question of whether or not boosting a post works, but more so understanding what different types of ads do and are your expectations in alignment with that. Every type of ad that you run, whether it's a boosted post or going through ads manager, there is still an important fact that you need to know what you are using the ad for. Using ads manager is going to drive action and help you convert to sales. Be sure to think out your customer's journey and what you want to happen once the person sees the ad, through a boosted post or through the ads manager. What is a Facebook Pixel? Absolutely, without a doubt, you need a Facebook Pixel on your website. The pixel will collect data on the people who are visiting your website so that when you do ads, you can target the right audience. The Facebook Pixel has two purposes. Retargeting – anyone who visits your website may need multiple touchpoints. The Pixel allows you to see who visited so that you can then retarget them with additional information or more touchpoints. Track Actions – sending people to a page to sign up for free training. After they sign up, they end up on the thank you page. There is a special part of the pixel that reads that sign up and then Facebook knows what page or ad generated the sale. This helps set up ads for the lowest cost possible with the best results. Lead Magnets For certain types of businesses lead magnets may be creating a certain type of barrier. When selling a high ticket and done for your service, you are working with a different audience. This audience does not want to do anything for themselves, so will a lead magnet actually help them? They are just looking for the right person with the right messaging to show up at the right time. Jennifer believes that just showing up and telling people what she does, is how she makes 7 figures. Her ads are getting her a 23% conversion rate. When creating a lead magnet, consider whether your clients are done for you clients or clients who want knowledge to try to do something for themselves. It is on a case-by-case basis. Effective Email Sequence Jennifer uses a funnel of emails. She has a nurture campaign that kicks in after the person books a call. Her email sequence starts when people book a call up until the time the call actually occurs. This works, because by the time Jennifer gets on a call with the person, they are warmed up to her and ready to buy. Think about differentiating yourself through your email sequence. What it comes down to it, it is creating true authentic connection that makes the difference and eliminates the need to do proposals. Clients are already to buy so no need to send a proposal.
