Grace Comfort, Class of 2021, has an impressive list of accomplishments displayed on her #2021EHSGradSpotlight poster that has been promoted through various East Penn School District social media accounts over the last few months. She serves as the president of Peers Assisting Learning Support (PALS), Student Government Association Secretary and EPSD School Board Representative, and National Honor Society member among many other things. But most importantly, Grace is a strong self-advocate. During a Genius Hour project in middle school, Grace investigated her own learning challenges and eventually discovered she had dyslexia. While transitioning to high school, Grace spent her 9th grade year figuring out how she could best learn and perform at a high academic level. While it wasn't always easy, Grace's story shows that with courage, compassion, connection and a desire to never stop questioning that great things are possible. She plans on majoring in psychology at Lafayette College.

How to Unpack PBL an Inquiry. If there's one thing that teaching during a pandemic has emphasized it's the need for inquiry and better student involvement. So many teachers have reported lack of engagement in remote learning. I think project-based learning is the future of school and a method of instruction that every educator should explore and apply. No matter where you are on the spectrum with project-based learning, you will appreciate and benefit from hearing from Ross and Erin.  Ross Cooper is currently an administrator in the Chappaqua Central School District. Previously, he was an Elementary School Principal, K-12 curriculum supervisor, Elementary Assistant Principal, and fourth grade teacher. He is an Apple Distinguished Educator and a Google Certified Innovator. In Episode 52 of The Staffroom Podcast, Chey and Pav talk an article that they read on Flipboard called, "New Study SHows Children Learn Better While Studying Outside," by Matluba Khan. The article discusses the importance of students spending more time outdoors while engaging in their learning, whether it's face to face or online. Chey and Pav talked about how they have, in the past, taken advantage of the school's outdoor space, and also how they hope to be able to do so when they are back with their students in a few days. Pav talks about what she learned from having Kindergarten and Primary students a few years ago, and how much they learn while outside. Chey discusses the many ways he takes advantage of the outdoors for his physical education program, and how he is looking forward to being able to do this more when school starts, and in other subject areas. The two discuss the idea of Land Based Learning, which is an environmental approach to learning that recognizes the relationship of Indigenous peoples to the land. They talk about the importance of recognizing that many cultures around the world do not have the traditional and colonial way of learning that we have in our schooling, and therefore, many students inherently don't do well in our system because of this unnatural way of learning. Some of the topics we asked about this week included understanding social distancing, how much they have been outside since the closure, how they are staying in contact with friends and family, how the shutdown of local business has impacted their lives, and if they live with or know anyone in the medical field. As we approach the end of our second week of our Coronavirus shutdown in the East Penn School District, we check in with 9th graders to see how they are feeling about our new reality. Some of the topics we asked about this week included understanding social distancing, how much they have been outside since the closure, how they are staying in contact with friends and family, how the shutdown of local business has impacted their lives, and if they live with or know anyone in the medical field. She received her teaching certificate from Moravian College and earned Masters Degrees in Classroom Technology, Instructional Technology and Instructional Media from Wilkes University. Paula is a Keystone Technology Innovator Star 2016. She is currently working on becoming a Google Certified Educator. Paula is the second-grade level district leader at East Penn and serves on several committees within the district to support grading and curriculum initiatives. She also leads and teaches several PD courses in the district. Recently, Paula presented a session about taking her classroom global at the Pennsylvania Educational Technology Expo & Conference in Hershey, PA. Come hear how Heather Moser, the lone tech integration specialist for her district uses a variety of technology tools to build and enhance relationships. As the only tech coach supporting 8,000 students, 529 teachers, and spanning 10 buildings necessity has propelled her to support teachers and their integration efforts K-12 in creative ways. With building and enhancing relationships as her foundation see how she stitches together various web based tools to create a comfortable yet innovative culture for teachers to transform their classrooms. Tools discussed include G Suite Apps: Sites, Classroom, Docs, Slides, Forms, Sheets, Calendar, YouTube, and Meet, also, Flipgrid, Remind, Seesaw, Book-me, Screencast-o-matic, and Twitter. The other big loves in her life are her two sons, Jackson age 11 and Luke age 8, and her husband Mark. She spends a lot of time supporting these three guys in their endeavors which include basketball, baseball, 4H, and farming. They have the great pleasure of living on their family farm with a herd of registered Holsteins which her husband and father-in-law milk twice a day. Classroom 2.0 LIVE webinar, "A New Spin on PD-Alternatives to Traditional PD" with special guest presenter, Dennine Leschinsky. February 3, 2018. Professional development is an important part of our lives as educators, but often it falls short of meeting our needs. Too often we find ourselves in "sit and git" sessions where we have to listen to information that seems irrelevant with no way to personalize the experience to make it relevant. Fortunately, there are many educators who are working to change that type of PD experience, and our special guest for this week's webinar, Dennine Leschinsky, has some very exciting ideas to share with us for alternatives to traditional PD. Join us to hear Dennine's "New Spin on PD." Webinar Description: If you build it, they will come. PD in our district has evolved to include new designs including the implementation of a learning lounge, empower hour and breakFAST. Each offers a unique spin on PD which begins with district and building initiatives and is driven by teacher choice. Each has similar components of a learning lounge. Clearly defined, a learning lounge is a place where educators can come together to learn and collaborate about instructional content and practices. It is a relaxed, interactive environment, much like that of a craft fair or flea market where shoppers browse and converse with vendors about their wares. Our goal is to allow our teachers to have a comfort level with some of the instructional practices prior implementation. Empower hour is a structure much like an EdCamp where teachers are empowered to share strategies or technology tools with other teachers. This has replaced our faculty meetings. BreakFAST is a type of PD we used to strengthen our teacher’s use of a new formative assessment screening tool we implemented this year. This session is perfect for anyone who plans professional development or faculty meetings. Dennine Leschinsky is in her 22nd year in education. As a certified Reading Specialist and veteran teacher, Dennine owns and operates an Early Intervention agency called, Connective Interventions Services where she supervises and designs professional development for 30 staff members. In addition, Dennine’s experience as an educator includes teaching preschool, first, second, and third grades, as well as serving as a Literacy and Technology Coach for grades 6-8. Currently, Dennine is the Instructional Specialist at Wescosville Elementary School in the East Penn School District. In this role, she provides instructional coaching and also serves as a school-based MTSS coordinator. Dennine works collaboratively with district level administration to plan systemic professional development experiences. Additionally, she has presented at several local and state conferences spanning her career. For many teachers, PBL is a very different way of facilitating learning, where kids are identifying a real-world problem and developing its solution. It’s an incredibly powerful, effective, and cross-curricular way for kids to learn. But it’s not always simple to plan, and manage, and assess, so we’re going to talk about some practical teaching strategies. We’re also going to look at how to address some of the pitfalls that students face. PBL is incredibly rigorous, or should be, and we all know that kids aren’t always excited about rigor and working hard--they can’t just pass a test at the end of the unit and be done. With PBL, kids show what they learn as they journey through the unit, interact with its lessons, collaborate with each other, and assess themselves and each other. It’s pretty complex stuff. It’s a tough juxtaposition with the “fill in the bubble” standardized testing mentality that most are expected to juggle simultaneously. I have two guests on the show today to help us explore these issues--they are the co-authors of the new book Hacking Project Based Learning: 10 Easy Steps to PBL and Inquiry in the Classroom. You’ll hear from Erin Murphy, who is an assistant principal and certified literacy specialist in the East Penn School District in Pennsylvania, and Ross Cooper, who is the Supervisor of Instructional Practice K-12 in the Salisbury Township School District in Allentown, Pennsylvania. Erin and Ross are passionate about inquiry-based learning and have supported countless teachers in implementing it, through not only their school-based work but also through the PD and workshops they conduct. I’m really excited to have them here to help us move past the jargon and buzzwords, and talk about the realities on doing PBL with kids.
