My guest this week is Samantha Purdy who has built up a career in Learning & Development and then the broader, over-arching Organisational Development.Like many, Samantha felt a bit lost after College and wasn't sure about which direction to take. Despite considering to do a Social Care degree, she also looked at other options and applied for some Apprenticeships too. One was for a Business Administrator in local government and just happened to be in their Organisational Development team. As Samantha's skills and capability developed she was asked by her Manager if she wanted to start delivering some training. So as a 19 year old, she wrote and delivered her first training programme. Pretty scary stuff for someone so young and Samantha admits to struggling with imposter syndrome even now.As her career progressed it took her out of public service and into the private sector.... and back again. Along the way she has picked up line management responsibility and Samantha talks about how it was easy to start in a new role as a line manager than transitioning into that type of position from within a team. She also talks about  where in one Management role she oversaw a large team and her realisation that she really missed being 'hands-on' so left for something that was a good blend between leading a team but still being involved in daily activities herself.This is a fantastic conversation for anyone who has wondered about the world of L&D and OD, and considered if this would be a good career as an alternative to HR. According to spokeswoman Kathryn Goodman, there were 127 vaccinations in that range at the Community Vaccination Center in Seminole Square and Pediatric Associates vaccinated 565 children. The Blue Ridge Health District and the University of Virginia Health System begin administering shots today.  “I think this is a really big step forward and the COVID vaccine is one of the most well-studied vaccines at this point in history,” said Dr. Debbie-Ann Shirley, an expert on pediatric infectious diseases at the UVA Health System. “There have been hundreds of millions of doses already given. There have been clinical trials done in adults, young adults, adolescents, and now children in the 5 to 11 age group.”Federal officials approved the Pfizer vaccine for children last week, which uses a smaller dose than the one given to people 12 and above. Dr. Shirley said that lower dose was suggested through the testing process. Last week, she penned an article on UVA Today outlining the work that has gone into producing the shots. “Using that low dose vaccine, they still make really high levels of antibody that were comparable to the same antibody levels that we’ve seen in adolescents and older adults who received higher doses,” Dr. Shirley said. Dr. Shirley said Moderna has submitted their data to the Food and Drug Administration for approval, and Pfizer will soon submit data for a vaccine for even younger children. This morning the Virginia Department of Health reports another 913 new cases and the seven-day average of new cases at 1,276 a day. The percent positivity has increased slightly to 5.6 percent, up from 5.4 percent on Thursday. The Blue Ridge Health District reports another 42 cases today and there have been five more reported fatalities since Thursday.The man who started Charlottesville’s first commercial television station in 1973 has died. Harold Wright passed away on Saturday at his home at Lake Monticello. WVIR launched on March 11, 1973 using $500,000 of capital as well as second-hand equipment. That’s according to a story published this morning on NBC29.com. Wright retired from the station in January 2020, not long after it was purchased by Gray Communications in March 2019. Louisa County Supervisor Fitzgerald Barnes has won re-election to a seventh term representing the Patrick Henry District. A canvas and recount on Friday that included remaining provisional and absentee ballots extended Barnes’ election-night lead of one vote to four votes over challenger William D. Woody Jr. According to coverage on Twitter by Tammy Purcel of Engage Louisa, Woody would have had ten days to ask for a recount but he conceded the race. Charlottesville’s Fifeville Neighborhood Association and the city government are seeking a consultant to help with a series of listening sessions to help implement the Cherry Avenue Small Area Plan. That document was produced by consulting staff at the Thomas Jefferson Planning District and approved as an addendum to the city’s current Comprehensive Plan on March 1. On that same night Council adopted an affordable housing plan as the first milestone in the Cville Plans Together initiative. The neighborhood association seeks a “third-party facilitator to help co-design and lead up to three Anti-Displacement, Land Acquisition, and Development Working Sessions.” The goal is to move forward with  implementation of the plan.  (read the request for proposals)The firm Rhodeside & Harwell will not pursue this request for proposals, according to Cville Plans Together project manager Jennifer Koch. Her team is familiar with the Cherry Avenue Plan.“We reviewed this plan, as we reviewed other completed Small Area Plans, and looked to support recommendations related to fostering a mix of uses and more housing options/density at levels that respect the current scale of the neighborhood,” Koch wrote in an email this morning. “The affordability framework and anti-displacement mechanisms built into the plan (including, but not limited to, the Sensitive Community Areas) also align with goals in the Cherry Avenue SAP.”Since adoption of the plan in March, several properties have exchanged hands. In April, Woodard Properties purchased the Cherry Avenue Shopping Center as well as vacant land immediately behind. In July, the company bought a vacant lot in the 800 block of the busy roadway. Also in July an LLC called Project New Life bought undeveloped land on Cherry Avenue at the intersection of 7 1/2th Street. The Future Land Use Map in the draft Comprehensive Plan calls for Cherry Avenue west of Roosevelt Brown Avenue to be in the new Medium Intensity Residential, which calls for increased housing opportunities “along neighborhood corridors, near community amenities.” The areas around Nalle Street and King Street north of Cherry Avenue east of Roosevelt Brown are designated as “low-intensity residential (sensitive community areas)” to “allow for additional housing choice, and tools to mitigate displacement, within existing residential neighborhoods that have high proportions of populations that may be sensitive to displacement.”But will that stop those with wealth from purchasing single-family homes that would then be protected from additional density? In April, a house in the 700 block of Nalle Street sold for $700,000, or 85.83 percent over the 2021 assessment. For a list of the others, visit wtju.net to learn more and sign up! At the same time ballots were being counted in Louisa County on Friday afternoon, City Council introduced Marc Woolley as the next interim city manager. Woolley recently resigned as Business Administrator in Harrisburg, the capital of Pennsylvania. The city has U.S. Census 2020 population of 50,099. Deputy City Manager Ashley Marshall and Sam Sanders will remain in place. “Together with the assistance of staff, Sam, Ashley, and Council, I will be focusing on some key issues currently before Charlottesville,” Woolley said. “Mainly the budget and the completion of the Comprehensive Plan.” Woolley will begin work on December 1. The process to find a permanent city manager will resume once again in April. Woolley is a native of Wilmington, Delaware who went to law school at Boston College. He’s worked as general counsel for the Philadelphia Housing Authority, two positions at the Delaware River Port Authority, three positions at the Hershey Trust Company, and the position in Harrisburg. (read his resume)“I’ve been with the City of Harrisburg for the past four years as the Business Administrator,” Woolley said.Harrisburg has a form of municipal government where the executive and legislative branches are separate, so a “strong mayor” oversees department heads. The business administrator position is equivalent to a city manager. “All administration functions flowed through me except for the city solicitor,” Woolley said. According to an article on Pennsylvania Live, Woolley’s resignation had been expected to begin on November 12, but Mayor Eric Papenfuse made that effective November 1 after learning of the Woolley’s decision to leave Harrisburg. Papenfuse was defeated the next day in his bid for a third term, though he ran as a write-in. Anticipating questions from the press about Woolley’s careee, Councilor Lloyd Snook led a friendly cross-examination of his career history after resigning from the Philadelphia Housing Authority. Snook:“Looking at the next ten years or so of your career it seems like you were often put in a position of having to kind of clean up a mess. Is that an accurate assessment?”Woolley:“I think to first assess what the issues were and then accordingly if there were things that needed to be done to implement those policies in order to rectify anything.” Harrisburg has been considered by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania as a distressed municipality since 2010. That requires creation of a Financial Recovery Plan which is called the Harrisburg Strong Plan. The latest financial report for the capital city is from 2019.  Snook:“When you got to Harrisburg there were shall we say some financial difficulties that you were having to unravel.”Woolley:“Some financial difficulties. We are in Act 47 which is for distressed municipalities in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. Years before I arrived in Harrisburg there were a number of bond deals that were done and saddled the residents with a lot of debt and turns out they just couldn’t pay it. The city couldn’t pay it back. The state sent in a receiver to develop what they call the Strong Plan. They sold off a lot of assets, almost $400 million worth of assets, applied those to the debt and set up payments for other general obligation debts. When I arrived in Harrisburg, we were rounding the corner. This year and actually starting last year, was able to entertain actually getting back our credit rating. We didn’t have a credit rating. Looking to refinance debt and put out for capital projects. It’s a 180 degree turn from where they were and I think Harrisburg is going to better for it and I think they’re going to get a credit rating. Not as good as Charlottesville, but they’re going to try.”The city has held a AAA bond rating from Standards and Poor’s since 1964 and a AAA bond rating from Moody’s since 1973. For the past several years, the city has been steadily increasing debt-financing for capital projects, including several million a year for affordable housing projects and $75 million for the renovation of Buford Middle School. The next budget may include a property tax increase to help pay the debt service. Woolley will oversee creation of that next document but acknowledged Council will be reopening the pubic process for a permanent manager next spring. (Routine advice wanted for city bonds, October 26, 2021)“This is not necessarily the transition,” Woolley said. “The transition will occur when the new city manager is appointed through the process that you’ve described in April but right now there are certain acute issues that need to be taken care of, mainly the budget and the Comprehensive Plan.” Woolley said his role is to lay the foundation for that person. While Charlottesville’s government is not considered distressed, the separate Charlottesville Redevelopment and Housing Authority is considered a troubled agency by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development. Watch the whole press briefing which included comments and questions from members of the community. Episode 1010: Leading Through COVID-19 – Financial Planning Scott Crawford, Business Administrator and CFO of the Family Church Network, joins the conversation. As churches are seeing a decline in offerings, it’s important to seriously reconsider budgets and financial strategies. In this episode, we look at our financial plan amidst the coronavirus crisis. We discuss looking at income versus expenditures and what a phased financial plan looks like and how it is communicated to our staff and volunteers. None of us knows how long this crisis will persist. It is advisable to plan for the worst while hoping for the best. In light of this, we outlined a plan preparing us for an extended period of economic uncertainty. We talk about how each phase is dependent on triggers, determined by factual information. We also talk about identifying and holding on to a minimum operating reserve (if possible) and the human resources that should be considered in this process. Key Points From This Episode: The need to plan for a different financial reality now and after the crisis is over. Considering both the short and long-term components of financial sustainability. The importance of being flexible, adaptable, and agile. Consider cost cutting methods, including bringing services that were outsourced back in-house. How to determine when to activate the next phase of your financial plan. How we are rolling out the plan and communicating it with the people involved. Leveraging resources offered at this time, including applying for stimulus packages. The worst thing that churches can do right now is knee-jerk and react. How can you create a Marketing Strategy without this….. truth is you can’t, so lets discuss this later. First, we’re going to have a chat with Teresa Gandy the Customer Survey and Customer Experience Expert at Clarity CX. The first of two episodes where we take a look at CX in more detail. Starting out as a Business Administrator allowed Teresa to really focus on what matters - viewing and solving other people’s issues. Fast-forward a few years and now Teresa helps to create great customer experiences and improve businesses workflows, especially for smaller businesses, bringing big business practices into the smaller business world and helping them thrive.   Takeaways - A Customers Experience (CX) is every single touch-point and needs to be considered even before a customer is a customer! With 70% of purchases based around the feelings we have, this experience needs to be tip top - Culture, process and operational changes are all as important as each other when it comes to CX and they should never be set in stone – they are as living and breathing as your customers. Moving and changing a CX needs to be done along with the changes within the market and consumers. - To create an excellent survey you need simplicity and speed. But post-survey, remember to share the results unless the whole survey become pretty redundant.   Top Tip – STP (Segmentation, Targeting and Positioning) Segmentation, Targeting and Positioning, or STP for short is a concept that can help you focus your marketing strategy towards the right target market in three simple steps…… with a little work of course. Segmentation Segment your market into sections of similarity. Divisions of people that have the same likes, interests and demographic background in order to understand their place within a certain market. Targeting Which of these segments will you target? And why? You will need legitimate reasoning behind this why? It could be the largest segment, most profitable, most aligned to your beliefs or even the one that you a closest to! Ideally it will be all of the above, but sometimes we have to make the decision and decide which segment, amongst others is the right one for a limited number of reasons. Positioning Finally, how will you position yourself in order to be viewed as the right solution to your target markets problems. What features and benefits will you use to highlight this fact. This month, I've done episodes covering your Motivated Skills, your personality preferences using the framework of the MBTI, your Core Values, and your Areas of Expertise in making career decisions. Remember, I've talked about the macro- and micro-level of career decisions. On the macro level, you are making a decision about the career path you will follow. On a micro-level, you are using this information to make decisions about which jobs to take. On an even more micro-level, you are using the knowledge to guide projects, programs, committee assignments, and job duties…or to help you boss make these same decisions. Today I want to bring all of these things together. First, a refresher. Motivated Skills: Those skills that you are both very good at and get a great deal of pleasure from doing. The reason they are called Motivated Skills is because the more you do them, the more motivated you will be about your work. The opposite of Motivated Skills is Burnout Skills. Burnout Skills are those skills that you are very good at, but DON'T get any pleasure from doing. In fact, these skills suck the motivation right out of you. The more you have to perform Burnout Skills in your work, the more likely you are to…you guessed it…burn out. A few examples of Motivated Skills are Writing, Presentation Skills, Customer Service, Working with Numerical Data, Research, Mechanical Reasoning, Troubleshooting, Teaching, and Planning. Personality: Using the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI) as the framework, it measures personality preferences on four scales and identifies one of 16 personality types based on your responses. The MBTI identifies your innate preferences…the way you prefer to handle a situation or task if given the option. The preference pairs of the MBTI are: Extraversion vs. Introversion, which is your orientation to the outer world…where you get your energy from. Sensing vs. Intuition, which is your preferred way of taking in information, and they type of information you prefer to work with. Thinking vs. Feeling, which is your preferred decision-making style. Judging vs. Perceiving, which is how you order your world. Core Values: What is most important to you in an employer, a work environment, and the specific work you're doing. Identifying these “non-negotiable” values helps you align your career choices with what is most important to you. And alignment increases your chance for career success, compensation, and satisfaction. Here are a few sample Values: Utilize physical strength and coordination Utilize courage and take risks Utilize creativity and originality Opportunity for advancement Ability to do a job as efficiently as possible Receive recognition for accomplishments Ability to exert power and influence Higher than average financial rewards Areas of Expertise: What are You REALLY Good At? We're talking about capitalizing on your Areas of Expertise. If you're just getting out of college, your Areas of Expertise are probably vague ideas…shadows of what is to come. But if you've been in the work force for a few years, you should have at least 2-3 Areas of Expertise, with more to develop as you progress through your career. I connected the Areas of Expertise to your Motivated Skills, because I see your Areas of Expertise as sub-sets of your Motivated Skills. Let's say, for example, one of your Motivated Skills is Writing, which is defined as “Possessing excellent writing skills. Able to create business or technical documents, correspondence, and other effective written communications.” So you get a job in the Public Relations office of a company, where one of your main duties is to write press releases. Because of this experience, one of your Areas of Expertise becomes “Writing Press Releases.” Let's put all of this information together in a couple of case studies that will hopefully help you get the idea. Case #1 – Danielle Danielle is a 25-year-old college graduate who studied communications in college and has been working in the entertainment industry since graduating. She is looking to make a career change, because she finds her current field to be too competitive and not meaningful enough for her. Danielle's top 5 Motivated Skills are: Writing Public Relations Organization Creative or Imaginative with Ideas Decision-Making Her personality type is ENFJ; here's the description of that personality type: Imaginative HARMONIZERS; at their best when winning people's cooperation with insight into their needs. They value: -Having a wide circle of relationships -Having a positive, enthusiastic view of life -Seeing subtleties in people and interactions -Understanding others' needs and concerns -An active, energizing social life -Seeing possibilities in people -Follow-through on important projects -Working on several projects at once -Caring and imaginative problem solving -Maintaining relationships to make things work -Shaping organizations to better serve members -Caring, compassion, and tactfulness Her Core Values are: -Utilize creativity and imagination -Ability to help/serve others -Close relationships with co-workers -Working on multiple projects simultaneously -Flexibility in work schedule How would you coach Danielle? Here's what we talked about: -She needs a career that is meaningful to her in that she is able to help others, while utilizing her considerable creativity. She prefers freedom in her work hours – as long as she gets the work done, it shouldn't matter when she does it. She also wants to wear multiple hats, so a start-up would be a good fit for her (smaller = more jobs to be done). Danielle decided to pursue careers in non-profit marketing – finding a non-profit she is passionate about, which is fitness, and marketing that non-profit to the appropriate audiences. Case #2 – Brandon Brandon has just graduated from college with a degree in business but doesn't know where he wants to go. He interned with Enterprise Rent-a-Car while in college and liked the variety of work but didn't like the front-line management part of his job or how little structure there was to his daily duties. Brandon's top 5 Motivated Skills are: Selling Negotiating Customer Service Work with Numerical Data Planning Detail Management Brandon's personality preference is ESTJ; here's the description of that personality type: Fact-minded practical ORGANIZERS; at their best when they can take charge and set things in logical order. They value: -Results; doing, acting -Planned, organized work and play -Common-sense practicality; usefulness -Consistency; standard procedures -Deciding quickly and logically -Having things settled and closed; orderliness -Rules, objective standards, fairness -Task-focused behavior -Directness, tough-mindedness -Systematic structure; efficiency -Scheduling and monitoring -Protecting what works Brandon's Core Values are: -Open for Advancement -Ability to Do Job as Efficiently as Possible -Highly Structured Environment -Work that Mentally Challenges You -Performing Clearly Defined Tasks How would you coach Brandon? Here's what we talked about: Brandon liked the sales aspect of his internship with Enterprise Rent-a-Car, and had also had part-time jobs where sales was a component of his job. He likes the idea of being highly compensated for superior performance in sales. What Brandon DOESN'T like about sales is the unpredictability of it…how flexible you have to be. Brandon LOVES structure. So where do we go from here? One of the top careers for ESTJs is Business Administrator, and the administrative aspects of his internship appealed to Brandon. He admitted that, once he was older and more experienced, he wouldn't mind supervising employees…he just didn't feel qualified to do that as an intern. Brandon decided to pursue jobs as a sales compensation analyst, where he could use his sales experience coupled with his love of structure to research ways to attract and retain top-notch sales people. From there, Brandon could see himself moving into other business administration roles. Case #3 – Sadie Sadie has been out of college for about eight years; she majored in psychology. When she began that degree, she planned to get a Ph.D. in psychology, but as she went through her coursework that became less interesting to her. After graduating, Sadie got a job in human resources as a generalist – some hiring, some benefits, all kinds of personnel issues. She liked the variety of the work but didn't love the constraints around how she could help the employees. She stayed in this job for three years. The next job Sadie had was also in human resources, at a larger company where she specialized in recruiting employees. She liked feeling like she was really helping people but found the career fairs and other large recruiting events to be extremely draining. Most recently, Sadie has worked as a Recruiter for a recruiting company. This has been a step back in that she feels overwhelmed by the volume of people contacting her and the volume of contacts she has to make each day. She's ready for a complete change. Sadie's top 5 Motivated Skills are: Writing Counseling Negotiating Performance Improvement Creativity or Imagination with Ideas Sadie's MBTI type is INFP; here's the description of that personality type: Imaginative, independent HELPERS; at their best when their inner ideals are expressed through helping people. They value: -Harmony in the inner life of ideas -Harmonious work settings; working individually -Seeing big-picture possibilities -Creativity; curiosity; exploring -Helping people find their potential -Giving ample time to reflect on decisions -Adaptability and openness -Compassion and caring; attention to feelings -Work that lets them express their idealism -Gentle, respectful interactions -Showing appreciation and being appreciated -Close, loyal friends Sadie's Core Values are -Help/Serve Others -Ability to Teach/Train -Ability to Give Ideas/Input/Suggestions -A Quiet Workspace -Unstructured, Open Environment How would you coach Sadie? Here's what happened: Sadie talked about considering a Master's in Counseling so she could become a Certified Counselor, but decided she was more interested in being a coach. Because I have considerable knowledge in this area, I was able to educate Sadie on the types of coaching out there, the industry as a whole, and how she could proceed. Sadie had some homework to do! When she came back, she was excited about becoming a life coach. We drilled down a bit further, and Sadie decided she wanted to coach recruiters to become better at what they do – she saw a lot o problems with this industry and was confident she could help improve it. Sadie found a coaching program she liked, signed up, and went through the certification process while keeping her job as a recruiter. We worked on her thoughts about her job so it was more enjoyable, and we also strategized about how to leverage her contacts for when she opened her coaching practice. I hope these three case studies have given you some ideas about all this self-information comes together in the career decision-making process. Giselle Rosman is the Business Administrator for Hipster Whale, the Director of the IGDA Melbourne Chapter, and the Executive Producer for the Global Game Jam. She was the Event Co-ordinator for Game Connect Asia Pacific from 2013 to 2014, and worked in the education sector at La Trobe University and the Academy of Interactive Entertainment. She has won MCV Pacific's Women of the Year award two years in a row (2014, 2015), is a strong advocate for the independent gaming scene in Melbourne, and is a regular speaker at events all around the world.
