Following the War of Wrath, many Elves from Beleriand come to dwell on the Isle of Eressëa. Ossë and Aüle build a land for men between the Hither Lands and Valinor: Númenor, Westernesse. The Dúnedain are a tall and strong people who live long lives and know not sickness. Their chief city is called Andúnië, and they are ruled for 400 years by Elros, son of Eärendil who chooses the fate of men. The Dúnedain become mighty in craft, especially sea-craft. The Valar forbid them from sailing so far westward that they can no longer see Númenor, and the Númenoreans obey. They travel often eastward to Middle-Earth and help the men there, who are now feeble and broken, to order their lives. Yet, they always return to the west. 01:07 Dan reads pages 259-263 from the Silmarillion, 2nd Edition 18:36 Summary 19:44 Discussion "And setting their course towards it the Edain came at last over leagues of sea and saw afar the land that was prepared for them, Andor, the Land of Gift, shimmering in a golden haze." For this penultimate episode of Season #1, Daniel welcomes Edain O'Donnell. Edain is an artist and creative director who has worked on the art department on several respected and high profile film and television projects. She has contributed to Irish classics such as The Wind That Shakes the Barley. She's recently worked on Holding, the television adaptation of the Graham Norton book of the same name. It was during her time working on that project that Edain pursued the idea of setting up a film studio, which she is now the co-founder of alongside a slew of talented Irish artists and filmmakers. The West Cork Film Studios is described as a new leading light in TV and Film Production in Ireland, and is simply emblematic of the tremendous talent this country has in the world of visual media. Today Edain will be chatting about her own creativity, the process of establishing the studio and will give an insight into not only what it offers others, but what it has given her on both a professional and personal level. All of this & more on Episode #11 of "Creatively Me".

Dnes bude Frodo svědčit před hraničářským soudem a obě strany přitom zažijí mnohá překvapení.

What was the purpose of Númenor? In this episode, we explore that question through the lens of the song of Númenor. Many of you know that I have argued that Númenor's purpose went beyond being a mere reward for the descendants of the Edain, and seemed to be filled with symbolism and rituals intended to point them to a greater destiny both in this world and beyond it. "Lovely is Númenor. But my heart resteth not here for ever; for here is ending, and there will be an end and the Fading, when all is counted, and all numbered at last, but yet it will not be enough, not enough. What will the Father, O Father, give me in that day beyond the end when my Sun faileth?"- JRR Tolkien, The Lost Road and Other WritingsWATCH THE VIDEO » https://youtu.be/w5utCO2kIu4 EXECUTIVE PRODUCERS:- Kaitlyn of Tea with Tolkien- John R- Jacob Lockham- John H- Scotchy Bobo- Eru27FOLLOW & SUPPORT US:- https://patreon.com/tolkienroad (get TWO MONTHS FREE for a limited time)- https://twitter.com/tolkienroad- https://truemythspress.com/ (take 10% OFF our merch with promo code LOST320) - https://facebook.com/tolkienroad- https://instagram.com/tolkienroadLINKS & MATHOMS:- take 10% OFF our merch at True Myths Press » https://truemythspress.com/discount/LOST320 (use promo code LOST320)- listen to The Silmarillion for FREE » https://www.audibletrial.com/everon- buy The Silmarillion » https://amzn.to/3FOKAY5- buy The Atlas of Middle-earth » https://amzn.to/3KLOxQa- buy Tolkien's Requiem » https://tolkiensrequiem.com/- buy Tolkien's Overture » https://tolkiensoverture.com/SPECIAL THANKS:- John R- Kaitlyn of Tea with Tolkien- Jacob Lockham- John H- Scotchy Bobo- Eru27- Ms. Anonymous- Andrew T- Redhawk- Shannon S- Brian O- Emilio P- Zeke F- James A- James L- Chris L- Chuck F- Asya V- Ish of the Hammer- Teresa C- David of Pints with Jack- Jonathan D- Eric B- Johanna T- Mike M- Robert H- Paul D- Julia- Werty- Matthew W- JoeBagelMan- Chris K- Jacob S- Richard K- Matt R- Garret P- John W- Eugene D- Chris B- Daniel SAS WELLAS THOSE CELEBRATING THEIR PATRON ANNIVERSARY IN DECEMBER OF 2022 - Zeke F- Shannon S- Emilio P- Brian O- Andrew T- Amy H

Why did Númenor exist? Was it simply to reward the Edain and their descendants? Or was there some greater purpose that impacted the rest of Arda, and perhaps even the Cosmos? In this episode, we are focusing on The Religion of Númenor, per a passage from Unfinished Tales' "A Description of Númenor". This is a very important topic for a number of reasons, but I want to highlight two specifically. First of all, Tolkien famously (and as it turns out controversially) called Lord of the Rings a “fundamentally religious and Catholic work”. What exactly he meant by this is a subject of much debate, and likely key to understanding what he meant to do with the work. Second of all, religion is a subject that has been of foundational importance in every human civilization in recorded history. Religion informs how we see ourselves and the meaning of our lives. Therefore, to know that Númenor had an actual religion is key to understanding what Númenor was all about. Indeed, there may be no more important topic for the producers of LOTR on Prime to think about and incorporate into the show if they want to make it truly worthy of Tolkien's name. Little by little, the notes and reflections of J. R. R. Tolkien have been published posthumously by his son, Christopher. Among the many volumes is the Tenth Volume in The History of Middle-Earth, entitled Morgoth's Ring. The book contains many of Tolkien's reflections on the nature of evil, mortality, and the eschatology of Middle-Earth. Among the gems is the publication of the conversation between Finrod (an Elf-Lord, the Eldar) and Andreth (a wise-woman from among the Edain--aka men). The Pugsters enjoy a free-range conversation that not only touches on the nature of evil in Middle-Earth, but also reaches our own--primary--world. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/the-theology-pugcast/support
This week’s subject is one of Tolkien’s most influential female characters. She did not have the innate wisdom and power of the elves, like Luthien and Galadriel. She did not have the strength of the youthful Edain, like Haleth. But Éowyn is hands down one of the most fierce and courageous characters in the Legendarium. Tune in as we discuss the life and legacy of the Lady Éowyn Shieldmaiden of Rohan!
As you’ve probably heard by now, the upcoming LOTR TV show will focus heavily on the story of Númenor and the Second Age of Middle-earth. Of the three Ages of Middle-earth, this is the one that we know the least about. For that reason, we thought it would be good to revisit the Second Age and really get our hands dirty in the details. Over the next several episodes, we’ll be embarking on a quest to make you as knowledgeable about Middle-earth’s Second Age as possible. Since we often reference the kingdoms of men (specifically those of the Edain), we thought it would be appropriate (and EXCITING) to do a 3-part-installment on the 3 Kingdoms of the Dúnedain; Númenor, Arnor and Gondor! Tune in for our first installment on the most prosperous kingdom of men to ever exist, Númenor!
The first of two episodes on the Akallabêth, the story of Númenor. At the outset of the Second Age, the Valar reward the Edain with wisdom, long life and their own private island in the Great Sea. The Númenóreans become legendary seafarers, sailing east to the edge of Arda and bringing knowledge back to Middle-earth. But the Valar forbid them to sail west in search of the Undying Lands, and soon the Númenóreans begin to yearn for the one thing they cannot have: immortality. We look into Tolkien's essays and letters to see what happens to mortals who do come to Aman, and dabble in genealogy with questionable results.
In Chapter 18 of The Silmarillion, Morgoth breaks the Siege of Angband with a sneak attack, beginning the Battle of Sudden Flame. As the fires die down, Fingolfin responds by challenging the Dark Lord to single combat. Meanwhile, displaced survivors of the Edain start down paths that will forever intertwine the fates of Men and Elves. Plus, Tolkien's best-known villain moves into the fortress next door with his annoying pets.
Men arrive in Beleriand in Chapter 17 of The Silmarillion, and Middle-earth will never be the same. The Elves' reaction to the newcomers varies, but Morgoth's goal is clear: to keep the two races from forming an alliance. We introduce the Three Houses of the Edain, discuss one of Tolkien's great mythological puns, and expose the terrible manners of string instruments.
