Clearly Define Your Mission - Mike Winger Welcome to Episode 9 of the Mission Driven Budget Podcast! Rate and review on Apple Podcasts or Spotify. Check out the Mission Driven Budget Blog. Connect with MikeInstagram: @mwinger87Email: mike@mosaicchristian.org Visit Mosaic Christian Church in Elkridge, Maryland!Links From This Episode:Stop It! - Bob NewhartNotes From This Episode:A clearly defined mission governs why AND how your church does ministry. If your mission doesn't influence how you're doing ministry, your mission is too vague. For example, Mosaic filters the songs they sing so people who don't go to church can connect with the lyrics and not get lost in a barrage of Christian lingo.Avoid picking up people's passion projects by turning the ownership back to them. It's not your church organization's responsibility to subsidize every potential ministry - it's the responsibility of the people IN your church to pursue that passion. Maybe have that person research a few organizations that your church can partner with (not build a whole new ministry). Or, have that person start a mid-week group that supports the demographic they are passionate about. Church leadership is called to equip people to do the work of ministry. Equip them and send them out.Consistency turns into laziness when you refuse to change something that isn't working anymore. You can refresh things that are working so they can work even better without sacrificing consistency.Lead with questions. Some conversations with staff can be tough, but don't start with "Stop It!" Start by asking questions to understand not only what they're thinking, but why they're thinking it. What are their values? What are their beliefs? WHY do they believe that way? Deal with the root of the issue and save yourself and your staff a lot of frustration."People often overestimate their productivity in one day. They also underestimate their productivity in one year." Consistency requires long-term sacrifice for long-term gain. We say "No," to good things so we can say, "Yes," to the things that accomplish our goals. Don't pack as much as you can do into one day. Pace yourself over long periods of time and you'll find you can accomplish much more than a few fast-paced weeks that leave you burned out.

Katrina Coleman is back on the Healthcare Experience Matters Podcast this week. Much like when she joined us back in November for her encouraging interview with us about gratitude, today's episode is another memorable show. This time we cover emotional exhaustion and its impact on healthcare workers throughout the world. Katrina will leave listeners with some reasons for optimism as this interview has many important nuggets about reversing emotional exhaustion. “Practice self-compassion and be gracious with yourself,” she said. “Emotional exhaustion can be reversed and you can thrive again, but it won't be reversed without action on your part.” Katrina is a Leadership and Engagement Strategist with Maryland Healthcare Education Institute (MHEI) in Elkridge, Md. She has been with MHEI for more than a decade. “My ‘why' is about building the capacity for courage, confidence, and competence,” she said. Every day at 10:00 in the morning, the Maryland Department of Healthpublishes the latest data about COVID-19 in our state. Between Tuesday and Wednesday, the state recorded more than 11,000 new cases of the virus. Between yesterday and today, we added 10,587 cases to that frightful total, which does not include results of self-tests that anyone may have administered. The 7-day average positivity rate in the state stands at 25.45%, slightly lower than yesterday, but by comparison, in the first week of November 2021, before the omicron variant raised its nasty head, the rate in MD was 2.92%. Of all the ways of calculating the severity of the pandemic, most public health officials point to the number of hospitalizations as the metric that sheds light, not just on the number of people who are seriously ill, but also the strain those patients put on the medical infrastructure. As of this morning, MD Hospitals are caring for 3,428 patients with COVID 19. Many have other conditions as well. That's far and away the most patients hospitalized at one time since the pandemic began, and hospitals need our help.Tom guest is Bob Atlas, the president and CEO of the Maryland Hospital Association, which represents all of Maryland's hospitals and health systems. Bob Atlas joins us on Zoom from Elkridge, Maryland. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Today, we welcome back to Midday a wonderful friend of the show, Dr. Miho Tanaka. She's an orthopedic surgeon and sports medicine expert who will answer your questions about training and exercise. We call our segments with Dr. Tanaka, What Hurts Today? If you've got something that hurts, feel free to give us a call… But first, the Baltimore Running Festival is back. On Saturday (October 9), runners will hit the streets in four different events: the 26-mile full marathon, a half marathon, a 10K race (that's about 6 miles) and a 5K race (that's about 3 miles). It's the 20th anniversary of this popular event, which like so many events, took a COVID-related hiatus last year. Tom's first guest today is Lee Corrigan, the Festival's executive race director and president of Corrigan Sports Enterprises, the Elkridge-based company that organizes this and many other footraces across the region. After Mr. Corrigan's marathon preview, it's time for a Midday segment that, like the Baltimore Running Festival, has been absent during the pandemic. It's a segment we call, with our tongues firmly ensconced in our cheeks, What Hurts Today? We pose this question because, let's face it. Something hurts. Your knee. Your shoulder. Your elbow. Your ankle. I ask with all due respect, with genuine concern, and with a shared sense of what it means to have things that hurt. I have things that hurt, and so do you. And what's more fun than comparing what hurts? Dr. Miho Tanakaspecializes in what hurts. She is an acclaimed orthopedic surgeon and the director of the Women's Sports Medicine Program at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston. She is a member of the faculty at the Harvard Medical School. Dr. Tanaka has treated professional athletes and weekend-warriors alike. Whether or not you are running in one of the races in the Baltimore Running Festival this weekend, or your idea of a good time is hopping on your bike and riding, or leashing up your dog and walking, or playing soccer or tennis or golf or lifting weights; whatever you like to do to keep active and fit, Dr. Tanaka is here to answer questions you may have about how to stay active and injury-free, and to suggest some things to think about if you have an injury you need to address. Dr. Miho Tanaka joins us on our digital line from Boston. We welcome your questions and comments. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
