To celebrate the launch of Perpetuum Mobile, and the return of Milan Design Week, host Oli Stratford speaks to Benedetta Tagliabue, the director and head architect of the international firm Benedetta Tagliabue - EMBT Architects. Showing as part of the INTERNI Design Re-Generation exhibition event at the Università degli Studi of Milan, Perpetuum Mobile – The Dancing Furniture of Enric Miralles & Benedetta Tagliabue's home, brings together recreations of nine of the furniture pieces and objects that the architect designed alongside his partner Benedetta Tagliabue for their home in Barcelona, Spain. The exhibition includes tables, seating and shelving designed between 1992 and 1999, and reproduced in sustainable American hardwoods, but never put into commercial production. Although each piece is unique, they all demonstrate Miralles' vision of the ‘house in motion' – a domestic space in which each piece of furniture does not have a defined place or a set purpose, but can be moved or modified to meet the needs of the moment.Perpetuum Mobile – The Dancing Furniture of Enric Miralles & Benedetta Tagliabue's home.Designed by Benedetta Tagliabue – EMBT Architects, in collaboration with Fundació Enric Miralles.Supported by the American Hardwood Export Council (AHEC). Benedetta Tagliabue, currently director of Miralles Tagliabue EMBT, international architecture firm founded in Barcelona in 1994, with office in Shanghai and in Paris, has received prestigious awards for her works as the RIBA Stirling Prize in 2005, the National Spanish Prize in 2006, City of Barcelona prize in 2005 and 2009, and the RIBA Jencks Award in 2013 as acknowledgment of her major contribution internationally to both the theory and practice of architecture. Extremely active in the academia, she has been a visiting professor at Harvard University, Columbia University and Barcelona ETSAB, lecturing regularly at architecture forums and universities, and part of jurors around the world, the Princesa de Asturias awards and since 2014 member of the jury of the Pritzker Prize. Her professional beginning, the close collaboration with the husband and working partner, Enric Miralles, a kind of legendary figure, a man endowed with a particular charismatic and strong personality, will be the starting point of our conversation. A journey together that will represent a reciprocal growth, giving opportunity for many famous realizations, and will bring Benedetta, Italian, born in Milan, to deeply understand and love Spain. In EMBT works is recurrent the research of sophisticated combinations and unusual applications of materials, with the frequent collaboration of talented artists, as Toni Cumella, coming from a long ceramist family tradition, for the Parc Dels Colors, 2002, Diagonal Mar Park, 2003, and Santa Caterina Market in 2005, until one of the most recent projects, Plateau Central Masterplan and Housing, at the periphery of Parisian suburbs, presented for this 17th Venice Architecture Biennale, that sees the contribution of the famous street artist JR. “Living within a market - Outside space is also Home”, title of the installation, intends to emphasise the value embodied by an abandoned area transformed into a colorful plaza, similar to Santa Caterina Market in Barcelona, that will encourage the community's participation and integration between the residents. There is a frequent expression of Benedetta 'little by little' that characterises some of her attempts, born as aspirations without any certainty of success but gradually developed into important projects, as for example the adventure in China, crowned by several gratifying, important projects, as the recent Conservatory of Music in Shenzhen, first prize winner in an international competition.Kálida Sant Pau, part of an international network of hospitals created by the Scottish Maggie's Foundation, finished almost a year ago, represents another moment of our talk, having been for Benedetta an occasion to reimagine healthcare and hospital facilities, providing patients with spaces full of light, in between greenery and nature, able to transmit a warm, serene atmosphere. And above this intervention, she will speak of another laudable and important initiative conceived in 2011, the creation of the Enric Miralles Foundation, whose goal is to promote experimental architecture.

This episode features a piece by Peter Buchanan which asks whether early acclaim for an architect can be a handicap – or even the kiss of death? We're revisiting this piece now as our July/August issue features the work of Enric Miralles (1955 - 2000) in our Reputations column, who, as a believer in designing through making, left a vast archive of drawings and models. This essay looks at the architects once heralded as rising stars who have seen their work descend into caricature and recycled motifs. The original piece can be read here: https://www.architectural-review.com/architects/emerging-architects/can-early-acclaim-for-an-architect-be-a-handicap-even-the-kiss-of-death

Carme Pinós is a major influence on global architecture through her sharp and poetic designs and humanistic design philosophy, leading urgent conversations about public architecture, social housing and urban refurbishment. She joined journalist and author Virginia Trioli in conversation with Naomi Milgrom AO, founder of the Naomi Milgrom Foundation, the organisation that commissions the architect of each MPavilion. The trio talks all things urban design, leadership and the creative journey of 2018's stunning MPavilion. Based in Barcelona, Pinós established Estudio Carme Pinós in 1991 following early international recognition for her work with the late Enric Miralles. Distinctive projects such as the CaixaForum Cultural and Exhibition Centre in Zaragoza (Spain), the Cube Office Towers I and II in Guadalajara (Mexico) and the Department Building of the Vienna University of Economics and Business (Austria) have foregrounded Carme’s interests in human connection, folded materials and experiential design.

In this episode Andrew Clancy is joined by Ricardo Flores and Eva Prats of Flores Prats Architects. (NOTE: During the conversation we have an extended conversation about their Casa Balaguer project - being able to refer to the drawings and images might be useful to understand this part! http://www.floresprats.com/archive/palau_balaguer/) Flores Prats work with a lyrical precision, working into and out of the contexts where it is sited. Sites are read formally and culturally with memory and the incidental valued as a site for discovery. The roots of the practice lie in the time that Eva and Ricardo spent working with the late Enric Miralles and the investigations of this time continue to be a source of agitation and delight. Disarmingly modest when they speak they do so directly and with no artifice. In their built works disparate elements are held in an equilibrium in which everything impinges on everything else in a choreography at once gestural and deeply felt. Familiar elements are woven into new guises at once new and apposite. In this reworking their essentials become more vitally manifest. In this interview they talk through how they met in the offices of Enric Miralles, and how they see their work relative to his. The culture of drawing is discussed in depth, not least how they use hand drawings as a living working method in their studio, as a way to see the contexts where they work. http://www.floresprats.com Credits: Register is brought to you by the Department of Architecture & Landscape at Kingston University. fada.kingston.ac.uk/al/ Head of Department: Eleanor Suess Register Editor: Timothy Smith Interviewer: Andrew Clancy Audio: Justin Howard
