In this Parenting is a Joke snack episode, comedian Ester Steinberg returns for more unfiltered takes on parenting, beauty standards, and raising kids in Las Vegas. She talks about her struggle with her son's obsession with toy weapons, the debate over giving kids Nerf guns, and the pressure of raising self-sufficient boys. Ester also shares her blunt parenting philosophy—teaching her kids that life is not fair—and why she forces them to try stand-up comedy as a form of reverse psychology. The conversation takes a deep dive into plastic surgery culture, self-image struggles, and how moms teach their kids confidence while battling their own insecurities. Plus, they discuss the logistics of being married to a fellow comedian, the drama of coordinating childcare, and why Ester might be done taking gigs at the same time as her husband. ✨ Subscribe, rate, and review! In this episode of Parenting is a Joke, comedian and mom Ester Steinberg joins the show to talk about parenting two young kids, living in Las Vegas, and the unexpected twists of motherhood. She hilariously recounts discovering she was pregnant on her honeymoon, doing stand-up while miscarrying in Dallas, and accidentally taking mushrooms—twice—while unknowingly pregnant. The conversation dives into postpartum struggles, C-section recoveries, and the absurdity of kids' birthday parties (spoiler: she's anti-goodie bags). Ester also shares what it's like raising a family in Vegas, far from the chaos of the Strip, and how the affordability drew her there. They swap stories about parenting fails, the reality of going back to work after having a baby, and why no one seems to care that moms are recovering from childbirth. Plus, Ester reveals the unexpected reason she once drank breast milk on a plane and why her wedding diet was immediately undone in Italy. It's a wild, relatable, and laugh-out-loud look at modern motherhood, comedy, and survival. ✨ Subscribe, rate, and review! This week, comedians (and married couple!) Noah Gardenswartz and Ester Steinberg join Megan, Chris, and Kurt. They love their kids, BUT…how is it possible to be the gentle, warm, and caring parents we all aspire to be while we're in a raging fight with our spouse? After Megan's husband forgets his passport on a recent family trip, she finds herself torn between wanting to launch him into the sun, but also needing him to give her a break from single-parenting. Conflict with your partner is going to happen, but the last thing Megan, or any parent, wants to do is bring that anger and resentment to a toddler's bathtime. When Noah decides it's waffles for dinner, Ester can't help but light the bickering fuse. But as unhealthy of a dinner as waffles may be, showing their two kids that adults arguing and then (after hours of uncomfortable silence) resolving a conflict, is in fact a very healthy emotional skill to develop. Hopefully that's how our kids remember it years later in therapy! And remember, you can call our hotline and leave us questions, comments, or your own funny, totally anonymous “Circle Time” parenting story at 424-570-KIDS or you can email us at Ilovemykid@wondery.com. Ester Steinberg has been in the comedy circuit since she was 16 years-old trying to make her way on stage at the one comedy club in Tampa, Fl. The message she received? No girls allowed. She then made her way to Los Angeles before settling with her comedian husband and their son in New York. Ester brings some levity and comedic anecdotes to what it's like for a woman and a new mother in the world of stand up comedy. She's reflecting on how she's approached her career during parenthood and the pandemic, as well as both the sexism she's endured as a female comedian, and the humor she's found in the mess of motherhood.
